ruclips.net/video/V7I1xdQkwYk/видео.htmlm20s - Merlin - Yes I could tell difference and I liked the rubber band. There was less resonance with A on the lower notes. Totally agree with you regarding equipment. Teaching taught me that students with great equipment only have a slight edge in not having as many mechanical issues, but its what skills they acquire that make the better. Did you ever visit museums and see the string ligatures on the very old single reed woodwinds? Blew my mind...
In my experience the ligature has more impact on how the instrument plays and not so much the tone. My recommendation is to try different options and go with what whatever works best for you. People like to say the ligature doesn't matter at all but that has not been my experience.
hello mr schneider, big fan of your work. I think you left out one factor. Whenever I have a new piece of equipment I feel more playful with it and I play really differnt than with my standard gear. Once I played with my shoe laces because I somehow left my ligature at home. I dont know if you play the FL commonly, but i thought so. I would be interested if other sax players feel the same.. ?
leather ligature alto sax make it better Many thanks, been searching for "serie a betting tips" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Fiyrace Beyogan Formula - (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my brother in law got great results with it.
Winner of a video, I been tryin to find out about "la liga betting tips free" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Fiyrace Beyogan Formula - (search on google ) ? Ive heard some incredible things about it and my work buddy got great success with it.
I guess an additional relevant question would be how did it feel while you were playing? If I had to work really hard on the rubber band to produce the same type of tone as the expensive ligature, maybe the higher cost option would be worth it? Generally speaking, I think the ligature does not affect the tone as much as the other variables (player, mouthpiece, neck, horn), but that's me. Thank you for the video!
I don't play sax so a listener point of view. The expensive option was fuller sound on the low end and softer sound overall. The rubberband the notes had more definition and I liked the higher end, but didn't have the low end of the expensive mouthpiece. I'm a fan of note definition so I like the rubberband, but if I played sax I'd be looking for something that gave me the note definition and the full lower range. But you made a very important statement about obsessing about gear. Too many use gear as an excuse because its easy to buy more gear and keep blaming gear. The real answer is more time in the woodshed is needed working on technique, get your playing together and you can make any gear work for you.
i’m also not a sax player but i think this comment nails it. i liked the airy high harmonics on the rubber band version but the ligature take was cleaner on the lower notes. overall i preferred the rubber band take in this context, but even aside from the ligature’s better note definition, there are times when a darker sax tone is nice. if i played sax and wanted to do some multitrack recording with it at home, using both for different parts might help distinguish the parts, the same way multitracked guitar on the same instrument can benefit from using a different speaker cabs or microphone setups etc. to get away from same-y-ness.
You sneaky little sax player 😂 You played with unstable sound in version A on purpose, I am sure. So I actually thought A is the rubber band. I tried it my self after your video. Works quiet well, but I would not choose it over my ligature. Haha 😁 best wishes from Vienna. Studying jazz sax here, in apparently the worldst best city to live in 2018 (EIU rating) ✌ peace
Great to see your music released on Spotify & Co! In terms of the ligature: I think the sound is astonishingly clear with the rubber band. Nevertheless, it sounds fuller and warmer with the FL-ligature in my opinion.
I use a shoestring and it works good for me. They call it german ligature for clarinets and i use it on a tenor sax. You can adjust the strengh, it looks pretty cool and you can change colors whenever you want!
Interesting - I guessed wrong. I thought Version A was darker/more muted and B was brighter with better sound that I assumed was the higher end version.
Love the A-B listening test! I thought the B sounded a bit duller, more muffled on first hearing, but I clicked back to A to confirm ahead of the reveal. Wasn't so confident on second hearing. Always a fun (or at least helpful!) exercise to test actual sound versus default expectations. Thanks for another helpful video, Jeff.
