This is why I love and enjoy learning languages (though I still have a long way to go). It just opens up a whole new world to cultures and all, and also helps me understand why some groups of people behave or say things they do.
I can relate to almost every 'very british problem' that you mentioned. I'm from Argentina and I thought it was only me, being awkward and weird hahaha. I suppose is quite universal, I mean, a certain percentage of people being born this way, me included, and the culture and upbringing playing its part in making it better or worse. Thank you so much! It was fun!
Hello from Ukraine and thanx a lot for your podcast, Luke! Somehow it turned out that I've answered all the tweet-questions as the native English. I hope it is a good sign and my English learning will be successful )))
How interesting and useful to get to know the Brits better. You're both charming. Luke, your questions are clever and to the point. Thank you for inviting Michael. 🎉
I listened to the podcast version before. And I've just re-listened to this episode here. And I know it felt better to listen while watching. I enjoyed it more. Or maybe because it's the second time I listened to it I understand it more. I laughed so much for a part of the British tweet. Thx Luke.
Great episode! Loved the tweets! It's so good to see I'm not alone! I am from Austria and know almost all of these situations. I always say the same thing in the taxi! I also always feel strange when I leave a shop and haven't bought anything. And I get high blood pressure from unknown calls. :D
Standing face to face in front of a class of students Is another awkward Situation. I remembered what my teacher Said: smile...always smile. You are both beautiful human beings! I had learnt a Lot! Thanks and good luck!
it's normal be awkward, but no so much like English people! your videos are the best, you have a gift to communicate how your language goes...I feel more confy in English since I listen to you, thanks a lot
I can't believe that Luke and Michael are together in this video. At first I only have been listening to Michael's podcasts and i just have discovered Luke's English podcast. Listening their podcasts and also their accents is very enjoyable.❤️
Hello. Truly I have he a good luck when I was a beginner in french. Every time I tried to say something and I said incorrectly there was a smart girl that she understands almost all my mistakes and she always explained me She tells me thé correct way. I never forget this girl. I always said thanks Christine from Belgium.
Thank you for the great podcast and the topic ❗ It made my day 😊 So many familiar situations have been arisen. I'm not British, but as I see, feeling awkward in some circumstances is a universal trait
39:00 I'm Italian and I always feel like a criminal every time I pass trough the nothing to declare gate...so no, it's not just a British thing! The tweet is very accurate 😅
Hello Luke , This was great episode to watch 🤩. Regarding to self-consciousness that you mentioned in minute 31:49 , I trust that the vast majority of people in my community don’t have which is annoying sometimes . In my opinion it is advantageous thing and I will try to be more conscious of myself because I believe this kind of thing manifest one good manners .
wow, I would have never imagined you feel award. I've always admired your calm way of speaking and communicating. You're super clear and precise when you teach. ❤
Hello, Luke! I love your superb and excellent podcast! Thank you so much for your incredible work! You are the best English teacher in the universe! Have an excellent day!
Wow, what lovely guys you are! My responses were exactly the same! Nothing to declare, zebra crossing, and so on. The feeling of not wanting to disturb anyone at any time is always with me. I'm happy that I'm not alone with that. Love from Poland.
Thank you for this funny podcast. I feel great relief because I have realised that I am not the only person in the world who feels awkward in this situations😅
I like it when you talked about the effective filter, I am a big fan of Stephen Krashen, his five hypotheses make sense to me. Drinking a cup of beer helps lower one's anxiety level when comes to learning a new language.
I came to your podcast from Mr.Keith RUclips channel after I watched your interview. Firstly, your work is really admirable, you do a lot of effort to make it so special and distinguish. Secondly, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart and sorry for being most the time like the Ninja but I ensure to put like which is actually love to your all podcast.
Thank you s much, Luke. I have learned a lot from you. Regarding the situation you have mentioned. I act in the same way. And I am egyptian. I think it is universal attitude. Best of luck
Great video Luke! I feel the same way when leaving a store if I didn't buy anything, as Michael said: “look casual, look like you're not stealing something” 😅 and if I enter the place with a bag I have to tell the employees that it is mine so they don't think I put something inside it before leaving. I'm from Argentina and this is not a common feature of people from my country but whenever I'm near some kind of authority, be it the police, a teacher, etc, I feel the need to be accepted by them as a proof that I've followed the rules and that I'm an ethical and well-behaved person, but it's just my personality
I listened this video by accident this morning, your experience in the process of learning a foreign language really reminds me of the numerous difficulties and embarrassing moments I had faced while on the road towards English learning. Be that as it may, I still have struggles and confusions on how to pronounce in a British way or how to speak British English for foreigners like me while also in America, especially when working or studying together, Americans always talk super loud voice, which will make my British pronunciation influenced by American accents. Another thing I find that when foreigners like us speak British English, Americans often couldn't understand that, even when the speaker standing right in front of them, Americans tend to ask you again in loud voice, make me feel like there is a mountain between us. How to let Americans understand our British way but also not influenced by their American accents.
I enjoyed listening to this episode, and I think the social awkward is a global thing but still u british people take it a little bit to the extreme 😅 thank u Luke.
You are the best the best best i listen to your podcast every day and i hope it helps me throughout my journey to move to uk as a doctor. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
😁😁😁this was such a good laugh 😆! Thanks Luke and big thanks to your wonderful guest Michael👍❤️! You brightened up my day ☀️😊 When you read that Green corridor tweet, I was like yes, my feelings exactly😂! And yes, to a taxi driver I always say exactly that “Anywhere here is fine, thanks“😉 Also, I start making rustling sounds and micro-movements on a bus before I have to disturb🙃 I sure feel relieved after having shown my ticket to the ticket inspector😆 So yes, I suppose these are universal things. Kind regards from Almaty, Kazakhstan 🇰🇿
😂😂😂it has always been extremely funny to hear our teacher Luke to share his experiences 😂😂😂the poor Japanese guy working in the bank who just disappeared without saying a word so quickly 😂😂😂if I were him at least I would make an excuse to leave however terribly uncomfortable.the scene may also have been unforgettable for him😅I hope he is well❤best wishes to him❤
When I enter into a shop with no intention to buy anything,I would try to avoid an eye contact with the shop assistant, once I decide to leave ,I will try to pass by the shop assistant if possible with a slower pace, hands away from any part of my body 😂😂😂 Luke was so exaggerating but it’s true 😅😅😅
The situation of skateboard made me laughing as I thought I am only the one who's feeling and thinking that stuff, also I don't know what I do when I wear a sweatshirt or whatever without pockets or when I don't catch my phone in my hand, I don't know what should I do with my hands, and these tiny things are big problems for me actually. 😂💔💔 Enjoying the podcast.. thanks Luke and Michael very much.
Hi Im from Poland And exactly have the same as you. situation at the airport when you try to Look normal not like a drug smuggler or someone like that 🤣 even though I have nothing which is not illegal 🤣 great episod guys :) a lot of fun and a lot of learning😁
As to the airport situation, I would have felt in exactly the same way as Michael! And I’m not British. I completely agree with you, Luke. It seems to be human nature…airports always bring me stress even if I have never smuggled anything! 😂😂😂 Thanks for another great podcast! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I suppose most of the problems are related to me as a Thai people, except for the strange numbers calling. I work as a doctor, so they are often important calls for consulting that I should answer.
Regards to Twitter quiz, we have the same weird customs in the Russia. Also, about a paying with debet card like Visa. Usually in a little shop paying process has a little delay after reafig the card, and we patiently waiting confirmation of our purchase, trying to hold pokerface and polite smile))) Thanks for the video, it was very funny and lovely.
When I walk through "Nothing to declare" I don't feel anything, really. But when Russian police officers are around or traffic wardens, I feel like I've done something wrong and they are gonna get me now.
I can't believe listen to your podcast twice at 6am when I on my way to go to work, the topic is really fun and the second one, I tried to catch what I missed #mypoorenglish wkwk

