  • Auburn Timber moving thier Washington 217D Slackline Yarder up through a series of switchbacks to the top of a mountain on Vancouver Island, B.C. The terrain was far to steep for the machine to navigate on its own power alone, so a very large HD-31 crawler (112,000 lbs) was used to pull while a Clark 880 skidder to push. In several places the machine had to be lifted with the jacks on greased plywood and pushed or pulled sideways. The cameraman was needed to help with this duty so no video was recorded. REMEMBER- the camera never does the terrain justice. This was step, steep ground!
Total horsepower between the 3 machines was roughly 1500 HP.
Narration was by one of the landing men, not me- I wasn't there.
Our plan is to record a 'narration interview' with Mike (the co-owner, running the dozer here in this video) so he can describe what's going on and why. They did make it to the mountaintop, rigged up and went logging, but this is the only surviving video of this job.
The yarder was moved off the mountain (snubbed off of course) and the water from the truck brakes had frozen on the road in places, making a nerve-racking ride back down the mountain!

That was U P and no 2 ways about it. And F/a or A/C equipment is never for a loss for power. FINE video. There are roads like that here but not nearly as long in the steep place or long totally either. Thanks! This one is A-PLUS!

Timber and oil, pretty much make the rest happen, but computers and bird brains can minimize and maximize anything. People seem to think food is the problem, then live on the phones and in thier cars.☺🤠🌾🤯☺🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔ICCT, (IF Chickens Cud Talk. )☺🦧🏕🎻🦤☺

Thanks for that vivid reminder that there are only two easy things in loggin'- gettin hurt or killed.

One of the most unique logging videos, especially for B.C. the Fiat Allis would have been an unusual sight in the bush, the yarder definitely in a league of its own here, and that skidder is also an odd one, biggest line skidder available.Would love a peek around the last corner their to see whats swinging that pierce grapple. Is this your video and narration?

Is there a video of getting that big rig off that hill? That would be a ride I wouldn’t care to take. Back in the days when having balls was a good thing.

Why at the end of the video was there a grapple yarder at the landing? Was the Washington replacing the grapple yarder or just passing by to go to another landing? Thanks for the great video.

I think you should check machine weights they should be 35 thousand as to 35 tons same with harder and cat. I ran 158 and 208 and they weighed about 30 ton not 100 as you stated

208 fully loaded with tube and all lines is 214,000 lbs and change. That was with 1-/8" wire rope for skyline, 1" for mainline and a 7/8" haulback. IIRC we used shackled extensions at around 2k feet so lets say 2200' of sky & mainline and 4400' of haulback. 8 guylines, 1-1/8" at a couple hundred foot per. My old Rigging Slinger ass says lines alone is 20k lbs. My boss back then would have loved if you worked as a Weighmaster Mr. Hammond, as paying PUC on 214k lbs was spendy come time to move.
Great video and truly adverse pull.