I thought the rubber band sounded a lot more airy. Maybe if you used two rubber bands to hold the reed down in two locations it might work better? Just a thought
Jeff, first of all I want to say that you are great, that I follow your videos and always there is so much to learn!!! I felt the first option was the best.. but... but .. the difference is so little! Thanks for all friend! Saludos cordiales desde Uruguay!! ( América del Sur)
version b sounds a bit brighter. Thing is the expensive ligature will hopefully last you many years and hopefully it makes it easier to adjust the position of the reed and keeps it there more reliably, for a pro its probably worth it. Like comparing really expensive kitchen knives to affordable but decent ones (personally I have the knives I need for professional use even though they were not that expensive compared to what you can pay (they were not cheap either)).
4:01 okay, simple: he had it twisted like an 8 ( the other side was on his other two figners) so when he takes it off his first, to, it becomes all on the last two. :)
I really enjoy your channel Jeff :) I'm fascinated by this particular topic. I've been using Rovner ligs for many years now and love them. Yesterday however, I experimented by wrapping some thin cord several times around my mouthpiece with the reed in place, after protecting the mouthpiece with a single strip of masking tape. I then smoothed some super glue over the string but only where it's in contact with the top of the mouthpiece, so when it dried the vast majority of the string circumference was flexible and the individual loops could separate easily. Then removed the masking tape and pushed the 'new lig' firmly along the barrel of the mouthpiece with the reed in place. The result? Definitely an easier, more free blowing response across all registers and imo a somewhat broader and more resonant sound. Now I know there's a school of thought that regards this kind of thing as psychological but then again, even if you take a cheap standard metal lig, the placement and tightness of the lig does have a subtle but noticeable effect (to the player anyway) on tone and response. Any thoughts?
Funny, I often thought of the same thing myself LOL ... use a rubber band .... I've been using a Rovner on my tenor for years now ..... I couldn't tell the difference either when you played ...
I know different mouthpieces/necks are made differently to help give better tone and sound, but do ligatures actually help, clearly this video gave some insight, but I am curious if they are marketed to help better your sound.
Interesting@ Even though I liked what you played a wee bit more on the rubber band, I very much preferred the ever-so-slightly darker tone of the FL. Nice test!
I got the FL ligature for otto link today. The difference is, in comparison with the original ligature, it is easier to play, the sound has changed. Yes it might be not clearly visible from the outside, but...
I used clear tape yesterday! A new student came for a sax lesson and the instrument rental department forgot the ligature!!!! She used my rovner while I used tape. Sometimes ou have to bring out your inner macgyver on these predicaments !
It feels like there wasn’t much of a difference until getting to the higher or lower ends of the range in the melody. There was slight crackling in B, whereas the tone in A sounded like it was on a more “stabilized” frequency. I guessed right, but I was definitely skeptical of myself when I was guessing.
Fun video! Sounded like the seal wasn’t as good with the rubber band and you lost more air. Nothing a heavy duty rubber band or a few twist ties couldn’t fix! Haha
Is there a ligature you would recommend? I came across your video because I need to buy a new ligature. The ligature that came with my mouthpiece was made of a synthetic fabric that just after 18 yrs fell to pieces. So basically the only reason I'm getting a new one is the obvious. I have a metal mouthpiece and since it is more narrow compared to the hard rubber I wasn't sure which one to get. I just care about durability and quality. I honestly have hardly ever heard much difference when it came to ligatures. In fact, one of the reasons I switched to a metal mouthpiece was due to durability. I had a Meyer 5 which most people upgrade to in middle school (which I did). It was fine until it had a collision with the floor. So now it is an expensive keychain. I actually haven't played my sax in years, but it seems a shame to have it and not use it so I'm not aware of what is currently decent equipment. I can't imagine spending $70 on a ligature when my mouthpiece was $75 or so back in the day. Maybe I would splurge if I was a professional. At most, I hope to play some jazz songs I like and maybe play at old folks homes or something.
A. had more overtones. It kind of sounded dirty around the edges.. hope you know what I mean... The B. sounded more fundamental, clean with sharper articulation.. I like the rubber band better, could hear every note. I.e. Some of my students use silk or cotton pocket handkerchiefs. Rap them around and double knot like a doctor ties off a blood vessel (over under over under pull tight) Mellows down the soprano sax tone a lot.. The more the reed can move fully down to the shaft, the reed will make the whole Sax more responsive. I use canvas on my alto sax. Black rubberized canvas and it lets the whole reed vibrate right out to its end. Deep rich tone and sexy too.
