- democracynow.org - A major debate over privacy and online encryption has erupted after the computer giant Apple announced it will resist a court order to help the FBI break into an iPhone recovered from one of the San Bernardino shooters. Citing an 18th century law, federal prosecutors requested a court order to compel Apple to assist the investigation in unlocking the phone of Syed Rizwan Farook. In December, Farook and his wife killed 14 and injured 22 others in San Bernardino. On Tuesday night, Apple CEO Tim Cook published an open letter to customers announcing his company’s decision to fight the court order. "Up to this point, we have done everything that is both within our power and within the law to help them," Cook said. "But now the U.S. government has asked us for something we simply do not have, and something we consider too dangerous to create. They have asked us to build a backdoor to the iPhone." We speak to Alex Abdo, staff attorney at the National Security Project at the American Civil Liberties Union.

FBI wanting a back door on our phones reminds me of the Led Zeppelin line: "I wanna be your back-door man". Go figure.
I was on Apple's side until I found out that Tim Cook was willing to do what the FBI wanted if the matter was SEALED, making the entire thing invisible to the public...when the FBI went public with the matter, Tim had to back peddle and is now taking the opposite position to make it look like Apple is really concerned about privacy. I will never, ever purchase, or use an Apple device again.

about 20 or so paragraphs down is this very very important paragraph:
"Apple had asked the F.B.I. to issue its application for the tool under seal. But the government made it public, prompting Mr. Cook to go into bunker mode to draft a response, according to people privy to the discussions, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The result was the letter that Mr. Cook signed on Tuesday, where he argued that it set a “dangerous precedent” for a company to be forced to build tools for the government that weaken security."
The only reason a company would ask for this, is if they intend to comply with an order but don't want the general public to know. Tim Cook is a liar, and Apple will suffer for it. Everyone is touting Apple and Tim Cook as some sort of hero for the people and privacy, but make no mistake that the FBI has shown them to be otherwise.
I don't like to see back doors on the apple. Thanks to Apple for refugees FBI.
just a couple of notes to think about, 1 the data they want is on the Phone company's server not the phone, every text you send is saved on phone company servers and the Gov can ask to see them with out a warrant right now because they have access. 2 the NAS must already have a way to get in and if they don't they should ask the Chinese Gov cause we know they do....

I wonder if some people here have considered the exigencies of
engineering. Not one of the engineers and scientists at Apple would much
care to be forced to crack the phone. I doubt morale would be conducive
to performing such highly creative, intellectually challenging work.
Will an FBI agent need to stand next to a brilliant engineer, holding a
gun to said engineer's head, and say "Be brilliant. Solve that problem."

anyone considered the extremes Apple, and the relevant software
engineers will go? What if the FBI shows up at the labs to find all the
necessary employees have quit? What immediate effect would this have on
Apple's stock price? Just imagine what would happen on the all the stock
markets.
What it the engineers and scientists are jailed for contempt of court? How would the markets react?

I get its a slippery slope but like if theres ever reason for an exception, id think mass murder would do it...
you cannot make the iphone less secure by building a backdoor without also taking the risk the governments backdoor will be discovered by malicious hackers as well.
I wonder if they have considered coming in through an auto-updating app that has been granted permissions on the phone? Update the phone with a virus through an app. Perhaps keyboard entries via bluetooth do not go through the counter. perhaps they could tear the phone apart and splice in a parallel operating system.
It would be a real bummer to spend tens of millions of dollars to crack the phone only to learn that it was empty.
Well, what I think is that this is all fake and it is just to prove to us how safe our privacy is and stuff.

A phone protected by a password (that protects personal information about the owner), How do self incrimination laws apply? I would also like to pose that no one can be forced to testify against a family member (so family members phones are off limits also). Passwords belong to individuals, i would think that the this personal information is solely your thoughts and knowledge. And therefore protected by self incrimination laws.
