The Wii U Gamepad screen has some cooler colors so that actually doesn't surprise me. Probably using the real Wii U gamepad display from one that is working but in poor condition, this would maybe explain why they decided to used an aftermarket Gamepad shell.
Hey Jacor R i purchased the Super mario land/Super mario land 2 DX gba cartridge and i just wanna say thank you for giving this sad sap something to be happy about!
Good video. While these things might have been an interesting concept a few years ago, there’s no way to justify buying one of these when a $400 Steam Deck runs the entire PS2 library better than the PS2 and does MUCH more than just that.
I have a steam deck and not all PS2 games run great on it. Most do, but I get your point. I would never buy one of these now that I have my steam deck.
There's definitely a margin in these products, there's a huge market in china for repurposed tech. I imagine they're bulk buying in PS2s and other possibly faulty or just scuffed up consoles and repurposing them. Yes there's R&D into it but custom pcbs are cheap & handhelds are becoming popular again so parts like the screens and batteries are getting cheaper (plus labour is cheap in china). Another example of over-engineered repurposed tech would be laptop GPUs that are being turned into desktop compatible PCI-E cards, which are in quite the abundance at the moment. Tbh this is my favourite type of tech because of how clever the engineering is in some of it. Plus i mean if I had the means to bulk buy in PS2s for probably between $10-40 per console and then repurpose and resell them for like $500 i would. These companies likely make some smaller tech products so have their own in-house production and design engineers. Selling just a couple of these consoles is likely paying for the consoles alone, and the multiple revisions is likely just trying to find a design that will sell the best, once they've got a 'best seller' they'll likely hone in on that. Watch Linus Tech Tips' video on the chinese setups if you want an insight into the culture of repurposing old tech/appliances.
The one that you didn't know what the design was based on looks very similar to those ds consoles with broken upper screens that people make into gameboys, just the square shape, the triggers, and the protruding screen just screamed ds to me lol
I like the concept of a PS2 as a portable as much as the next guy, but it's still $500-$600 for a clunky plastic mess. Like I said it's great idea but not great on delivery. People liked the PSP because it has features the PS2 had and more. But I'm hoping this is in the right way of exposing PS2 tech to new tech. In hopes of seeing a masterpiece. But you'd expect things to get ugly in the development of working masterpiece. Great video Jacob R.
the wiiu pad is amazing because its actually really smart, and a great usage for these, or for any kind of aftermarket portable console project, since the gamepad is literally useless without the wiiu and surely theres a healthy supply of those.
If they are making a 300 dollar profit and selling even 2-4 a month the seller is making around 600 to 1200 dollars in profit doing something he/she loves, also 600-1200 in china/asia would be a pretty decent monthly salary.
He's not saying it is or isn't a lot of money, he's saying it's a relatively fair price for what the product is. Cost is relative to the value of a product. You certainly wouldn't say that $500 is too expensive for a car, correct? Or how about $20k for a house? That's absurdly cheap for that product, yet if you spent $20k on a diamond plated PS5 that'd be equally absurd in the other direction.
@@tyronejennings599 But expensive for *what*? It's a novelty item that's a completely unnecessary purchase for anyone in the market for this kind of device. You basically have to have disposable income of some kind to justify buying one of these. In that context, where the $500 isn't being possibly spent on actually important things like food or rent or whatever, it's not a lot of money at all. I wouldn't buy it, and I'm sure 95% of viewers wouldn't either, but that's likely because you value many other things you could spend $500 extra on instead of a novelty item like this. Being expensive isn't an objectively measurable concept, it's relative to the person spending the money and the value of the product, that's all.
That's not a 1:1 comparison. These have actual PS2s in them, a Steam Deck emulates a PS2. Nothing necessarily wrong with that, it's just a totally different product.

3:54 Now I’m noticing how small the PS2 Slim really is.. (I have a Wii U so I know the real size of the Wii U Gamepad) how did they manage to make the PS2 that small back then ? The PS2 Fat is a giant when compared to the PS2 Slim.
If you ever take a fat PS2 apart you'll see that the actual board is surprisingly small in proportion to the size of the machine. Dropping the HDD bay and making the disc drive top loading was probably 80% of the work, and making the power supply external was also huge. I'm not sure why they needed to make it quite *that* small, but logically that's why they were able to get away with it. Still super impressive, I'd be amazed if they were able to get away with a drop in size like that today, even on the digital PS5.
@@DannyTheEditor Oh I didn’t know that 😮 before you wrote this I thought they somehow managed to make the CPU / GPU much more efficient by making it on a much smaller node compared to the PS2 Fat, now I know why the PS2 Slim is so small, thanks for telling me.

Using the Wii U gamepad for a ps2 portable is really smart unironically. I always liked the feel of the Wii U gamepad ❤️
The USB is a deal breaker for me as it will cause issues (stuttering) in some games especially in FMVs.
