Hi, I'm Mark and I've been teaching and playing guitar professionally for 26 years now, and I've picked up a lot of insights along the way; things I wish I had known when I started out. That's why I started this channel - to share this knowledge with you.
But this is more than just a place to learn guitar. It's also place where you can hang out, relax, be yourself, get support, make friends and get inspired to have more fun with your guitar.
So go ahead. Pick up your axe. Hit play. And be a better guitarist.

Hi mark. I'm a self taught guitarist... mainly using youtube. I have learnt how to play songs but never learnt about technique. I am now trying to improve my timing and strumming before learning anymore songs...
Your videos are the best tutorials I have found. After each video I am noticing improvements straight away! Thanks so much from the UK!
Hey Mark, this is really great. I am 70 years old & live in South Africa.Used to play drums, (not too good but passable for gigs in a band which once won the Rhodesian Rock Band Competition) completely self taught and no idea of what music notation is about. When I turned 50 I picked up a harmonica and could play almost any song as long as I knew the song, also just be ear, also not very good but definitely good enough to be recognisable and accompany other musicians. I found that if I am tired when driving long distance which I often do in my line of work, playing the harmonica tends to wake me up and I think it has to do with the extra breathing it forces me to do.! My son who lives in Bowral with his family gave me as a 70th birthday gift, a two month holiday in Aus, absolutely fantastic and we are now making plans to move across ourselves. While we were over there I was also given an Arth Guiness guitar and again found that I could sort of play it. Started with The Old Ohio which was not too bad, by my standards. Now the bad part, it got irreparably broken by some inconsiderate baggage attendant on the leg between Johannesburg and Durban in South Africa and the airline, South African Airways are not accepting any responsibility. Guess which airline I will not use again? Anyway, I have borrowed a guitar from a friend and intend replacing the broken one as soon as funds are available which brings me to the salient point. The two lessons I have already listened to, picking and now this one, tick tock are fantastic and have already made one helluva difference. As I intimated, funds are a bit of a challenge to me at the moment and I am a bit confused as to how this course works so you going to have to put it in, hell I hate to say it, old man terms. I still act and feel like a spring chicken by the way and often get confused for a 55 year old. I believe I still have about thirty years working life left..! ! Will these lessons of yours continue coming as this one has, is there a way I can download the videos and how much is this lot going to cost me. Really looking forward to your reply. Sincere regards Tom Crawford. PS I'm never really going to be good but I get so much enjoyment out of it that I will definitely do it.
Life get's in the way of the stuff we really want to do sometimes haha. Nice to know people are not just 'watching' the vids. I love to hear that people have a Guitar in hand whilst watching.
I cannot tell you how much this video has liberated me. I was aware that strumming was all about timing and was trying to strum to a metronome but struggling. Focusing on essentially using my arm as a swinging metronome has made so much difference, I still use my metronome but now I can play in time! I can jam and feel myself keeping time without even thinking about it!
This is incredible. I've been playing guitar for 4 years and never been able to figure out why my timing is so bad. I tried this technique and it instantly fixed my timing issues. Thanks so much Mark!
Been playing 3 years at age 56 after raising my 4 children. I have been so frustrated with the pick but after your videos I’m going to give it a go. I haven’t to much $ for lessons yet but did find a good teacher for at least once a month, so I will subscribe to your channel. I am playing because I want to be able to sing. I posted two videos on RUclips but really need more guitar guidance to facilitate my goal to accompany myself through open mics. Thank you. Your clear, you don’t ramble, lessons are to the point .
This is for ALL chords when strumming... Just make the up stroke a 'flick' of a few strings. You don't have to hit all the strings on the way up.
mark, I'm 61, retired and got a guitar for Christmas. i have been watching videos on you tube for a month and have found yours very helpful. I'm determined to learn to play and thank you for your outstanding tips. eg holding the pick, tick tock, 5 mistakes etc. I was frustrated but now understand so basic flaws that I was developing just by watching your videos.
Hi Mark. Ive been learning to play guitar for just over a year now and have really struggled to get my head around strumming patterns. Your tick tock method has been a Eureka moment for me this morning! I'll definitely be watching all your videos. Thanks
Michael.... so wonderfully put. I have to say I really appreciate you saying so my guitar friend. Now you've improved your strum, you can take that same attitude into every aspect of the guitar...love it!!
