I’m using the scissors in victorinox swisschamp for more than 25 years mainly for clipping fingernails and it is still as sharp as new. The self-sharpening feature seems to keep it that way. I don’t do my toenails with it (use clippers) so it’s just fingernails and it the fingernail thickness and hardness differs from person to person so it’s not a guarantee, but at the least I can say the scissors will last very long as far as you don’t put extreme jobs on it.
Thanks for bringing this tool to our attention. The Victorinox Farmer has been my wilderness carry pocket knife for a long time. I did see this Farmer X hit the market yesterday. I wish Victorinox could sort out how place the tweezers & toothpick in the Alox versions. Not mandatory additions, but nice to have extras, especially if you replace one with the FireFly ferro rod. But carrying it in a belt pouch resolves that.
RE: using the saw with the ferro rod: fold the saw back on a little bit of wood. Now the saw sticks out enough to strike the ferro rod, but you won't hurt yourself on the saw teeth..
Alex Paulk Or, one could take a file to the front end of the screwdriver/bottle opener to square off the edges. This way when you scrape the ferro rod the pressure is in the direction the tool will support with it’s spring, not in the direction that may force it close back into the handle. Always there, always ready, no danger, simple one time modification.
@@ROE1300 I did that with several of my knives as well. (OHT, Centurion and Farmer mainly) and it works quite well. I recently sold them and a Leatherman Wave on eBay for like $50 all together so I hope the person that bought them is into bushcraft stuff. Lol
On the Pioneer range of knives you can just use the sharp edge of the awl. Works great. Something even better is to grind an edge on the inside curve of the cap lifter. All Victorinox knives before about 1980 came from the factory this way. This gives you more surface on the ferro rod.
Be still oh beating heart. They finally made it, my idea of the perfect Victorinox. Those scissors have been trimming my nails exclusively for 10 plus years. Between the can opener and the screw driver is a space to add a tiny wafer thin neodium magnet. Great for magnetizing screws, bits, and picking up lost magneitic metals burried in leaves. I lost a screw between the radiator and the grille and tied a shoe lace through the folding knife's lanyard ring and opened the screw driver and placed the magnet on the fold out screw driver to lower the knife body to retrieve the screw.
Victorinox scissors are also amazing for first aid. The blades meet perfectly from the base to the tip and I've found that to be super important for dressing wounds, cutting gauze, cutting skin, cutting thread for stitches right up next to the injury, etc. ESPECIALLY nice for one handed if you're operating on yourself.
I've been carrying Farmer Alox for a long time and I love it. Before I carried a Buck 110 since I was was a boy Scout. That was a nice knife, but I love the versatility of my Farmer. It might be time to upgrade again, thanks.

I have carried the Farmer Alox for a long time. One of my favorite SAKs. I too love the awl as opposed to the other type. It reminds me of my old Camillus US pocket knife I carried since I was a boy. The scissors are a nice upgrade to an already great knife! I hope to catch up with you again one of these days buddy! It's been a good while now.
Finally, I carried a farmer for years but switched over to a fieldmaster because I really wanted the scissors. Now it looks like I'll be adding another sak to the collection. If they added tweezers and toothpick it would be perfect, but I can do without those seeing as I carry a classic on my keychain.
I would have bought the X if I'd known about it when I bought the Farmer. Instead I teamed it up with a Gerber Dime. A good small woods tool set but Victorinox scissors are better. The Gerber scissors require a knack and knacks disappear when it's belting down cold rain, your hands are swelling with the wet and cold and you need to get the shelter up in failing light. The Farmers fantastic its the best parts of my most used Victorinox (Camper and German Army knife) in one knife.
Great product I Carry the regular alox Farmer model with the Victorinox Rambler on my keys which has the scissors, nail file small flat head and Phillips and a small knife that is usually in the place the awl sits. Also has the scale tools so tooth pick and twisers
Love it but think I'll be sticking with my one handed trekker for now considering I'm left handed and keep my finger nails cut extremely short. I always rest my thumb on the flat side of the saw blade with moderate pressure when striking my ferrocerium rod, which eliminates the issue of it closing. Nice video brother.
SAK's are great knives for the woods. I carry a Fieldmaster, but the Farmer is a good one too. I love their saws. They may be small, but they are mighty. They cut through wood better than a beaver.
I just bought one of these on your recommendation. I got it yesterday, seems like an awesome pocket knife to me. Really wanted one with the scissors on it.
