I think the best part of that scene is actually when his brother watches him in the rearview mirror as he is breaking down, and the lightbulb gradually comes on and he just KNOWS.
YAY YOU DID ANNE WITH AN E THANK YOU Also she seems “big brained” because her character is suuuper talkative and inquisitive and loves using big words and lots of them lol. The show is very cute, it deals with racism, sexism, and lots of other issues. Definitely recommend:)
So Buffy’s my favorite show and Buffy’s the kind of show that is a journey and has a lot of contextual stuff in it so it can come off cringey if you’re dropped in with no context. There’s another “metaphorical coming out “ scene in season 2 of Buffy where Buffy “comes out” as slayer to her mom and it’s very much treated as a coming out scene and she gets told that if she leaves not to come home. it’s a really rough brutal scene but it hits in the feels every time.
Willow and Terra saved my life I remember being a kid in a homophobic country and seeing the episode were they lose there memory but we're still in love with each other it completely changed my life
Aww I love this! As much as I didn’t vibe with the coming out scene, I can appreciate that these characters (and Tara) hood a special place for many! 💖
there’s also a great scene in Stranger Things when Will “comes out” to his brother thats kinda brief but also shows that he is getting closer to not hiding anymore and accepting that’s who he is
The buffy scene was a little bit awkward. But generally they handled Willow´s coming out and her relationship with a girl SO well. Especially for the time.
yeah i couldn't get past the awkward acting, but overall, the scene / reaction isn't terrible, and i can appreciate how big it wouldve been at the time! 💜
@@bluegrasskids52784I believe so. They aren't normally awkward, and this isn't the total coming out scene. Buffy was not 'immediately'okay. There is another piece later that they talk about it and Buffy admits to get awkwardness and they talk about it a bit more
Maybe I can see from the eyes of someone who's never watched Buffy how you didn't get it, but her reaction to her best friend coming out was perfect. She wasn't expecting it in the least and then is strictly supportive once past the intial phase of shock. It is not about the time it came out either bc her reaction would be perfect today as well.
I wish the full Buffy scene was there, there were So many more emotions as it continued and they hugged. It was Perfect and help me realize that I’m not alone.
You two are quite charismatic and well-spoken! I found this video via the Buffy content, and aim a wee bit sad you weren’t impressed by the scene. But you explained your reasoning well, so I understand where you’re coming from. I think coming from a conservative background and being older, I actually find it the most realistic out of the bunch. That initial shock, and over compensating of “that’s fine, that’s fine” and realizing “why am I acting weird, this is my dear friend” and making that sincere connection is all done within seconds. So I actually love Buffy’s acting.
I think that Willow's coming out in Buffy has to be taken in context. At the time, there were practically no main wlw characters in network dramas. Most wlw storylines we did get, were done for ratings - they were the most blatant queerbaiting, highly pushed in marketing as "groundbreaking", and garnered hype for the show through controversy. Even within the shows narrative, it was always seen as experimentation. Once the storyline was over, one part of the pair would usually leave the show, and the other would go on to only have straight relationships, their sexuality never to be mentioned again. With the (very very) few characters that did stay LGBTQ+, they would usually have a way over-the-top, dramatic storyline, such as outing, being kicked out, bullied or gay bashed etc... And even then, after the storyline would be resolved, their sexuality would usually take a back seat, and they would mostly stay single. This was obviously due to public opinions at the time, but also had a lot to do with censorship rules with 90s network TV. Buffy being a show mainly aimed at teens, which decided to not only make one of the main and most beloved characters queer, but also chose to keep her as such long term - was in itself, groundbreaking. The fact that it was handled with so much care, is really clear if you look at other coming out storylines we had at the time... Willow being pretty casual about it, choosing to tell Buffy of her own accord, without expecting it to be a huge dramatic moment, was already unheard of. And yeah, Buffy freaked a little, but again we have to remember the times... It was such a short moment, and then she was honestly pretty great. I also feel like the context of the whole episode matters here. The show made a very important commentary on the trend I tried describing above. Basically, Willow's