I liked what you said about the mistakes thing. It reminded me of what my High School art teacher told us. He said that artists don't make mistakes because those "mistakes" can be used to finish the piece. It was one of those don't view it as a mistake but something to work from.
@@ArtistJane I wish my art teacher had been as generous with my 'mistakes', rather than being so critical that it's taken me till my sixties to pick up a pencil again! I have a 24 set of Polychromos, plus their aqua pencils, and have just treated myself to a tin of 24 Derwent aquas. Thanks for your demos, I've found them most informative.
I love Holbeins and prismacolors. For someone with arthritis in my hands, these 2 brands are the easiest to use due to their creaminess and ease of lay down.
They are sold open stock from Japan. go to wakuwaku, com they speak/read English. Order then they email an invoice which includes a service fee ( common in Japan, even if you live there) they also calculate postage via airmail then make the calculation in your currency. They pack your pencils very well in a lovely box (also typical when buying anything in Japan ). The service is exceptional .
you are a great artist: D I can ask a question please You have used the colored pencils Caran d'Ache lumince? If I could say to use if you are better than Faber Castell and prismacolor? because I think the lumince and these holbein you have, they seem to have the same quality but I feel that lumince are more effective. I hope to answer this question that I have for a long time please. In advance much I appreciate your review of these so pretty lapices as Holbein certainly some are my favorites too: D you spend a nice evening greetings: D
Hey there! I'll be covering more about different colored pencils in the future! I have used and used to own Luminance - they are amazing. They are the best wax based pencils on the market in my opinion. They are not better than Faber Castell Polychromos, but I do think they're better than Prismacolors. Thank you!
I believe that you can also order these pencils directly from Amazon Japan. They're almost $100 cheaper there than the price listed on Amazon US (or they were when I looked a couple of weeks ago). I'm sure the international shipping cost would eat into that price difference a bit, but it may still be cheaper than going through Amazon US!
Wow! That's a fantastic idea! I will keep my eye on Amazon Japan for anyone else that's interested here. Shipping costs can be monstrous at times but if people are persistent and can wait it out, sometimes you'll find lower shipping costs. I believe mine I bought (on eBay) had only $10 in shipping + $20 customs fee. It was a better option than some who were charging $50! Yikes! Good call!
Love this! Also, it was so refreshing to hear someone else feels the electric sharpener eats pencils and prefers manual. It's a very unpopular opinion but I am one of the manual only people too.
You can get open stock of the Holbein pencils, depending on the store. Texas Art Supply in Houston carries them-they don’t have the full set, and I just bought the individual pencils in the display over time until I had the full set. There’s also a couple of other art supply stores who have them.
WOW! Was I glad to find this about Holbein Pencils, since I recently purchased the set of 150. However, I don't draw or do art on my own, I love to color in the adult coloring books. I have tried using these gorgeous pencils a little bit in them without much success and I think I really need to learn how to shade and blend with them. I am sincerely hoping you will be doing coloring book pages too, do you think you will? I have Faber Castell Polys and Prismacolors too, and like them also, but, I am really wanting to get experience in using the Holbeins, so Im really hoping you will demonstrate more! And. by the way, I'm a southpaw too! And, I hope I don't sound cheap, but, although I am in love with my new, beautiful set of Holbein Pencils, I hate to waste them by just experimenting with them, lol. Since they are so soft, they do wear down fast, and I won't be able to purchase another set for a long time!!! So, any tips, examples, and actual demonstrations with them will be fabulous! Thankyou for this and hope there is more to come!
+Nancy Kirk You must be psychic, Nancy. I have a colored pencil demo for using Holbein and high quality brands in adult coloring books. I use a trick with odorless mineral spirits to blend after I layer. You also may want to check out the Sarah Colors Official channel - she has a layering demo on coloring pages with high end colored pencils that is pretty awesome! She's also on Instagram if you have an account there. She's amazing! Stay tuned to my channel as well for more Holbein related videos :)
Ouch ! I must be cheap. I’d never use such expensive pencils in a colouring book. Prismacolour pencils are just a hint above a standard child’s school pencil. Get some good paper and practice swatches using your Holbein pencils. It’s not a waste, you will learn so much about colour your technique light and dark shadows. Or trace a picture onto good paper and work on pencil shadow with mineral oil.
Faber Castell classic pencil is one of my favourite. Inexpensive, for me as a 14 years old non art class student. it's budget friendly and so easy to grab in any store
As a lefty myself I can relate to jour problems :-).. Thanks for sharing your tips and experiences, I definitely feel enriched and your art is amazing. You also make me itch to try to get some Holbein pencils, I have used the Polychromos pencils for decades but the Holbeins really appear to layer even better. Greetings from Germany!
