"To surprise the audience, keeping them on their toes. Because predictability is no fun."
What a nice quote! That's what I thought too!
This is the idea I've always held to. I'm a storyteller by heart, and a filmmaker by choice. I shake my head when I see "short films" that are just compilations of pretty shots in a beautiful location with cinematic music in the background. Sure, it's attractive, but the talent is wasted! The best things about filmmaking is the influence on society, the perspective provided, and the lives impacted. I am a storyteller before I am a filmmaker, because stories change the world. Great stuff as always, Simon!
Elite Lens Films I fucking hate when people put "4K" or "Shot on RED Epic-W" in the titles of their films. All these people care SO much about resolution, but their films have no substance, they're terrible...
can i ask a question? so movies that managed to rake in multi-millions in revenue tells a very good story like titanic, inception and other similar movies?? how come i don't hear about relating story telling to these movies???
Alex I feel the same way. Who cares what camera you filmed with if your story sucks? If you're testing or reviewing the camera, it's fine...but for a narrative short, it's pulling the attention away from the actual film and setting on the visual effects and image quality.
caco ko I'm not sure I understand. Titanic won a bunch of Oscars and is considered a classic. You don't do that with a crappy storyline...could you rephrase your question?
Elite Lens Films That's pretty much 90% of videos online... like devinsupertramp and other crap
I really appreciate how you talk about filmmaking using different mediums than just cinema. I am a huge Far Side fan, so I really loved this!
Your videos get better and better. Great work here. The editing was professional.
UltimateKyuubiFox +
Your channel continues to release original innovative content every week. Thank you for making these videos!
thank you for all of your encouraging comments!
In my films, I love to add a hidden parallel or message through visuals that the viewer may or may not notice. I think this is important in shorts because, you only have so much time to get your point across and making a point through visuals makes the content stronger.
I've been writing my whole life...now just getting into short story telling and writing my first novel. One thing short story telling has taught me is that the mind will fill in so many blanks, it's really remarkable. It's amazing to me how much a reader will get from a story I write that is one scene, with two men talking in an office in 500 words. Story is king. Thanks for the video.
I am a amateur film maker and i have learnt alot from you Simon. I can easily recommend this channel to anyone.
Man you teach me better than my film school i have told everyone about you. Amazing job man keep up the work!!!!!!
thanks really appreciate it buddy :)
This is an incredible lesson about cinematography and is something filmmakers need to keep in mind always. And to add to that, think of cinematography as a viewer, and that EVERY SINGLE SECOND matters. That's when creativity begins.
Keep it up Simon, refreshing as always.
For any filmmaker, the perfect blend of storytelling and genius cinematography lies in Breaking Bad, greatest show of all time!
I agree wholeheartedly haha
true
the wire is better
i love watching and hearing you talk about filmmaking concepts
I love it when I get a notification you upload
me too :-)
LlamaFluff NOTIF SQUAD 😂
I don't care if you are going to make billions in movies, your are a great director, teacher and a generous person that shares knowledge, thanks bro!!
I really enjoy hearing what you're learning from non-cinematic sources. Calvin & Hobbes and The Far Side are two of my all-time favorites.
@DSLRguide You've hit the mark, not just with great points that all visual artist should think about, but with your own example of great cinematography. You know how to tell a story.
Almost more of a video essay. I like it
:)
fostej99 hmm not for me really haha. But I get where you're coming from! I was more focused don how this is more of a broad video that ended up being focused on one subject, rather than a step by step tutorial.
you're the type of creator that makes youtube great. thank you for sharing so selflessly
You are giving away the gold. Teaching the direction and helping new guys to build up that sense of creation. Loved it.
This channel is so under-rated.... I learn something new from every video.... And its all so inspirational.
Dude, I love these videos! please don't stop making them. They have taught me SO much!
You manage to make your videos so inspirational and thought-provoking, unlike any other youtuber. Thank you so much for sharing the things you know, we are many that truly appreciate it!
