I Would also add that, the way Fate treats Iskandar by showing more of his good side, is pretty similar how we treat his history as well, it's pretty common for people to remember his Victories and level headness for the time, forgetting he was often the agressor in those wars. His feats are still inspirational it is just good to keep those things in mind.

About the dogs on the CE. Diogenes was the most famous member of the cynicism philosophy, and cynicism derives its name from the Greek for dog (from Wikipedia : The term cynic derives from Ancient Greek κυνικός (kynikos) 'dog-like' and κύων (kyôn) 'dog'). Dogs and the barrel are always associated with Diogenes. There’s also another Alexander and Diogenes story that goes like this: “Alexander the Great found the philosopher looking attentively at a pile of human bones. Diogenes explained, “I am searching for the bones of your father, but cannot distinguish them from those of a slave.””

I always interpreted Alexander’s wanting to meet Nero in Septum less as “Nero Worship” more, she’s the current ruler of Rome in the proper timeline, and he wants to see if she has what it takes to correct things. Basically it didn’t matter that she was Nero Claudius, rather the “Proper Roman Emperor”

Its worth noting that historically speaking, Alexander the Great is depicted as being a slender man with black hair and heterochromatic eyes (two different colors). Obviously this depiction doesn't fit Fate's depiction, which Waver notes in Zero. These traits are instead given to Faker, who serves as his body double. Faker is entirely made up, being Hephestion's nameless sister.

A moment that stuck with me was how in Fate/Zero, it's easy to just roll with Iskandar's enthusiasm and just nod along when he cheerfully talks about his grail wish, but then you stop and think about how that would realistically play out. He'd probably end up starting the Fate equivalent of WW3. Sure, he'd probably throw some fun parties and there would definitely be some people willing to fight for him but worldwide conquest is a lot larger scale these days, nukes exist now and people aren't as willing to glorify present day imperialism. Then there's the political mess of Alexander the Great walking into the Balkans before any of the conquering even starts and all the magi who try to destroy all threats to their secrecy. It gives the impression that the way Iskandar's charisma and force of personality obscures the darker aspects of conquest was likely at least somewhat intentional. He's good at PR. Most of it's probably because it'd get in the way of his narrative role, though.
The other thing that stuck with me is the fantastic way F/Z used him as a foil to Artoria for her character arc. A lot of people get upset about how he called her out at the banquet but her whole deal about trying to erase her legend was something she needed to let go of. It's just that F/Z is the tragic prequel to the story where she actually completes her arc and ends up in a better place. A king who unapologetically lives life to the fullest, accepts the good and the bad of this and earned many people's respect in doing so is an excellent foil to a version of king Arthur who lived apart from others to the point of alienating them, lost their trust and wants to completely unmake what happened because of it. One problem with the scene is that his army was in parade formation instead of the Macedonian phalanx, which was famously a big part of why his army was so successful.
I don't really find Alexander's death all that mysterious relative to other things we just don't have the information to be completely sure about. People love speculating about possible assassinations of famous people but what we know points to illness. The amount of time it took him to die makes poisoning unlikely and a number of common illnesses from the time can account for his symptoms. The main suggestions seem to be malaria and typhoid, but I came across an interesting theory about GBS. The bigger mystery is his tomb, which has never been found despite many people looking for it. Lots of wild theories around that.
When I was looking up restored colors for classical statues, I found one that was depicting Alexander in a red tunic and lion cap. It's from a tomb in the royal necropolis of Sidon. I also found that Iskandar is likely derived from parsing Alexander's name as Al-iskandar in arabic, due to al being a definite article that's used as a prefix.
The whole spreading Greek culture thing just reeks of European historians' fixation with painting Greece as the origin of civilization and tendency to downplay, erase or appropriate the contributions of other cultures. Greece wasn't the only culture Alexander paid attention to in his empire and a lot of what he did in that regard seemed to be to strengthen political relations and foster a shared identity to improve his empire's longevity. It facilitated cultural exchange within it as a whole, not just introducing everyone to Greece. It's like when they assumed any culture that wrote Greek texts spoke and was culturally Greek when trade languages don't really work that way.