+Robert Heilmeier Thank you so much! Very happy to share my knowledge and glad you can benefit from it. Being a lefty definitely has its advantages and disadvantages! I usually have to use a safety sheet underneath my hand so I don't smear anything. I love the Polys so much but the Holbeins as well are a fantastic product in my opinion.
Southpaw Creative Arts You are most welcome! Same here with the safety sheet et cetera.. I have to say that only after a while, although i had read your name beforehand, it dawned on me that you were drawing with your left hand, and then I realized that this was probably because it looked so natural to my eyes, being used to draw with my left hand too. I have sometimes noticed a - how shall I say? - inexplicable slight queasiness or discomfort when watching righthanded artist draw, until I realized that this was probably due to a completely subconscious expectation that this couldn´t possibly work out :-), almost feeling my poor right hand to cramp up with the burden of achieving an intricacy of motion or eye-to-hand coordination it wasn´t meant to carry in the first place. Being lefthanded, though not really a big deal in everyday life still sometimes lets you perceive things a bit different, I guess. I hope you can somehow relate to my musings :-) Greetings and best wishes from a fellow artist and lefty!
first of all thank you for doing a video with holbein!! i think you are the first that talks about them.. now i have a few questions.. 1.how is the white pencil? is it opaque? 2.do you prefer them over polychromes? 3.what blend better? polychromes or holbein? (without colourless blender) 4.are there a lot of skin tones? hope you can answer these questions :)
You're welcome and thank you for the questions! I'm going to do a comparison video in The future, but for short answers: 1. White is opaque, Soft white is even brighter and whiter. 2. I like them only slightly better than Polychromos. 3. I believe it's a tie. 4. Color names aren't labeled with a name that literally says "_____ flesh" like polys, but there are colors that I'd consider to use for flesh tones.
Yay another leftie ! :D Good idea to keep a piece of paper under your hand, I always end up with a multi-colored part from the little finger down to the wrist and it's so easy to accidentaly transfer it to the drawing. As for pens I only have the Marco Raffiné bought from ebay but I'm looking in to buying artist-pencils and go over all the reviews I can find (which is how I found your channel. Looking forward to seeing more videos from you ! :)
Thank you! You're absolutely right about putting a piece of paper under your hand in order not to get pigment on it. I may do a video on art tips for lefties! Enjoy! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I have this set and they are really great and high quality. I think Polychromos would complement this set nicely for detail and line work. I look forward to seeing more demos with them.
I believe you're absolutely right. Polychromos or Pablo pencils would be a great combo to work with these and I have combined them in the past. Some have claimed that Holbein pencils don't play well with other brands, but in my experience they have worked just fine with other pencils.
i am one of those that finds that holbeins do not play well with other brands. if i am going to colour a drawing with holbeins, i don’t use anything else.
I appreciate your review. I also am a colored pencil artist so I purchased some of these. I was disappointed. There is no way to now how long the color will last because they did not have them tested so as an artist I can not trust that they said that they did I their own in company test. Colored pencil artists association has done their own testing and it is scary if a professional artist had sold a painting made from these. For those who don’t mind that’s cool. They did not blend with any of my five other brands. They looked like an oil slick and I sent them back. The few I forgot to send back I gave away. They are not professional artist pencils but the price is. My recommendation is to see if Holbein allows them to be tested (costs a lot) or acquiesces and sells them even less than Prismas. Then either one could save a lot of money or just wait for the Derwent Lightfast to go on sale again as they do frequently for $2 something at Blick’s Art.
Thank you for your demo using these pencils , I live in New Zealand and had not heard of them till today. I use a combination of Color Inks and Color Pencils ( prismacolor) which I had to import. I do Find however that they do get a wax buildup, but have not had issues with the lead breaking as many people do. I must see if I can get hold of the Holbein Pencils here, thank you again
I know you said you like the Holbein pencils because they blend so well, but I read two or three reviews on Amazon where people said said they didn't like them that a drawback was that the Holbeins *didn't* blend well. Could that be because of the paper they were using?
+Martha Spizziri It absolutely can be a contributing factor. They blend well on strathmore colored pencil & toned paper (as demonstrated in the video), and I've found they work very well on Bristol vellum/board as well. It can also b dependent on the artist's capabilities to blend too.
I am a pro artist, and I’m choosing the disagree with you. I’ve had a wonderful experience with them and have had excellent results. Everyone’s experience is subjective. Everyone’s blending skills are different. Anyways, at the end of the day, they’re just colored pencils.
I don't go by reviews of non-professional reviewers. I found that most wouldn't know pencil quality from coloring with the little kitty gifts in the litterbox.
Thank you for this wonderful video, it was really informative. My favourite coloured pencils are Prismacolor and I really like Lyra. Best wishes Ann in South Australia.
+Ann Grice Thank you so much, Ann! I'm very happy you could benefit from it. I love Lyra too! So much wonderful pigment! I only wish they came in a 120 set. Have a blessed day!
