As a tip, Lia gives standard count religiously. So on board 4 when deciding whether to finesse the spade, when Lia plays high-low, you know they're 4-2 in which case finessing the spade is wrong (only relevant holding now is W with Qx)

4:04 but does that mean you can have improved if and only if you were lucky, or does it mean you could have logicked it out?

What’s the deciding factor for rebidding the 5 card S suit on board 5? I left it in 1NT and went -1. Otherwise tied the other 4 boards

Hi Pete, thanks for the daily challenge :)
Board 1, I indeed put in the 10 of clubs, but I played for hearts to be 3-3 (and keeping the 13th, not discarding), and put in the Q of diamonds on the first finesse. And later East had to discard their ace of diamonds when squeezed in clubs to avoid being endplayed for +2. So, same score, in the end.
Board 3, I overcalled with 3D instead of 2D (due to shortage in majors and partner being a passed hand and they were in vul, but us not), but I discarded my Q of spades for the A in the first trick, so hand an extra communication to dummy, and thus could finesse diamonds twice from there. Still got -100 with 3D-2, so draw :)
Board 5, I gave invite via 2C with the 10 hcp and 5card spade suit, which led to a catastrophic 2NT-2 (I should have probably read also the 2S bid caption more precisely for its end zone of 10 hcp).
Rest (2&4) were pretty flat, only difference is in board 2, I lead 9D (because East opened with 1 club), so intead of my 4th spade, so we promoted partner's 4th diamond instead.
Good game, nice video commentary as usual, thanks again.

Yep I did the same. Thanks Pete - otherwise more or less the same in the other boards

I made the same mistake at trick 2 not preserving a spade entry to lead up trumps twice (board 2). It "felt" like i wanted hand entries to play on minors.

Hi Pete - you landed on your feet on that last board. Rebidding that really horrible Q9 fifth spade suit deserved to go for -500 at least. Wests 2N bid over the redouble has to be a bug 🙂

yeah, imagine getting 13-14 hcp from partner, with AK(x) of spades on dummy :D or KJT/KJx. How horrible is the Q9xxx then with the 10 hcp? :D Might actually be making game.

@@emsyssa Not sure what sort of system you play but I would expect my partner to bid 2 spades with those holdings

Some interesting bidding sequences... On B3, which you "ominously" bought at 2D, I ended up in a horrible back and forth with partner Lia, where we got to... a very bad contract. None of the options were what I wanted to say! And the bids I thought might rescue us had the dreaded "This bid is not referenced. It is recommended to avoid it," which we are told to avoid if you don't want to trigger a meltdown in your robot partner. Then again, couldn't have gone any worse!

@@TheMiningProbe It started without interference, with them bidding 1S-1N-2H-2S. I was in the balancing seat, and I thought, "Now's the time to get in!" 🤦‍♂I double, partner bids 2NT (scramble), I bid 3D (which still would likely have led to a loss to Pete), partner than bids 3H natural (WTH, they had bid hearts!), east doubled, and then the pain began...
Not sure why Lia didn't just pass 3D! But maybe Lia's thinking, why didn't I overcall 2D in the first place...

Few interesting deviations playing weak NT on these - board 3, I tried a mini NT 1st seat favourable - Lia got to 2S but misplayed and went down. Board 5 was not so great as N opened 1NT, I transferred and went down ended in a hopeless 2S contract - at least not redoubled !

    1. I didn't run the Td, so I wound up making 5 due to East pitching a diamond (though the 9 comes into play if he holds the 4th diamond) and the 3-3 heart layout. Heart to the 9, then purposely blocking hearts left a hand entry. Opponents couldn't stop either hand from taking an extra red suit trick, even though I couldn't untangle them myself.
    2. Draw. Basically same defense.
    3. Pretty tricky to back in with 2d as a passed hand instead of preempting the first time. Felt way too risky to me. 2s is down 1 on anything except the normal diamond lead. You end up stripping partner's exit cards and they're forced to surrender the 8th trick in either hearts or clubs. Very sad to lose -110 to -100.
    4. Same bidding and play.
    5. 2s wasn't on my radar because even though you are guaranteed a 5-2 fit, the suit was so poor. Maybe my logic is wrong here. Anyway, you were dead to rights if that redouble was left in. :) Guess even bots don't know how to punish. What ever happened to penalizing opponents in this day and age? I'm down 1 in 1N.
