I believe I paid 14.99 for a red version of this about ten years ago. It's sitting next to me. The color is worn, all tools are scratches to hell. I love the thing. When I moved out of my parents house I didn't have a can opener, so the Farmer was my EDC and can opener. Love it. It works just as good now as when I bought it.
I completely agree. Now I just need about 5 more multitools to put one in every jacket and bag. I really don't like having to take all my gear out of my packs if I want to switch it up.
The perfect EDC for me! I have a vintage "soldier's" knife, which is now called the "pioneer" in Alox silver, basically the Farmer without a wood saw. So I thought I would get a Farmer to carry with me, since I will not carry a vintage knife. Thanks Black Owl!
Fantastic video. I have the farmer. I really think it is amazing. Also it is fantastic for a picnic in public. It will not intimidate anyone especially in places where people just take an offence to you even having a pocket knife due to misconceptions and bad public information. It is also very sturdy and as you say will last a life time and if kept well maintained something to pass on like a good watch and pen. Keep up the good work. Found your channel yesterday. I am really enjoying your down to earth videos. Thank you! (Being disabled I am actually house bound, so nice to see down to earth videos and for that matter well made and engaging! Thank you.)
Just picked up a Victorinox Fieldmaster. Has the same tools as the Farmer, including a few extra nice ones - Phillips head screw driver, scissors, and a smaller blade to accompany the main blade. Has the traditional. Scales with the tweezers and toothpick. I think it's a good mix of tools and weight.
I just bought a Victorinox Farmer the other day and really like this little multi-tool/knife. The deal maker for me as well was it's saw and that it doesn't take up too much space in my pocket.
Great video, guys! I very much agree with your take on this model. It is easily one of the best for the great outdoors, if not the best. By the way, the Farmer is the first Swiss Army knife I ever owned. I bought one in 1983 for work on a search and rescue zodiac with the Canadian Coast Guard. It has been used and used hard over the years, both out on the water and then later plenty in the woods. Despite its modest size, the saw is a beast. I have sharpened it just once over that time, it could do with another touch-up. The can opener is a little bent now and the blade has been sharpened several times and is definitely smaller now than it once was, but certainly still working great and I still use this tool almost every day I actually think things like Swiss army knives and multi-tools are rather overlooked in the bushcraft world; folks seem to opt more for the "one-tool option" mega knives in North America, but perhaps not so much in Europe. Nevertheless, a Swiss Army knife or Leatherman is always part of my regular kit. In fact, I have even been working with a few more SAKs in the bush and have recently tried out my first Leatherman products as well. I definitely use these a lot, especially for carving/whittling and general bushcraft tasks and tend to not favour the "one tool fits all" approach. Indeed, when going out mainly in the woods for longer stints, I personally tend to carry a small hatchet (Fiskars X7), a Bahco Laplander, my Farmer or another similar model and (just recently) my Triple X Forester II (xxxknives.com) bushcraft knife (Handmade in Nova Scotia, Canada) and these tools help get it all done. You were looking for suggestions? Models I would recommend taking a look at for affordability and that are well suited to the outdoors IMHO are the following: Micro multi-tools (no saw, but a great mix of light duty outdoor tools): -Leatherman Squirt PS4 -Victorinox Rambler or Manager (not well-know, but really great!) -Gerber Dime Regular size (Blade, saw and awl all present, plus more): -Victorinox Hiker -Victorinox Huntsman or Fieldmaster (almost identical- differ only in that one has a corkscrew, the other has a phillips screwdriver) -Victorinox EvoGrip S18 or S17 (same mix of tools as the Huntsman/Fieldmaster, but really nicely executed body/set-up: very ergonomic) -Leatherman Wingman or Sidekick Large Size: -Victorinox Hunter *** (not the pro or XT, although these are also decent, but for other reasons. The PRO is actually a folder rather like a Spyderco knife, and NOT a typical SAK) -Leatherman Wave I hope this helps and I personally hope to see more of your reviews along these lines in the future. Thanks again and ATB, Denis
Great review! In my opinions this is one of the best SAKs out there. Can't beat victorinox for quality. I personally use a victorinox fieldmaster which is a pretty much bigger version with more tools.
