To cover a few common "debunk' attempts that I constantly see:
*"These aren't level 9s!"
See the prior linked video in the description showing the replay data for all the matches.
*"This was done in Training mode! He's controlling the CPUs!"
Why are there so many people that don't know how Training mode works? If this was done in Training, there wouldn't be any match starts, stock counts, match ends, timers, nor replays. Just boot up the game yourself and try replicating this video in Training.
*"Luigi jumped against Wario when he got knocked off the stage!"
See that spring on Windy Hill Zone? You touch it, it bounces you automatically, nevermind the fact Luigi went way higher than he would with any jump and the very obvious spring sound that plays upon touching it.
*"Level 9 CPUs read inputs! If you don't do anything, they don't know what to do!"
Not an accusation, but it's a common explanation for this video that I see people keep passing around that is false. First, the AI does not "read your inputs", it's a myth from the Brawl days that has been debunked, AI just have frame-perfect reactions. Second, doing nothing doesn't "screw up" the AI, they fight just as competently (or incompetently) as before. What makes this video possible is simply the AI having terrible stage awareness, the act of doing nothing itself has no impact on the AI's play, in fact it would be much easier to make the AI self-destruct or get hit by stage hazards if you were actively playing.

supposebly part of why they keep dying has to do with the fact that the AI actually uses your inputs to help read what you're going to do. When Luigi doesnt put in any inputs the AI gets confused and cant really read what the player is planning, making them slip up really badly by over and under correcting itself since its having trouble guessing the players intent.
But what if you say no?

It seems the major oversight in programming the AI which makes this meme possible was that they weren't taught to understand and predict stage state changes and avoid stage obstacles. Notice how many times a computer is on a platform that just stops existing and that results in their death.
Also, they didn't program any preservation into them on borderless stages (they'll literally walk off because they don't see the danger of doing that).
Both oversights make for good design lessons.
ookazi1000 yeah. But I just honestly think that the AI are the slightest, to the least, rigged. The king dedede part caught me off guard. But the one after with diddy kong made me choke on my food. However, link literally chose to let Luigi win, we walked to the platform edge, jumped off, tried to get up on the side (which he could’ve grabbed), and fell into the void below.
It's debatable whether it was an oversight. The goal was to make the bots effective in standard gameplay. And getting bots to read, understand, and predict the behavior of the environment they're in is a significant cognitive challenge, compared to making them jump around a lot and be sensitive to the player's movements. It's gonna take a while before they apply deep learning networks to video game bots. (although not too long, I hope)
@@MishaShivers That's fair. It could be hard to do, and it's possible the smash team at nintendo had "bots understand moving environments" as an item on their magical christmasland wishlist, and they just didn't get around to implementing it.
But, the borderless stage walk-off though is definitely an oversight. The AI should definitely have a "will executing this move kill me by causing me to walk out of bounds | if yes, do something else" check added on those stages.

I think the techniques that the CPU players "know" are primarily effective techniques when a player is moving around in standard gameplay. They're not making decisions based on considering probable outcomes, they have a series of decision making paths that involve jumping around in dynamic ways - because that's what generally works the best in most situations. So yes, Luigi's lack of movement is affecting their behavior, because their technique relies on changing player movement in order to be effective.
Thank you for actually trying to explain the reasoning behind the A.I. behavior instead of making the same stupid jokes about Luigi being "teh ultimate battlez boy" that everybody else in the comments is making.

I like to Imagine that Luigi does the martial arts thing where he lets his enemies hit him in such a way that he takes the minimum amount of damage possible, luring them into a false sense of security when in reality he is setting them up for a situation where the environment will kill them by using minute movements at the point of impact to reposition them without the enemy realising they have been repositioned. I also like to believe that in the cases where they just kinda kill themselves it's because he gives them a look that makes them question the situation they're in and forces them to realize through "mental gymnastics" that the only logical maneuver is suicide.
Some things I noticed:
- Skyworld fucks up the character AI
- Characters are scared of using their up+B's (or other recovery) close to the player, even if he/she doesn't do anything.
- Characters also wait too long to recover.
- Moving stages are an AI dead trap.
- Last but not least, Luigi always wins.

That and the AI can't handle the mapping on the donkey Kong classic stage at all, they're deadly afraid of the bottom corner where p2 spawns
Also the ai will try to jump to the other character (Player) through an large impenetrable surface like ground.
MisterDutch93 I also think that the AI is not "prepared" to battle someone who doesn't move. For example, they take their time to get close to Luigi (obviously because he is also terrifying), using the shield and dodge several times. And yeah, the guy from the video also used specific maps where AI usually dies at a near point to the beggining of the match.

Kaizo Mario is obviously made by players... Mario maker is also made by players... Never got that far in galaxy, but from what I've heard it's the hardest Mario has ever been...and it's still not as hard as, say, beating a secret boss in a final Fantasy game.

Before everyone bashes the AI, just think about how many tries he had to do to make the AI do what it did to kill themsleves. These situations are very convenient most of the time, and that would mean that he had to retry and retry countless times before getting them to murder themselves.