long-term bf Oz, which she dated through high-school, had to breakup with her cause he went on a journey to find a cure for being a werewolf. At the start of S04 (their first year at collage), he was gone and Willow met Tara. The two became close and then in this episode, Oz comes back, having found a cure. Watching this episode air as a pre-teen, my heart automatically sank since going by what would usually happen in other shows, I expected Willow and Tara to turn out as just another queerbaiting storyline, which would now be forgotten since Oz came back. However, what ends up happening in the episode, is that Willow actually chooses Tara over him. That is literally something never before seen on TV up to that point - she had a chance to "be normal", to go back to a boy that she did love, who treated her well and truly loved her back - But she still chose Tara over him. If you weren't around in the 90s, you might not realize how unbelievable that was to watch, but trust me, it was! If you also take into account that after said episode, Willow and Tara stayed together for over 2 seasons, and even though Tara's exit was handled somewhat unfortunately (they killed her off basically), Willow went on to have another relationship with a woman in the following season - meaning, the show never went back on her coming out. They kept her queer which was great. The show also featured the first ever wlw kiss on network TV, with Willow and Tara, which again, was handled amazingly. It was purposely left out of trailers and promotion for the episode, as to not fall into said queerbaiting "trend". They put their first on-screen kiss into a dramatic episode that had nothing to do with the couple, and showed it as a totally normal part of life. In that episode they are all grieving the sudden loss of Buffy's mom, and the kiss was meant as a moment of comfort; Tara trying to calm Willow down after she breaks down crying. This was a full season after they've been together with no on-screen kisses, and so it was very clear that there was no element of queerbaiting or publicity stunts - Simply two queer women in an actual, loving, long-term relationship. As far as the acting goes, you're of course allowed not to like it, but yeah - it was pretty normal for network TV of the time, and in fact, I personally think Alyson (Willow) did an amazing job at conveying her internal conflict, without making it overly dramatic. I understand why it might be jarring when you're so used to the TV shows of 2020's, but again, as someone who watched it at the time, it was seriously incredible and paved the way for a lot of other wlw couples and characters in the early 2000s and beyond.
With the Willow and Tara moment, it wasn't bad acting. It was cringe and awkward because, in-universe, it was meant to be. That's actually great acting.
Oz was the love of Willow's life as far as Buffy knew. They survived her cheating on him ( with another guy). Tara at that point was just some weirdo friend of Willows. No kidding it was a shock. Plus evil vampire Willow was gay.

When y’all reacted to Sex Education I actually almost started crying. As an asexual we are a heavily underrepresented group in TV and film, and we RARELY get scenes like that. Thank you ❤
I have a very special relationship with Love, Simon. We watched this movie in school and it was one of the first peaces of queer media that I ever consumed. I actually read the book afterwards and it was the first queer book I ever read. Because of this, it has a very special place in my heart.
As much as I love Buffy I can fully understand where you’re coming from with how dated it is. There is a lot of stuff that absolutely does not hold up but Willow and Tara are wonderful. Also had the first lesbian kiss on tv
yea i had a hard time with the awkward acting but can still appreciate how important / big a scene like this was at the time! also that it was actually quite a long scene as well
There’s an episode called Family which I think threads the line of talking about queerness and homophobia through very obvious allegory. It would probably again be dated but the end speech gets me every time.
Decidedly NOT the first lesbian kiss on TV. The first on a tv show (at least in the US) was on LA Law around ten years earlier. And that's debatable. Willow and Tara MIGHT have had the first lesbian kiss between main characters in a long term relationship. Maybe.
Leighton’s coming out scene always gets me. It’s probably the raw emotion and how you can relate to that fear. I can relate, fully. When I found out I was a Lesbian I never said I was for a while, because I was scared to and was scared about how others would feel. But then I realized that I didn’t have to tell anyone who I didn’t want to, and then it just got easier, I think. It’s still scary sometimes, but now I can say it fully and with certainty that I am, in fact, a Lesbian and it won’t change whether I choose to say it or not.