I've had one in the silver alox for quite a while now. I love it. I use it all the time. I sharpen it about once every other month. I just strop it every time I use it extensively. The saw makes short work of making notches or processing small kindling. The knife feathers out wood and can fillet fish quite well. The awl is by far the best I've ever had on a pocket knife. This thing is solid. I used the Flathead Screwdriver the other day to disassemble and reassemble a part of the Uneven Bars in my gymnastics gym. This thing has all the tools I need and none of the ones I don't need. Get one before the prices go any higher.
I'm thinking of getting a saw multitool - but I need it to be non-locking. Can you tell me if non locking saw blades ever fold up on you when sawing something which resists the action?
cfytcf I've personally used this knife before. A lot actually. It has very strong detent in the back springs. It won't fold up on you in use. That's for sure.
I love the Vic Farmer, rides with me everyday, especially when it is hard to get away with a bigger blade. For EDC tasks, I have never really needed more yet. Love the way the awl is situated on this model. Been a fan of this blade and carrying it for the last 15 years. Thanks for the video, love the reviews you put up. Another good blade from Victorinox I like to carry is the One Handed Opening Trekker Model.
Ive been waiting for a good review on this tool and thank god you guys did it! you are one of the channels i trust the most on youtube! keep up the good work!
ink361.com/app/users/ig-3125508/martin_j001/photos/ig-744478611796915761_3125508 Great idea. I've used a carabiner & chord to suspend a folder w/o a clip. I like this much better.
The Farmer is the one to have! Combined with a Leatherman Micra I think all needs are covered and I have some useful redundancy of the most useful tools.
The edge on the reamer can also be used as a striker for firesteels. If you use softer ferro rods it will chew them up but with most it will work. The hiker is also a great outdoors victorinox.
great video on a fantastic multi tool. if you can find one of the retired Harvesters, I would highly recommend the purchase. it is the farmer with a hawkbill pruner blade replacing the can opener/small screwdriver. This provides a 2nd blade that is unique from the standard pen blades found on many of the swiss army models. The hawkbill is great for draw cuts, piercing cuts, and bunched ( cordage) cutting. The hawkbill/pruner blade is also found on the retired Rancher, no wood saw.
Look at the victorinox ranger, it has everything that you really use on it except pliers. I’m getting one to supplement my charge and surge for when I don’t need pliers
I love having a saw blade on my multi-tool, and also the knife blade which I use often. The multi-tool I have is the Gerber brand and it works great for me. The Swiss brand is probably the first one to be built, but not necessarily the best today. Many square by the Leatherman brand, and theirs are nice also, but I would not buy another Chinese made multi-tool to use and I have two of them which is nice in an emergency, but built cheaply.
I haven't read all of the comments, so I apologize if this is a repeat, but the Victorinox Cadet is a great EDC tool. It's smaller and lighter than the Farmer, so it definitely has its limitations, but it seems like the perfect backup tool.
Hey, I think you might like the Victorinox Outrider... It has become my all time favorite folding knife... It's like the huntsman minus the bad features, and it's more sturdy
You can go to companies like swissbianco and order a set of titanium or carbon fiber scales for your farmer and some of those have a integrated pocket clip on them really makes the Swiss army knife come to life with a new set of scales!
I use the Huntsman it was a present many years ago and i still love it. As good As new (maybe New scales this year or polish the red ones). But the Alox line looks Very nice too.
Carry this with a Victorinox Classic SD, and you can really handle anything. The Classic has small blade, file/screwdriver, scissors, tweezer and toothpick. Pick out all the lint you want with the toothpick.
I use the Victorinox Outrider in the field, fantastic knife. Got a saw, lock blade, scissors and a small Philips head screwdriver among the regular tools. It's a bigger knife but the grip is amazing. Came with a black leather belt pouch/sheath as well! You should check it out :) Peace
The Leatherman Squirt is a nice tool, also. I had one for awhile, but lost it somewhere. It has a pair of pliers that is nice and some discontinued versions have a cork screw. As an alternative you can get it with scissors. I don't think the knife is nearly as good as on an SAK though. Very good video, as per your usual. Thanks!
