just wanted to say thanks for this video, did an oil/filter change on my E91 today following this vid, apart from having to run out to buy a 36mm for my oil filter housing, all went smoothly following your steps, cheers dude
Very wise changing oil more frequently on these engines, due to the timing chain and less of a known problem with the Turbo, uses same oil in the end to lubricate both. Running a 2012 E91 (318d) changed on the dot every 8,000 miles or yearly, mileage is up to 140,000 miles now. Also, I ran a 2008 E81 (118d - same N47 engine) a few years ago, same routine with oil - took this up to 250,000 miles, oil is so important on these, and totally ignore the computer long life intervals. Running also a cheap runabout 2009(59) MINI 1.4, with known history with timing chain issues if you Google it, again these engines are very sensitive to oil changes (more the better and scrap long life intervals) mileage up to 150,000 miles, so must be doing something right. Good video mate 👍
Hi every thing you done well appart from the local oil ..its ok for untill 4000miles...better to put castrol on bmw you will get excellent performance with long life...easy to cover 12000 miles.. Thank you
The oil meets Bmw specifications, I think you are being a bit harsh saying its good for only 4000 miles, although Castrol oil is fantastic. Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
That oil looks fine, they sell it at ECP. On a car over 10 years old does it really matter? The technology used in basic oils now would have been super high tech by the standards from 20 years ago for example. My car is 30 years old, and using topnof the range oil is a complete waste of money, the car does not care.
@@Solaar_Punk yes it does matter, the best thing on any car is to do regular oil and filter changes with a good quality oil and filter, the other is cambelt changes are a must (where applicable). These engines can have timing chamge problems if left to run on dirty oil. If its a smokey old banger with two MOT'S left in it then no it dose not matter.
Loved it, been working on cars for 35 years now. I drive a 2006 e90 320d. Mine failed the national test on rear upper control arms. Swapped them all out both sides rear top and bottom. Had to cut out to seized nuts /bolts to align the rear wheels coz of slip test. Got wheels tracked and inner tie rods replaced and aligned it and it past, now my problems are worse. It feels like it’s really tail happy, over taking the car wants to come round on me and moving back in it wants to swing the other way. Test gave the car a full bill of health yet it’s all over the place. Gettin a vibration in the column and steering wheel. At about 100kmh. Steering wheel is off center only two weeks on, it’s like one wheel is straight and fighting the other at speed. I hope it’s not the steering box. Does sound fimilior to you. HELP ME I LOVE MY E90
sounds like you have a combination of faults, definitely unlikely to be the steering rack, at a guess I would say rear camber adjustment might be incorrect, also the wheel balance on a front wheel could be out, this would cause vibration in the front wheel steering. at worse you have a loose bolt on the rear arms you have replaced, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
I’ve been using expensive oil in my Z3 for a fair while but with its age it is needing topping up more regularly and I’m not convinced using rip off oil is really doing much more than what the ECP oil would. How do you find the oil you used? Last just as long? I do a service every year so it doesn’t sit in their that long probably 8000-12000 miles dependent on the weather through out the year as it’s only a second car. Looking at getting a 3 series GT as a daily and would like to service that myself if it’s as simple as the zed which looks like it will be by this vid! Great straight forward instruction. Cheers!
I find that as long as the oil is fully synthetic and meets all manufacturers specifications you can't go wrong, you don't need to pay a fortune for the some quality oil, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Hi mate any advice on how to fit back the dipstick tube back into the sump does the o ring push in a little or does it just sit on top to create the seem it seems quite hard to get the o ring to push into the hole BMW 320d n47 Cheers pal
Good vid, couple questions, is the sump nut and filter in the same place on my e91 318d touring ? Also would you recommend an engine flush before the oil change, something to clean the internals up before dropping the oil ? Cheers
I am not a fan of engine flush, just good synthetic oil is all that's needed, this car is a 318 e91, so it is the same, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Hi i have do service to my bmw 320d f30 it have same engine but im not sure how many liters of oil i have to put some say 5/5.2 liters or some say 5.5 So how many liters i have to put ? Thanks

Great video, exactly what I was looking for, I replaced the oil of my e91 with complete success (and without doing any damage ...). Just one question: by any chance do you know what is the cable that is placed on the left of the bolt? It's here: ruclips.net/video/SHBXR1cxtyc/видео.html I accidentally touched it and saw sparks (luckily I was using pliers with rubber handles). Thanks a lot.
Thanks for de good manual! I am looking for a 28mm socket but all I can find (looking for a set); mostly have 22, 24, 27, 30,...mm... Will a 27mm work also? Or is a 28mm really needed?
remove the filter before refitting the plug, more oil will drain, also clean the filter housing and holder, why is your engine cover moving around like that?
At last someone who talks without all the ums and ahs and explains everything to perfection thanks Ray.

Incredibly straight forward explanation - even fixed my rattling engine cover! thanks a lot mate