I have only been playing for five weeks and your lessons are brilliant and by far the best on youtube! Please don't stop posting them. Thank you
Thanks for verifying what I was thinking: This technique effectively gives you a metronome to play with. Very nice presentation. Tick tock.
Right on Mark!
You are amazing to watch and listen to. The best thing as far for me and me being a beginner is you show a method and you explain "why" it's done this way and "why" it works.
Also showing "why" things don't work.
Keep up the videos and food work!
I've been playing for so many years but never considered this method... you're totally right, it helps so much for a perfect timing. I always struggeled with good timed ryhtms and I think this method is the key to the right path... I will definately integrate this in my daily practise! thanks so much
Good Mark, you get right to the point, no excess chatter, thank you for that. My strumming is improving already. Thanks and now subscribed.
Thank you! A mate tried to explain this to me earlier without describing as "tick tock" method and I never understood what he meant. Now I get it. Awesome explanation and now onto your other vids. Cheers.
Thank you thank you for focusing so much on strumming. I have watched so many teachers, friends, and videos that focus almost exclusively on the chords, with only quick blurbs about strumming, which I find to be the most difficult part of learning this instrument. I've only made it through a few videos and I already feel more inspired to play than I have in a long time. Can't wait for more ... keep it coming!
I'm an old salt trying to learn the guitar. Took a few lesson, always struggle with the strum. You have an ease with your instruction. Going to work your method. Thanks mate! You are attentive to your comments. Good job.
Hi Mark! Thanks for your reply. I am doing great with the guitars, only two weeks into utilizing your instruction and teaching myself (guitar and piano), and my local guitar shop in Arizona was blown away!!! The owner jammed out with me a few days ago, haha it was my first jam session! And he was amazed, said I was a natural and that doesn't happen often!!! I told him about my RUclips teacher and also have been sharing your site with friends & family.
For a beginner like me your lessons are like pure gold, I can feel my improvements day by day and it is fun but mostly I feel more confident and exited to go further! Thanks a lot mate!
Hey Matt I would just like to thank you for being such an awesome teacher to us all. I'm a trained producer and I've always wanted to improve my guitar skills and you by far are amongst the best teachers out there. You lessons are well structured, you explain things clearly and your delivery is just pinpoint accurate. I wish you all the best my friend.
As brand new player I found this lesson very helpful. I tried this method last night and already helped me to strum better. I look forward to future lesson keep up the good work.
Helped me a lot! Thanks so much!
Thank you Mark for all of your Video`s.You inspired me every time learn more and better.
Thanks for the info on strumming , will practice this, and will perfect it . You explain the sections very well, and through on playing guitar sections. Well done, listening very close to what you are saying. Thanks
All I have to say is that I really appreciate your lessons. I knew there was something wrong with my strumming and I was never able to play songs exactly how they sound. I am a self taught guitar player and have been playing for a few years now. This video instantly allowed me to play almost every song that I tried with this method. All of your videos are great!! Thanks for this!!
Mark I was having problem with my struming everything I try I just couldn't get it right after watching your video has helped me a lot thank you so much and keep up the great work I have been playing for just over 3 months now
Amazing, simple, well explained and easy to understand. We just found a diamond.
Until this very day I was messing around strumming. you just made my life easy dude. Thanks mark, appreciate your work.
Dear Mark,
Thanks for this guitar lesson..
I practice the tic toc timing every day and it worked!!
My timing is Inproved very much..
Thank You very very Much!
Am sure the way you explained this it will make a huge difference for me since strumming is a stumbling block of mine. I am already using your "pressing " method of remembering and changing chords, which has been a huge help to me..Thanks for your videos, keep em coming and I should keep advancing with proper practice.
great lesson man ive only jst started and have been watching all ur videos, because ur videos nobody beleives ive only been playing three months keep them coming , thanks again
Thank you Mark for a good technique. I'm using the tic toc method for about two hrs and I'm improving.
Thanks for this. Can't wait to try it. Have been taking lessons for two years and now want to really refine my timing and control. This should help!
You are an absolutely amazing guitar instructor! I have been wanting to learn how to pay the guitar ever since my uncle bought me one. I tried it out a little bit, but never got too far. It's been sitting around collecting dust until I came across your video on how to change guitar strings! You awoke my desire to learn again, and what an amazing teacher you are!!! Thank you soooooo much! God Bless you :)
You have been such a inspiration for me my uncle just gave me a electric guitar and I've watched many if your videos and I always will I'm 14 male looking to be a professional singer thnx for showing me all of your techniques thank you your the best mentor
I LOVE HOW YOU SHARE THE KNOWLEDGE. THANKS A LOT
Simple and easy..Loved it!
