I Tried the World's WORST Food (Surströmming Challenge)

- Swedish Surströmming is ILLEGAL to open indoors or in public spaces. It's expected for you to ask permission from your neighbors even when opening it outdoors! It's even banned by airlines in fear it would explode at altitude... So now I'm going to put the smell to the ultimate test, the TASTE test!
Besides the terrible flavor, it was an amazing opportunity to visit a traditional Swedish Surströmming factory and see how the locals really eat it instead of only eating it straight out of the can!

As much as anyone can want to see someone else get sick to the point of vomiting, thank you for the education about this interesting cuisine. Can you do a video on Durian? 😂
Durian smells and tastes like vomit. The end.😆
surströmming: *exist *
durian: finally a worthy opponent, our battle will be legendary
I don't even eat/like durian, but durian is nothing compared to surströmming
It's not even close, rotten shark is even worthy to surströmming
I just kept thinking that Thomas can't wear a Seek Discomfort shirt and chicken out
*Never forget: Tradition is just peer pressure from dead people!* 😂
I loved hearing Thomas explaining why he doesn't eat it, because... same!!
I'm predominantly Swedish (with some surprise Norwegian in there too, thanks Ancestry!) and was very involved with the Scandinavian Studies faculty in my university. Every year, they would serve surströmming at our Julfest and when asked why I wouldn't even try it, I explained that this was something they likely ate out of necessity, not because it was their first choice hahaha.
I did, however, inherit the love of pickled everything and open-faced sandwiches with cold shrimp.
Skål!
Same with Norwegian rakfisk, lutfisk and gravlaks. Who the heck needs to eat rotten fish or fish digged down in the dirt for days in modern times?!
@@ChocolateMilk.. because it's delicious
Surströmming needs to be one of the foods on the spill your guts or fill your guts segment with James Corden
WELCOME TO SWEDEN AND OUR SURSTRÖMMING 😂
The stranger at 1:13 😂😂😂😅
That place is so beautiful. Id eat a can of that stuff just to be able to be there. And then I'd eat another can just to hang out with Lexi lol 😆 Thomas is a lucky man.
Honestly this channel deserves much more subscribers, your content is amazing
Lexie has found her limit... 😅 tho i respect your courage! 😄
This video reminded me of "The Simple Life" with Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie doing farm jobs and feeling uncomfortable most of the time with it. It looks just the same with Lexie touring all the surstromming process and then eating it feeling super unfamiliar lmaooo
"We have to eat outside over the water to give people a place to vomit..." I've had some gross stuff in my day, but fermented fish and the maggot cheese from Italy are just off my list, no interest in trying and don't care what anyone thinks.
I’m glad you liked it ;)
// Axel, from Borkbo
Surströmming stinks, no doubt. After all, they are fish filets fermented in salty water. But the taste is sweeter than one can expect, and with proper side-dishes (potatoes, onions, garlic, butter, sauce mayonnaise, etc.) it's a joy to have.
I was curious about it, and received many warnings from my girlfriend and friends. All Swedes, but not all fans of their own surströmmings. They were kind of surprised to see me react like a local having it for the first time : let's try, then we'll see. And it was just as expected : impossible to bear when opening the can (the neighbours had to be informed !), mandatory protection with a thick rag to avoid the oozing liquid... then so tasteful after letting things settle for a good 15 minutes.
I event bought many cans to bring back to France, and my whole family (skeptical too) just enjoyed it the same way I did.
You have been to China and Singapore (so did I), and I can testify some asian foods and dishes are WAY way worst than surströmmings. Don't you think ?
Great video, as always. You are such a pleasure to listen to, to go along with, to watch. In my current times, you are a sunbeam !
I would be nervous too!! He was even honest and said it isn't good alone. Putting this on the list with stinky tofu!!
I'm up for tasting different and interesting foods but this looked SO intense 😮
Hilarious! Welcome to Sweden 😁 But it's not illegal to open surströmming indoors or in public spaces though..