That's why i always carry my swisschamp Vic. It's heavy and bulky but it has all the tools a need both in the wood and in the city. It does 95% of the woodworks i do, except chopping and batoning stuffs because a use a little hatchet. Don't get me wrong, i love fixed blades and i always carry one, but for lightweight setup, my "swiss brick" and an hatchet are a good couple.
I’m partial to leatherman myself. My go-to ferro rod scraper is the saw on my leatherman, but since that’s a locking tool on my leatherman it’s less of a concern. This is an interesting product to consider, though.
It's literally brand-new. Victorinox mixed the usefulness of some models like the Fieldmaster with the additional, military-grade robustness of alox knives.
I love the Alox scales, but I am more tempted to get a minimalist Bantam (or Pioneer X) with them for urban EDC than for outdoor use. Currently looking at the Huntsman for this as the hook and corkscrew seem useful along with tweezers and toothpick (that you can swap out with a Firefly ferro rod, too). A slightly bigger alternative with a locking blade would be the Outrider, but it comes with less tools.
Love the tools. Not crazy about the alox handles. They just feel slippery to me. I imagine they'd be worse if the knife or my hand was wet..I've used celador scale knives under water a few times and never had a problem.
I hate folders and avoid them, but I'll always have multiple fixed blade knives on me. The tools and such you mentioned are covered by a quality "multi-tool" which I carry when out in the woods.
its a winner for sure, I wish they would exchange the can opener and bottle opener for one of the combitool bits that does both, that would leave space for a small blade in there. Been carrying a vic for 20 years now and everyone comes to me for an emergency fix when we are away from home.
Till now I did not use the Farmer sub-series of the Alox 93mm Pioneer family ( I have loads of Pioneers & X's ) because I have enough 91mm SAKS in my EDC rotation with both scissors & wood saw ( I have 5 Huntsman, 2 Campers and a Ranger ) , but a few days ago my local Victorinox outlet put the Farmer X on Summer sale at a 25% discount which has brought the price down to around $65 including delivery, so I have ordered one & hope to get it next week. Now I need to either order a leather pocket slip for the 4 layer Farmer X or use a spare 2-3 layer 111mm slip that I already have, I tried a 3 layer Pioneer X in it & its not a very tight fit so I believe that the 111mm slip will expand enough to hold the Farmer X
If only it had the corkscrew. Scissors, awl, can opener, bottle opener, corkscrew are musts for me. Once upon a time I was the only male in a house full of women who could not find a corkscrew for their bottles of wine. I had my SAK Climber so I was the hero of the moment. They referred to me as “The Boy Scout” for the rest of the evening. I took it as a compliment
Victorinox Rucksack > Alox Harvester > Forester > Alox Farmer. I've tested these 4, with different edges and edge angles. These is how they performed from Best, to less good. I've use a lot of other Victorinox ofcourse, but those came out on top. Generaly the SAKS with 3 layer of tools maximum 4, is what works best, for Medium and Large hands.
Just ordered this knife today. I love my Fieldmaster but the alox scales are cool and the screwdriver and parcel hook are unnecessary since I usually have my Leatherman Rebar nearby.
I have almost the same knife but from 1940 with red aluminum, without scissors but with a hook knife. all my tinder bags have a victorinox knive with these ale. for me there is nothing better to make fire with the fire steel. the thing does not become dull!
I own several SAKs, the Alox are the best, and this one will definitely be a huge success, its really the perfect Sak we never had.For people comparing it to fieldmaster and other medium size Victorinox models, i get it, but you re just wrong.First off,the alox series are more robust and strong, the tools are snappier, the knife blade is thicker and stronger, they are slightly bigger(93mm), and the reamer well, the alox reamer is just the best there is for many reasons. I love my farmer but i always wished it had scissors as well, and now i can have it, its great. What i would really love though is for them to offer it in various colours from the start, but i guess you cant have everything, i ill get the silver one and probably will get the coloured version as well (hope its green) when it gets released! Having that said, maybe in the future we ill see, dare i say, a 111 mm alox version?
This is the perfect Swiss army knife hands down I've recently purchased one and ot awesome 👌🏾 Always carried a Pioneer of some kind an color, but this a proper multitool and compact and easy..
Hi I have the huntsman it was the 1st one I got then I picked this one up the farmer, either one is good but I'm leaning towards my farmer more, I I also picked up the one with the locking blade but I don't use it to much but its still a good one and I have the rebar from leatherman but between the rebar and farmer it's pretty much all I use now, before the rebar I had what looks like the rebar but nothing locks and it was just a cheapy that I mainly use just for the pliers
@@MarkRuslinzski I had the normal farmer also for the outdoors is very suitable, however sometimes I miss the scissors, so I carry the Leatherman wave also.