Honestly, the way you guys talked about Buffy was very correct (for someone looking back on it, all these years back). Because it was only a short clip of a longer set up. For a long running show, a progressive long running show, it was a hints here and there. I honestly want to say this was 2-3 episodes set up. Buffy’s reaction is very much of that time, freak out don’t talk about it and then just accept.
You absolutely HAVE TO watch the Sex life of college girls! Renee Rapp is something like the new (gay) pop icon btw… so she‘s definitely worth to be checked out! I’ve already acquired tickets for a concert of hers next year :) Much love from Germany xx
I really like how there are different coming out scenes, and good ideas for new shows too. I especially liked the last one which I can really relate to. Thank you for all the effort you put into these videos!
the buffy scene when isolated like that is pretty weak but it's a good story as a whole especially since at the time they were still censoring lesbian relationships not even allowing them to kiss or hold hands or be sexual. it's okay for it to not be your cup of tea but the tea you do like exists because of the trial and errors of those before :)
Buffy is one of the best shows ever, maybe out of context it's strange because it has its own flavor to it. Buffy's reaction is understandable for the time and it was just unexpected and something new for her to take in.
Oh I wish you guys had watched the other coming out scene in dead end! Its with the same character (Norma) but its her actually coming to terms with the fact that she’s Bi and talking to a gay friend about it. Its very special and longer, the conversation that they have hits deep and I really wish you guys had reacted to that one with the scene where she comes out to her mom.
Two other animated shows with really great coming out scenes are Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts and The Hollow. Both got a bit overshadowed by She-ra, which was airing at the same time as them, but they both also have two really nicely done coming out scenes. Kipo also has a very rare MLM pairing in an animated kids/family friendly show.
I came out to my mum in June which I didn’t even plan for it to be in pride month but it happened and she respected me. I am so glad that she supports me even though I knew she would since she is bisexual and my cousin is also a lesbian. But I want to thank you Lauren and Gal Pal for giving me these wonderful videos to watch and give me confidence to finally come out to my mum. Thank you so much and I wish you both the best future ahead of you ❤
it's interesting to assume that awkward acting = bad acting, when the awkwardness is deliberate and the scene conveyed exactly what it was trying to convey: a character freaking out, being called on the fact that she's freaking out because she's acting weird and awkward, and denying it because she knows she shouldn't be weird about it. it's cool if some people's coming out experiences weren't awkward, but i think it's pretty normal for them to be. buffy's journey is a little like the dad in love, simon just without the toxic masculinity; both don't know how to react and make it weird initially, even though they're not actually homophobic, and then later they process better and are able to better support their loved ones.
I love Heartbreak High! It was on Netflix cuz I watch Chloe Hayden's RUclips, and luckily in the US, it was available on Netflix. I'm excited to see where S2 goes. All the actors are phenomenal!
Not really sure what you didn't like about the acting in Buffy. Perhaps its due to your unfamiliarity w/ how their characters generally behave. That episode is called "New Moon Rising".
to be honest, I just found the acting poor:( it didn’t feel real / I could see through the acting of both actors, but particularly buffy. but i can appreciate the impact the scene would’ve had at the time for the lgbt community!
I think the most heartbreaking part of the stranger things Will scene is when Johnathan (Will’s older brother) looks in the mirror with a sad expression because he understands what Will is saying even though Mike is obvious.💔
In the original pitch deck for Stranger Things, Will was written and pitched as gay! I highly recommend reading it if your into film production or Stranger Things
I would love for you two to react to Elena's coming out in One day at a time. She comes out to her mom, her abuela and her dad (later). I love this show, really heartwarming. Hope you'll react to it !
I CANNOT RECOMMEND ENOUGH THAT YOU WATCH DEAD END: PARANORMAL PARK!! Not only is the plot just super duper fun (these two teens work at a haunted amusement park), but the representation is SO GOOD!! The two main characters are Barney, a Jewish gay trans boy (that one means a lot to me as a trans boy), and Norma (the girl you reacted to), an Indian-American autistic bi girl. It’s such a fun show with excellent rep, and you should totally watch it!