Thank you.
Hi Mark...
I'm Richard from Ashford Kent UK, I'm 60 and begun to play again, I find it hard sometimes to follow other tutor's, I think you explain things really good and slowly when required, also really enjoy Darius too...
I practice everyday and beginning to see a good change in chords from muscle memory...
Anyway just thought I'd say thanks, and keep it going...
I'm glad to hear your getting so much from the lessons:) keep updating you're progress mate & I'll keep an eye out for you!
Thank you so much for this! I've never had direction with strumming in any lesson I've taken other than using a metronome. This helps so much💗
thank you for this! super helpful.
awesome video and you teach very clearly and easy to understand I play a lot of Southern Gospel and bluegrass on the guitar so I do a lot of flatpicking but one thing that I do have trouble with is different kinds of fancy rhythms and I believe your videos will help me out a bunch there
Thank you so much for your lessons!! I struggled with my rhythm and strumming until I seen your videos, you explain it perfectly!!
great video...really helpful...
thank you so much its easy to understand most especially like me a beginner...thanks for your effort
Great Lessons, should be very very usefull for everyone! One of the best lessons on struming
I've been playing for 26yrs. People generally think I'm good, but I knew I was blagging it. I knew strumming was important, but I've always just used my ear and sense of rhythm. Often getting it wrong. After seeing this I'm going to strip back to basics and start again. I remember timing when I first learned, but thought it boring and skipped it as I just wanted to play.
Great videos. I've now subscribed and will be an avid student.
thank you very helpful..
Thank you for sharing
Best session on this seemingly insignificant aspect of learning to play the guitar!
Awesome video Mark... I got a lotta strumming issues as a beginner.. this is very helpful .Keep it up!
Hi Mark, Just like to say thanks for the information they sure are going to help me big time your videos are great thanks again!! Your a great teacher!!
Best instruction on RUclips. Thank you!!!
Great lesson 👍. Thanks for your time and knowledge. Keep it up! 🙂
Thank you, Mark. Was a great example of how to "Tick-Tock", made a lot of sense.
Very helpful, thanks alot Mark..
Another great lesson. I am hooked. Thank you.
Wicked!!! So glad ur rocking it
Great to know that pendulum movements. Will keep that in mind. Thanks!
The most overlooked part of guitar playing. Thanks so much.
Thank you for this. As a rhythm impaired person, this has been my "El Guapo" with guitar playing. No one has ever put it like this for me. Big help.
This is a REALLY helpful tip. Now I understand why my rhythm sucks when I try to individually time each up and down stroke in a strumming pattern.
Thanks Mark. I'm teaching myself to play acoustic guitar and this has really helped improve my timing and rhythm ☺
Hey Mark
You're a good teacher. I love how you break things down to the simplest level and then build from there. In this video I was thinking "I wonder how this might apply to my lead playing". And then you kinda briefly showed that at the end.
I'm 65 and barely beginning to learn. I'm going to try this approach and I'll let you know how it goes. :-)
Nga mihi.
Thanks so much! This video was really clear and it's really helped me :). Keep sharing! :)
Thanks for the awesome tips! Your a great teacher, and your accent is mesmerizing!
thank you so much for the video Mark such a tremendous help for a beginner like me...:-)
Great lesson, thanks Mark!
Great lesson
Funny thing is, a while ago, someone was mentioning this but I never really applied it and now I will make sure to do so
Thanks again
You are a great teacher :)
Fair enough question by the way. You're correct in that their are many ways to play a chord shape. I believe in starting with one way to play a chord as a beginner. Later on their are advantages to playing chords a different way (different finger arrangements etc). But no hard rules is the best way. In answer to the strings to strum, look for chord diagrams that show a (0) or (x) above the strings, at the nut of the diagram.
Great tutorials thanks!
Great advice Joe
awesome channel, exactly what i was looking for!
Really appreciate what you are doing.
I've been playing guitar for about a year now, so i guess i can be considered a beginner, your videos are so very helpful to me, thanks mate, i hope to one day be as good as you are.

I have played off and on for a few years and the "tick tock method" cured my strumming problem. Thank you. Secondly, I do have trouble with singing while playing complex rhythms so I am sure this will help and a video on that too might help me.