IMHO the Alox-series is rather expensive compared to the plastic scale ones. I actually carry an Outrider- larger scale (115mm), locking blade, saw and scissors longer too - and most of all: I got a "Bosch"-merchandise one for 19,95€ - can't beat that, regular price is 57€ in the EU. If you're unlucky with plastic scales, just take them off and grind down the scale-holders. The Outrider comes with cork-screw, tweezers and tooth-pick too, you can replace the tooth-pick by a Tortoise Gear "firefly" and fill the corkscrew with Helix Tinder from Tortoise Gear, makes it a small survival-kit of it's own.
Kinda like the field alternative to the urban Compact. Bantam Alox can disappear into the smallest pocket. Cadet adds another layer and multiplies the function. Farmer-X is about as heavy as I'd want to go for pocket carry. Anything more and I'd need a belt clip or pouch.
I put a NiteIze HipClip on my Farmer X. It's holding up fine and before doing it I checked online and there's someone on Reddit who's had one on his for a couple of years now.
I have that without the scissors. It’s my daily driver and I absolutely love it. I’ve never understood putting scissors on a SWAK, but, to each their own. For Fist aid I use First aid shears because SWAK scissors can’t cut clothing like denim. I know I’m in the minority, I’m not trying to convince anyone they are wrong for wanting this. I’m just pointing out that there are other versions for those that don’t need scissors.
Do a search for "Swiss Army Knife", then click on the company's link and you'll find they have more models than you can shake a stick at. Not to mention colors. Some of them have a clock built in their side, or fold-out memory sticks you can stick into your computer. Some even have pens and small flashlights. They've come a long way over the years. I purchased my 1st SAK 50 years ago and it's still going strong, but it now has a couple of brothers. My recent purchase was the Woodsman.
Hello there my favorite is the victorinox fieldmaster but I really like the look of the farmer x would you recommend it over the victorinox fieldmaster thanks for sharing this post with us happy new year to you
Awesome. But the fieldmaster is half the price and has all the tools the farmer X has plus a few extra, and is also the same 4 layer thickness and weight
Nice knife. I just bought a Pioneer which is very similar to Swiss army's issue knife to troops. Thinner for my pocket, but it is really too big for my pocket. Saw and scissors nice add for pouch carry. I have a bigger version for that. And that has a huge saw that can be used with ferrous rod in closed position.
RangerGrip is larger SAK I carry in a pouch. No scissors though. Like your XL. Wish for an additional smaller blade, clip point most likely on my pocket knife. I do most of my whittling with a small blade.
And here I thought that teethbrushes and qtips were the things folks don't think about in the longer term. Many to most folks carry a multi tool that has a file so nails are covered, sharpening stones work too, just slower.😁
Sharp looking and handy. How do you carry it? It looks too thick and uncomfortable for pocket carry and if I'm gonna carry a sheath I'd take a Leatherman, has everything that has and a stout pair of pliers with wire cutter. If I'm carrying a knife it's gotta have a pocket clip and one hand opening so it's ready to go in a hurry. I mostly carry the knife when I walk my dog to protect her and myself from other dogs. I did however pickup a Victorinox fieldmaster as my nephew's first knife and I have to say it's shave sharp and great quality for the price.
You mentioned nail clippers. You would be susprise how many ( Marines or Soldiers) do not think of that until they have a hang nail or engrown toe nail in the field. I am Infantry and Mechanic. Now retired. Enjoy your shows.
Ditto. A leatherman in the pack is also a must in my opinion but that little thing on the belt, superb! I just wish the main blade had a better or harder steel, but that's why I have a real belt knife.
There's another Swiss Army Knife called the "Camper" that is better.... more camping/bushcraft ready version of these tools. It comes with tweezers and a toothpick built into the plastic sheaths. One big and one small knife and a better awl in my opinion. It's slightly wider so you can drill wider. Plus it has the rest of the tools this knife has. As always a great video.
Fun SAK fact: the tweezers in combination with the corkscrew on models so equipped are handy as an improvised roach clip at parties. Maybe you have to have gone to high school in the 70's to understand any of that. I should post a video...
A Smith A roach clip could come in handy for other things than what it was used for in the 70s too. ;-) How do you do that? Put the tweezers on the edge of the cork screw and the fold it down?