As long as you open the can under water when indoors.
I'm glad smell-ivision doesn't exist yet by the looks of this lol
Hahahahaha you are wounderfull and so polite so you even hold the puke in of respect.. you are a strong woman.
👍💪💪 from another Swede
As said, Surströmming really just tastes a bit salty, it tastes nothing like it smells. The taste is quite similar to Crayfish.
But the smell is like a public bathroom where nobody has flushed the toilet for a month.
However, you may experince a burn when you go to the bathroom the morning after.
Traditionally milk is had with it, it takes away some of the saltiness, but nowadays it's usually beer and brännvin/vodka.
I've had a number of parties eating surströmming, but the main thing there was to see how people who'd never tried it reacted.
I have a friend who eats it on a weekly basis and consider it a delecacy, but for me it's OK, could taste a bit more fishy and less salty, but no problems.
I've never heard of surströmming until this video. I feel like it is one of those things which I probably would not enjoy but absolutely have to try. The same goes with durian as I would love to try that sometime too. I give you a lot of credit for trying it despite not liking seafood!
Smoked salmon is way better smelling, than surströmming.
ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS !!! Please send a can to Gordon Ramsay at Hell's Kitchen.........................
Hi Lexie,
The videos which you make are amazing and the content is absolutely superb. I wish you to keep doing this. And even excited to read your book...
Lexie - Do reply.....
Ah, Borkbo - the Rolls-Royce of surströmming! ❤ Compared to any other make it has a very mild smell and it tastes fantastic!!! 😋
I'm loving your Europe Series , the southern France video was awesome too ,Please make a video about Japan Asap.
Lexie did so well! Just google people trying surströmming and you will find so many people not just almost vomiting, but actually doing it, over and over and over.
Although being Swedish I have never tried it either, but I plan to maybe this year in an effort to seek discomfort!
Anyway, great video, so nice to see someone trying it properly with all the condiments and not just huge chunks straight out of the can.
First time i see people having a meal like they were being tormented. How did you bear that iiiiwww
Oh man that looks ROUGH. Very brave of you to make this video haha.
its no big deal..this fish its very tasty, but quite salty..we try 2 days ago
Great video and awesome back story on the history of this tradition! Thank you!
Glad to see your channel notification, finally a video after 2 weeks !! - sincerely admirer of your blogs
That guy is a legend! I'm impressed that you didn't just stop after the first bite. Mind over matter!

Very gorgeous, I am falling in love with all those snaps of you. Wow, your video is so amazing mate. Your shots is truly irresistible.
Such a wonderful video! Proud to be part of the Limitless army!!
Really funny video Lexie, it’s worse than durian?
That's a shock!!! I like salmon, trout, flounder!!! That notwithstanding, it's a great video, and I can't wait for the next one!🤯👍❤
I love your videos 😍
People way back then probably smelt like surstromming so the smell wouldn't have bothered them lol
We were in Iceland this summer and tried the fermented shark there. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be…..
RIP Lex😂
Yummy, yummy! Sooo good. 👍😁🇸🇪 Jag blir avundsjuk.
Why do I want to try this now?? Lmao loved this vid Lexie!!
6:06 Ryan Gosling's twin brother ...
You need an entire HAZMAT Suit in there! :-O
Finally a video is here
it is so so god it test like danish chese
Ouch hahaha this is crazy lol. Have you tried Khasi Tung Rymbai (Fermented beans) ? Most people said it smells like poop, I love it though haha
Lexie, kudos, serious kudos for jumping into this despite knowing what was coming. Maybe, though, maybe just avoid the fish stuff from now on ROFL
And kudos to Thomas, too. Epic.
Wait till u try the Lao version
Pa Dak
I thought you were very brave. And you did give it an honest go.
The first time I ever tried it I think I was 14 years old. I don’t know why but I guess I just got it right away, and have loved eating it ever since! Props for trying!
