    This was my store from opening to closing. I remember eating in the cafeteria then it turned into a Little Caesars then that too closed for more shopping area. I still live in the area only 10 blocks away. Didn’t hear fire engines that morning. Found out about it on Nextdoor. So glad the fire didn’t spread to the surrounding businesses, apartments, and schools. Was always hoping Walmart would take over the building. Can’t believe what it looks like now. Thank you.

      Thanks for sharing your memories for coming at this store. Was the Little Caesars immediately to the right corner side after entering the main entrance? I wish the fire never happened and the building could’ve easily been reused for other business options. I have to agree with you it’s a good thing the flames didn’t affect other areas. I was hoping the inside would be fully intact. I was kinda disappointed the interior looked bad but, it was worth checking out the place. You’re absolutely welcome 👍

      I certainly have my own mixed feelings about walmart. But it's kind of both funny and sad that even the Walmart is a big box business. They didn't even do very well on 82nd Avenue and so if I remember correctly all the Walmarts that we have in the Portland metro area are gone now aren't they?

    Awesome video, thanks for posting! I miss this Kmart, I shopped here many years. I will never forget the front of the store piled high with blooming flowers, plants, vegetables & summer items every spring in those days. The garden center was one of the best around in the 1990s! It was a very large store. Didn't realize at the time those were the good old days. A big loss for that part of town & a shame how it was intentionally neglected along with the surrounding neighborhood. Great job on the video, very brave of you to go inside ! 😀

    The large equipment in the rear of the building would have been in the “mechanical rooms” and that large cylindrical unit was a blower motor that most likely circulated cold and warm air throughout the store. I worked at the Beaverton Kmart in the 80’s and occasionally cleaned and maintained the similar area in that store.When the fan was in operation you couldn’t open the door to the blower rooms as the doors would self lock for safety as you would literally get pinned to the grate in the blower.So interesting to see the “guts” of this location before it was destroyed.

    • @AndysRetailExploration
      @AndysRetailExploration  Год назад +1

      Thanks for the info about those large equipments in the backroom! Reports have mentioned that they heard a loud boom when this Kmart was on fire. I am not sure does it has anything to do with the machines that could've exploded it in the rear section of the building.

    • @curtg7396
      @curtg7396 Год назад +2

      @@AndysRetailExploration it looks like they were at one time in the process of removing all the “combustibles” from the building.The electrical panels,gas lines and ceiling tiles usually the first to be removed,then the non load bearing walls.The Covid shutdown probably stopped the process and never got restarted.My guess is the loud boom’s people heard during the fire were walls collapsing and ultimately the roof caving in. I heard on the news just yesterday that there’s a group of nearby homeowners suing the owners of the property for not securing it thus allowing what is probably the arson to happen.Sad end for the building but hopefully something beneficial will happen with the site now.

    This makes me so sad though. Portland is facing a housing crisis and yet these buildings to sit abandoned to the point where they are allowed to be or just simply able rather to be haphazardly destroyed. I feel like these buildings could even just for a temporary while could be used as shelters for people to get back on their feet and as Resource Centers to help people get back on their feet. Yes I imagine that it would be good for a permanent situation but at least it would offer people shelter it just amazes me how many buildings just sit empty and vacant in Portland when they could be used for practical uses like resources for people needing help. I just fear that the situation in Portland will get worse before it gets better. Because while the people want better the people in control just want the money and only care about where the money goes and whether or not it will serve them well not necessarily their greater community. And then they want to complain that their Community looks and feels like crap but not do anything about it to actually make their Community feel better and to uplift the people within their Community to make it a better place for not only themselves but the Greater Community at Large.

    • @AndysRetailExploration
      @AndysRetailExploration  3 месяца назад

      My thoughts exactly. I still feel bad for the homeless people still living outside. I do agree that these kinds of building could've been used as temporary shelters and resource centers too. It's unfortunate Portland isn't what the city used to be back then.

      @sunakonakahara222 3 месяца назад

      @AndysRetailExploration I lived in Portland from 2012 to about 2018 and I just remember it being so beautiful. I remember going into the Buckman neighborhood and just looking at all the neat little kitchy businesses that they had around the area.
      Hawthorne was a great memory for me simply because there were many amazing small businesses and boutiques where you could have a wide variety of different things to look at and possibly buy. It just makes me so sad that Portland's pushing out all of the small businesses and basically bulldozing down a lot of the old historic buildings that could use a little TLC to look nice and function even into the modern day to keep Portland looking neat and a nice collection between historic and modern buildings to facilitate Not only living spaces but also businesses that enable the city of Portland to thrive. The city of Portland taxes people through the nose and requires so many permits that people can't even start a business there without having to have a buttload of money to even get started to have a brick and mortar building. Then on top of that you have all of the taxes involved in all of that jazz and it's really hard for people to be able to maintain a small business. Then you have restaurants that fluctuate in and out of fashion so quickly that it's like they're not even a full establishment anymore it's almost like they're just pop up businesses anymore. Which if you don't have a lot of money to start up you can't really start a business in that regard to. And the people that start those businesses already have a good amount of money they make as much as money as they want to for about as long as their business is in fashion and then once they've made their money they fold up and pack it in and say let's move on to the next trend.
      Portland has become so badly gentrified that it's really sad to see just how much of a disparity there is between those who have money and those who don't. And those who don't can barely afford to hang on to the places that they still have because the rent is so hi there. Which then makes Land developers ring their hands in anticipation when tenants finally move out of either old apartment buildings for old houses so that they can then buy up the property bulldoze it and then build an ugly unsightly office building or apartment buildings that nobody can afford to basically try to maximize as much profit as they can make in such a tiny space that is legally required to be a home. Meanwhile you're paying like almost $2,000 for what feels like a coffin when you could be practically paying $2,000 a month for a proper mortgage.
      It just makes me so sad to see the decline of Portland so drastically and the City of Portland is scratching their heads and they can't seem to figure out what to do about the problem. Meanwhile they had I think a couple billion dollars that were supposed to go towards helping the homeless and either they lost it or they spent it and they can't figure out where the money went. Meanwhile you have people looking down at the homeless thinking that they're the problem. And while yes they do create crime and things like that. But what are you going to do when you are in a situation where you are desperate and you are unable to access many resources because either there aren't very many out there and the ones thst are are just swamped with other people who also need help. What if you are someone with mental illness or lacking skills in doing certain things for yourself because you were never taught how. Government forms can be confusing and asking for help comes with bearing a lot of guilt and shame that asking for help can be damn near impossible because it requires being so vulnerable and people don't always respond well.
      Also as someone whose granddads served in the military there a re a lot of homeless vets in the area and it disgusts me that these people gave their minds and bodies to serve our country and this is how they are repaid.
      I'm not sure what it will take to fix our beloved Portland but something needs to change.

    It wasn't urban explorers that did this, it was bums and druggies, and terrible kids destroying stuff simply to watch it get destroyed.

      My thoughts exactly. I knew some crazy people would intentionally burn this building down. I just wish this place was still standing!