Fun fact: i ordered one of your shirts, the one with the girls kissing (btw it's so cute). It may finally be time to come out. Update: The shirt is top tier cuteness, but I did not come out. Also i'm pretty sure at least one of my parents would not support me.
I identify as asexual, and I kinda view the metaphor in the last scene a bit differently. It’s true that a feast has the connotation of being appealing, whereas she doesn’t want to have sex with anyone. But I imagine that she perceives sex as something she should want, and before this scene, she doesn’t realize that it’s okay not to want it. Therefore, there are a bunch of “appealing” options, but she doesn’t want any of them. I don’t know that she is saying that she sees others as objectively attractive, so much as she sees others who, based on those around her and what she’s seen growing up, she should be attracted to. I dunno, that’s just my two cents. Hopefully all that makes sense lol.
There’s actually more scenes from dead end paranormal park! Earlier in the episode you watched, Norma comes out to Logs, and the main character Barney comes out to Norma in episode two and I recommend you watch both of them!
I just realise why I was so involved with darrren x cash. The full time I was like "what's so difficult about beeing together without sex?" Now I know I'm ace 😅 also the ace scene in sex ed is so much more better than in my memory, maybe I will use it/parts for my future coming outs (Pls note I'm not native english speaker)
That scene from Schitt’s Creek was… interesting. Guess that’s a good way of saying you’re pan without actually *saying* you’re pan. That was comedic and definitely got the point across.
For a part 3: on a RUclips channel called Brat Tv, called Chicken Girls, Season 5 episode 10 at 5:20 into the episode. Rooney comes out as Bisexual to her best friend Birdie. Or Season 5, episode 7 at 10:45 into the episode. Rooney comes out to her sister Quinn. This means alot to a lot of people cuz this was the first coming out scene on this RUclips channel in one of there shows. I ship these two best friends and recently in a spin-off they kissed.
If you make a part 3 of this video, I would love to see Alyssa's coming out scene to her mom in The Prom! It makes me cry every time I watch it but the film is so underrated 🥲
For a part 3, continuing on the ace coming outs, I'd love for you to do Todd's ace coming out scenes throughout BoJack Horseman, great ace representation!

We love Buffy the vampire slayer, so glad u did it, one of the most progressive shows of that time period. Also willow and tara weren't even the fist LGBTQ+ characters in the show, there was a guy named Larry🖤🖤🏳🌈
One day at a time is my favourite coming out scene especially when Elena end, Lydia (grandmother) scene if you have a part three should react to that one
Buffy mitigating circumstances: 1. The style of Buffy was half comedy, and Joss Whedon is famous for juxtaposing emotionally weighty moments with goofiness. The audience is supposed to take a break from the tension laughing at Buffy before the scene turns serious again. 2. Buffy's character arc at that point had to do with starting college and feeling like everything was changing. She felt overwhelmed like she couldn't keep up. This was another change, which is why she's freaking out. It shocked her because: 3. Willow had been super in love with her boyfriend Oz. He had left to find a cure for being a werewolf, so he could be with Willow safely. Buffy was expecting Willow to be excited that he was back just a few months later, supposedly cured. She didn't know that Willow was falling for their new friend Tara.
Loved this video as always! There are some scenes in call the midwife with a character called Patsy who is with a woman called Delia, it's set in the 1960s and is really good!
If you do anymore videos like this you should do the insatiable (Bob and Bob or Bonnie coming out to Patty) and teenage bounty hunters (sterling coming out to Blair) Oh and I really love the rating system you had on the first reacting to coming out scenes video where one of the ratings was directed by a straight man😂
it makes a big difference seeing all this pride-friendly stuff on here. the community didn't have this 20 yrs ago, it was easy to feel alone asp for ppl who weren't out. all the love ☺️❤️
My favorite coming out story to this day is still Santana Lopez from glee, it was heartbreaking and rewatching even more, because of the actress' passing. Please react to that one, if you haven't yet. Aside from that my favorites are Simon from love, Simon and Zoë Rivas from degrassi next class.

