That actually is true 😅. I used to be REALLY into quake 3, and I was good. But everyone knew eachother. We’d do big servers with big maps and be like “OH HEY SOandSO JOINED! WHATS UP!”
Suicide Squad felt like a game designed by accountants for the benefit of shareholders; not by passionate developers for gamers.
It felt like a game designed by traders to be able to efficiently short the stock of the company.
It looks like the devs were asked to make "a live service shooter" and were only told what IP it would be after 2 years of work making the basic gameplay. :s
As an accountant, I resent that.
Accountants would be smart enough to know that the negative return on investment of working with SBI is never worth it.

These executives are 60+ y.o. guys who made their careers in financial consulting firms. Most of them have never played a videogame in their entire lives. They don't know their product, and therefore don't know how to sell it. They simply look at trend statistics and base their decisions on that.
Those workers will then come back a decade later making their own games abd succeeding while those executives will be broken as they'll burn every last bridge abd eventually go broke no thanks to their stupid grandkids

It's like they purposefully went out of their way to design this game as horribly as possible, so no surprise it's tanking as hard as I thought it would.
What gets me though is how, supposing the leaks are true and the Squad would be rescuing the League from different dimensions, that Rocksteady decided _not_ to lean in on that angle to drive interest in new seasons. They really spent as much time as they did on this game and released it thinking players would be enticed to go kill more Brainiacs and do the same repetitive bullshit ad nauseum with _no other compelling hooks._

WB took a gamble, they wanted a game where the huge whales spend hundreds or thousands on skins and other MTs. If they can get that, they are pretty much set to makes millions upon millions comparably very easily. They are so set on that gamble they've already said they won't learn from this and keep trying.

Avengers could have been good if they'd built a better game than repetitive live service missions around the character movesets. Even the game's narrative is just a bridge to live service missions. Suicide Squad has a full map & more cutscenes but has worse characters, less unique combat/character movesets, and even more generic missions. Tired of seeing all the wasted development effort for this kinda stuff.

What happened was the hacker used an invalid character model (NOT Deathstroke) on the leaderboard, and created custom text and and icon to display there instead, and made it look like a placeholder. Deathstroke, as confirmed by leakers with inside information, isn't even physically in the games files yet, it would be impossible for hackers to have him.
So they do not necessarily have these extra characters finished. Also, for the record, hackers can say they got a top leaderboard position with Mario and Luigi if they wanted, in the game's current state anyways.

It's a $70 USD game that struggles to maintain even 200 players, with a peak of about 3k at launch. Then you have Helldivers 2, a $40 USD game, where the lowest amount of player's they've ever had was at release at 64k+ players, with a peak at 458k+.
They have a massive IP, but that's about it. In terms of gameplay, there isn't much there. There is nothing that justifies its price point, especially when other games in a similar field are cheaper are just better. That's what happens when you chase a trend purely to target quarterly targets instead of chasing quality for long term targets.
I don't blame the studio itself, but the people that decided to pivot the studio in that direction. I bet they could have made a great singleplayer experience with whatever story they have lined up; it was what they were good at. But alas...

You know what’s also sad? Metal Gear Survive had a player count higher than Suicide Squad for a couple months and that game was the subject of controversy (mainly the Kojima VS Konami controversy).

Marvels Avengers wasn't even that bad. Story was fine, and there was a large roster of heroes who all played very differently.

I will say: i bought the game, played, liked it, but it can not be defended. I'm not surprised at all if it dies, there's just too many games that require you to play every day and this just doesn't have the catch. I won't lie, i would be playing if i didn't have so many games to catch on, especially with a few of them starting events/releasing on such close dates. I hope we get Ms Freeze, though.

Just to put into perspective _just how bad_ 146 concurrent players is, DC Universe Online, a *13 year old* MMO, which is also based on DC characters, a game, I should add, that currently feels like it's on life support, has *418* concurrent players with a 24-hour peak of over 500!
After all the AAA games that killed their studio last year I'm scared but expecting this to kill rocksteady, I don't even know how they can recover from this they can pull a comic book video game retcon and say all of this was loosely elseworld from Arkham Knight but everyone who worked on the original games is gone now, it would have to be something like a Superman game or the Batman beyond game people wanted for so long just to give people something they generally really really wanted

I genuinely enjoyed the marvel avengers campaigns. The story had heart, likeable characters, and respected the franchise. It also had the best version of Kamala Khan I've seen outside of the comics.