Good review, excellent quality. As Dutch survival&outdoors mentioned, the reamer / awl is a great tool for striking a fire steel. I'm not a big expert on that but I have a few ferro rods and the Vic Alox awl is better than than any of the strikers they come with. Another Victorinox tool that might be interesting for you: the Electrician Plus. It's the same as the Farmer but it doesn't have a key ring that would stab your palm when you use the blade or the saw, and instead of the can opener it comes with a small sheepsfoot Electrician's balde. In the forest, that small secondary blade might be more useful than a can opener with a small screwdriver.
I like the Victorinox Trailmaster a great deal. It has longer blade and saw, additional Phillips driver and every tool has liner lock. Not sure though if it's available on your side of the ocean...
You should give the Gerber Dime a review. I love your reviews and ive been considering picking up the Dime for about 20$ or so. You should take a look at it!
+Justin Griffiths Ive had two Dimes, and they break so easily...to bad, because I love the idea. If they could make them in a better steel, it would have been awsome. The "lock" that keeps the blade straight, not bending back, broke after a short while...a metal piece just fell out. My second Dime broke using the pliers to cut guitar strings. I like the idea of Dime better than Leatherman Squirt, but the quality is just not there in my experiance. Regardless, Ive both a third Dime...just because I love the idea of it, and want it so badly to work out for me.
The best one is the huntsman i have my one since elementary school and i am 10th grade right now (germany) it has everything for working with wood like a saw a blade a drill(dont know the englisj word in germany we call it "ahle") scissor bottleopener canopener a small hook two blades ... Not to much tools but not too less either
One thing that I would like to see added to the Farmer is a locking blade, like that is found on the Victorinox Swiss Army One Hand Trekker Non Serrated Pocket Knife, which I consider to be the big brother of the Farmer - 4-3/8 inch as compared to the closed length of 3-5/8 inch for the Farmer.
Yea I hear ya. I do have a Wenger Ranger which has a locking blade and saw. But for the size of the Farmer, I don't feel like I need it to be locking. Thanks for watching bud. -Krik
The Swiss Camper would be nice for you. It has all the same functions but has a small blade and corkscrew that you can put an eyeglass screwdriver in. It costs only 23 dollars and comes with the toothpick and tweezers. The Hiker is also pretty much the same but has a screwdriver instead of the corkscrew.
All tools on this Farmer/Pioneer/original soldier) are more heavy duty. Compare both to side to side and you will see a significantly thicker blade/can opener and cap lifter. Most importantly the reamer is much, much more heavy duty. Trust me. I've used both
In my experience, using the screwdriver at the 90 degree angle to put torque on a screw almost always results in the tool closing. The 90 degree angle enables you to use the wire stripper. You open the knife blade then open the tool to 90 degrees, and place the wire in the notch and close the blade. The tip of the blade should land on the wire. Then rotate the SAK around the wire to cut the insulation. Then simply gran the SAK in that position (blade closed on wire and screwdriver at 90, and pull the SAK off the wire. It should strip the insulation off the wire. It’s the one tool that doesn’t really work as it should in the wider models, like the Swiss Champ, because the blade and the wire stripper are too far apart. The Electrician model does the same thing, but also had the electricians blade that you can use on larger wire. Simply close the electrician blade on the larger wire and use the same technique.
Gotta love SAK's I roll with the Camper model EDC. But I have wanted a ALOX Farmer for awhile now. Ill be losing a small blade tooth pick tweezers but lll be gaining a bad ass Awl but Id still carry the Camper to so I wldnt really loose it lol.
Look at some DIY pocket chainsaw saws....it's a matter of picking up a chainsaw blade and making your own. Before you do, also check out the Silky Gomboy 240
Creek towards the end of the video as you are talking there are a bunch of trees leaning up against another tree. Did you place them there if so why? Shelter?
I have a Colman Hiker II, and the quality is so much lower. There's what is apparently supposed to be a reamer, but it is not beveled at all. The scissors are not beveled at all, the can opened is not beveled, what an oversight. The saw is good, the blade is good, but no tweezers or toothpick. You definitely have the better knife.