"... obsessing about gear and paying $$$$ of money for gear may not be the best option" well that's definitely a selmer VI or super action neck... but great job and keep making them videos!
Hi, I notice you mentioned getting your music out there more… I was wondering if it was you playing on the song ‘i need you - nasty c) from the Netflix series blood and water
Pfff damn I was wrong. I thought I heard a bit of a difference in the "attack" of the tone. But I was wrong. I guess it just works with real good reeds, because the more the surface of the reed is wobbled the less contact and the harder the effort to produce a nice and stable tone. Also I think its a bigger issue on a tenor than on an alto. But NICE testing Jeff!
so do u think experimenting with different reeds is a good idea? Particularly in the strength. Over the past year I've been trying out every strength of jazz select reeds from 2S to 3H and I hear a DRAMATIC difference between the 2. Is that just cuz I'm inexperienced or is that expected? Ik mouthpiece ligs and horns don't matter much but do reeds actually have a great impact or is that considered "it's the player not the gear" like the others?
Hey Jeff, I was looking for an explanation for this on RUclips, and couldn't find one, so I'll just ask you: What is your way of improvising over 13sus chords? Is it the same as soloing over any other suspended chord? Thanks
I just tried that today and I was like OMG. I SPENT HUNDREDS ON LIGATURES AND I HAVE TO SAY I LOVE THR RUBBER BAND FOR ME. IT SOFTENS AND WARMS MY SOUND. CRAZY
I dont stress over gear. I play a chinese knockoff sax i bought for 300 bucks (new!). I have a 30 dollars ligature, but i still need the rubber bands to keep the keys of the chinahorn coming back.
[before the reveal] A sounded kind of boring, dull and lifeless, B sounded sharper and more in-your-face. [after the reveal] I knew it! Rubber band sounds better and more full of life imo.

I could easily tell-not much difference, though, but you didn't really play in the palm keys. I smashed a lig on a gig-years ago, stepped on my stock Selmer lig (on a Meyer 6) and didn't have anything else. Used the rubber band I had holding my Rico "Woodgrain Brown Box" closed in the case (tells you how long ago this happened-I've been playing professionally over 45 years!). It worked, but I found it was a bit weird in the upper stack & palm keys. Might've been too wimpy a rubber band. The Francois sounds better, IMHO. More even timbre. Also, it's a heckuva lot easier to change a reed with a lig-and get it placed where you want it-than with a rubber band. On tenor, I tried it. Not so good-BUT-if you happen to have one of those rubber bands that are used in the produce section on broccoli, it'll do in a pinch. The altissimo sucks-not from lip pressure, I think the rubber band hinders the vibration. Just my .02.
i prefere the francois louis. the low frequences are more rich and the sound is softly. the rubber band sounds like a duck heheh. the low frequences are pour and the middle and high frequencies are to much high. something is missing.
The only difference a ligature makes is the response, for example a metal ligature will usually allow the reed to vibrate more freely while a leather ligature will limit the vibrations of the reed making it sound darker in your head but have no difference to the audience in front of you.

I actually liked the sound with the rubber band a lot more 😂
Bounderby 99 lol same here
Me too 😂
me too! hahaha
I'm late to the game but yeah; the rubber band sounded more centred and less 'fluffy'.
And me!
You should make a giveaway to your subscriber by giving a pack of Rubber Band
My teacher gave me a headband, I cut it in half and singed the sides with the cigarette lighter in my car. Favorite ligature to this day

I got it completely wrong. I'm going to use an elastic on my ligiture-less clarinet now, however. Thanks man!
yeah boi let's go ligatureless clarinet gang!

Jeff-i have to say that number 2- the rubber band- sounded much better. You should try velcro if you really want a surprise.
Thanks for your vlog!