I’ve already acquired tickets for a concert of hers next year :)
Much love from Germany xx
I really like how there are different coming out scenes, and good ideas for new shows too. I especially liked the last one which I can really relate to. Thank you for all the effort you put into these videos!
will’s coming out scene broke me 😪
(also, am i the only one that thinks she really looks like a younger version of linda cardellini lmao 😭)
the buffy scene when isolated like that is pretty weak but it's a good story as a whole especially since at the time they were still censoring lesbian relationships not even allowing them to kiss or hold hands or be sexual. it's okay for it to not be your cup of tea but the tea you do like exists because of the trial and errors of those before :)
@@laurenelloise Definitely give the episode, or even the show, a chance since both actresses' performances are still being revered to this day.
I don’t know if you did it because it’s a bunch of scenes but elena in one day at a time is really good, her grandma reaction is my favorite
I love Love, Simon so much. My favorite scene is the one with the mum in the living room, when they talk the first time after his coming out
The opener still has me cackling 😂🎉
what did we eat for breakfast that day? 😅
i love the the scene from pose the boyfriend was right to put his foot down after his mom insulted his girl like that
Another one from Dead End Paranormal Park is Barney coming out as trans!
Also you should do Raj’s coming out from Total Drama!
Love the series!! :))
Anne With an E is the show I’ve watched the most times. Lost count actually. I absolutely love it.
The “you 🫵 watch every video” really called me out there
I would love for you two to react to Elena's coming out in One day at a time. She comes out to her mom, her abuela and her dad (later). I love this show, really heartwarming.
Hope you'll react to it !
Wasn’t expecting part 2 I’m so happy now 😁
surprise!!! hheheh
Yesss i love this series so much. For pt 3 could you do warrior nun?? Beatrice’s coming out scene is so cute and always makes me tear up
As an asexual lesbian, I feel seen with two of those scenes, especially the last one! :)
I love Anne with an E sm and I'm so happy it's apart of this video because no one ever talks about itt
The sex lives one feels like one of the realest ive ever seen - so good
7:40 *The movie you were talking about was Alex Strangelove, which actually came out in the same year as Love, Simon.*
I'm shocked the coming out scene that's on kipo and the age of Wonderbeast isn't on here 😭 it's pretty good
im literally bawling my eyes out rn at the love, simon scene
To be fair, in Buffy, they do acknowledge that she actually did freak out a bit, later in the same episode. That was just the first scene 🤷
Fun fact: i ordered one of your shirts, the one with the girls kissing (btw it's so cute). It may finally be time to come out.
Update: The shirt is top tier cuteness, but I did not come out. Also i'm pretty sure at least one of my parents would not support me.
good luck dude! hope people are supportive :)
@@valentinatupi4966Aww, thank you.
Nawwww 🥰🫶💖 thanks so much for supporting me!! I hope you loveeeee it! And wishing you all the best for when you are ready and comfortable! 🌈
I'm so happy for you. I hope it goes well.
i also like Shameless where ian comes out to fiona cuz its a very simple but effective type of vibe
I love your vids!! I'm a lesbian and you have helped me SO much! Thank you and keep up the good work!!
ahhh thank you, i will!! and im so happy to hear thisss
Love your reactions! In case there is a next video, I suggest Mickey's coming out in Shameless.
eee thanks! im writing this one down!
omg yess! debbie & ian too
I identify as asexual, and I kinda view the metaphor in the last scene a bit differently.
If you guys do a part 3 I would love your reaction to the asexual coming out scene in legends of tomorrow, and the few coming out scenes in ted lasso
You should 100% watch Sex Lives of College Girls! So good!
Maybe this will be our next show we watch 👀
I just realise why I was so involved with darrren x cash. The full time I was like "what's so difficult about beeing together without sex?" Now I know I'm ace 😅 also the ace scene in sex ed is so much more better than in my memory, maybe I will use it/parts for my future coming outs
(Pls note I'm not native english speaker)
Not me crying at over half of these and my gf not knowing what to do lol
YESSSS another video, your videos make me so so happy!!