I'd be curious if Yurie ever had a Hephastion follow up if only to talk about Waver Case Files and the post-Iksander effect on Waver himself; tho unless it was specifically elaborated in Fate/Zero's original Novels, I won't give Gen Urobuchi any more credit as anime-only doesnt really admonish Iksanders recklessness again having both Artoria and Gil dignity his power, if not outright idolize him through Waver's arc.
Of course maybe if they were more conscious of admonished Iksander they'd emphasize his post-conquest fallout and his entire lifes work empire completely imploding internally yadda yadda so yknow maybe Gen ate the propaganda more than refute it

@@Anonlyso Artoria never really warms up to Iskandar and Gilgamesh's respect for him isn't about morality. Gil's an egotistical jerk who doesn't care about that sort of thing. A bunch of characters get exasperated by Iskandar doing things they consider reckless like barging into a duel and revealing his identity. His unconventional way of doing things has its advantages, but it also gives his opponents more to plan against him, which is a disadvantage worth considering with his limited mana. Kirei was able to exploit Artoria's dislike of him to frame him for Iri's abduction, which cost him his chariot. He also used a lot of mana dealing with Assassin and the kraken with no quick way to replenish it. He didn't win the grail war, but he arguably spent his time better leaving a lasting impression on other characters and a heroic last stand against Gilgamesh is a decent consolation prize. It's not like getting the grail would've been useful in the state it was in anyway.
As for historical examples, Fate isn't really trying to educate people about history so much as telling stories that happen to involve legendary figures. They take a lot of liberties for the sake of the story or worldbuilding and you never really get detailed accounts of people's deeds even when they're villains that can be as terrible as they want. There's only so much room to tell the story, so they focus on the parts that are relevant to the plot or the character's abilities.
When you pay attention to Iskandar's character, it's pretty clear his morals aren't what people expect these days, even if he's nicer about it than Gilgamesh. They get along because they're both unapologetic about pursuing their desires and following through on their ideals. Iskandar has no qualms taking what he wants from others and doesn't object to being called greedy or a tyrant.
Waver's arc is about finding confidence in himself and he doesn't really have the time or disposition to debate morals and history with his Servant, if he even knows enough history to do so. He's also a magus, who aren't exactly known for being moral. The culture doesn't really leave a lot of room for morals, so even the nice ones generally do questionable things to some extent. I wouldn't really expect Waver to be put off by that sort of thing when he's surrounded by people like Kayneth.
What bothers me more is how much needs to be unpacked about magi, like the colonialist aspects of casually looting historical and cultural artifacts for personal gain and that magi are continuing slavery through homunculi. There's also the nihilistic aspects of the magic system and how it basically validates some of the terrible stuff magi do. Sakura's backstory also raises some concerns about the prevalence of SA among magi but the nasuverse seems to have been toning down that aspect of the writing.
Artoria brought up the collapse of his empire, when questioning Iskandar's problem with her wish and regrets over the fall of Camelot:
"Iskandar. Your reign ended with all your heirs slain, and your empire broken up by civil war. Do you mean to say, that you have no regrets about that end?"
"None at all. Not if it came to pass by my own decisions and the considerable sacrifices of my many retainers. Its destruction was inevitable. I shall mourn it. And shed tears over it. But I shall never regret it."
      "But you-"
"Let alone undo it all! Such an act would be an insufferable insult to all those who fought and bled and died alongside me!"
Iskandar does care about what happened, but his philosophy is about living life to the fullest and accepting what happens, for better or worse. That's why his wish is to become reincarnated and pursue his conquest in the present, rather than undoing his death and the events that followed. He looks towards the future rather than dwelling in the past and the things that could've been.
On the IRL side of things, there isn't really anything Alexander could've done to prevent it. His death came at a bad time and he didn't have an heir ready to take the throne. Large empire with lots of politically ambitious people, succession crisis and rumors of assassination mean civil war while everyone interested in ruling fight over who gets to the top. Empires in general also aren't really sustainable. It's really more a matter of when they collapse than if.
In addition to the banquet itself, Iskandar also summarizes his views in his speech to his army, and his parting words to Artoria:
"Hear me! A king must live a grand life and embody his people's image of admiration! He who is worthy of all heroes' envy! And he who leads their way! That, is a king! Therefore, the king is not alone! For his will equals that of all who would follow him to his ultimate glory combined!"
"You may keep silent. Tonight was for a conversation amongst kings... but I no longer recognize you as a king, Saber. Little girl. You must wake from your sad dream and see the truth. If you don't, someday you'll lose even that modicum of pride you retain as a heroic spirit. The dream of a king you spoke of earlier is a curse and a burden which blinds and cripples you."
Iskandar isn't likeable because he's morally upstanding, he's likable because there are positive aspects to his philosophy of self-indulgence and leadership that are worth learning from and he's more personable than most of the other characters in the story. Don't go around conquering and stealing but let yourself have things and be a fully realized human being. Artoria didn't let herself really have a life, because she felt that being king meant sacrificing her humanity. It was a terrible way to live, took a toll on the people around her and led to the fall of her kingdom. She's not wrong to think that a king should serve their people but martyring herself wasn't a good way to do that.
Going through the banquet episode, I was reminded that Iskandar summons the Gordius Wheel by slashing the air, in reference to how he got it from cutting the gordian knot. Like how Medusa summons Pegasus by stabbing her neck because it was born from her blood after she was decapitated.
It slipped my mind to talk about design, so I guess I'll drop it here. There's a virgina sun on Alexander's chest. The fur trim on Iskandar's cloak is probably lion. Aside from the Heracles association, there's a mosaic depicting Alexander hunting a lion. Macedonia was one of the last parts of the European lion's range before they went extinct. Red is associated with Macedonia, which is presumably why it's such a big part of his design. The red hair and eyes also tie into his whole son of Zeus thing with how the nasuverse depicts demigods and people descended from magical beings. I like the golden accents in his design a lot better than how they went about gold with Gilgamesh.

