    Just love that 3-cylinder beat.

The end of an era. The finest locomotive in preservation. I was at the Doncaster 150 to which 60800 (as she was then) had come from York. The rumours were everywhere about the cracked monobloc, which tragically were proven true. Why the original monobloc can't be removed and put on display at the NRM, and three separate cylinders cast (which was done in BR days for many of the class) I know not. The locomotive desperately needs to be back on the main line.

I believe the NRM have hinted that that may be possible provided that the original monobloc can be returned to it when out of ticket.

@@richardharrold9736 The A1 project has proven that nothing is beyond the boundaries of replicating any part of a locomotive that needs replacement. If they can build a complete locomotive from scratch, then they can either cast a new monobloc for Green Arrow, or convert her to three separate cylinder castings.

Very sad to think it might never steam again

A very elegant and successful design - absurd to have only one non-working example in preservation, when there are so many Black 5s etc. Mind you, we only have one A3; they cut up 60096 Papyrus, the fastest non-streamlined steam loco in the world.

A 'King' allegedly matched the 108 of 2750 just before withdrawal...

A real shame she’s being withdrawn - I’ve no doubt with the funding she could be overhauled but alas with many overhauls costing into the millions, it’s becoming harder and harder to keep these old girls running

There is nothing that cannot be fixed on a steam engine but the NRM can be a bit precious about preserving 'originality' while the amazingly expensive cockup that was Flying Scotsman means the NRM are unlikely to embark on any more restorations. Restoring existing engines, especially those with smaller wheel arrangements more suitable for heritage lines, is a better use of 'grey retirement funds' than the egotistical new builds with ridiculous coal consumption and maintenance liabilities like a P2! With the increasing unavailability of coal these are going to be museum pieces at their first 10 year overhaul.

And also the gifting of the T3 to swNage. Original wartime repairs in the box count for nowt cos “ we’ve already got a 440”. I dont like their attitude to our important rail heritage.

The NRM is now just a museum full of stuffed loco's ,and the workshops are closed to be converted to a kids play area ? shows the direction they are going
