    Fantastic movie.
Think that everything was hand drawn, the amount of work it took.
The anime is more than 30 years old, yet it looks better than certain animated movies today. A true technical marvel.
It's only downside is the overtly complicated plot as they took thousands of manga pages and condensed it in a 2 hours movie.
Rightfully considered one of the greatest anime ever.

GitS is definitely a bigger influence on _The Matrix,_ but _Akira_ and _Blade Runner_ (both released in '82) were probably the two works that most defined the aesthetics of the cyberpunk genre. All of this stuff was being pioneered in the 80s in Japanese and European comic anthology magazines _2000 AD, Métal Hurlant,_ and _Shukan Young_ by guys like Katsuhiro Otomo and Jean Giraud, along with the novels and short stories by Philip K Dick, William Gibson, and others.

    • @Levi_Amongst_the_Watchers
      @Levi_Amongst_the_Watchers 2 года назад +6

I agree that Ghost in the Shell had a bigger influence on the Matrix in regards to the theme and concept but I think Akira is more fundamentally important to many movies as it's basically the first of it's kind and if not the absolute first close to it and it's deffenatly the most well-known of any thing like it from that time. Without Akira I don't believe we would have many of our favorite movies or at least they would have been delayed by decades.

One of the most unique things about this movie, is that in traditional American animation, the voices are recorded before the animation is started. In almost all anime, it's done in reverse. AKIRA was probably the last production where the audio is recorded BEFORE the animation is done, and by watching it in Japanese, you'll notice that the lip synch, because of that, is perfect.

I've never been a huge anime fan, but this movie has been a favorite since I saw it over 30 years ago. This movie is based on the popular manga (Japanese comic books), so technically it's a comic book movie.

Fast forward 30 years and the actual 2020 Olympics were _supposed_ to be in Tokyo (though delayed until 2021 because Rona). One of the signs in this movie is covered in graffiti that translates to “cancel the 2020 Olympics.” Can’t make this up…

It's an Anime done by Hayao Miyazaki, and is probably the most tame and safe Anime for younger children. Shouldn't give any nightmares, since it's not that type of film. Still, a fantastic introduction to anime. It was mine way back in the 90s. However, my absolute favorite movie is *Princess Mononoke* or anything Miyazaki really, though I like his older stuff better, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (easily my 2nd favorite), Laputa Castle in the Sky, etc, they all have phenomenal and moving soundtracks and incredibly powerful themes, often environment-oriented. If you do decide to watch this make sure its Macross: Do You Remember Love? and NOT the Robotech dubbed movie!! @@MarkHWillson Akira is a magnificent beast, but it's also alienating, and to me personally, all the shouting gets pretty painful to listen to. I'll always treasure the first time I saw it, and I appreciate the visuals, but Steamboy is just the whole package.
I like the characters there better, the worlds isn't a nightmare to live in, the themes and ideas are more accessible, there's still a lot of shouting and an action clusterfuck in the end, but I just like it better here, since I care for the characters and the world.
Akira is awesome, there's no denying, but it's a very prickly flower to give to someone. Not an easy recommend.

A basic explanation of some key details to the story:
    0) "Peanuts" are amphetamine and/or suppressant drugs (uppers and downers) in capsule form, the drugs are also called "Capsules" which is the name of Kaneda's biker gang
    1) the psychic "children" are all over 40 yrs old but their physical development was suspended by the special drugs they have to take to keep their psychic abilities in-control, this is why they look "old", and have child-like bodies and child-like personalities,
its a side-effect of the drug(s); they have powers like telekinesis, teleportation, creating psychic illusions, moderate mind-reading, levitation, emitting a psionic shield that can block objects or even laser beams, it's not "super sonic scream" and they aren't "aliens"
    2) a different drug and the machine that Tetsuo was in activated his psychic powers
    3) the Resistance fighter Kei is a natural Medium, the "Numbers" a.k.a. the psychic children could channel all their psychic power through her an used her to fight Tetsuo (they'd knew she'd help them as the Resistance's goal was to shut down the government experiments to create psychic agents and soldiers, spending billions on "the Akira Project" and not on every thing else important.
    4) AKIRA with it's depiction of massive student protests and a violent retaliation from the military in the film had inadvertently in a sense "predicted" the real life The Tiananmen Square protests and massacre in China that happened about a year after the release of the film in 1988 but such was totally unintentional
    5) AKIRA re-materialized (with the help of the Psychics) and then Akira's massive dome of pure energy demolishing Neo Tokyo then pulled Tetsuo into a fifth dimensional vortex his body and energy was growing way too massive and would of consumed the whole Earth if AKIRA didn't pull Tetsuo into the vortex
~ in there were "orbs of light" which are memories of Tetsuo's past as a small boy and some memories of Akira's past that Kaneda experiences. Tetsuo's parents abandoned him and he became an orphan and ward of the state, constantly bullied and beaten up for "not fitting in", this all explains a lot of Tetsuo's mental/emotional trauma
    6) The psychic "children" tell Kaneda that some day people will be ready to naturally evolve to have their own psychic powers, and that it's already begun
    7) The Psychic "children" teleport Kaneda and the Colonel to safety
    8) Akira and Tetsuo go into a place outside of the Universe as Tetsuo becomes a new "big bang" with Akira the space-time encompassing it all thus creating a whole new universe.
    9) Kaneda is left with a tiny glowing fragment of Tetsuo's memory

The American and Canadian voice actors don't take it half as serious as the Japanese cast, plus Nippōn is a unique and beautiful language.