@@taiga738 Certainly all ends up under creative licensees stretch to the end for Fate, but it still stands out, almost subversive that Urobuchi had ANY positive arc out of the Tragic Prequel:
Kayneth dies BECAUSE of his love even in cucking, Kariya's self-destruction amounts to very little and rubs in his face his love as impure etc (if I was really pushing it, Ryuunosuke going out with a smile is still way more satisfactory than everyone else "dying for nothing")
hell even just Kiritsugu's wild obsession with pragmatic heroism backfires as THE final theme and incites Fate's big incident etc..., beyond the obvious "x people have to live to start Fate/Stay Night and y can die freely", just ending with the would-be selfish villains "winning" as set-up...it actually kinda re-inforces Selfishness as virtue if only that of the 4 survivors, Kiritsugu is fucking miserable while Gil and Kirei are living it up and Waver, well he's the surprise survivor FOR carrying on Rider's will, when it could so very easily have been the exact thing that could've killed "any other foolish idealist" for extra easy tragedy that tips the Urobutcher's merciful hand
Whether it's "over-reading intent" that Rider's end leaves a dignified, if not outright positive effect in a sea of otherwise tragedy even for just Fate/Zero's story that "accepting one's selfishness as self-actualization" can be message contrast how every "self-less idealist" is so readily beat down, even just leading into the Fate/Route, that Waver lives long enough to straight up becoming El Melloi II and STILL draws motivation from Iksander just kinda exonerates and cements him as an overall positive figure pushing AGAINST Mage Society norms etc...
sure, Fate/Zero didn't need to be the "actually Alexander was a dumbass" show, but because all the philosophical opponents wound up suffering and dead pretty much makes Iksander right if not by default, than by future proxy of Waver's growth etc...

Someone may have pointed it already, but the dog in Alexander's bond CE is more a reference to Diogenes. He was the founder of the cynical ( not really in the sense we use in day-to-day talk) school of thought. Cynic come from dog in greek (Kynos), because they rejected some of society's rules and lived with, and like dogos on the streets. That is brought in the video on the anecdote of Alexander and Diogenes, where the later had no use for all of Alexander's riches and power, he just wanted to go back to enjoy the sun.

As for the diogenes thing: Diogenes was the greatest representative of the cynic school. Cynic came from the greek world for dog(wich yes, mean Genshin Impact has a character that is literally named "dog") because those philosophers rejected material goods, thinking only knowledge held any value. Diogenes took this to the extreme, to the point he was said to live like a dog, hence the school's name.
In fact, Alexander was testing his character there. He wanted to see if Diogenes would fell to the temptation if the King offered him anything he desired. Diogenes did not and this left Alex deeply impressed.

Iskandar (Adult Alexandar) in Fate has a second Noble Phantasm named Via Expugnatio. It is a weaker Noble Phantasm at rank A+ compared to Ionioi Hetairoi which is at EX rank, and it has not been depicted much in fate media. It was used only once in Fate Zero, against Artoria, which allowed him to dodge Excalibur at point blank range, and is also depicted in Fate/EXTELLA Link as one of his stronger attacks. It is basically him trampling his enemies with the Gordius Wheel at extremely high speeds using the power of Zeus.
    Spoiler:
In the Case File of Lord El Melloi, Ergo who was created through experimentation of Iskandar's body alongside Sun Wukong, Set and Oceanus (Basically Ergo is a super being who was created using Iskandar's corpse by three mage groups and has parts and powers of Sun Wukong, Set and Oceanus) inherits Via Expugnatio fron Iskandar as part of his powers, (The others being the Ruyi Jingu Bang from Sun Wukong and Per Djet from Set).

