Amazing visuals man, looked like a lot of fun. Been a couple years since I finished off the NH 48, so seeing Waumbek and Cabot brought back fond memories! Thanks for posting.
Yeah it was a fun trip. I had hoped to finish my third round of the NH48 this year but I've still got five to go. Now it's time to turn my attention to the winter 48. Thanks for watching!
Single day traversers. Lol! It's getting to be that time of winter magic. Super cool for you guys. You look so damn cozy in your hammock too. Beautiful scenes as always.
Seth, That was a fun trip, thanks for taking us along! I'll bet the snow is only going to get worse and it won't be long before you'll be snowshoeing that Whites.
Yeah based on a very recent trip report I was expect just a dusting on the trails. But that's what happens when you assume. The Weeks don't get much traffic and they hold onto what snow they had already received. Ironically if there had been more snow it would have made my footwear choice easier. Next time I'm up there it'll be time for all the winter gear for sure!
Thanks Layne. It's nice that pretty much as soon as all the leaves drop up there, the ground has a nice layer of snow above the crunchy leaves. A few more weeks and you won't see any leaves at all on the ground up there I bet.
That looked like some great hiking. The views were beautiful at many points along the way. The camping looked cold! I thought the Devil's Hopyard was particularly neat; very interesting and unusual. Wonderful video!
What an incredible video! Stunning scenery, excellent footage and editing and the perfect background music. I subscribed and am looking forward to more of your adventures in those beautiful White Mountains.
Thank you! The drone shots were tough - it was very sunny. Starr King and the Horn were particularly tough as the sun was still low in the sky and very bright. I did my best!
In the backyard of our place in NH! Love this entire area and this hike. We're actually the trail maintainers for the section from Roger's Ledge to South Pond.
Very nice video Seth. Looks like a couple of fun days out on the trail with varying types of weather. Amazing drone footage and nice to see some white stuff! Sealskinz makes a nice waterproof sock that can be used with trail runners...but yeah for this one I bet you wish you took the boots. That Devil's Hop Yard looked like a sketchy place when wet!
I realized my problem too late - I don't have a pair of transitional boots so it was either the trail shoes or my winter boots. Based on recent trail/weather reports I had hoped the trails would be almost snow free but it didn't work out that way. I suppose the winter boots would have been the better choice but I think they would have sucked on Day 2 when the weather warmed. My feet would have been gross. Last year I was looking at those Quests that Pete was using. They were sold out at the time but I need to see if I can snag me a pair.
@@RhodySeth I have a pair of those boots...they are a good boot...a bit narrow for my foot but a solid choice if it fits right. I think REI's running there big sale of 20% off a regular price item now.
Well, well, well...nope wet and cold feet are not fun. Do like the looks of that first snow. Wow, those views...fantastic! The Bulge, the Horn, Unknown Pond, where do people come up with these names...😁 And out of the snow! Another great adventure! Bruce and Otis
There are definitely some funny names on that trail. Unknown Pond isn't that unknown anymore but I guess it was at one time! Thanks for watching Bruce (and Otis)
You've got some serious editing chops man! I love nothing more than finding a channel that will certainly grow and succeed. I want to hit the Whites someday. They are the badass backpacker mountains! Lol
Thanks Buckley, I appreciate that! Yeah the Whites will test you - so many rocks to contend with and with the heavy pack it's easy to misjudge how long it will take to cover the distance. Looking forward to more winter retreats this season!
Thankya sir. I do love it up there once the snow hits the ground. Looking forward to more winter camping this season as well as chipping away at my Winter NH48 list. Happy Thanksgiving!
Thank you sir, this was a fun adventure. I always plan to film more at the camp but once the cold sets in I go into survival mode and just want to get warm. Filming becomes an afterthought. I had a bunch of blunders including spilling my boiling water and gutting down a super cheesy soup I hated but by that point the camera wasn't coming out. Filming in the cold takes practice!
I was able to stretch my trail runners into colder weather with a 3 layer sock system. Injinji liners, darn tough crew and SuMade waterproof socks. They kept my feet warm on the very same day on the very same range! (wish we had bumped into each other!). I do have a pair of trail runners that are 1 size too big, which definitely helped with this system. The SuMades don't insulate extremely well when they are wet, and I might go for a lighter waterproof layer in the future. There's also breadbags for the budget options, that works very well in my experience. It's worth keeping a couple of plastic bags in your bag with your dry socks as an option. I think I can take this system down to 20 degrees relatively comfortably. Another trick is to keep your feet on your sit pad when you aren't moving. Most heat loss from the feet is from the bottom. You can also keep wool insoles and pop them in at camp. Yet another trick is to not tighten the laces as much as normal to keep good blood flow. If all else fails, sticking a warm bottle of water between your legs does a good job of warming the entire body up, including the feet.
Look at you! Tricks every which way! I'll definitely investigate this waterproof sock idea. Might be a good way to bridge the gap until true winter hiking.
Man, I am ALWAYS down for some hot well action. Starr-king / Waumbek is on the menu this winter for the slide back down. Hopefully you got the right cairns on this one. I keep eyeballing Kinsman south. If I can get up there before you get back to it, I can say I've climbed it as many times as Seth, which sounds amazing as long as we leave out the technicality. Sweet views and just enough snow to bring the magic, without needing to break out the super serious gear. Looked like a cold night, but those booties we're pretty spiffy. I've never gotten into trail runners, I think mostly because I hate squish squish feet. My preference has usually been a sturdy pair of waterproof trail shoes. Devils Hopyard was indeed pretty cool, loved all the mossyness.
Sorry to spoil your party but after getting feedback from various folks the verdict is that the northern knob of South Kinsman is in fact the actual summit so my hysterics were for naught. I'm back up to three ascents of the Kinsmans and I won't relinquish them again! Other than the shoe snafu this was a good test of my gear. I need to get a better tarp but otherwise I'm ready for some colder conditions. Hoping we at least get a cold front down here in Rhode Island so I can do another test.
@@RhodySeth well, congratulations on getting your 3 summits back then.... Maybe I can find a mountain around here you haven't climbed yet... I can use that for bragging rights instead... Hmm... 🤔

