When I was in my teens back in the 70's I helped the neighbor on his farm. He had a Farmall 400, International 666 and an International 1466. I drove all three but really fond of the 1466. Fit a lot of ground with it as well as plowed. We used the 400 to mow and rake hay/straw. Then use the 666 to pull a International 430(?) baler. I and my brothers would buck the bale's and run the 400 back and forth from the field to the barn. Good old days. We worked our tails off but we had fun! Sure miss those days.

Back in 1968 Dad did custom haying for a guy on 1000 acres of alfalfa 4 cuttings a year. Sister at 14 ran the new John Deere 880 swather and knocked down 100 acres a day. Mom Brother and Dad baled at night with the dew on with three John Deere 215 Wire tie balers. I ran the HaroBed and could stack 4000 bales a day. He paid me .03 per bale. Not bad wages for a kid in school

For many years my dad bailed with an 850 new Holland baler behind many tractors. His dad bought it new in the 70s and dad ran it till 2009. The most memorable tractors he ran it with included an 884 international my uncle had, a 1210 case David brown, 930 case, but the itchiest award goes to the 570 Cockshutt, but that tractor had a nice pto setup for bailing with.

Very nice on a 4010. Those were days. I grew up 7 miles from town and there were 7 dairy farms on the way to town. Every one was a different brand. Today there is only one dairy and one grain farm.

I can say the same thing. There were a lot of small dairy farms around the area I grew up in back in the 1970s and early 1980s. Our local cheese company got all of their milk from these dairy farms. Today that same company gets no milk from the area and has to have it all shipped in from other states.

Greetings. Our farm is located in east central Wisconsin. We bale a large amount of dry hay into small square bales. We have modern equipment hay equipment for our operation, except one tractor. We use a 1980 2wd open station Ford 7700 on the main baler. The baler is a 2022 New Holland BC5070. It is equipped with hydraulic pick-up, hydraulic swing, hydro-formatic tension, and a model 72 thrower with hydraulic steer. We have a moisture sensor mounted in the bale chamber. We also added another amenity. We have a 12 volt electric motor on the bale tension adjustment and have that control on the tractor. It's a great feature.

What’s the purpose of the liquids tank on top of some of the balers shown?
We never had anything like that on our New Holland baler on the Farm in Wisconsin where I grew up in the 60’s & 70’s!

I never understood what those cans on the balers are for, like the one on New Holland, and what they contain

Do they not get a lot of burst bales from the baler that throws the bales up into the collection wagon?

Not that I have ever observed. No more than dropping on the ground. You get one here and there.

We used a 4030 pulling either a 276 or 378 baler. It’s been 17 years since it went down the road, so the memory is a little foggy.