Also about obscuring the bad parts of history it at least has a lore excuse that this are more the Heroes in human record more than the people they actually were. Which is more relevant to a figure that it's taught in passing as part of ancient history and the empires of old that people that are taught because of their bad actions like Ivan the Terrible or that is much more active in the collective consciousness like Columbus and oct 12th being a holiday.

You're forgetting a *lot* of context involving Alexander's appearance in Septem. He didn't go and meet Nero because he had nothing better to do or was just fanboying that hard but was ordered by Lev Lainur to go and kill her so that Lev the United Empire can destroy the era. Alexander not really caring for Lev off his first impression of wanting immense destruction goes to meet Nero and get his own opinion of the person he was ordered to kill, and testing if she really is worthy of being a ruler of Rome.
So when Alexander lures Nero to his fort to talk to the woman, he asks her of why Nero isn't joining the United Empire to stop unnecessary death and casualties. Nero gets mad at him for calling that unnecessary, as she refuses to have her birthright as the Emperor of Rome be stripped by another, and thinks the United Empire's of ruling is too inhuman. As the people were said to be more like drones following their master rather than their own individual people. Which Nero notices due to none of them laughing and or smiling *(She says this in Part 13 of Septem)*, even it is a perfectly united and stout nation. Alexander even picked up on that as well, mentioning how the soldiers again, attack Nero like automated machinery rather than actual humans. He's not there to fanboy over Nero, even Iskandar in Extella said that he was surprised that who he thought to be a tyrant had any actual skill in combat. The point is to test Nero's resolve and light a fire inside of her so that she truly has enough to determination to go against the United Empire with the odds stacked against her and be a worthy ruler of the nation that truly fights for what they believe in. And again, Alexander doesn't like Lev and didn't want to cause deaths just for the sake of it. Along with Leonidas and Romulus within the same singularity.
*And as for your points on Boudica's apperance:* You forgot that Septem's actual leader is Lev Lainur, one of Goetia's 72 Demon Gods planning to destroy human history. As Lev summoned Romulus to be one of his generals in his goal for death, that's confirmed in Part 7 of the second singularity. And Romulus himself of course didn't want to play in the destruction of his own nation let alone the world, but couldn't go against the power of Lev Lainur. So the logistics of the situation are that a giant murderous empire worse than Rome is trying to make a new version of Rome filled with superhuman soldiers like Julius Caesar and Leonidas. Winning against Rome already could be hard for Boudica but going against that same army on steroids would be impossible by herself. Plus, again Mashu and Romani told her that the United Empire is trying to ruin the destroy the era they live in and thus Britain. So Boudica joining Nero's fight is literally the best move she can make if she cares about the future of Britain. (Not to mention she said she *did* consider getting revenge at first but moved for the sake of the innocents who were being killed. Acknowledging that you can hate a nation without hating its people. And shows that she still doesn't like Nero and sees her as a tyrant, but again, stopping a planetary chronological death cult takes more priority)

A better example is proving how they *didn't* hide Iskandar being capable of doing evil things, it's not what they focus on due to it not being the crux of Zero's themes. And even then they still bring Iskandar's capacity for darkness to light. As Iskandar quite literally says he doesn't regret his soldiers slaying his sons and his empire dissolving into three parts if came from Iskandar's own/his soldiers' decisions. And that an ideal king must embody the extremes of both good *and* evil. The entire memorable speech is literally Iskandar going against' Artoria's paragon virtues that most modern people can admire, and rebuking her for it. (Not to mention he literally calls himself a tyrant in that same episode)

Nero in EXTRA and CCC is a much more interesting character than he is now in FGO.

I was definitely on Iskandar’s side during the banquet of kings, he’s a lot more charismatic and fun to watch (even if I do enjoy Gil as a character)
Also, downplaying the nastier parts of a character’s history to make them more palatable? Isn’t Nero over there like the prime example of Fate doing exactly that with? Like they constantly either say that a lot of it was either exaggeration, or they try to push the blame onto Nero’s mother. Boy that’s gonna be a fun one to cover when you get there 🫤
And yeah, Septum is easily the worst chapter in before the lostbelts. Even the FGO manga covering Septum specifically couldn’t fix that dumpster fire 😓

    Something you missed
Iskander self recognition as a son of zeus is also the cause of his current physical appearence
Its also the cause for his lightning abilities as you mentioned and this is actually another noble phantasm mentioned in his material profile
In the lord ell melloi manga several images of a younger iskander before he turned fully into a son of zeus appear
1 of them even seems to be based on an actual drawing of alexander the third that you showed in the video