Ann Grice thanks for the quick reply! And, a big thumbs up for your last comment.....more Holbein videos coming, stay tuned! I'll check out the video you suggested also, thanks again! 👍🏼
I know this was done 5 years ago, but I love my Holbein colored pencils. Blicks in the US not carries them. Watched your recent video on the lightfast document from Japan, thank you for that
I really like the Steadtler Noris pencils. The lead is REALLY hard but, they layer really well. I just bought Marco Raffine pencils and those are slightly softer, which is easier on my fingers and wrist but, they don't layer as well. They have a rich tone though which I love.
I like having the ability to layer personally :) I have some Staedtler but they are not the noris. I have the ergosoft, which are soft of course, but don't layer tremendously well.
Thank you so much for doing this wonderful demo! I'm gonna see if I can't get my hands on these wonderful pencils! I've been using prismacolors up to now and find they do give me a waxy build up. I have never had issues with lead breaking tho... Again, thank you so much for this beautiful review!
+Laura Philpot thank you for watching and commenting, Laura! Very happy you're enjoying the channel's videos. I believe everyone is having similar but various experiences with Prismas, but I believe you can achieve a softer, more realistic look with oil based pencils like these!
Southpaw Creative Arts No problem, I absolutely love your channel and your artwork! Like I said, I'm gonna try to get these pencils. Maybe for Christmas? I can only wish! Until then I can do jobs around the house to earn money, but I love what you did with these pencils.
Antoinette Cantu i would say if you are going to mix them, try layering the prismas on top as much as possible, since the wax will be the factor that prevents proper layering.
Hey, thanks a lot for this video, even though this is from 2016. I live in the UAE and saw an ad for these pencils online. So wanted to know if they are as good as their price. I use Lyra polycolors ever since I started with cp. have you tried them? Also wanted to say I appreciate your commentary - it was relaxing and direct. Most artist youtubers either complain incessantly or apologize for stating their opinions. One guy for eg, I kid you not, said he didn't want to say whether a particular colored pencil was wax or oil based! So thank you for your easy going approach. Liked and subscribed😊
Hi Jane, came upon your channel and enjoyed very much. Thank you for these wonderful videos. I only have prismacolor and staedtler pencils so far. Like them both for different qualities. Looking at reviews for honest evaluations of a really good set! Leaning toward Holbein but there’s that no replacements thing, grrr! Lots of money for an object you can’t try first.
I haven't tried Stonehenge yet but I have intentions of getting it and I've heard great things! I will definitely order some! Thank you for the recommendation. I appreciate it :)
Fabriano has a gorgeous black paper that I love to use. The colors just pop. I went to Amazon and the American distributor does not carry the Holbein 😢 so I went to eBay but am having issues with my account ugh! Thank you for your color pencil videos. I am taking a break from painting and am enjoying color pencil again.
Seeing all these wonderful demos makes me really mad that I bought the prismacolors and I'm stuck with them because I don't have the money for Holbein or Polychromos.
thank you so much for this video, really you're amazing !!! I wanna buy these hopefully in the future, but right now they're super expensive for me, (I've only used prismacolor so far, I love them but I want to try other brands) ^^
Yes ma’am it is! It’s under “Touched By Fire Art & Music Photography”. I wish I would’ve just put it under my name. However, I’m mostly active on Instagram under “artistjaneb”. I hope that helps 🙂
Yes, it’s very soft and a little crumbly. Have you tried an electric sharpener that has an automatic sensor to stop sharpening after a certain point to prevent breakage?
Amezing work! Thanks fot this video, it really helpful. Can i gif you a tip about color? I love Indigo to make a nicer black. But if you use ultramarine and umber you can get a nice nature black to.
+Helena Hsrmes Thank you! I love creating your own blacks with darker colors. Seems to give the shadows much more depth! So happy you found the video useful. ☺️
I prefer Koh-I-Noor (and have a review on my channel), but either will do! I’ve had Lyra and they’re excellent as well. They need a better shade range with their pinks/purples imo, but they’re still great.
@@ArtistJane The Lyras, what few I've tried, act like crayons. Personally, I hate the way crayons lay down. I far prefer a harder, smoother wax drawing medium. But that's me. I use a bunch of colored pencil brands, depending on the kind and purpose of picture I want to do.
Zodiac Queen that is my question, as well. Art doesn’t come naturally to me, so I study and research. I’m trying to figure out the best way to use the colorless blender.
Typically, yes. I realized I did that as a burnishing technique. I decided to use a lighter hand in later projects because the heavy handed ness can really cramp up the hands easily. Love your RUclips name, btw!
@@ArtistJane 😀 aww thank you! And thank you for responding to my question. I have a hard time with color pencils so I was watching videos on how to get a smooth layer at the end. It seems like burnishing is the way to go but I have noticed the same thing, that it would hurt my hand a bit. I'm not a fan of using solvents though!
