I've been collecting brass shavings for a few years because I always felt bad dumping them into the trash directly. But there goes PJ throwing shavings into the dumpster. 😂

The shavings that were attracted to the magnet could have been nickel or a nickel alloy. I didn't know this until some time last year, but nickel is a ferrous metal. Top pins and caps in my ICK-108 kit could be picked up with a neodymium magnet, and I have my doubts about them being steel.
Definitely do the same thing and keep any miscuts. The shavings can be tricky to keep clean. What a shame to dump it all, but you know your own market. Thanks for the video. #Lockboss

Thanks for the follow up video. If i generated THAT volume of shavings, this #lockboss would have accepted the dirty brass price. The dumpster pays zero and the metal doesn’t do anyone any good in the landfill. I use my key recycling money for treats for my kids, so any amount is totally worth it. 😊

Aw, that's too bad about the shavings. Would've liked to see some sort of crazy contraption to filter out those shavings, but also good to know when to cut your losses. Nice that you were able to get a decent amount for those keys though! #lockboss
Two 65 pound buckets sound easier to me then one that's 100 pounds.
I’d take it. I melt brass and shavings are great to work with. Steel/iron would fall out when the brass is melted. That could be a pain but I’d give it a try.
Our only recycling place only gives "dirty" prices regardless of the material. Prices change daily. #Lockboss

I wonder your steel shavings were from your milling blades losing a little bit of material with each cut/ key you make. Either way- it was a good haul with the recycled keys. A true #lockboss move.

A lot of people use brass shavings in resin casting projects. I doubt most of them would care if there was a certain percentage of steel mixed in. Maybe something you could do locally to make some coin from them? #Lockboss

It's a shame to see all that brass going into a landfill somewhere. I cannot imagine why a recycler would not still offer the dirty brass option. Brass does have a lot lower melting point than steel doesn't it? #Lockboss
