Making a Self Driving 2016-2022 Toyota Prius (w/Comma OpenPilot)…and test drive

- I install Comma 2 openpilot on my Toyota Prius, which is supported at Bronze level. Comma is similar to Tesla Autopilot, and supports over 150 vehicles at this time, and it works quite well on highway drives. I was able to go 200 miles with minimal intervention. Made for a stress free drive!

I've always thought I was the only Prius in TX running Comma AI! So cool! 😁
Awesome!! I know of a mod in the comma discord that is also running one in a Prius Prime
great video!!! helped out a lot!
Didn't know this existed, pretty cool
striaght to the point w/o missing details along the way!.
- once you plug in the comma, do you have to connect it with a sim card?
- I noticed this vid is two years old, how are things now?
- how do you update the comma?
@@IvanRosaT thanks! No SIM card unless you want to upgrade to comma connect. I still use it on every trip greater than 20 minutes, still as fine as day 1. I haven’t updated it, if branch is reliable there’s no big need to especially since I don’t have the SDSU or pedal add ons to allow comma to control full stop and go.
How do you get around the power drain from the comma 3x always drawing power?
@@BummMuncher oddly mine isn’t draining power, but I have a comma 2 not 3x
You did a good job, may need some help when I get mine..lol😊
thanks! sure feel free to reach out with qs
Hi there, you still using this? Any reviews/ tips you can give appreciated 😅
Yes, I have been using it on most highway trips. Still runs just fine! I prefer highway use more than city use.
How does the device affect the view through the windscreen? The device is quite large.
Stick an iphone around the same area, gives an idea. I've gotten used to it, but taller people may notice it affects the view
I'm finding it really difficult to get the harness to fit inside the windshield cover (I've got a 2018 Prime). Any tips for getting everything to fit?
Hey have you had any issues with the funcionality on the prime? ive got a 19 considering the buy
Does Toyota Prius need to have safety assist? for compatibility with Comma OpenPilot?
As long as it has the two white buttons on the right side of the steering wheel (lane keep, radard cruise), it is compatible. I know 2017+ have them in all models (trim 1-4), but only specific 2016 models come with it (e.g. trim 3 touring, 4 touring).
Here's a way to tell by looking at the steering wheel:

Did you try disconnect DSU see if it worked any better?
Haven't tried yet
Have you tried running Shane’s fork yet?
Sorry for all the questions you seem to have the closest car with the most recent software I have a 2017 Prius prime I’m afraid to switch from stock not exactly sure how to install the fork
@@Maginnes2010 Not yet, but I've planned to give it a try given the "no disengage on gas" feature
@@EdwardInTXdid you try? Also how stable is the lane keep with comma 3? Can it take turns smoothly?
@@MrQuay03 I haven't disconnected DSU but plan to buy SDSU so comma can control the speed. I don't have a comma 3, but it would be the same as comma 2 without the ZSS steering sensor upgrade
Where you are the Millionares unveiled podcast?
Yup
Can you comment the use in Europa, specifically Germany? Is it allowed?
I’m not sure about regulations out there…as long as there’s nothing about obstruction of view from phone on windshield, I’d imagine it’s fine
What are the objects you used?
1. Comma openpilot device
2. Black panda (box to USB C/Ethernet/Harness)
3. USB C cable
4. Ethernet cable
5. Comma power (OBD)
6. Harness to plug into car camera
Do you know if this will void your car’s warranty? I want this so bad and would buy it in a second if it doesn’t.
Nope. Modifications aren't permanent either--you can easily unplug and remove it. I've moved it from car to car with no issues.
@@EdwardInTX the car you installed on was bronze. Did it have any issues driving ? Corners etc?
@@alexanderadams3437 I'll post a driving video soon. I've used it mainly on highways, and worked very well for that. I haven't taken any insane curves yet, but plan to try. I believe this car is Bronze because openpilot doesn't control gas and brake--it relies on the car's adaptive cruise function.
Would this work on a prius prime?
yes, there are people using it on youtube with prius prime
how much did you pay for the device?
$700 used on ebay, but there are also clones like Mr.One sells on Aliexpress, that can make it as low as $299.
