      His drum sound was just incredible, the Pearl drum kits that he used was also a key part of his drum sound, but yes his groove was untouchable. To me It sounds better, to have the drums and percussion on the right, I think it kinda balances the sounds out, with everybody in the middle except the keyboards to the left. Jeff was incredible and his groove with Mike was just so so good, RIP Jeff and Mike Porcaro.

    I only watched Goodbye Girl. The sound is phenomenal. Jeff Porcaro and (I think) Lenny Castro lay down some serious percussion heat, and the rest of the band is obviously tight as hell. While the lead singer has good chops and I think, for the most part, does justice to Bobby's original vocal, his ridiculous Michael Jackson/Milli Vanilli stage presence was impossible to watch.

    I saw the very end of this tour in Pasadena, California. By that time, Byron had been relegated to standing in the back, singing backup with his tambourine. They had Jenny sing lead on most of the essential Bobby Kimball and Joseph Williams tracks, and they only let Byron come out front for Out of Love, mainly because it had been released as an (unsuccessful) single at that time. I was surprised to see how stunningly limited Byron's range was (strong vocals, but limited to about one octave, and unable to reach highs or lows Bobby and Joseph did). From all I've read, it was Jeff Porcaro who (along with the label) really pushed for Byron. Bad call. Truthfully though, I've seen Toto in concert many times over the years, and vocals were always the main shortcoming in concerts that otherwise featured the best playing I've ever witnessed. There's no question that Bobby Kimball was the best singer of the bunch, but more often than not, his vocals were shot on tour (whether from drugs, lack of endurance, or just age during his second stint with the band). Toto's concerts were always worth seeing for the instrumental solos, but the truly spectacular work that makes them a band for the ages will always be the work they did in the studio where they could control vocals and offer the best performances on record, even if the lyrics were sometimes an afterthought.

      Interesting read,fully onboard with what you say...nice one.

    • @TheBigwheels11
      @TheBigwheels11 3 года назад +1

      In my humble opinion. While I agree Bobby was their best singer and he created the Toto sound, "Fergie" (Isolation) was their best singer
      It's too bad he didnt work out. He sang the Kimball parts really well

    • @samesource
      @samesource 3 года назад +1

      @@TheBigwheels11 Fergie definitely had a strong voice on Isolation, but even on that album, I hear Kimball's leftover backing vocals on tracks like Stranger in Town, and they just have a stronger, warmer timbre. Plus, it's my understanding that Fergie was almost completely unable to sing on the Isolation tour, and that was the main reason he got dumped. It would have been interesting to see how the band would have developed if Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, or Richard Page (all of whom were at one time offered the gig of singing lead for Toto) had been in the band. However, I think the best choice would have just been to focus on Luke as the primary vocalist after Kimball was out. I don't miss a tenor vocalist at all on Tambu. Kimball could have come back at some point, but having Luke mainly sing lead would have helped to cement a sound and identity for the band that could have made them more successful in the US in the late 80s leading into the 90s. I certainly applaud many of the contributions Joseph Williams has made to the band over the years, but I've never thought he fit as a rock vocalist--too soft pop bouncy...no edge.

      @david34802 3 года назад

      Did they have to keep Byron on the tour for contractual reasons? I feel like I’ve heard the band state this. I didn’t think a record company could dictate who was on tour.

    • @samesource
      @samesource 3 года назад +1

      @@david34802 Record companies can dictate a lot (at least they could back then). But, I have no idea if they were involved. I suspect the band had a contract with Byron that specified he would get paid for the rest of the tour, so the decision was to keep him, especially given Out of Love was being released as a single. It's not like he was a terrible person or causing problems as much as he was just a bad fit musically and personality-wise from everything I have been able to discern.

    Deu pra perceber o porque a maioria das músicas que Byron cantou nessa tour foram removidas da gravação do live in Paris. de pra perceber também o desconforto do Lukather com o Byron no palco.
    Essa tour tinha tudo pra ser a melhor do TOTO se não fosse o Jean Mickey Mouse Byron ( mas o Jeff e a gravadora quiseram ele neah, fazer o que 😕 )
    Vejo a galera aqui comentando dos ex vocalistas do TOTO e nunca mencionam o Fergie Frederiksen que cantou no álbum Isolation que pra mim é um dos meus álbuns favoritos. mesmo o Firgie sendo todo desafinado ainda preferia ele.

    The band on their peak, souynds so much better back then! Luke pulled off some amazing things live during that era, and could actually sing too, until his voice got fucked a few years later!

      I disagree, listen to them doing this song in the past 10 years with Steve Lukather on vocals, he sings it heavier, and the guitar and everything else is heavier and more rocking. They were more focused on keyboards in that era, they are back to being a rock band the last decade and much better for it.

    Everyone misses Jeff for creating the band, but let's be fair, his ''leader'' ego made him choose. Byron is a singer in another ''Out of love'' way for example: It's an extremely beautiful ballad. Maybe a copy of One More Try by George Michael with a solo by Luke? Yes. But he was good, the difference, that Toto came from two mega singers, Bobby with his clear screaming voice and Joe's mixed voice full, powerful and a little hoarse.
    Jeff thought that a singer who was focused on R&B, Soul, Pop would achieve both eras, but it was a mistake!
    I think Out of love is beautiful, I love his falsetto/belting in ''And I, Lie babe'' But he was another band idea.
    Jenny, after Bobby and Joe, was the best vocalist Toto had, it's no wonder she's the only one who had songs on his album besides being very dear to everyone
    Byron can't sing the semi ballad ''Stop Loving you'' because Joe's timbre is hot and Bobby's he would go to falsette instead of screaming
    Jeff for real together with the record company, fucked the band at this time
    If it wasn't for Luke Paich's common sense, I even believe that these days, if Bryon knew an instrument like I don't know Bass he could even be in the band singing his single

    Eu penso que Jean Michel Byron, poderia ter ficado mais tempo e gravado mais com o Toto,o acho um bom vocalista. As músicas são altas, não são fáceis pra aguentar uma turnê longa.O próprio Kimbal,Joseph sentiam o peso... ,mas o mundo fonográfico tem suas peculiaridades, uma pena.

    The picture is misleading, as it shows Simon and Bobby. Jeff was still alive in 1990. Byron was way to flamboyant for Paitch and Porcaro...and Lukather.

      Jeff liked him a lot in the beginning, but then realized that he wasn’t the right fit, he was ok. But, some of the dances that he did on stage looked like he was trying to hump someone, and he isn’t that nice of a person, he sent the band hate letters after they fired him.

    Love Toto but the vocals in this concert sucked big time. Byron only delivered in the first track. What's with the backing voca girls having full conversations while they're on stage?