Bonjour je vous remercie pour cette vidéo qui me les as fait les achetés. pouvez-vous m'aider à à replacer les crayons dans le bon ordre j'ai eu un petit soucis avec le 1er étages merci beaucoup
also, you mentioned blenders. I have no problems with the colorless blending pencil...maybe I push too hard sometimes but I'm pretty confident using them. the Derwent one leaves a greyish hue. but the oms I just can't do it. I've tried and tried and it just never works like I see people using it on here. I have the dove one I think it's called and I have gamsol. I've tried paint brushes. that does little to nothing for me. I've tried with various layers of pencil and still nothing. it's like I am using water almost. I really see little to no change which is not the case when I watch videos, they just apply the oms and likragic it blends. I've tried putting it in my aqua brush as well, no go. I've tried all kinds of blending stumps. now that is a different problem. it will move the pigment but I usually get white spots or streaks even when I had up to 5 layers of pencil or as little as one. I keep trying but I just can't get it. I've used the prismacolor blending pencil as well. that has worked the best but I'm always scared it will make the color bleed through in my coloring books. I am just having a lot of trouble in this area and I've tried so many times and watched so many videos. you said you use oms so I was hoping you have some trick or technique that may help me. thanks...oh and one I'd the questions I asked you answered. no open stock in USA.

Thank you!
+Laura Philpot Thank you! I hope it works out well for you and you can get some pencils soon! Thank you for watching. I appreciate your kind words!
My favorite are Holbein, second is Holbein and probably number 3 is Holbein. Nothing else compares ‐ NOTHING.
You’re 100% right on. If only they came open stock. I’m not sure what is happening when people say they don’t blend well. They blend like a dream.
how do these pencils play with a wax based pencil like prismacolor? and can you get these open stock?
Antoinette Cantu i would say if you are going to mix them, try layering the prismas on top as much as possible, since the wax will be the factor that prevents proper layering.
Love my Pluqis 50 set. They don't make them anymore. Glad I have them and my 48 Creyarts.
Hi there! Hold on to your hat, I’ll be posting some big news on the Holbein pencils very soon!
Artist Jane Bush thank you Jane, I’m not in a hurry and I value your opinions. 🙏
I'm curious about the source art. Is there somewhere I can see it? I would love to follow along cause I loved watching you draw this!
Oh this was a complete original from me, so there was no source art ☺️if you send a Dm, I’ll show you the finished piece and what it was inspired by.
can you post a painting of yours, from beginning to the end ?
much more interesting to show your technique !
Yes in the future I will!
Have you true n Stonehenge paper? I love the way it holds many layers of colored pencil, and how well they blend very smooth.
Thank you Heather, I appreciate it! Well, hopefully you can get your eBay account straightened out and have better luck there!
I did Jane! It took an hour with an eBay customer service rep but my Holbein Pastel 50 set is on its way! Sooo excited! 😁
Awesome! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I recommend Polychromos if you want something close to these but have more availability! 😄
+Southpaw Creative Arts Yeah I actually am going to be buying them soon x) so exited !! thaanks
Since this video is over 4 years old, is your FB page still active? I looked for it there but couldn’t find it. Thanks
Yes ma’am it is! It’s under “Touched By Fire Art & Music Photography”. I wish I would’ve just put it under my name. However, I’m mostly active on Instagram under “artistjaneb”. I hope that helps 🙂
where did you get your case for your pencils does fit them all
+Melba W I eventually got the Derwent Carry All. It holds 120 but you can purchase extra sleeves for it on Amazon.
Thanks
How do you sharpen the soft white (OP 501)? Maybe it's just mine but it crumbles no matter what I use. Even a knife. Maybe I'm doing it wrong 🤷♀️
i love holbein😣💖💖
Which Polycolors? Lyra's or Koh-I-Noor? Good tips and demo.
Where is the link to 'your favorite Top 3 favorite colored pencils?'

There ya go :)
@@ArtistJane Thank SO much. I have ordered Holbeins and polychromos. Coming any day. At moment, I had Prismacolors.
Hello, can you please provide a link to the reference photo?
I don’t have a reference photo. It came from within my vision ☺️
I cant afford what you use but I love f.castell polys.
Have you ever tried blending colored pencils with a colorless copic marker? If you have... what is your opinion?
+Maia Westh I have not actually! I will consider that for a future video about blending though!
Please make a video on a portrait
What are poly colors?
When you use the colorless blender, do you apply heavy pressure??
What brand is this pencil case
The one featured in this video is the Derwent Carry all
also, you mentioned blenders.
For al the people in europe you can order de holbein pencils in sets or open stock by splendith.nl :)
Thank you for this info!
Do you have an Instagram account or will ever create one? Thanks!
+Mike B. Yes! @artistjaneb on Instagram