Black Owl Outdoors What I finally ended up getting was a Stanley 12-in-1 Leatherman-type tool. It was on sale at the hardware store for ten dollars. All the edges are beveled like they should be, the can opener works like a charm, the knife is good and sharp, it has a full phillips head screwdriver, a file, a reamer, and the saw is not only great quality, I can even spark a ferro rod with it. There's no spring with the pliers, but I have heard from another user of these tools that the spring can be a hassle anyway. I'm very satisfied.
I have a few and I eventually broke two of them and I sent 5.00 in with two of the tools and they fixed them and even gave me some spare parts, and Gerber and shrade also stand behind their stuff, a screw cane out of my handle and not in once but twice they sent me out the screw, Gerber sent me out a small knife that the tip broke particularly my fault but I sent in a picture of it and they sent me out a brand new one with some extra stuff with it, they are good company's and by the way the more companie sent me out a new garberg because this time was fully my fault I broke it trying to show what the knife was capable of and it broke but I called them and asked, I sent in a picture and they sent me one back, they are good company's out there and I appreciated that they did it, so what you pay for is worth it with these companies
If you're trekking out in the woods using this thing for it's intended purpose, are you really going to be that worried about a little pocket lint with everything else it will be exposed to in the environment? FWIW, there are tons of pocket clip hangers available that will allow it to ride suspended in your pocket if you're afraid of getting it dirty. They can be had for as little as a couple of dollars on Amazon.
I believe I paid 14.99 for a red version of this about ten years ago. It's sitting next to me. The color is worn, all tools are scratches to hell. I love the thing. When I moved out of my parents house I didn't have a can opener, so the Farmer was my EDC and can opener. Love it. It works just as good now as when I bought it.
bought mine in 1976, 13 years old.....paid $11.95 at the B&B store in Kalispell Montana, still have it :-)
Wow!
Russell Kastner it’s seriously impressive you remember how much it cost.
@@Surago i would if i got it that cheap
@@lazycarper7925 $12 in 1976 worth in today's money? Adjusted for inflation, $12.00 in 1976 is equal to $55.56 in 2020.
I've spent alot of money on high end pocket knives but these days I carry the tinker
Farmers are such great tools. Just the right balance betwen size and features.
I love my Farmer. I carry it every day. The little saw is invaluable in the woods!

Love the farmer--my favorite SAK I own. Victorinox makes the best MT saw IMO
Love the Farmer, always in my pocket
Just picked up a Victorinox Fieldmaster. Has the same tools as the Farmer, including a few extra nice ones - Phillips head screw driver, scissors, and a smaller blade to accompany the main blade. Has the traditional. Scales with the tweezers and toothpick. I think it's a good mix of tools and weight.
My EDC is the Climber...great for Urban, camping...all round.
But, I’ve just bought a Farmer to go with me in the woods.
Both great knives.
My set up too.
I just bought a Victorinox Farmer the other day and really like this little multi-tool/knife. The deal maker for me as well was it's saw and that it doesn't take up too much space in my pocket.
Cool! I agree with you, a good multi-tool has to have a saw. I use the saw on my Leatherman all the time! Very handy. Thanks
You were looking for suggestions? Models I would recommend taking a look at for affordability and that are well suited to the outdoors IMHO are the following:
Micro multi-tools (no saw, but a great mix of light duty outdoor tools):
-Leatherman Squirt PS4
-Victorinox Rambler or Manager (not well-know, but really great!)
-Gerber Dime
Regular size (Blade, saw and awl all present, plus more):
-Victorinox Hiker
-Victorinox Huntsman or Fieldmaster (almost identical- differ only in that one has a corkscrew, the other has a phillips screwdriver)
-Victorinox EvoGrip S18 or S17 (same mix of tools as the Huntsman/Fieldmaster, but really nicely executed body/set-up: very ergonomic)
-Leatherman Wingman or Sidekick
Large Size:
-Victorinox Hunter ***
(not the pro or XT, although these are also decent, but for other reasons. The PRO is actually a folder rather like a Spyderco knife, and NOT a typical SAK)
-Leatherman Wave
I hope this helps and I personally hope to see more of your reviews along these lines in the future. Thanks again and ATB,
Denis
I've been debating getting a SAK for years and this video I think has pushed me to pull the trigger on that. Great review
I love this knife. I have had it for a month and it feels like I have had it my whole life.
