- Writer-director Cameron Crowe's Oscar-winning autobiographical film, about a teenage rock journalist in the 1970s, is now a musical. He talks with correspondent Tracy Smith about dramatizing the personal, even painful, truth in "Almost Famous," and about how the spirit of his mother (memorably played in the film by Frances McDormand) is present at New York's Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, eight shows a week.

This musical is a MUST see. I’ve seen it three times
I am envious...but thrilled for you. Hoping to see it on stage in the future.
Is the Tiny Dancer scene in the musical? Please say yes. It's "the scene" in the movie....
@@rhinman yes it's in the musical!!
I always knew of his attachment to the movie and Rolling Stones but im kinda blown away that he was also attached to a number of other prominent Hollywood films. Crowe is pretty blessed to have so much back. to back success since he was only 15.
Big, virtual hug 🤗😘 for Cameron -he seems like such a sweetheart 😘 and I hope his show is a success.
I love the movie, so happy its now a musical on Broadway!
Cameron and me grew up in San Diego right around the same time although he’s a little older. I can relate to everything in that movie so perfectly. Thank you Cameron the movie really is a love letter to music.
I’m from there, too. Grew up nearby the Globe and Balboa Park. There really is something magical about the place, even though most of the lovely grass areas have been paved over…
I can definitely relate to Mr. Crowe. Grew up in Point Loma and started going to concerts at the Sports Arena and plays at The Globe just a couple years after his journey began. Did some writing about Rock & Roll in my high school journalism class. Even had the same first name. Yes, it was definitely hard to be cool in high school with a name like Cameron. But ever since Ferris Bueller, it's the coolest name ever. Almost Famous is one of my favorite films of all time. Can't wait to see the musical.
Wow - that was so touching.
I'm a couple years younger than Cameron and grew up reading him in the rock mags. Music and record stores and concerts were a huge part of my teenage life. I was so thrilled when Almost Famous came out...that was my life, going to concerts, trying to meet the bands...such great memories. I'm so happy for him and all of his success and how he feels his mom with him every night in the theater. Hope the show goes on the road eventually!
Loved the movie. Hope I can see it soon.
Tracy Smith is a solid interviewer...well done!
I loved that movie; I'd love to see it on stage. It's a fabulous story!
We saw it on Broadway - it was WONDERFUL! The WSJ panned it - was he at the same performance I was?
So did NY Times and Washington Post.
One of my favorite movies-“Almost Famous”. Would love to the musical
One of my favorite movies ever.
Okay, I gotta watch the movie now
You will not regret seeing it. One of my all time favorite movies.
Seeing it next week. Can't wait.
Looks splendid!
One of the greatest movies ever
Feeling it
Cheers!
I'm in awe of you, Cameron. Oh, how I wish I could collaborate on a project with you.
I would ❤ to see this onstage. Cameron Crowe is one of my all time favorite writers. I was thrilled when my late Mom saw & loved this movie, which IMO is Crowe's masterpiece.
I saw the play last night. It's good.
I never knew this was based on his life. Great movie.
So in love with this show SO GRATEFUL TO SEE IT. CANT WAIT TO SEE IT AGAIN
@CBS Sunday Morning Awsomee 💖 💖 💖 💖 💖 💖 💖 💖 💖 💖 💖 💖 💖 💖 💖
❤❤❤❤
Is the Tiny Dancer scene in the musical? Please say yes. It's "the scene" in the movie....
Yes. The play touches all the key scenes from the film.
Casey Likes is shorter and MUCH better looking than Cameron Crow ever was. It's great to be able to cast yourself as someone more appealing! Amazing show!
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
What is the name of the woman who is doing his interview
Tracy Smith
I went from a traumatized employee being bullied and harassed by management and CEO Gail Boudreaux to an Iconic Superstar Xclusyph Icon who is now known all over the world.
Alice (the real Alice) looks like 'those' days. Have Ann & Nancy seen? Not wanting to be critical, it's difficult to imagine today's kids aligning with yesterday.
I saw this on Saturday, and it wasn't good -- but to each their own.
I read NY Times and Washington Post reviews. Both bad. It makes watching this story very sad. All of the love, attention, hard work - and it fails.
I liked Say Anything (however Ione Skye would've dumped Cusack in England, most likely). Penny Lane the singing band groupie...should be good.
What I don’t understand about this show, is if they were going to continue using Tiny Dancer in it why didn’t they just have Elton John score the show, or at least allow the new composer to have the chance to write an equally important song for that scene? Imagine the most famous song in your show NOT being written by you.
No mention of nancy wilson
That’s because they are not together anymore.
Almost Famous is a masterpiece and one of my all-time favorites. Sadly, I think the musical only happened bc Cameron is probably in movie jail after 3 huge bombs in a row. To be fair, I never saw the musical but it looks pretty cheesy. I think good musicals can (sometimes) become good movies, but not the other way around.
06:40 could we please stop with this "color" nonsense. I am 43 years old, I don't look at people as a color, I never have, and simply saying the word makes all of us feel like we should be looking at people differently. I'll still see the Broadway show when I visit New York City in the summer of 23, and I don't care what color the cast is as long as they make the show great!
The not so rosy history of America would like to oblige to this view.
Isn't the movie about young underage girls being used and discarded by rockstars? I'm not sure how romanitc that is.
In the film they only gave bj’s. A lady has to have boundaries after all!
The love story isn't really between people. The love story is about music at a particular place and time and the way it brings people together. To put it another way: The love story isn't between Penny and Russel or Penny and William. The love story is between William and Rock music. If you insist on making the love story between people, it could be considerded a tragic love story.
NYC has to much crime to travel there now. The play looks great
If the show does well, maybe it will tour and come to a city you feel safer visiting.
@@RetroGirl1967 That would be nice, there is not many east coast cities where crime is out of hand.
Times Square is the safest part of New York City. Bright lights and cops everywhere 🙄
@@RudieObias Not worth it
@@woodenbeast9337 If you don't want to go to NYC to see a Broadway show, then why even comment in the first place? 🤔
Why did they cast a 28 year old woman to play a 15 year old?
Child labor laws. It's easier to have somone over 18 playing the role.
Tom Cruse. Yuck. He use to be sweet. Now he seems just creepy. Over played. Yuck
Well there's no Tom Cruise on this stage and he wasn't in the movie. You should be just fine. That was Jerry Maguire. Make sure you don't see that!
Musicals . . . meh.
Expand your horizons
@jjj1951 I’ve tried and there are about 4 or 5 I like, but many on Broadway sound exactly the same. I like some of the classic’s though like “My Fair Lady”, “Sound of Music”, “Fiddler”, etc.
Vote DONALD TRUMP 2024🇺🇸
🤣 LMFAO!
Where did that comment come from?!?
Almost Famous is a great film, and Kate Hudson was excellent (too bad she peaked so early and couldn't follow up with any solid performances). McDormand was terrific as the mom!
Agree
@tiki98 I can't pick just one quote, so consider this a greatest hits:
"Don't make friends with the rock stars."
"I am a Golden God."
"Is it that hard to make me look cool?"
"The only currency in this bankrupt world is what you share with someone who's uncool."
nooooooooooooo. Leave a perfect film alone!
