Honestly this seems like a really smart way to do mind control. I remember I had to abandon a homebrew monster cuz I knew the mind control was gonna be unfun, I just wish I'd thought of this. As one of my favorite youtubers, can't wait to see what XP2LVL3 will become

I had a ghost posses a character once but I let the player play them out so long as he worked against the party until they saved him. Fortunately the cleric sorted him out

Maybe slightly change it so that the Mind-Controlled PC can attack Pointy Hat and actually hit it. If PH loses its hit points that way it falls off, but every time the PC attacks it gains another point of exhaustion.

Pointy hat is pretty cool. Not much to gripe about. Hed be a beholder with a twist. Hed have an actual sorceror class or wizard class.

Reminds me Raggamoffyn an old dnd monster from 2/3.5 edition. Dungeon dad covered that one, but it was very similar, but a lot weaker, so i could imagine this as a kind of uber Raggamoffyn

This gave me an idea. Pointy Hat as the bbeg who's mind controlling who the players thought wss the bbeg. So they kill the puppet but potentially leave the mastermind alive

Love it man. The mad scientist vibe is great here. I think if I get to incorporate this into a game, I will call the creature... The Twisting Hat. He'll be the consciousness of a wizard transferred into his hat to escape death. BTW, good on you for discussing HOW to use the monster in both a fun and respectful way.
I already love what you've done and can't wait to see the rest. I hope you'll consider more D&D icons in the future.