Mr. Cade, that was worth watching every frame, and listening to all your narrative. Thanks for the surprise!
Your 6 minutes eclipses the entirety of some of the other 15 minute videos covering this topic...Thank you. Will be purchasing that comic soon
Nice storyboards from Interstellar
good eye! (only one of them was from interstellar though)
Man, I've just discovered your channel and I never pushed that subscribe button so hard!! Your videos are AMAZING!! Here in Italy is late at night but I can't wait to watch all of them starting tomorrow. I've been trying to make up my mind about what path to take, out of that endless world that Art Direction is, for a while now, and I think your channel will help me with that! Thank you and keep up your amazing work!
Simon you genius son of a gun!
Mayank Bhattacharya oye u here hi mayank
Another spot on vid. Economy, surprise are so important.
Awesome stuff Simon! Film form has always fascinated me and I've loved studying how filmmakers use the film craft to tell a story. You're channel is such a great resource for that. Great job man! Can't wait for the next video!
Wow Simon, your vids are getting so much better and so much more informative compared to a lot of other stuff on youtube
Larson is one of my all time favorites and I can't believe I've never put this together for myself. Excellent video!
Your vision and understanding is phenomenal! I'm a fan!
This is literally the best video on RUclips.
can you make a video about recording sound? i've learnt so much from you and ty so much
sure, here you go: ruclips.net/video/VPIHU_GpUZY/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/TJ3sS5si1vw/видео.html
Actually, This channel has some serious potential to grow huge.
hats off to you sir.
Quality videos.
I love that Far Side!! I used to read my friend's copy from, I think, 15 years ago. Amazing comics. Great stories. So glad you highlighted it.
I think the reason for storys and conflicts being less in focus than visuels in shortfilms, is that as someone who starts making movies you have a limit to what is possible and also makes sence and fits together.
Wow man just love your videos and maybe why I loved this one more is because you tried to explain the core of film, which is storytelling. Good work there.
fantastic video as always Simon. also - that ending though!
hi sherlock, the end was about misdirection and surprise. it seemed the person would cut the apple with the knife side, which is the expected side and not the jagged side he ended up using. Surprise!
Just adore what you did with the apple at the end, that was clever!
Buckeye Imaging please explain. I didnt understand
alex fernandez he is known for always biting into an apple at the end or at one point of a video, but instead of just biting into it, he just cut a slice out. it's his throw, to unpredictability.
Its the same thing as making photorealistic drawings of pictures of celebrities, the talent is wasted on an empty work with absolutely no meaning or backstory.
Nicolas Andrade I get where you're coming from, and i agree to a degree. It's just that I don't think it's useless to make 2 minute long videos saying "look at these pretty landscapes", Or plain photorealistic storyless drawings/paintings. It's part of learning. Everyone has to make some of those some time or another so they actually have experienced first hand why everyone says you shouldn't. It also teaches you the techniques to use when telling a story.
Shure as an exercise it's great, keep doing it. But if that's the only thing you do. It is not going to be your story the one you are telling, but that of the art director. The people who create stories most of the time lack the skill to visualize them, think of the quote from Robert Rodriguez "if you're creative and technical, you're unstoppable." That's why Hollywood is pumping out one bad film after another. It's because technical people are in charge of storytelling. Go watch the analysis on Superman Vs Batman from nerd writer. He states that it's a movie with moments rather than substance. Cool looking shots (technic) that do not have a story or any congruence to be a successful film.
Nicolas Andrade haha dude I couldn't agree more. You got me all wrong: I didn't mean you should always shoot story-less films, just when you start out. I believe every beginning filmmaker should go through the phases like story-less films, over exaggerated grading, slow pacing etc. That way you see for yourself why things don't work.
It's becoming a thing nowadays that people are blindly following advice that they hear without asking why. It's starting to bother me because it's becoming constraining. Rules are being made where there shouldn't be any. There are no rules in filmmaking in my opinion. If something works it works. As long as there's a good reason. All of my youtube 'disputes' end by people spitting out recycled advice you hear everywhere.
