Don, I should also add, Victorian houses were designed with high ceilings to give I believe, the illusion of more space & a nice & generous living area. Actually, even within smaller terraced properties, the high ceilings were an integral part of the architecture. The varied interior decor, such as the style of wall and ceiling mouldings, was directly related to the status of the house & one could even add, it's owner. I'd also say, the more ornate the designs/mouldings abound, meant that the home was grander & spoke volumes to those witnessing it's overall design, intricacy & even beauty. Also, the high ceilings would have helped to control the external temperatures, specifically during the heat of the Summer months. Hot air rises, hence keeping the home somewhat cooler.
Hi Don, enjoyed your video of Stoneybatter. Just returned to NJ from a 10 day tour of parts of Ireland, starting in Dublin. Enjoyed your beautiful country and all the lovely people I had the good fortune to meet & chat with. Watched a bunch of your videos before my visit, and enjoy them tremendously.
