There's more than one scoring system. You have successfully described this particular event. The main alternative, rally scoring, leads to more consistency in the length of matches, at the expense of making the outcome more random when the opponents are closely matched.
It only stands to reason that you need extended play to better separate closely matched opponents, but the proponents of rally scoring-who are mainly concerned with tidy spectation-rarely ever point this out. Rally scoring does not actually change the mechanics of play very much at all, if you believe the many statistics that rally scoring proponents like to package up. There is, however, finally a difference if you pull back the right curtain.
But then again, who cares if skill prevails, so long as fans are entertained?
