This is why I loved Brenda's portrayal. We all forget that originally she was an innocent young woman who fell in love with an unhappily married man. She hardened after Kay "killed" Phillip, invalidated her marriage (making her son a bastard), and cheated her out of her inheritance. It's a tribute to the great Jeanne Cooper that it's impossible to see Kay as a villain, though in the old days, she did some terrible things. And it's a tribute to Brenda that she was able to transform sweet Jill into the trashy vamp we all loved to hate.
Brenda and Jess were both superb at portraying Jill. I grew up with both, but over the years, I grew to respect and revel in Jess Walton’s ferocity as Jill. Brenda will always remind me of my first few years with Y&R...the GREAT 80s!

But, yeah, I watched Y&R in the first few seasons, and the "Jill Foster" character had become too essential to bring in a replacement for the original, Brenda Dickson. Trivia: In that episode of "Gunsmoke" featuring Jess, her fiance was Robert Urich, who eventually starred in "SWAT." And in that same episode, Robert's brother was played by Mark Shera, who later also starred in "SWAT."
I was reading on another one of the classic Y&R "must see clips" and a commenter suggested why doesn't Sony put these original classic episodes of Y&R on DVDs to sell like so many other classic shows are now doing? I think they are afraid that the original episodes from 40 years ago would have more eyeballs and interest than today's episodes airing now. It would be a huge moneymaker if they sold these original episodes, so the question is why aren't they cashing in on that huge fan base that would clamor for these old episodes?
I noticed something from watching old clips of Brenda's Jill. I don't know if anyone noticed but in the 80s, Brenda Dickson seemed to have changed her role slightly as Jill. In the 70s, she had more emotion and was more emotional as a character. By the 80s, she became this sorta cutthroat character. Not necessarily a villain, but not a very nice person either. Which I suppose was a result of the situations that happened between her and Kay when she was with Phillip. She also adopted this strange accent too in the 80s, which has often become the butt of a lot of jokes on the internet because of how campy she portrayed herself. Which is not entirely shocking since she played on a soap opera. And soap operas, especially during the 80s, were especially (and could be extremely) campy and outlandish. But it was like as she became more affluent and got rich as a result of marrying John Abbott and becoming a huge part of Jabot, she let the fortunes go to her head. I'm always fascinated by Brenda Dickson's Jill because it genuinely was a polar opposite to the Jill played by Jess Walton. Brenda's seemed much more opulent and obsessed with glamour and being self absorbed. Maybe Jess' Jill was too for a period but not so much later on. Brenda Dickson certainly wasn't the greatest actress but she was perfect for the soaps and especially the character of Jill Foster Abbott, one of maybe a few characters on Y&R who truly had a very big evolution throughout the show.
Tyler Talks, I think Brenda was a good actress. Lookit, Jill changed. Jill was kicked around and kicked to the curb and abused and when she and John divorced, she snapped and decided to look out for her own interests and to play hardball. And she had a taste of wealth and didnt wanna be left penniles again. And she wanted to work in the cosmetics industry. She was like a cornered animal, and she ended up on top somehow. She became ruthless, somewhat, but that was an evolution of her character. She felt she was surrounded by lions and in a man's world and Kay was still trying to destroy her marraiage. Jill fought back, and won against the odds.
I disagree. That piece of acting having a fit with Katherine showed how good she actually was until they had her start camping it up like Alexis Carrington (Dynasty)
How can you watch this episode of Brenda Dickson and not think she was a wonderful, realistic actress ???? I don't possibly know of how anyone could give a more natural or realistic performance. Jeanne and Brenda were wonderful actresses and quite irreplaceable. 💜💜❤️❤️🧡🧡😉😉😀😀
😁😁😁....it's kind of a long story. They had an affair behind Katherine's back. Philip asked Kathrine for a divorce, flew to the Dominican Republic to get that divorce from Katherine, when he got back Katherine picked him up from the airport and drove their car off a cliff. Philip was barely alive and put on his deathbed in the hospital, but he was conscious enough to marry Jill. However, shortly after that deathbed wedding Katherine had that marriage annulled therefore robbing Jill's baby of his father's name and inheritance.
