Funny!! I have been an RN since '96 and have truly come to appreciate males in our profession. Personally, I think the term "nurse" is outdated, yet all the other professional titles have been taken. The word Nurse insinuates a female and somewhat physical and intimate connection. How about "DA"/ doctor's assistant? DIAP? (Do It All Person). ...LOLP (License on line personnel?)....

This is so true. Society views male nurses as less of a man sometimes it seems. But in progressive states a male nurse is seen as the alpha and bread winner it’s so weird. So many male nurses would sleep around and impregnate the staff from techs to nurses it’s crazy. Worked with a guy who had 3 women pregnant around the same time at our job. Very odd nursing culture. But from my experience has been like yours, many women would hit on me at work too, and or flirt. Always ask you to help with the heavy lifting or psych patients. It’s weird but many patients behave like kids, they see a female and act up, but see a male walk in and start behaving. Lol

My father was an ED charge nurse. He garnered a lot of respect from his fellow nursing staff, doctors & the administrators. His patients loved him dearly. His bedside manner was impeccable & his fight against the reaper’s CONSTANT gaze-heroic.
I used to sit in the EMS waiting lounge and watch him work. He was amazing. It was a blessing to see him control the emergency room in the most chaotic situations. His calm demeanor in the heat of the moment seemed unreal. I watched him usher lives back to health, and escort souls to what comes next with compassion.

Before becoming an RN, I started as a CNA in long-term care. The residents (patients) are more picky about things because that is their home and their life. A few female residents would refuse to let me do certain care tasks with them. So I would go work with another resident while a female CNA did that task. I was expecting that to happen. But the thing that surprised me both in long-term care and acute care was that there were female patients who preferred to have a male nurse. There were patients who told me that male nurses take the time to listen to patient concerns and then take positive actions. Or some patients simply stated "Male nurses are more caring."

People saying "I'm not doing it for the money", that's a lie! Of course there are other reasons why someone becomes or wants to become a nurse, but the money aspect would be in the mix too. You want to be a nurse because you want to help and care for people, but you also want a job that will support yourself and your family financially. I don't care what anyone tells me because 99% of the people wouldn't become a nurse or any of these health professions if it didn't pay well to the point where it didn't financially support them. Come on now, let's not act like money isn't a factor in one's career.

When I was working as a tech in ms/tele/covid, I would witness many of those things happen to the male nurses. I have met so many girls while in school who chose nursing because of the salary (I’m from California btw) and while yes, I think that is very important to consider in a career field, it’s like you said, they get burnt out so quick and end up being so miserable that it starts to reflect on their patient care.

I've had some female nurses tell me some wild things about PACU and the recovery rooms. You mentioned you work in PACU. Female nurses have told me of a cute guy comes through post surgery, and is still unconscious under anesthesia that a bunch of female nurses will come through and lift up his gown and laugh gawk or mock him. How often does this occur? And is there an atmosphere if you do report them are you gonna be Black balled by female nurses? It does occur frequently and its sexual assault in my opinion to expose unconscious male patients like that just for laughs or just to sexually degrade them. It's sad cuz guys find out about what happens to them under anesthesia and they will just avoid or push off necessary medical treatment because they dont want to endure that embarrassment and will likely die earlier in life because of it. All because female nurses think its funny to degrade unconscious Male patients and nobody reports them. It's sad! REALLY sad!

As an Australian male nursing student currently on placement, I can strongly attest that a lot of what was said in the video is correct. Unfortunately, I have encountered several female nurses who are openly sexist toward men and can be very critical of men being in the profession. I've discovered there are several reasons for this, based on my experiences. One is that some female nurses have gone through a messy divorce and have come out the other side with a bitter and hostile attitude toward their ex, which they then extend toward men in general and male patients and male nurses in particular. Another is some female nurses are completely unprepared for what nursing care really involves, i.e., 16-hour double shifts, working weekends, graveyard shifts, etc. But above all else, there does seem to be a prevailing feminist attitude entrenched within the profession - particularly among generation-Z and the Millennials - that implies women are better nurses than men, which is clearly nonsense. I was once warned about this by a retired female nurse, who told me the biggest problem I would face while working in a hospital is not the patients or the health authority I would be working for, but the nurses themselves, who can be blatantly sexist. She also said there is a lot of back-stabbing, gossiping, and behind-the-scenes workplace bullying going on in nursing today, and I need to be prepared for it. Unfortunately, she was right.
However, as harrowing as all that sounds, I must emphasise the fact that the majority of female nurses are great; in fact, some of them I would walk on hot coals if they asked me to do it, such is the respect I have for them. Just be mindful of the realities in the nursing workforce today.