Great review! In my opinions this is one of the best SAKs out there. Can't beat victorinox for quality. I personally use a victorinox fieldmaster which is a pretty much bigger version with more tools.
Love SAK in all forms. Nice outtro
My favorite Victorinox models: Hiker, Tinker or Small Tinker, Trekker (also known as the Trailmaster), Farmer, Recruit, and Spirit X.
Alex Paulk Thanks
My Victorinox Rambler is the only truly EDC tool I carry, and by far the most useful. Great tools, great quality, great service.
Love this channel. 9 Years ago and that kind of quality. No Videos for 6 Years, you good my friend? :)
great review I have carried this knife for a long time it always gets the job done and then some keep up the great work.
Farmer always in my pocket. Excellent edc knife.
Nice little tool. I agree it would be nice to have a belt pouch or a clip so it doesn't ride deep in the pocket. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing. It's a nice functional clip.
Ryan Martinson I also use a carabiner attached to that metal ring that swiss army knives come with, it's incredible hkw useful carabiners are
The Farmer is the one to have! Combined with a Leatherman Micra I think all needs are covered and I have some useful redundancy of the most useful tools.

great video on a fantastic multi tool.
if you can find one of the retired Harvesters, I would highly recommend the purchase.
it is the farmer with a hawkbill pruner blade replacing the can opener/small screwdriver.
I love my SAK!
Many square by the Leatherman brand, and theirs are nice also, but I would not buy another Chinese made multi-tool to use and I have two of them which is nice in an emergency, but built cheaply.
Also, the Gerber Dime, and Gerber shard are great little cheap tools with high utility.
I haven't read all of the comments, so I apologize if this is a repeat, but the Victorinox Cadet is a great EDC tool. It's smaller and lighter than the Farmer, so it definitely has its limitations, but it seems like the perfect backup tool.
Gerber Crucial Tool is what I carry everywhere!
Hey, I think you might like the Victorinox Outrider... It has become my all time favorite folding knife... It's like the huntsman minus the bad features, and it's more sturdy
Amazing video very in depth. Loved it. Going to order it today.
Pick out all the lint you want with the toothpick.
hi, did you buy this knife on amazon or on the victorinox official website
just imagine this with a pair of scissors and all the tools and springs and all made out of cpm s30v!!!! sweet dreams!!!!!!!
I use the Victorinox Outrider in the field, fantastic knife. Got a saw, lock blade, scissors and a small Philips head screwdriver among the regular tools. It's a bigger knife but the grip is amazing. Came with a black leather belt pouch/sheath as well! You should check it out :)
Peace
"...And now for something completely different": *Bear* interlude!
Nice knife. Not bulky or heavy but has several useful tools. Worth a look. Thanks for sharing. atb
I use the rimmer a lot with my Doan's bar. Makes good magnesium shavings and sparks.
Thanks!
Awesome video! Would like to see a video on the hiker model and a few others. Perhaps a comparison video.
Nice video, consider looking into the Leatherman Micra and Squirt, they're great knives and even smaller with plenty of functionality
Good review, excellent quality.
As Dutch survival&outdoors mentioned, the reamer / awl is a great tool for striking a fire steel. I'm not a big expert on that but I have a few ferro rods and the Vic Alox awl is better than than any of the strikers they come with.

I just ordered one of farmers and is supposed to arrive Thursday 11/2
great review
Love your videos! Y'all should review the new leatherman signal!
I like the Victorinox Trailmaster a great deal. It has longer blade and saw, additional Phillips driver and every tool has liner lock. Not sure though if it's available on your side of the ocean...
Excellent video! Thanks.🙏🙏💯💯
I found one of these at a local park and the reamer was covered in weed resin, i guess some stoner left it after scraping his bowl.
Looting By Appointment Only give it a good home
Nice alibi homie 😎
one of my favorite pocket knifes atb John
One of my favorites.
