+Arlind Shimcani 31kw is about 40 horsepower so it's about as fast as an 80 horsepower car weighing 1 ton - e.g. a 1.4 litre petrol Peugeot 206 Okay it will have less top speed but just as good acceleration at lower speeds.
Definitely one of your best episodes, I bought my first car 5 months ago and the blackness is restored, human slime removed, headlights are shining again, and this will be my next project. Thank you mighty car mods!
@CaptainKermit Correct! but we didn't have the plug. The extension lead is rated at 10amps at 240 volts, total wire thickness is probably equivalent to 8-12guage wire you'd use for a normal amp install.
One suggestion about using a CD-drive: You could just use the rear audio panel which is on pretty much every CD-drive I've seen, it's just three pins with GND, left and right signal, so no problem to figure that out. Will look a bit cleaner (and allows you to say "go plug your headphones into the CD drive and leave me alone" when your passenger is annoying for some reason).
I've been running a PC CD-ROM drive to play CDs in my shop for a few years now :D - BTW you don't need the 5v input, the drive will run fine on 12V alone (yellow + black).
Sorry guys you weren't the first, this is how my cd player worked when I was 12, 14 years ago as I couldn't afford a hifi. I got an external scsi drive from a swap meet for a couple of dollars and an old 4x creative cd-rom which output to an amp that came off a verge. No doubt I wasn't the first either. Later I upgraded to a 3 cd stacker with a remote, good times.
They didnt even need the cd player.. You can just plug your phone/ipod whatever right into the RCA inputs on the amp with a RCA to headphone/aux cord and play music like that
y'know, there's another 4-pin connector on the back of the CD drive designed specifically to re-route audio. You don't need to use the front headphone jack.
Yimmy Chacin Varies between model to model. For most, I figure 2A would be plenty. Also note that some drives require both a 12v and 5v power source, while others might only use 5v.
The stereo in one of my cars is just a logitech x230 I found laying around with a bypassed power supply and a 12v plug on the end. It works and sounds ok haha.
Loving how they've gone back to their roots on this one for trying to show very cheap basic mods that are easy. Yes it looks pretty dodgy, but wouldn't be too hard to make it look factory. Good on ya guys
Also, instead of speaker wire, you can use network cable. It's good because of the low resistance. Works just as good as monster cable and works for subs too.
I`ve actually did this once a few years ago. Only the cd-rom part. A friend of mine had a cd-player that didn`t read any cd`s,but had an auxiliary input. He got an old cd-rom wich had play/pause/next/previous buttons,we hooked it all up and it worked like a charm for a few months until he got another cd-player.
To answer the questions i found in the comments: 1:No the 14V wont kill the drive (but it wouldnt last long). 2:Volume? MOST of these old drives had a volume slider. 3:Yes they dont have shock protection-Tracks will skip. 4:"Newer drives have SATA conections-how do i this?"-doesent matter because they dont have a headphone plug since more than 10 years....
Those linear regulators will not regulate without capactors between VIN and VOUT, you may well have lucked out and the CD rom may well have a cap between 5v and ground which the regulator is using, but you are missing the one for the voltage input and the capacitors are supposed to be as close to the regulator as possible. Those CD ROM drives also require a clean 12v, they dont like electrical noise or anything higher which can damage them. A cars electrical system is a very noisy 14v.
5:30 you could've covered the two smaller holes with a piece of wood, that would've been easier and the box would be bigger, resulting in a lower resonance frequency.
i have done that last time.. instead of just one 7805 for regulated 5v, I use both 7805 and 7812 to regulate the 12v too, cause car 12v runs higher when the engine is started
In the Philippines jeepney drivers used to sport these kind of sound system. Nowadays, with the price of head units and the iPod era, these kind of installations are becoming rare.
i think most if not all cd rom drives have an analog output in the back. its either 2 or 4 pins on the back but its used to pass thru to the sound card so it doesnt take any cpu power to play audio cds.
I've been a long time viewer, love the show, and love the laughs! Keep up the awesome work! I'm getting a MCM sticker for my AWD Eclipse Turbo. ;) Greetings from the US and Portugal!
You'll probably need a higher wattage head unit to push any kickers. The one they used is from like 1990. You can easily find a $20 head unit on ebay that will push out enough power for those 12's
yeah it was pretty nice to find. I found an 8 inch sub out of one of those "bass cannon" things that were sold in the 90's for people's cars for 2 bucks. I find more receivers than subwoofers though. I've bought 3 receivers from the thrift store now and i think i've spent about 15 bucks. one needed the cord repaired though
it is done even cheaper if you forgo the cd rom drive and pick up an old portable cd player from a salvage yard. you can get ones meant for car use for 2 bucks at a salvage yard, provided someone else didnt already grab it
Actually, putting the speakers up on the dash is a genius idea. It gives a more realistic sound stage and the 15 inch woofer properly sealed can give a great sound at low-volumes
Marty , You could wire the CD-ROM audio out using the anolog output that is located at the back to make your build much nicer Just a tip from your fellow viewer Dealio
came for the mods, stayed for moogs dancing

+Tim Lewis what kind of 206 were you driving was it missing on a cylinder?
Oh god that shit got me laughing. ".. it'll see you launch yourself rom 0 to 100 mph in 45 seconds."
Even funnier is that they're talking about km/h; so what they basically saying is its 0 to 60 in 45 seconds.
INEEDNAWZZZ INEEDNAWZZZ
62mp/h = 100km/h
1 kmh = 0.62 mph
I really like Australia for that, it's like a hybrid country between UK/USA and Europe.
Not really, you either use imperial or metric. They use metric not any hybrid

Peter Schmidt hi i have a question ? how many amper need to make work the cd drive whit a voltaje regulator of 12v
Yimmy Chacin Varies between model to model. For most, I figure 2A would be plenty. Also note that some drives require both a 12v and 5v power source, while others might only use 5v.
Peter Schmidt ok thanks but i think is because the amp need 1.3A and the voltage regulator has 1A
Yimmy Chacin There are 1.5A and 3A regulators out there, and they're pretty cheap. I don't know of any model names off the top of my head.
Peter Schmidt thanks man, i thinks is because the cd driver need 1.3 and i have only 1 AMP, i try to find a new one,

A switching voltage regulator is about $0.90 and lets you step down/step up the voltage without generating heat and needing a heatsink.
