  • Today, we're going to take a look at a new pocketknife from Spyderco's "Salt" series that's both very, very rust-resistant, and very, very good, the Spyderco Caribbean in LC200N steel.

    9:45 Visually, that knife would stand out if dropped when in shallow water. It could, however, fly off and collect some nectar given half a chance.

    • @alexzavarro9769

      I also thought it would collect nectar if i left it alone for too long.

    • @Stahlwerk88
      @Stahlwerk88 6 лет назад +4

      I considered that it was meant to stand out if dropped in water, but then again I feel like it would absolutely disappear if it landed in sand on the bottom.

    Love the review. As a person who live and fishes in Florida, I see all the ‘negatives’ of this knife as positives. When your hands are wet or slimy, the size, design and texture of the grip would be advantages. The color helps in being able to see it amongst everything else lying around in a boat and the strength of a tight pocket clip is a plus so it doesn’t pop out of your pocket unannounced. The compression lock lets you open and close it one-handled. Altogether a brilliantly designed, purpose built knife. Maybe not a perfect EDC for all, but a great boat knife.

    • @andyrichardson6188
      @andyrichardson6188 6 лет назад +7

      People who don't fish won't get this. Fishing is messy business. Having a knife you can grip with slimy or bloody hands and find when you drop it in water is huge. This thing looks excellent for being around water. And not just for a boat - trying to cut something when a 25 lb salmon is flopping around it's nice to have a grippy knife with a non-stabby tip.

    Nick the larger size helps to cut bait. Here in the Northeast and other areas it's common to cut up Bunker Fish when fishing for Striper. I have the old Spyderco Salt with serrations for bait... and I have a plain edge Salt for cutting monofilament, braided, and other super fishing lines. The old Salt would dull rather quickly but it's very easy to sharpen.
    Thanks for the great review. I forgot to add... IMO it's the best folding fishing knife on the market and the bright colors help you find your knife among all your other fishing gear particularly when fishing late at night or early in the morning.

    I have one of these Caribbean sheepfoot blade and I am in love with it and especially the LC200N bladesteel and liners. I love the blade shape even though it is larger than I usually go for. I am going to use it as a pack knife when I am backpacking the very humid and hot Tennessee trails. I'm very happy with it and I highly recommend this knife.

    Beauty is in the eye of the beholder folks. I pondered getting the Caribbean for a long while, but now that I have received it I’m thrilled. I think in fact it has quite a sophisticated presence once in hand, and seeing as how I live in black clothes, a night out in black with a stark yellow tie and the Caribbean in pocket I believe would put me at the top of the fashion world. It opens with an authoritative thud rather than the typical click, and feels great in hand. Very glad I finally picked one up. I’d go so far as to say it’s pretty sexy. Main thing though?? This knife has TOOL written all over it.

    I had for years searched for the ultimate knife for paunching moose before finally settling on the Benchmade triage 915 with n680 rust resistant steel, Orange g10, and gut hook (emerg cutter). Have done four moose with it now and only had to touch up the edge once (skinning done by mora’s). The sheepsfoot blade is ideal for gutting without collateral damage for clowns like me. This spydie has an almost identical shape And size but improves on one major pain of the 915, that is, trying to clean the blood, fat and junk out of it after cleaning, especially the ball bearing lock. This is now on my list...

    There is one quite substantial negative on this knife and that is the lack of sharpening choil in combination with that plunge grind. The proximity of the edge to the handle is such that even flat sharpening stones will have issues reaching all of it before hitting the handle.

    Nick, I hate to correct you but you make a mistake in this review. You said the Caribbean had full steel liners, which is not correct!!! The Spyderco Caribbean actually has milled LC200N liners. Not only are they steel liners milled, the G-10 scales are designed/milled to fit the holes in the steel liners. That's so the inside of the knife is completely flat/smooth without any holes/viods.

    13:00 I don't want to detract from this knife, but I have an Opinel No10 stainless that has been left in a bag of salted bait, then washed off in salt water, then left for three days before I remembered to clean and oil it (as I do with all my knives usually). The only issue was what I thought was a little wood swelling making the action stiffer, but it turned out to be some bait/crud caught in the pivot. I managed to clean that out and it's fine. The steel had no signs of rust at all. Having said that, I'd still buy a Spyderco in the Salt range, maybe. I know a friend who is a professional fisherman. I'd give him this knife before an Opinel I reckon. The Spyderco just looks like it would be far easier to clean and maintain than an Opinel, besides the Spydie also holding an edge longer.

  • @TedOfNod
    @TedOfNod 4 года назад +1

    One thing Spyderco hasn’t thought about is how water affects maneuverability of a blade. Wide, flat blades are great for cutting, but when you try to move your hand laterally, the blade catches water like a paddle, and it’s easy for water to rip that knife out of your hand.

The other day i noticed thAt my car knife which is aus8 has begun to rust. First knife that rusted under no type of actual exposure to anything but the outside air. Granted, i live a mile or so from the beach. At least this is one out of the 50 knives i have that i dont need to worry about. 😂

    Frame lock makes more sense for a water knife. It will wash away the lubrication. The Caribbean and its compression lock will be harder to close one handed than a frame lock if the washers have silt or are just unlubricated, depending on pivot tightness as well of course.

I live in Buffalo where there is a minimal amount of salt water but in the winter the whole city looks like a mall pretzel. I've lost a lot of metal tools and knives to the "Buffalo patina" and would love to know how these would do here. Also, instead of "pirate's gold yellow", try a nice "chicken wing orange"

    Love the rustproof capability, but damn it’s ugly. For those of us who don’t live by the ocean and just carry knives in the city, can we get an LC200n knife in maybe traditional black and a more standard size (3.3” or so)? Would be awesome.
    Spydichef is so oddly shaped that I’m really hesitant to buy it.
    I really am waiting for Spyderco to come out with an all LC200n in a traditional design. Wouldn’t an all LC200n Sage series be awesome, for example?

    Nice review as usual. But how can you say it’s the best salt knife if you haven’t tested it in the water?

    Lc200N liners? You sure about that Nick? That's awesome, but they need to come up with a more eye appealing design. If they put the same features on a PM2 or maybe like the new Para3 lightweight..... now that's a hit knife

      Late response but, the hardware is titanium. 3 years later.

    I love spyderco, but why no choil!? How would you sharpen this knife? Remove the blade I guess

    1) The big size is a bad thing for EDC, but would suit me just fine when I'm beach fishing. 2) The appearance is flat out ugly, but it would be hard to lose, even in slightly murky water. I'd like to think that's the purpose. 3) The Young and the Rustless.

    What's the big difference with this new alloy? Better cutting performance?

      Much better. LC200n is a proper knife steel that's heat treatable (able to form martensite.) The H1 used in the salt series is austenitic and not really heat treatable at all. It basically is a tweaked 300 series steel that gives up a little corrosion resistance (compared to stuff like 316) in order to hopefully hold something resembling an edge.

      Kyle Manko i was looking for full serrations. So far all i can find is a microtech cypher DE smooth. Its got a fully serrated side and a standard size.

    For some reason I NEED this knife because of that pocket clip! Has Spyderco ever used a Ti clip like that before?!