Thank you! So happy to get back to hiking in snow (even if it meant cold feet!) No snow down here in Rhode Island so I'm hoping I get back up to the mountains soon!
It's a great trail. Hiking up to Waumbek is a great choice when I'm looking to do something short to wrap up a White Mountain weekend. I did it back in April when the snow was receding and it was nice to get back as the snow returns.
Such a beautiful area. I love this time of year with the fresh snow makes the forest so pretty. I just saw your eye drop temperature for the first time on another channel. I am thinking of getting them as Christmas gifts for some hiker friends. Do you like it?
Yeah it's simple but works well. I think they're around 22 bucks and the battery seems to last a long time. It will tell you the high and low temp readings since you've turned it on which is nice.

I’ve been eyeballing this route as an overnight for a few months. This video just put it at the top of the list. Thanks for the great video!
Excellent, you will enjoy this route. It's a long drive if you are coming from the south but it's perfect for long stretches of solitude.
I live about 9 miles from Jefferson, and am going to do that hike south bound from Rt 110 to Jefferson this summer. Thank you for your posting this.
Man, jealous of where you live. You'll enjoy the hike, it's a remote and quiet trail.

That's right, winter is almost here! Maybe not so much here in Rhode Island but up north them trails will have snow and ice aplenty!

Thanks as always for watching. This was a fun day trip - always a learning experience sleeping in the woods.
Great views! Happy to see all worked out well despite the cold feet and damp shoes.
Yep, I picked up some waterproof boots which have already proven very useful. Thanks for watching!

Great job on this video! Loved it! Loved the way the drone shots are sprinkled in. And of course... the White Mountains! I hope to hike them someday.