I've got a few SAK's can't decide which goes where 🤗 common to most models there's space between the can opener and bottle opener form a small wad of steel wool and under the saw is room for a sewing needle wrapped in thread check out Felix Immler's YT page for all kinds of SAK fun. Be safe out there 😷
Yes Felix is The Man when it comes down to victorynox he's even got a book on them, probably next month I'll but it for the info and put some money in his pocket
i carry folding scissors on my keys. i always have my keys. or i am home. most urban cutting you need can be done with just scissors. knife is an extra. i like to carry one, but scissors should be sufficient for EDC.
Why did they discontinue the trecker it's a good knife, when I first got mine it had play in the knife and everyone has that problem but I sent mine in for repairs and they sent it back and no play at all, they have a good guarantee to and sent it back with extra parts, to, they are Very good with the guarantee
@@MarkRuslinzski you have to ask Victorinox that question. Probably same reason car makers come out with new models and don’t continue making the old model; so they can sell more product.
@@kenkowalski5996 Agreed. The Ranger is a nice knife. But it suffers from having Cellidor scales, so without the preferred ALOX build it’s not nearly as robust as the ALOX series, the main blade is slimmer, it doesn’t have that heavy awl on the end where it should be, etc. There is indeed an ideal SAK out there among the many, many designs. Good thing I’m not picky. 😄
Good choice the farmer x,but I like the army 7 alox even more. (has no siccors) It has a small hookblade instad of the canopener(nobody needs nowadays) Overall is one layer less, wich I like better.
The Army 7 looks great. Having said that I like the fact that the flat driver on the end of the can opener serves as a PH2 driver, provided that it's not a recessed screw. Also here in the UK not all cans have ringpulls and it would be a pain in the ass to open one of those without a can opener.
Yikes I JUST got the Pioneer X Alox from a local Victorinox store... Was wishing it had a saw! T.T So it's the Farmer X Alox I was really looking' for! Ugh.

@@tubecated_development It would be, true. Just drill a hole, & Bob's yer uncle. But having lived in both Germany and Austria I know that the Swiss are well known for being slow to change and adapt. Victorinox is a smallish family business in a village in Switzerland.

I’m calling it the Hannah Montana, because if you like the Farmer and the Pioneer-X, it’s the best of both worlds.
My favorite Victorinox.
It's great. I carry mine everyday and use it almost everyday.
I carry the farmer's Alox also. I hadn't seen this with the sissors, so might have to grab one.
What a beautiful backdrop.
Suppose to receive mine tomorrow. Can’t wait to use it!
This looks so dope Dan! Def one to add to the toolkit.
I have the Pioneer X. It is just like that, minus the saw. So it’s slightly slimmer.
This is the perfect Swiss army knife hands down
I've recently purchased one and ot awesome 👌🏾
Always carried a Pioneer of some kind an color, but this a proper multitool and compact and easy..
It looks really nice, is very similar to the huntsman model, but with the robustness of the alox
Add a leatherman Micra and you have a fantastic combo, with a perfect redundancy of the most important tools!
Cool knife. I carry a huntsman myself. It gives you a toothpick and tweezers to.
SAK scissors this size cut denim no problem.
I looked at the Farmer, but decided on the Pioneer X. I almost ever need a saw. I wish Victorinox would put more inline awls intheir tools.
Yesss the farmer I use that Farmer SAK a lot its a great thing and has very useful tools for woodcraft. Greetzz Martin.
I have a victorinox with scissors 40+ years old and still sharp even after cutting coco cans
Best regards
Frits
😱 oh man! I always have my green alox farmer on me. I might just have to upgrade
Hello there my favorite is the victorinox fieldmaster but I really like the look of the farmer x would you recommend it over the victorinox fieldmaster thanks for sharing this post with us happy new year to you
I’m soooo jealous, I’ve not got mine yet! Released in the UK two days ago.
I though you’re only allowed to carry spoons in the UK?
Schnot Only if it's a non locking folding spoon with a cutting edge under 3". I'm only half joking, Imbecile coppers have actually seized spoons.
@@Schnot update, I now have two, one with silver scales, one with red 😉
@@keithorbell8946 Awesome! I take it that it has been a good knife for you?
Also the scissors are great for trimming up your mustache in your beard when you're out in the woods you know when you get that wild hair
I’m a big fan of Swiss Army knives/tools just so happens I broke my old Swiss. Definitely going to check it out!
