Use the spine on the saw for the ferro rod rather than the reamer/awl. You will dull the sharp edge on the reamer and make less effective when used as a scraper.
@@xderiwx This is a problem with using non locking saw blade spines as scrapers. Make sure you use it right at the base of the saw, put your thumb on the side of the blade opposite where you are striking the rod and always strike at a 45 angle and it will be fine. Personally if you have the sense to carry a ferro rod just include a striker.
Cheers Ash! Yeah I was super happy the deer actually came into focus for a second. Top camera work 😂 I’ll definitely be carrying the victorinox as an EDC it should prove useful for many things. Cheers for watching and commenting buddy 👍
Cheers Terry 😊👍 its a great little tool and so handy just to slip in the pocket when out and about. I used mine to process some ivy last week to make my first ever bow drill ember. Worked a treat. I’m sure you’ll love it 😊
On the Farmer, there is a little bit of the spine of the saw that can be used as a striker while the saw is closed. A lot of people are infatuated with using knives and whatever else as a striker for a ferro rod, but I find it's always better just to use a dedicated striker for the sake of taking care of your knife/tool, as well as for safety.
It looks like a nice knife. My son just took a hike with me and told me I really should carry one with me at all times. I am going to take a look at getting one of these!
It’s a great tool for the price and doesn’t weigh much if you’re hiking around a lot so is a great option 😃 it won’t do the heavier jobs around camp like battoning wood but it’s enough to get you by
It’s certainly a great resource. I do prefer birch bark though as a way to start the fire but fatwood is so easy and reliable. I think In real wet conditions it will perform better then the birch bark though so best to have both options in the tinder pouch. Cheers for watching as always pal 💪
I'm a Farmer X Alox man myself but did just today grab a very, very gently used Hiker off eBay for $22 and am looking forward to doing some cutting with it. If they would make the Farmer X Alox in a nice orange color and add a secondary, smaller blade then it would be the perfect EDC multi-tool for me.
I use a Climber as my EDC urban carry. I have put plus scales on it now and it holds a pen and a needle and a mini screwdriver for my glasses. I have also put a 12mm outer diameter bearing in the scales to use when bow drilling. Saves the blisters. See Felix Immler for that video. Like you, I also have a Farmer......it’s more minimalistic, but stronger and more durable for when out in the woods. Enjoyed your video and tips. I personally find the back edge of the saw best for getting a spark with the ferro rod. The reamer is super.....much better than my workshop awl. Also, my girlfriend has the Pioneer 7.....The Farmer less the tin opener but has a bill hook for pruning. That blade is super razor sharp. The downside is that it’s nearly double the price of the Farmer.
Hey Nigel your EDC sounds ace!! Well pimped it up. The bow drill holder in the scales is a great idea man. Thanks for commenting on my vid mate, I’m glad you found it entertaining. And hold up... you have a girlfriend who also has a SAS?! SHES.A.KEEPER 😉

Sweet video, really keen on getting this knife, with the addition of scissors (Farmer X)! Have you seen those Firefly ferro rods (and tinder for the corkskrew) from Tortoisegear that you replace a SAK toothpick with!! Makes me very indecisive about getting the Farmer in alox even though I LOVE the sturdiness and good looks (plus people say it is better in the hand).
Thanks make glad you enjoyed it. The knife is a quality tool I use it all the time you won’t regret it 😊. I’ve not heard of the firefly but I’ll check it out. I usually have a ferro rod on me anyway but always love a new purchase 😆
This was an awesome demo and review! Just curious, after using the awl as your ferro rod striker all this time, have you ever needed to re sharpen it? Thanks!
Back when this was uploaded they were still only £23 on Amazon, weirdly a few pence cheaper than the Pioneer, which is the same, just minus a saw. Now the price has gone up to £35 for the Farmer and £30 for the Pioneer. Glad I bought my Farmer when I did! Still it's worth £35 too.
Brilliant! Thanks for the vid. Haven't read through all the comments, so don't shout at me for asking the possibly obvious :) How do you sharpen the reamer and the saw blade? Might as well ask this too: which tool do you use to sharpen the main blade? Keep the vids coming btw, mate! very enjoyable
Hey man, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment it’s not an obvious question. And honestly I don’t know lol 😂 I guess you could use a diamond rod to sharpen the saw teeth. But I’m not sure about the reamer 🤷🏼♂️ I’m sure someone will know. Theres probably a video on RUclips somewhere. Cheers for the nice words mate. Glad you enjoyed it 💪
I believe the bark would have worked great if you shredded it a bit more finer birds nest and blew into it to give it more oxygen, ordered a sak farmer, should be in tomorrow.
I think you’re right Jim. I rewatched the video a few days back (sad I know) and did think that it was close and a bit more prep, perhaps with an ember in the birds next and it would take. I’ll try it next time. I hope you enjoy your new purchase mate. I love mine 😊 cheer for watching and commenting pal
Honestly mate I’m not sure. I wouldn’t just be carrying it around though. I always store it in a bag until I’m in the woods. If I was ever stopped I have a purpose for it so should be ok. Same with my larger bushcraft knife and axe
The bark you were having trouble lighting I wonder if it had to much moisture in it ? You might consider collecting some and drying it out or adding some pine sap to it. By the way alcohol based hand sanitizer will remove pine sap or tar from the metal parts of your knife, not sure what it does to plastic handles Though
Thanks for the comments. That’s some good tips! 😊 I managed to get the little bit I had off with a baby wipe 🤣 I did think if I added some birch bark to that tinder it would probably catch 👍