This comment kind of turned into a rant but basically I agree with you, just try not to be like everyone else and follow advice blindly...
No, i completely got you and I was struggling with this thing, I started turning assignments late in college because I wanted to make them amazing, or I wouldn't like the premise the teacher set. So I would waste time doing creative work instead of the "technical" assignment. Now I mindlessly do the thing the teacher asks and its done. I hope I can get to the point where I can balance both Technical ability and creative ability. So yeah Simon, your 2 minutes of landscapes formed you in a technical manner and that is still valuable.
I love the way you speak, its so calming
Thank you so much for everything you are putting out here. I have learned so much from your channel and am continuing to learn and grow in film. Thanks for being real and teaching us things that matter and that other people aren't talking about. Inspiring.
Thank you Simon. This video and another you did previously has made me rethink my storytelling.
Really helpful way of thinking when creating storyboards! Thanks again Simon!
It's good to fill a frame with details to dramatize them just like old classic paintings of Davinci and on the reversal, Every Image has an emotion which makes the viewer feel something irrespective of the visual information could be even something very subtle and minimalistic just like a white screen, which may make you feel calm and red screen kinda disturbed at end it is what we feel, the film is about, an empathy creating machine.Thing is, we never knew, our feelings are unpredictable to different information.
Really interesting stuff Simon. I realised something as I watched this. There is something compelling about your narration. You have an interesting cadence and rhythm when you speak. You have a crisp enunciation. It is certainly an asset in your videos.
More like a DSLRguide... this is an ARTguide... Thank you man.
that last shot with the apple blew my mind, awesome video
Great value content Simon! Thank you for the video and for finding time to educate other around you!
This is fantastic as always. I can't wait to try out some of this stuff! :)
This was truly Brilliant. As a matter of fact, all your content is. Thank you.
Simon, your insights are always so enjoyable and enlightening. Keep it up.
Your videos are a much needed elixir for me to survive
Oohh boy Simon..
What a video !!
Cheers to you mann 👍🙌
So much simple & easy philosophy..
We all usually tend to forget :)
i am going to take the guiness record of the one who watched all DSLR Guide episodes
Great approach to cinematography! Would love to see some examples of this in films
yesss the apple is back :-) great content man, that's exactly what I wanted to shoot emotional, nice looking scenes, but you helped me out. I will seek to be unpredictable.
This is the best video about storytelling that I have seen.
great plot twist: Simon cut off a piece of apple instead of biting in it at the end, nice way of showing us how to be unpredictable
One of my favorites so far... And ive been here since the gear reviews
My school administrators and Professors has given me the opportunity to be the school Photojournalist and Official School Event Photographer/Video editor by the use of your techniques and advises Simon 😃😍. A big salute to you 😁😊
on of your best ones.. thank you for this opportunity.
the sincerity with which you share all your knowledge with the world is going to take you only ahead :)
I'm sure we haven't seen the best of you yet.
Scratching the surface. Just a little taste. A mere slice of the apple!
You just keep on peeling away the layers that make what it's all about, the core of filmmaking.
one of the best explanation of storytelling. Thank you
Thank you so much for sharing this. I found you video very profound. It provoked thought and mindfulness as what we need to really focus on as a creator. That story is everything.
Great video, telling a story and allowing the consumer to tell it at their pace.
Slow clap for the ending, with the apple, you got me. Very nice!
motion > trejectory > enclosure! (thatnks!) expectation > comprehension > surprise!
Thanks for the knowledge...have a new appreciation for single framed cartoons
Great video as always, very informative and usefull. i'm not wonder when we see your product on the big screen and what it will be
the stories full of mystery - hold our attention
THIS IS UR BEST VID YET
Man, you really know how to educate us and explained it nicely. Thank you for this, gonna get those comics!
Best channel of whole youtube.