Great review!!! I just ordered one from Smokey mountain knife works!!!
In abandoned Swiss Army knives after folding the damn thing on my finger years ago. Nothing but fixed blades ever since.
I have a little Gransfors Bruk wilderness ax I take everywhere with me. A little bigger 😂 but boy is it handy AND intimidating. 😎
Outstanding
If you put the tip of the saw to a hard surface, saw facing down, and pull the ferro rod then you avoid catching yourself in your farmers jaws
I have tried those Swiss knife combos i think i am a bigger fan of the leatherman style with pliers and a lock blade.
Wow. $20 price jump for the scissors. I do have a silver and a red farmer among other SAKs.
Is there a link? I’ve looked at Amazon and can’t find with both saw and scissors. Help! 😁
Thanks! Great video as usual!
Can you do an update? Do you still carry it? How do you like it? Thanks
That would be my perfect knife.
Ditto. A leatherman in the pack is also a must in my opinion but that little thing on the belt, superb! I just wish the main blade had a better or harder steel, but that's why I have a real belt knife.
Is it comfortable for everyday wear? Or does it cause slight discomfort?
I'm curious: have you tried to use the awl to strike a ferro rod? It would appear to be quite 'perfect' for that usage. THX
A Smith A roach clip could come in handy for other things than what it was used for in the 70s too. ;-)
How do you do that? Put the tweezers on the edge of the cork screw and the fold it down?
Watched the video . Went right to Amazon.
Couldn't find the knife for sale! Dang...will keep checking
Go to knife Center they have them in stock about $60.00
I've got a few SAK's can't decide which goes where 🤗 common to most models there's space between the can opener and bottle opener form a small wad of steel wool and under the saw is room for a sewing needle wrapped in thread check out Felix Immler's YT page for all kinds of SAK fun. Be safe out there 😷
Felix is great
Yeah, Felix it's the living wikipedia for saks
Yes Felix is The Man when it comes down to victorynox he's even got a book on them, probably next month I'll but it for the info and put some money in his pocket
i carry folding scissors on my keys. i always have my keys. or i am home. most urban cutting you need can be done with just scissors. knife is an extra. i like to carry one, but scissors should be sufficient for EDC.
Like my Farmer but love my One hand Trekker NS (discontinued). If you are left handed, any common scissors are next to useless.
The Farmer X Elox (red) is my EDC. It IS the perfect pocket piece. Now add the long metal file and it would be perfect-er.
Checkout the Victorinox Ranger, it includes a file.
Yeah man!
I really want a model with the blade, saw, awl, and a hook bar. Those are the only things I want on a Swiss army knife
Check out the Huntsman 👌
Good knife Dan
Good choice the farmer x,but I like the army 7 alox even more.
(has no siccors) It has a small hookblade instad of the canopener(nobody needs nowadays)
Overall is one layer less, wich I like better.
Ugh.
Congrats on discovering the awesome world of Victorinox! If you would like some wonderful tips for using it, like preventing the knife or saw from closing on you with a little string or creative use of the awl or the can opener, search for “Felix Immler” here on RUclips.
He’s the real world McGyver. That, and you’ll get an amusing take on the English language thrown in for free. You’ll see what I mean... ;-)
I'd love to see an Alox "Handyman" and an Alox "Swisschamp" before I pass away... 🤔
And a Ranger too !
@@Yom7887
Wowww! That would be awsome!
But too heavy I guess... 🤔
And the victorinox fieldmaster😀
Good wee knife
Let's not forget the cork screw! True story: I used the cork screw to thrust into an attacker's eye when he came after me. He went down pretty quickly, and I got away. Morocco, 1998
OUTDOOR AF Ouch.
is he/she okay lmao
now if the blade, saw and awl where locking I would buy my first sak ever
Gotta have an awl for sewing, man!
If You want to know more about Victorinox, go to Felix Immler. This man creates a whole universe with his pocket knife.
The best sak ever
Why ‘really, really like’ the awl because ‘it’s not one of those sewing awls’?
That’s just a reduced functionality version .
I know but it's a trade-off. The fact that it's an inline awl means it's easier to use. I literally drilled a lanyard hole in an axe handle with mine.
@@simonh6371 I guess an in-line sewing awl should be possible?
@@tubecated_development It would be, true. Just drill a hole, & Bob's yer uncle. But having lived in both Germany and Austria I know that the Swiss are well known for being slow to change and adapt. Victorinox is a smallish family business in a village in Switzerland.
