Hi mark. I'm a self taught guitarist... mainly using youtube. I have learnt how to play songs but never learnt about technique. I am now trying to improve my timing and strumming before learning anymore songs...
Your videos are the best tutorials I have found. After each video I am noticing improvements straight away! Thanks so much from the UK!

Hey Mark, this is really great. I am 70 years old & live in South Africa.Used to play drums, (not too good but passable for gigs in a band which once won the Rhodesian Rock Band Competition) completely self taught and no idea of what music notation is about. When I turned 50 I picked up a harmonica and could play almost any song as long as I knew the song, also just be ear, also not very good but definitely good enough to be recognisable and accompany other musicians. I found that if I am tired when driving long distance which I often do in my line of work, playing the harmonica tends to wake me up and I think it has to do with the extra breathing it forces me to do.! My son who lives in Bowral with his family gave me as a 70th birthday gift, a two month holiday in Aus, absolutely fantastic and we are now making plans to move across ourselves. While we were over there I was also given an Arth Guiness guitar and again found that I could sort of play it. Started with The Old Ohio which was not too bad, by my standards. Now the bad part, it got irreparably broken by some inconsiderate baggage attendant on the leg between Johannesburg and Durban in South Africa and the airline, South African Airways are not accepting any responsibility. Guess which airline I will not use again? Anyway, I have borrowed a guitar from a friend and intend replacing the broken one as soon as funds are available which brings me to the salient point. The two lessons I have already listened to, picking and now this one, tick tock are fantastic and have already made one helluva difference. As I intimated, funds are a bit of a challenge to me at the moment and I am a bit confused as to how this course works so you going to have to put it in, hell I hate to say it, old man terms. I still act and feel like a spring chicken by the way and often get confused for a 55 year old. I believe I still have about thirty years working life left..! ! Will these lessons of yours continue coming as this one has, is there a way I can download the videos and how much is this lot going to cost me. Really looking forward to your reply. Sincere regards Tom Crawford. PS I'm never really going to be good but I get so much enjoyment out of it that I will definitely do it.

I cannot tell you how much this video has liberated me. I was aware that strumming was all about timing and was trying to strum to a metronome but struggling. Focusing on essentially using my arm as a swinging metronome has made so much difference, I still use my metronome but now I can play in time! I can jam and feel myself keeping time without even thinking about it!

This is incredible. I've been playing guitar for 4 years and never been able to figure out why my timing is so bad. I tried this technique and it instantly fixed my timing issues. Thanks so much Mark!

Been playing 3 years at age 56 after raising my 4 children. I have been so frustrated with the pick but after your videos I’m going to give it a go. I haven’t to much $ for lessons yet but did find a good teacher for at least once a month, so I will subscribe to your channel. I am playing because I want to be able to sing. I posted two videos on RUclips but really need more guitar guidance to facilitate my goal to accompany myself through open mics. Thank you. Your clear, you don’t ramble, lessons are to the point .

This is for ALL chords when strumming... Just make the up stroke a 'flick' of a few strings. You don't have to hit all the strings on the way up.

mark, I'm 61, retired and got a guitar for Christmas. i have been watching videos on you tube for a month and have found yours very helpful. I'm determined to learn to play and thank you for your outstanding tips. eg holding the pick, tick tock, 5 mistakes etc. I was frustrated but now understand so basic flaws that I was developing just by watching your videos.

    Right on Mark!
You are amazing to watch and listen to. The best thing as far for me and me being a beginner is you show a method and you explain "why" it's done this way and "why" it works.
Also showing "why" things don't work.
Keep up the videos and food work!

I've been playing for so many years but never considered this method... you're totally right, it helps so much for a perfect timing. Thank you thank you for focusing so much on strumming. I have watched so many teachers, friends, and videos that focus almost exclusively on the chords, with only quick blurbs about strumming, which I find to be the most difficult part of learning this instrument. I've only made it through a few videos and I already feel more inspired to play than I have in a long time. Can't wait for more ... keep it coming!

Hi Mark! Thanks for your reply. I am doing great with the guitars, only two weeks into utilizing your instruction and teaching myself (guitar and piano), and my local guitar shop in Arizona was blown away!!! The owner jammed out with me a few days ago, haha it was my first jam session! And he was amazed, said I was a natural and that doesn't happen often!!! I told him about my RUclips teacher and also have been sharing your site with friends & family.

I've been playing for 26yrs. People generally think I'm good, but I knew I was blagging it. I knew strumming was important, but I've always just used my ear and sense of rhythm. Often getting it wrong. After seeing this I'm going to strip back to basics and start again. I remember timing when I first learned, but thought it boring and skipped it as I just wanted to play.
Great videos. I've now subscribed and will be an avid student.

You're a good teacher. I love how you break things down to the simplest level and then build from there. In this video I was thinking "I wonder how this might apply to my lead playing". And then you kinda briefly showed that at the end.

Fair enough question by the way. You're correct in that their are many ways to play a chord shape. I believe in starting with one way to play a chord as a beginner. Later on their are advantages to playing chords a different way (different finger arrangements etc). But no hard rules is the best way. In answer to the strings to strum, look for chord diagrams that show a (0) or (x) above the strings, at the nut of the diagram.
