    I will add two more to the list:
    1) "Aww you're too young to be disabled." It can happen at any point for any reason.
    2) "You can walk just like the rest of us." No, that's why I use my wheelchair/cane/whatever else I need.

      We need to politely but firmly ask them if they’d like being grabbed without warning; as a wheelchair is an extension of us, what they’re doing is essentially assault. This is also why I got foldable handles for mine!

    I think that people say we are faking, because they have no concept of what it is like to be disabled.
    It is good that they don’t know what it feels like, but they also need to take our word about how our disabilities affect us.

    • @mickmash13
      @mickmash13 2 месяца назад +15

      I think it also comes from the fact that a lot of people have a stereotype or very specific idea of what a disability may look like. Eg: all blind people have 0% vision, all people in a wheelchair are paraplegic & can't walk at all, etc.
      Most people don't understand that disabilities exist on a spectrum & that 2 people with the same disability can have very different experiences based on the extent of their disability.
      And don't even get me started on the lack of awareness around invisible disabilities. I've had several instances of people telling me I can't use an accommodation I need because I don't look disabled or I'm too young to have a disability.

    • @ixykix
      @ixykix 2 месяца назад +13

    • @SamirCCat
      @SamirCCat 2 месяца назад +9

      The worst is when they BELIEVE they know what it's like, because they've had an experience that in THEIR mind is the same as our disability.
      I once talked with a girl about not being kind to oneself and pressuring yourself too much, and she said she knew exactly what I was talking about. She was healthy, had never been diagnosed with anything or missed school. She talked about studying too hard. However, I talked about my severe anorexia that led me to being sectioned to psychiatric hospital care over and over again, and how I almost died and was nowhere near being able to go to school for 6 years.
      Um, no. We were NOT talking about the same thing. She did NOT know what it was like for me. I just stopped seeing her after that.
      I often feel it's a culture clash to socialise with healthy people. I feel like I come from a completely different land and life than people who can work, study, have partners and kids. I can hardly take care of myself and my cat. My successful is being able to wash my hair twice a week, or going an entire day without anxiety. Not being depressed for three days in a row.
      When you live with chronic illnesses you feel like an alien around healthy people. Around other disabled people and spoonies, no matter if it's physical or mental, I feel like I can be myself.

      @@SamirCCat yea, she should’ve said something like “I agree with the not being kind to yourself part, I’ve had experiences like that before, but I can’t compare it to yours, as yours is far too different from mine” then that way, she is not invalidating your experience by acting like studying was just as bad as what you went through and instead realizing that they are not the same thing as yours had different consequences than hers, while still addressing that studying can be hard on people.

They say I get 'free' money but I think I'd rather be working than have to suffer constant pain, tiredness (for no reason), stress and anxiety. The money I receive is to help with daily tasks, like cleaning, travel, getting dressed, eating, hygiene. I have to pay someone to help clean my house as I am no longer able to get down on the floor or scrub surfaces hard to clean them. I ask people how they would feel if they couldn't reach a spot on their body that needs to be cleaned and how embarrassing it is to acknowledge this to people.

    I personally perceive the prayer thing a little bit diffrent than you. I'm Christian, but had once had a Muslim friend on the internet. One day he asked how I've been, I told him that I've been good, but then he asked about my family, something like 'Is your family okay\healthy', and I told him that my grandma had just been diagnosed with cancer. He told me he was gonna pray for her - to a god, that I, obviously, don't and didn't believe in. I felt a little bit awkward because I didn't know exactly how to respond, but I didn't perceive it as something negative or troublesome at all. I ended up saying 'Thanks for your concern' - because I didn't believe his prayer would do anything, but I was grateful for his good intentions. Of course, that was different than coming up to a stranger, *touching them* and praying for them aloud - that, I think, would be uncomfortable for most believers, let alone atheists\agnostics\people of a a different religion than the praying one. Doing such a thing without consent is super weird and wrong. However I think there's nothing wrong in just saying that you'll pray for someone or just praying for them silently. I think that people who don't hate religion or have religious trauma won't have a problem with something that they see as ineffective but costs them nothing. I think if someone says that they'll pray for you while you're an atheist or don't believe what they believe, it's best to see their words as a sign of kind thoughts and general 'good energy' being sent to you (not necessarily like in some Wicca\New Age stuff, more like just some good vibes and care).

    5:47 The prayer thing can be annoying. I had it happen to me 5 times in 2019. Since I was early for work, I went to the park nearby and had bible thumpers come to me saying they ''were sent'' to help me, and then do a long random ramble of sorts with prayers and goodness knows what else. It was damn awkward.

    I sustained a bad knee injury a few months ago which has resulted in stiffness and can be painful when I walk, climb steps or turn. I'm due to go on holiday soon which will involve a short flight. I have just purchased a collapsible walking stick, which I think will be useful for me. I'm in two minds about using it, as I don't want to draw attention to myself (I deliberately picked a stick in a plain, dark colour), but I'm too scared to go without one either. 😕

      use one, most people are nice, ive recently started using a mobility aid ((single crutch)) too and i had your concerns too!!! so i got some things to help reassure you ((hope it works)) !!!
      -most people are nice about it, the rude people are very much the minority.
      -mobility aids are the most freeing thing in the world, youll be able to so much more !!! its amazing trust me its WORTH IT !!!
      -Youll be able to do things like getting accomadation without fear of judgement.
      -If you have a limp (or other more visible symptom, eg slow af walking) think about it like this; youll A, be judged and have to suffer through the pain in silence, Or B be judged and have a nicer time walking.
      -((In my experience)) mobility aids are great, they reduce exhaustion, pain, and limp ((if u have one)), whilst drastically increasing speed !!!
      -mobility aids ((and other visable dissabilites)) really let you see whats inside a person, how they are like, and by consequence; who to avoid... i put most people in 4 major camps; Unknown, kind, judgemental bitches, and saviour complex... in my experience 90% of people are in the unknown and or kind camps, the other two are the vast minority ... the other two more happens to me when im at school, in public these type of people are much rarer...
      - One of the best things (imo); it boosts your confidence BY SO MUCH !!! who knew that not stumbling and limping around everywhere would do this !!! when i use my mobility aid i feel like im top of the world lmfao.
      - I cant stress this enough mobility aids are so freeing !!!
      If you wish to get used to it and built up confidence step by step ((pun intended)) is to practice at home, then tiny walks around the neighbourhood, then parks and finally more busy locations ... i find the most nerve racking is your frequent locations like school and or work...

    One of the great things I love about the U.S is that there's more access for disabled people than in other countries. All public places have ramps or drops in the pavement surrounding the building. If there are stairs an elevator is available. All these are because of the American Disabilities Act. I hope other countries will put something like that in place in the future.

    I disagree with the prayer one. If the person is a believer and has actively asked for prayer, that's great. You do you. But it is dehumanising and disrespectful to approach complete strangers and offer to pray for them. It just gives the message that they aren't 'good enough' as they are and also that the only thing of interest is their disability. It is actually making the prayer person the centre of attention, making them feel good about themselves. It's crass, rude, degrading and ignorant.