Fun video! Sounded like the seal wasn’t as good with the rubber band and you lost more air. Nothing a heavy duty rubber band or a few twist ties couldn’t fix! Haha
What a brave man putting a video of him with something blurred in his mouth, I do not envy the edited GIFs he will most certainly receive.
hahaha

I actually thought the first was the rubberband and the second was the expensive ligature!
I just tried that today and I was like OMG. I SPENT HUNDREDS ON LIGATURES AND I HAVE TO SAY I LOVE THR RUBBER BAND FOR ME. IT SOFTENS AND WARMS MY SOUND. CRAZY
Version b sounds a bit thinner but you're playing better on it so honestly whatever works just play well
I picked version B. Sounded a bit brighter. haha that was a good quiz
ligature A was noticeably warmer
Agree
I couldn't hear the difference between the two. The quality of sound are almost identical. I'll definitely try the rubber band 👌
in verson b you can hear the air leakage or a t least with good headphones you can
I guessed wrong! Looked like you were working harder to get the notes out on A.
I dont stress over gear. I play a chinese knockoff sax i bought for 300 bucks (new!). I have a 30 dollars ligature, but i still need the rubber bands to keep the keys of the chinahorn coming back.
Let's start a combo call ourselves The Rubber Bands.
[before the reveal]
A sounded kind of boring, dull and lifeless, B sounded sharper and more in-your-face.
[after the reveal]
I knew it! Rubber band sounds better and more full of life imo.
i actually thought the 1st one sounded like it wasn't fully sealed , sounded too airy, rubber band sounded more sealed and defined. but that could have just been the way they were played?
Rubber Band sounds better to me
I preferred B 😁
1st version sounds a lot better!
I definitely think the rubber band had a clearer sound. Much less fuzz
i prefere the francois louis. the low frequences are more rich and the sound is softly. the rubber band sounds like a duck heheh. the low frequences are pour and the middle and high frequencies are to much high. something is missing.
How should I practice tounging fast
I am a sax player and I did know the A was the ligature!
Try the JLV Sound Ligature and you gonna see the difference! Trust me heheh
I just love the word "ligature." Hehe. Sounds so seedy for some reason.
I actually like the rubber band more than the ligature
The rubber band sounded better tbh
Cool :) thanks for your video :)
The second one is smoother
I picked A but it was just a lucky guess. I couldn’t tell any difference between the two
I was "sure" that A was the rubber-band! Ha.
Now ligature manufacturers will be going out of business. Invest in rubber bands! 😀
The only difference a ligature makes is the response, for example a metal ligature will usually allow the reed to vibrate more freely while a leather ligature will limit the vibrations of the reed making it sound darker in your head but have no difference to the audience in front of you.
1. I guessed right.
2. I once took golf lessons from an instructor who shot sub-par with only a putter.
3. You are that golf instructor. I still need a driver (and a lot of luck).
4. Thanks for all you do, young feller.
4:01 Sam Neill out of fucking nowhere. How about a warning, buddy?
Version b is the fancy one.
Wow I was wrong
I guessed right! 🙋🏽♀️ But considering I had a 50/50 chance...🤔...eh... victory is still sweet non the less. 😊
I didn't hear too much of a difference, but when I got that 70$ ligature for myseldning a couple of months ago the difference was huge. Almost like a new mouthpiece
BUT - playability is much more important to me than just the sound. Sounds gehts better automatically when you feel good on your instrument. So whatever feels better is important to me .)
I can't believe you orchestrated that title.
You look like Ceará is coming to Brazil.
I'm shocked, i tought the ligature was B. I actually prefer the rubber band sound (Actuall B)
The last time Schneidikins was seen playing sax on the hyootubes
ya I kinda liked version 2, the rubberband it had a less treble sound, more compressed sound, as a guitarist I always use the neck pickup, that high pitch twang gets on my nerves lol sorry blues and country guys lol
Mate, fab video. I tell everyone all the time - long tones!! Gear will not make you sound good.
Play same song for both fam.. I go with second though.
The value of my rubberband ball just skyrocketed.