I tried durian (even made a video about it) and I think I had the same expression on my face like you 😂
Girl!!! Please don't torture yourself like tha
14:51 the video actually starts
😆 your videos are great
I like fried and baked fish but I will not try raw straight out of the cand
Good effort... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Surströmning was 3000 years old possibly more. Ancient Romes certain towns forbade this food because whole town smell so bad. You saw tv entertainment series where this story is made. Sorry we do not make that lacric acid invention. It is much olde.
Scandinavia is beautiful !
Next surstromming challenge part 2 pliase
I’ve lived in Asia for many years now and have travelled lots as well. I try to eat as much new food and local as I can. Honestly I’d say durian and pig brain are the worst things I’ve ever had. Have you ever tried durian? In China they put it on pizza!!
I'm impressed when foreigner trying to eat durian because even I'm from south east Asia I never wants to try that smelly fruit 🤢 I must say you're so brave! 😁
You are way braver than me and I'm stupid in the brave department! 😘
I am the first one here.was waiting for this video
Me as a swed can confidently say that most of sweds dont like surströmming
Braver than most because I've seen people smell it and not attempt it lol
Is anyone going to talk about justin Bieber being their Guide
God bless you and your family
I can imagine how foreign workers look at he Surströmming factory on the first day.
Thats not true. Its not illegal. It’s just fish that some
Of us crazy Swedes likes.
You could have mixed that Surstromming with something else? Or as you took a bite of the Surstromming you could have taken a shot of Coca-Cola, Pepsi, or 7up? Something to trick your mind just for a second just enough time for you to swallow?
Can’t open it indoors can’t open it outdoors, where do I need to be in order to open it?
You can open it everywhere you want. There´s no law against opening cans of Surströmming.
I have been opening them inside my apartment several times, with a window open. Never ever have I got any complaints.
The description of the smell is exaggerated to make more entertaining RUclips-videos.
Surströmming is NOT a culinary pillar of Swedish cuisine!!! Hårdbröd is.😸☮Mostly elderly ppl like Surströmming, not so much the younger and I have a feeling it'll fizzle out in time. Phiew.
What a shame.
Feeling sad for the fish
oh no
Most fermented food is foul smelling. But some are good even though they smell bad, like pickles.
Eat mild fermented fish 🐠
Throw up in a can
Seal the can
Now it’s strong
Give it to you friends
Repeat the procedure.
U r the sweetest one I have ever seen 💜
It's def up there with Dorian, but Casu Marzu seems worse.
I could literally see the pain in her eyes
Surströmming or Durian or Stinky Tofu or Fermented Icelandic Shark
Lexie has found her limit :) jk, though you could try pinching your nose or otherwise not breathing through it so you can’t smell the fish.
Love from india always
Very tasty isnt..little too salty, but good ...ok when you open the can its smells really bad, like someone farted lol...but if you eat in the right way...like i say-no big deal...we try it 2 days ago..btw, i recorded too..greetings from Slovenija!
So interesting
Try the Icelandic version, Hákarl, fermented Greenland shark. Smells like urine mixed with ammonia. Tastes OK though.
Yes
More torture
Lol 😂😂🤣
Välkommen till sverige
Shidol on steroids.
Any bong here
Never ever seen anyone eat surströmming in Sweden. Why would they?
Har inte heller sett det
Only every summer for my entire life...
😂😂😂
At least they had a nice view...
das sieht nach einen tollen Angelplatz aus ob es so ist ist eine andere Frage
I love you❤Lexie
You may try puke fruit ...😂
Comment for the algorithm
This is a big NO!!!!! Have not tried it, but I gagged every time I even tried to get near it, even puked. Why try to eat something that will make you puke before sitting down to the table. One time at a student corridor I was unable to pass outside a student room where they ate this. Had to go back and find another way in. I just say why? And I'm a swede.
Sigh. it is NOT illegal to open it indoors.
