  • Known for his unique approach to capturing the essence of British life, Parr has an extensive portfolio that speaks volumes about the society we live in. However, "Return To Manchester," a project that dives deep into the heart of Manchester's evolving identity, often doesn't get the recognition it deserves compared to his other works like "The Last Resort" or "Common Sense."
Published in 2008, "Return To Manchester" is a profound exploration of Manchester's transformation, its people, and their everyday realities. Through vivid images that combine a mix of humour, irony, and stark reality, Parr reveals the layers of a city that is both celebrating its cultural richness and confronting its challenges. From candid snapshots of everyday life to powerful representations of Manchester's resilience, Parr's work in this collection is a testament to his ability to tell compelling stories through photography.

I wasn't familiar with this book at all but as someone who grew up in Manchester, left in 1981 and never really went back, it's fascinating. I know Parr was a somewhat controversial addition to the Magnum agency but a book like this shows he absolutely deserved his place there.

Thank you for sharing your perspective! It's always interesting to hear from someone with a personal connection to Manchester. I agree, Parr's unique eye really captures something special in this book, and it's a testament to why he belongs in Magnum. Very happy the video introduced you to this book!