Me in Uk I had an awkward moment. I was in charge of the breakfast in Whatley Manor. One customer ask me, can I have an over easy egg? I did not know what was that. First I said yes but I did not understand. I moved in the kitchen and asked the chef. He told me it's an egg 3 minutes on one side and 3 minutes on the other side. Alright now I know.

Good luck
I suppose most of the problems are related to me as a Thai people, except for the strange numbers calling. I work as a doctor, so they are often important calls for consulting that I should answer.

Thought I am 2 years late watching this beautiful conversation ,I think these kind of feelings are human behaviour not British things….
*though
*not exclusively British things
Very interesting conversation!
In all situation that you have been talking about i would be answered the same.
From Russia
I did at least 90% what mentioned in the podcast except "I think it's the right amount" coz feel like asking ppl not to count, trust problem.
Yes I will say something like don’t mind the mess as I can imagine my friends are usually a lot tidier than me!
I don't know if it's due to the fact that I am French but I never felt awkward 🤭. I tell exactly to the taxi driver where my door is. I do not hesitate to tell the person in the aisle row that I am leaving the train now so that they need to stand up.
It depends on the personality of the person to be awkward sometimes means that the personne doesn't have confidence on himself .
Amazing😀
Hey Luke, where can I buy a mag with your logo? Like the one on the bookshelf behind you