Yayayaya I'm so glad! 💖💖
I just started watching your channel and I already love it! Your content is amazing and your channel is such a nice and safe place for me. Thankyou😊
Thank you so much!! and aww welcome to the fam! this makes me super happy to hear this 🥰
@@laurenelloise🥰🥰
That scene from Schitt’s Creek was… interesting. Guess that’s a good way of saying you’re pan without actually *saying* you’re pan. That was comedic and definitely got the point across.
POSE IS SUCH A GOOD SHOW 😭😭💔💔
For a part 3: on a RUclips channel called Brat Tv, called Chicken Girls, Season 5 episode 10 at 5:20 into the episode.
I know I'm late, but I love Will Byers so much and Noah is such an incredible actor! I know it's going to destroy me when he actually comes out in s5.
Yay 😁 new videoooo!!! Love the animal crossing pillow 🙃
Yewwwww! Also you noticed! My sis got it for me last Xmas 💜
so excited to watch this video, thanks! and you should definitely do yellowjackets next!
yesss!! ooo okay ill write that one down! tysm for the suggestion!

Yes!! I love Dead End so much! It sucks that Netflix has to cancel it.
oh noo what!? :( it seems like such a cute show though!
There's something so special about seeing people come out, I can feel the weight being lifted from their shoulders or something 🌈💕
YAY I NEEDED THIS TONIGHT
THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY TO KNOWWW
I’m Australian and your videos helped me realised I’m lesbian at 12
We love Buffy the vampire slayer, so glad u did it, one of the most progressive shows of that time period. Also willow and tara weren't even the fist LGBTQ+ characters in the show, there was a guy named Larry🖤🖤🏳🌈
We will never run out of pride coming out scenes, and thats a fact.
You need to react to The Last Of Us coming out!!
thats a good fact though! im so excited with all the newer coming out scenes, a lot are done so well! imma write that one down!
it's a game coming out but it counts right?
This video was amazing. I just wanted to let you know that Darren from Heartbreak High uses they/them pronouns as they are non-binary :)
oh my mistake, I should’ve remembered since I did watch this series. thank you for reminding me! 🫶
@@laurenelloise you did say that you had watched it so I figured that it was just an honest mistake 😊
One day at a time is my favourite coming out scene especially when Elena end, Lydia (grandmother) scene if you have a part three should react to that one
So in the defense of Buffy, it was directed by Joss Wedon, it was in a time when being out, wasn't really allowed
you have to watch th coming out scene from Rise Of The Pink Ladies, i sobbed
Also Derry Girls
Buffy mitigating circumstances:
It shocked her because:
A show I really suggest is Everything Sucks. One of the main characters Kate comes out a few times throughout the show
A lot of other scenes from Sex Education can be included ^^
yeah Adam coming out to Eric & his mum, Ola to herself and Adam, even Cal dropping their pronouns on Jackson & Viv
If you do anymore videos like this you should do the insatiable (Bob and Bob or Bonnie coming out to Patty) and teenage bounty hunters (sterling coming out to Blair)
Oh and I really love the rating system you had on the first reacting to coming out scenes video where one of the ratings was directed by a straight man😂
I’d love if you two would make a video about aroace. This identity needs more representation
aroace specifically or aro and/or aces in general?
14:44
this part was so funny had to watch it twice
Ahahahha🙈🙈🙈
it makes a big difference seeing all this pride-friendly stuff on here. the community didn't have this 20 yrs ago, it was easy to feel alone asp for ppl who weren't out. all the love ☺️❤️
Just so you know, that intro totally made me smile and instantly hooked me into watching the whole video.
Wow that one where the guy comes out as asexual is really good. Too bad I don’t have Netflix because honestly I really loved that scene you played.
Oh I am _SO_ in love with you two; exceptionally happy to be a new *#Subscriber* 🥰❤️
❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜🩷🏳️🌈🌈
dead end is ADORABLE you should watch it!!!