Simon, this was a brilliant episode and I thank you for posting it. I do think you short changed yourself by missing an opportunity to let your fans help support you. Gary Larson is a great story tiller and I think many of your viewers would be interested in buying this book. You do so much work on this channel to create value for your audience and should expect something in return. At the end of this video you could say "If you are interested in buying this book and want to help support my channel click the affiliate link in the description. It helps a lot, thanks". at a minimum, place a link in the description.
the trouble is that amazon is the best place for that, but I cancelled my amazon affiliate a while ago when I found out all of the ethical issues that I didn't want to support. It's fine, some of my videos are sponsored, some aren't :)
DSLRguide hi I'm moving to the uk what good camera stores are their
with that spelling, you're probably better off taking english classes instead of buying cameras.
Dankside why would you go out of your way to make a hirtull comment like this? He is not a native English speaker and most of the world understands the struggles that come with living in an English centric world. You don't know his life story yet you feel compelled to point out flaws in others. Perhaps you should turn that attitude back to your self and then maybe you will feel the true distrust power of hertfull comments. Perhaps I have this wrong, you already know pain and want to lash out with the only think you know. I invite you to only speak to bring others up and you will begin to understand the joy of living with compassion.
That motorcycle camera trick blew my mind.
Discovered your channel by mistake, absolutely love it! I've subscribed, please keep up the good work.
Filmmaking and The Farside. Brilliant.
This is one of my favourite videos of yours!!
How would you feel about reviewing our short films on your channel, saying what you like and dislike and what could have been done better?
Donald.V Thomas yeah!
that's actually a really good idea
This is actually a very interesting idea! Some sort of series could be developed to critique others work whilst promoting independent filmmakers.
Great Video, I like it far more than the other videos you made, and I don't know why.
As the old saying goes, content is king...
The Far Side was always my favorite comics in the Sunday paper :)
Imagine Simon would upload daily
Great video, Simon. You're definitely onto something--films need to be surprising.
THIS IS WHY 360 DEGREE VIDEOS ARE A TERRIBLE IDEA!!!!!! I don't want to let the audience see what I don't want them to see. That would just ruin the whole art of deciding what to show and when.
FINALLY SOMEONE UNDERSTANDS WHY I HATE 360 VIDEOS TOO!
I agree. Though somehow, someday, there will be creative ways to create 360 videos.
Then make every angle be what you want them to see.
Lucas Scott Exactly Lucas, something like that. For example: those people at vine and what they did with those super-short clips. (Rest in peace, Vine)
Mini, the car brand, did an interesting bit (short film) in 360 (even provided me with a free cardboard viewer).
It kind of gave me an idea what 360 video could be and I must say, I see its potential.
You could have 'who dun it?' shorts where the viewer has to watch around him/herself for clues. That sorta thing.
Don't shoot it down quite yet. It could be very engaging to let the viewer experience this alternate reality on its own. It also means that watching a movie twice never really gets you the same experience.
Man, you deserve way more subscribers than you have.
the far side breakdowns were great. thank you!
Nice to see an apple after a really long time
Where have I been all my life ,this channel is great
such a great channel right!? Have a great day:)
Love this video and the examples were so spot on and well explained!
Sweet, a new video. Glad I set notifications!
this is your 200th video! congrats!
Outstanding explanation, now I just have to figure out how to apply it.
Priceless words... very good vid
Am a pilot and for years have been holding back the idea of film making - never enough time... however ur vids are not only useful but inspirational and motivating... thanks!
good luck on your filmmaking journey!
being a vlogger (storyteller) I get to learn greatlg from these videos✌!
😀
Ibrahim Vlogs vlogging isn't story telling... But some vlogs do tell stories. You can't just call yourself a storyteller if you vlog because most of the vloggers on YT don't tell a story in their videos
Headpacked That's true but most of the time if you are vlogging, you're story is your day.. if you still haven't noticed that.
Ibrahim Vlogs eh, that gives too much credit to someone. If that was the case you can simply turn on the camera and anything in the frame would be telling a story...
exactly, that is true!
Brilliant video as always, Simon.
Dude, I just now discovered your channel! You are the best!