It's motivating to watch you speak on the topic of males in nursing as I'm applying to nursing school this month (deadline is March 5th) and will become an RN with interests in working ICU, ER, and maybe psych. Travel nursing seems like it could be a great avenue to go down for a few years as well. The ultimate goal is NP or CRNA; I will make that decision after a few years of experience as an RN, though. I'm making the switch to healthcare at age 34 after spending almost a decade in law enforcement (USAF, Sheriff's Department, and State Penitentiary). Keep the videos rolling in; I've subscribed!

So sometimes I have to scale back on smiling too much and engage less just so I wouldn’t be taken the wrong way cause I’m very serious about my career and being categorized based on how some female nurses may present themselves is annoying. I’ve never utilized anyone as a work husband or tried to tell a male nurse my business in hopes that he could solve my problems. It takes a real man to do bedside nursing. I would rather work with a whole unit of men Who are nurses than work with women who are nurses. A group of women under stress create a whole scenario of stress, anxiety, and female nurses are bullies. Not all nurses are bullies. I think the women who have been on the inpatient unit for many years, for whatever reason, Are mean and angry and they take it out on the younger staff members. One night I arrived at work and I realized I was the only female on the floor. I was absolutely delighted. They did not want to claw my eyes out. Women can be so petty. Give me a unit full of men, as they do not bring drama with them. To all of the women who are seasoned nurses, I know everybody isn’t a bully, the unit only needs one bully who is in charge and the night is miserable.

While I'm inclined to agree that I'd pick nursing over warehouse any day, I do feel the need to point out that shipments of goods can be packed, and subsequently broken down, in ergonomical ways. You can put things together in the most user friendly way, and the person who came before you probably did exactly that.
Patients can't really be broken down into easy to handle units. The weight distribution isn't ideal. They're awkward, and they have limbs that flop all over the place. Unlike boxes, they can get violent and kick, punch, and bite in the middle of transit, causing you to move in awkward ways to try to balance between moving the patient and protecting yourself. I'd wager that you've never had a 300lb box whose knees buckled on the way to the bathroom, leaving you to singlehandedly catch it and try to haul its ass back to bed. Or the dead weight 400lb stroke patient who you are trying to hold up with one hand because you need the other hand free to wipe their ass and place fresh linens. It's plenty physical, it's 12 hours long, and because of many factors (including the fact that it deals with life and death; hospital admins are bastards who will staff short in the name of profit; and nursing as a profession hasn't really embraced the union), those 12+ hours may be spent on your feet the entire time, without a single break.
We try to make things easier on ourselves with adjustable beds, slide boards and mechanical lifts, but at a certain point it comes down to the fact that humans aren't ideal objects to manhandle, and that's just the way it is.
Contrast with working in a warehouse where your duty is always to move heavy objects... but you have a lot more control over it. Things are packed into pallets that can be moved with forklifts and pallet jacks. You can practice good mechanics because the goods you are moving were packed into boxes that were designed to be carried by a person.
Anecdotally I've know quite a few people who switched from stereotypically physical careers (welding, construction) into nursing who say that they severely underestimated how much it would make their backs hurt.

Wait until you start working in a jail/prison and you are a male nurse. Since the typical stereotypes are men are doctors and females are nurses, here you are a male nurse (murse). This really screws some inmates up. They think you're weak, a pussy and they can walk all over you. Others don't know what to think. I've been a murse for 31 years so far and back in the day when I worked in facilities it was amazing how, all of a sudden, when I first start on a unit or floor, the female nurses/cna's/pct cannot lift or turn some patients. Every single time. Then you have some female patients don't want a male nurse. In homecare I've had families who didn't want male nurse taking care of their kid. It's amazing how much crap we have to deal with on top of that a typical nurse has to deal with.

As you mentioned, working in an environment with mostly women can just be draining with the excessive gossip, drama and cattiness.
Honestly, there are times I really want to get out of the medical field in general and try something different. But, I have tried retail and food but neither of those are for me, either. Honestly, it's just easiest to stick with what I know for the time being.

༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ Nursing is for females. Hear me out though. I have been a male nurse for 15 years. Male physicians are the most arrogant and laugh when they work with male nurses. Male physicians prefer the surrounding of female nurses. But when they work with male nurses side by side with a patient, the flavor changes vs male physicians working with female nurses. This happens all the time. Went to become a PA and the male physicians still treat you like you are some joke. This is the gruesome side of being a male nurse. On the upside, female nurses love working with single, fit and attractive male nurses to lighten up the mood in the workplace. Downside, male physicians despise you for that. Nothing wrong being a male nurse. Just prepare for a different flavor of discrimination.

Solution: Work nights. No physician rounding, no working side by side with docs. Most of your correspondence will be over phone or through secure chat, if it happens at all. Still get the dynamic of being a rare male in an overwhelmingly female nursing unit.
I think this applies moreso at a small hospital but still. After going nights and seeing the utter lack of admin, physicians, interdisciplinary staff (read: PT/OT), and just coming into work and doing your job, relatively few strings attached... I'll never go back to days
