To me the SR-71 is the most dramatic and stunning aircraft ever built, and man there's plenty of competition, among them the B-2 & the F-117. To know that you were among the select few to have flown it is a colossal accomplishment.

I was a jet mech on those. What is Really beautiful is when they go into afterburner at night. The supersonic effect on the exhaust makes it into giant blue diamonds.

I was at bitburg in the early 80, you had to wait 30 min when the craft landed it's was hot! Jet Mac who transferred out of SR.told US bout working on machine. Crazy!
hey true story guys, I was in the Navy back in the nineties aboard a carrier the USS Carl Vinson and I used to maintain they have 14 Tomcat that was a bad dude brother that thing could move the Navy decommissioned the F-14 Tomcats in 2006 because the airframes were just wrapped out on them and they were very very expensive to maintain and it was just more cost-effective to just go ahead and destroy them so that Iran can't get a hold of parts for them
Okinawa, 66,67, 76,77, I watched it many times, even at night. 77,getting out soon I was invited to go over and check out one of the SR71s, even get into the cockpit.

Kelly Johnson was a genius Aeronautical engineer to think he built this aircraft in the early sixties to mid 60's what he could have built today it was a beautiful beast.
when I saw one for real at the Toronto Airshow sitting near the CNE just on the grass near Lakeshore Blvd. When the pilot hit the afterburner briefly it spit out concentric rings of perfect bluish and orange flame what looked like a hundred feet behind each engine. It was 30 years ago and I still remember it so clearly. Of course my description does not do it justice.
I knew an SR71 pilot and he could tell some great stories. I remember he had a picture of a pack of cigarettes on a table.... It was framed and in his kitchen. I asked what the significance was and all he said was he took the photo 'at altitude' and the cigarette pack was on a table in the USSR.
Saw 1 take off & went straight up at an air show.... I remember thinking well that's where at least some of the triangle shaped UFO sightings have come from.... Dull black & extremely triangular looking at the top of it was bizzare....
Interesting thing: someone asked Wilbur Wright if he was impressed by how fast planes had gotten in the 1930’s - he said that he was far more impressed by how much weight they could carry.
117's are not retired they are reassigned because of their short range and can be recommissioned at any time. they still are active and get proper maintenance just in case

I watched a military video on the Blackbird not long ago that said NASA still uses a couple of them for some high altitude research projects...and I'm sure they had plenty of spare parts stored..if not I'm sure Lockheed Skunk Works would be happy to make them whatever they want... Especially since Lockheed is the main company in the US Military Industrial Complex...

I was at tech training at shepherds air force base when one landed with a engine out. It had 10 or so armed police walking around at all times. A c130 came in an parked near it on second day. We could see it fromladders we put up on side of a work shed. A bunch of guys from that c130 worked on it. Next morning just like this it took off. OMG athe amount of fuel it leaked on the ground and runway. I thought for sure it was going to catch fire n burn up. This brings back a great memory
I have to say, as someone who has watched the Blackbird takeoff at night, the exhaust plume is not realistic in DCS. It's actually two very long purplish flames. Much longer than the ones seen here.

Are used to sit at the end of the runway and watch them takeoff. It felt like an earthquake.

Some of the best memories as a teenager.

Memory is a funny thing. This plane is not capable of flying straight up for multiple reasons. In fact it is a slow climber compared to fighters.

Awesome jet, i was in Okinawa in the early 80s. It was awesome seeing it take off and then watch it circle the island so it slow down to land.

ha ha - I remember drip pans. We had to put them under the SR in the hangar to catch all the leaking fuel. But JP-7 isn't that flammable.
The SR drips because the Titanium expands when it goes supersonic, since it gets so hot. So it contracts on the ground and thus, the drips.
