Roger is really smart, disciplined and focused. And he has a very simple, direct and down-to-earth personality. The Who definitely needs him as the front man and singer to balance the group out with Pete who is more mercurial and wayward.
when i was a kid i used to think roger was the weak link in the best rock band on the planet. but i was wrong. he's the heart of the band - although you wouldn't lump him in with someone like van morrison or rod stewart, he's a really great soul singer coz everything that comes out of his mouth is so convincing! the dictionary definition of 'salt of the earth' and a lovely subtle sense of humour too. love the old boy...
@@soxwina It was Freddie Mercury but the sound of Peter lyrics and guitar thunderfingers himself and Moon the loon on drums with all of them harmonising pushed the Who way over the edge.
I always thought Roger was the best, as is The Who. The Beatles and The ..Stones are great in their own way. And Quadrophenia is THE BEST rock album ever!
I prefer his gritty voice to the higher ones that just scream "Baby, baby, baby". Roger has thst masculinity that just sounded like Rock & Roll to me..
@@harrykadaras9459 Beautiful thing about rock - it takes all forms and goes down all roads. Some like the sappy/trippy songs of the Beatles, the pure party and swagger of the Stones, the extreme Britishness and sadness of the Kinks, the pure power and grittiness of the The Who. There’s a million great artist/bands out there under the umbrella of Rock and there’s something for everybody!
This is great. Roger never runs out of good stories. He remembers everything because he was the only member of the Who not to abuse drugs or alcohol. A lot to be said for sobriety... But truth to tell if I had my druthers I would prefer getting drunk and destroying hotel rooms with Keith.
Once again Roger is on top of everything! He is so right...you must stop listening to other music to be your most creative in writting music...and yes, a little weed is always nice too.
I have always been a massive fan of the Who and years ago I fished at Roger’s lake in Sussex with a mate, when we had finished we went back to the fishing lodge to weigh the catch and record it, and Roger was sitting behind the desk ! He asked us how we had done and was pleased we had done ok, he said” I suppose you’ll be wanting a cup of tea” of course we said yes! Blimey the things I should have asked him, he was very chatty mainly about the fishing and generally a very nice bloke, As for the tea I didn’t know whether to drink it or frame it!
Amazing bloke. Saw him at some live gig in London, his voice was faint for some reason. He just closed his eyes & belted out what he could, sweat pouring out of every pore. I knew I was watching a legend. He was really out of this world.🙌👍✊
2:18 Notice...you are only hearing bass, drums, a tinkling synth and a tambourine backing Roger. No Guitar. Yet it sounds like a symphony. Moon and Ox, roar on! Wherever you are.
I remember when John Entwistle passed on and The Who chose to play on. One of two members (or someone close to the band) said that they had already prepped for this and, if they didn't go on, many of the side musicians, roadies, technicians, etc. wouldn't get their money and would be financially hit. That's so true, and it's not something people (or maybe just me) understand.
He's now 78 and your comment ten years old. Still looks good for his age. I wish it were 1969 again although I was born in '72. I always loved their Woodstock 'See me feel me' live version which was so powerful.
Roger is right about 1 thing : its much better to leave a some mystique about a band ...like Roger states there is to much info out there about artist ...its really sad on that end of it ..
He's mine Haylee ! I've wanted him since I saw The Who at 13 yrs old, my first concert... was right up front, and caught his tamborine... made eye contact with him during a quiet part of Behind Blue Eyes (swoon) LOL
He got it spot on about Savile Row! Some of the best tailors in the world but they take themselves too seriously. Fred Astaire encountered a similar issue when he asked for a modification to Evening Dress worn by the future Edward the Eighth. They refused even though he explained that he would be dancing in it. A Jewish tailor complied & you can still see it in Top Hat.
I'd say Peter Wolf of the J. Geils Band. He doesn't have the same strong set of pipes as Roger Daltrey or Robert Plant, but what an energetic showman! Kind of like an American Mick Jagger. Check out their classic album "Full House" to hear the energy! One of the greatest live rock albums ever made.
+Naught 4Sale Really good to read your comment about J.Geils. I saw them in the early 80's in Detroit and Peter (in particular) was a-f***kin'-mazing! I can still vividly 'see' him as he leapt onto some big electrical box that was oddly in the middle of the venue - in one badass move that I've never seen done before or since....and he never stopped singing. He was connecting with the poor folk who didn't have great seats and that crowd went nuts! Peter Wolf, wow! I'm going to listen to Full House next....thanks for reminding me!
Mick Jagger is the greatest rock frontman ever. Roger is right there, as is Freddie Mercury &Robert Plant . But if you look at charisma, stage presence, longevity, songwriting, Mick is on top. My opinion, of course 😃
Over-saturation of music is a problem. So many good songs ruined from over playing them. The media industry, which includes the pop music industry, will milk any media product dry, product quality and artistic integrity be damned.
The Who could still go on even without Pete Townshend. Joe Walsh could be a replacement. Joe Walsh partied with Keith Moon, and gave Townshend the guitar that changed the Who forever, the one he used for Who's Next.

I have have read Pete Townsend's auto biography and he and every other source says he's not Jewish,he did live in an area of London which became home to many polish Jews after ww2, and Pete's best friend as a child was from a polish Jewish family. "The noise that John made in his life will still be echoing around the Universe..." Beautiful tribute to the Ox.
Yeh. Have to say ... that bit near caused an overflow here...
@Steve A
Wasn't until Zak Starkey came along that they got anything near that again.
Funny. My initial reaction was it was a shot at GOAT bass player. I’m sure he meant well.
Big John the ox, the bass player who turned the bass into another instrument, the way he played_#1 bass player, a great legend

Roger is an awesome singer and pours his heart out when he's doing it. I love Pete, too, but he can be a bit conceded at times...
Gotta admire someone who abstains for the sake of their art. Kind of the opposite of the rest of the world.
As opposed to John, whose voice was completely shot by the time he was 40.
John Entwhistle was probably the best of the best. Nobody ever played like him.

Music is not the same any more and men are not the same anymore! Why we love old stuff is because it was honest and powerful!
Love everything The Who did, best band in the Universe !
His new Autobiography read by himself, is amazing.
As roger said. It all clicked musically once Keith was in the band. As talented as the band members are, without Keith the magic was gone.
Lucky dog, i slightly disagree, the magic was created when Moonie was here for sure, and carried forward ever since.
Just my opinion.👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