Now if Victorinox put a corkscrew and hook on the back of the Farmer they would really have a winner.
Excellent review...I am not farmer but I want one...
What do you prefer, the victorinox farmer or the boker tech tool 7 ? Is the blade steel good enough on the farmer?

One thing that I would like to see added to the Farmer is a locking blade, like that is found on the Victorinox Swiss Army One Hand Trekker Non Serrated Pocket Knife, which I consider to be the big brother of the Farmer - 4-3/8 inch as compared to the closed length of 3-5/8 inch for the Farmer.
Yea I hear ya. I do have a Wenger Ranger which has a locking blade and saw. But for the size of the Farmer, I don't feel like I need it to be locking. Thanks for watching bud. -Krik
nice..simple and handy
The Swiss Camper would be nice for you. It has all the same functions but has a small blade and corkscrew that you can put an eyeglass screwdriver in. It costs only 23 dollars and comes with the toothpick and tweezers. The Hiker is also pretty much the same but has a screwdriver instead of the corkscrew.
I'd go for the climber though cause the can opener can works as a really well Phillips head so I see it as pointless to have two.
All tools on this Farmer/Pioneer/original soldier) are more heavy duty. Compare both to side to side and you will see a significantly thicker blade/can opener and cap lifter. Most importantly the reamer is much,
much more heavy duty.
I have made many brownies with my victorinox
Gotta love SAK's I roll with the Camper model EDC. But I have wanted a ALOX Farmer for awhile now. Ill be losing a small blade tooth pick tweezers but lll be gaining a bad ass Awl but Id still carry the Camper to so I wldnt really loose it lol.
How do I sharpen this? I am new to pocket knives
InfiniteFlightFanatic a sharpening stone
great knife
Hey Krik can you check out one of those pocket chainsaws? I'm debating on added one of those verses maybe a folding saw or a hatchet.
Look at some DIY pocket chainsaw saws....it's a matter of picking up a chainsaw blade and making your own. Before you do, also check out the Silky Gomboy 240
The saws on these SAK seem better for acting as a bone saw if you are processing animals .
Really good review
Cool tool!
Thanks for sharing!
I like the fieldsman
Nice video. Can u do one on the camper vitronox knife. Please. Thank you
I've been looking at the Leatherman Freestyle as an EDC, thoughts?
Good review. Thx.
Creek towards the end of the video as you are talking there are a bunch of trees leaning up against another tree. Did you place them there if so why? Shelter?
jlen82 No shelter building at this spot. I might have had them leaned against a tree so they would remain dry (er).
gonna have to get me one
Can it strike a ferro rod?
The back of the saw blade, the edge of the awl or modifying the Flathead screwdriver will do it.
Grey color is paint or it's natural metal color?
My favourite SAK, but I not own it. ;(
Perfect review, thanks.
Metal
victorinox ranger its a nice tool
What ever happened to "It's Krik here with Black Owl OUTDOORS"? Why'd you x the "outdoors" part?
***** Just trying some new things. Gotta shake it up once in a while. You know?

I have a Colman Hiker II, and the quality is so much lower. There's what is apparently supposed to be a reamer, but it is not beveled at all. The scissors are not beveled at all, the can opened is not beveled, what an oversight. The saw is good, the blade is good, but no tweezers or toothpick. You definitely have the better knife.
MoeShinola1 In most cases, you get what you pay for. And in this case, you get a lot in the Farmer.
Great presentation !! My next SAK family member :-) Subbed
nice
If you're trekking out in the woods using this thing for it's intended purpose, are you really going to be that worried about a little pocket lint with everything else it will be exposed to in the environment? FWIW, there are tons of pocket clip hangers available that will allow it to ride suspended in your pocket if you're afraid of getting it dirty. They can be had for as little as a couple of dollars on Amazon.
You can get a belt pouch for it.
If I do decide to use it with a pouch, I'll definitely make one out of leather.
anyone know of a good farmer vs. hiker video?
bkstaudt stay tuned!
By the way check out Vinnies day off and felix imlers channel, they both have good videos of what you can do with just a pocket knife
