Ive been a runner for a long time. I got into it because it was the cheapest form of working out. I always ran in Hokas. But I did some research and discovered huge benefits of running minimalist. I now run in the Furoshiki Vibrams in the winter and Bedrock sandals in the summer. Ill never wear "running shoes" again. My "everything" connecting to running has improved. Great video!

Keep it up, bro. People need to discover this liberating form. Running in sandals has helped me improve my form, which in turn has cured my plantar fasciitis which had plagued me for most of running life. No more black toenails. And like you mentioned, your feet become ultra sensors of your surroundings. Just another level. Thanks.

My question is... why are sandals so expensive? $65 - $75?? There's no special treatment to them, is there? It's a tough leather sole with straps. What am I missing? Some people run in cheap huaraches..

Fuck yes. I had major foot problems. I tried everything--vibobarefoot, zeros, vibrant fivefingers--and then the guy at the store recommended I try out Shammas. And finally, I have no more running problems. It corrected all my gait issues, strengthened my feet and calves, and provides more cushioning than something like vibrant fivefingers so I'm not constantly injuring my metatarsals anymore. But the best thing is they improve my stability/agility a lot over regular shoes. I feel like I'm a ninja when I'm running trails.

I run trails in Xero Z-Trek sandals and I love it. Still prefer running complete barefoot the best, but not on trails.
When I started running barefoot, running became more about feeling good and having fun instead of pace and mileage. Now it's all about having fun while feeling great.

Don’t your feet hurt when u step in a rock

@@Izzee-jh8hm confirmed, with a feeling of embarrassement i ran 9 kilometers (in very hard place though, lots of small rocks) and still it was fun while being iritated that i cannot run faster. Running unshod is fun-confirmed. BUT with sandals i guess would be less risky if it goes about that rocks and unknown roads running for the first time or you can be just 'free' (i have decathlon football shoes for running at this moment, completely better than running shoes)

@@Izzee-jh8hm I run in the Xero Genesis huaraches (pretty much like running in an in-sole tied on with shoe laces) and my favorite terrain is gravel or weathered asphalt. On that terrain, I have no choice but to step light and quick with the soles of my feet conforming over the stones and holes. This amount of textural diversity actually feels great and keeps me from slamming my feet into the ground like I might be tempted to do on a smooth sidewalk where every step is a clone of the last one. Try running barefoot on some lumpy pea gravel sometime for a similar sensation.

After several years of jumping rope barefoot or in barefoot-style shoes, I started running regularly about 7 months ago. It wasn't long that I noticed I was blowing out of the toe box of my closed-toe barefoot-style shoes and winding up with bruised toenails because of how much I would lift my toes on landing. I switched over to Xero Genesis huaraches and that's no longer a problem at all. In addition to this, I've noticed a variety of other benefits:
    - Water: When you run in sandals, water is no issue. Puddles, crossings, and rain are almost fun to run through. Sometimes, if my feet get too hot or dirty on a longer run, I'll purposely look for some water to run through. Within a mile, my feet are usually dry again.
    - Freedom: You mentioned the liberating feeling in this video and that's definitely true. When I run in sandals, I feel like I'm getting away with something. The feeling of the air on my feet makes me feel like I'm running on a beach even when I'm actually running down some city street in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
    - Form: Not only can I not run in shoes, but I can't even run in sandals with any padding. I tried running in the Xero Z-Trails, a "barefoot" sandal with a little bit of foam in the sole, and it through off my form so much that my knees started aching within a quarter-mile. A minimalist huarache is one of the only types of footwear that demand a softer, more controlled landing that saves my knees.
    - Weirdo Points: I'd be lying if I didn't sometimes like the attention-not toward me, but people see running miles and miles in sandals and they see that doing so is possible. I actually enjoy the double-takes and other runners looking over in the corners of their shades and probably thinking, "What the hell kind of shoes were those?"

Avid sandal runner here and I would agree with all points. I would only warn folks that, if you're going to be running more on gravel, make sure to opt for a sandal with greater sole protection so you don't damage your plantar fascia or metatarsal heads. Though the Shamma Warriors are incredible for roads and dirt trails, for rockier or more technical trails, the Shamma Mountain Goats will offer the protection you need.

Thank you Patrick for this video. Running in sandals is so comfortable on a hot summer day rather than sweating in foot coffins. I love my Bedrock Sandals.

I run deer track which are basically un groomed trails. Our terrain has loads of pine needles and spear grass that has a nasty habit of poking your feet and getting stuck in socks. My question is, how do you deal with forest debris that would get inbetween the saddle and your feet?

Heads up, you still lack the grounding which is the main health benefit of barefoot walking/running. Theres a brand of Huaraches with conductive laces but Im thinking about diy ones of some conductive elastomer, like some natural rubber with graphite in it if I can find one. Natural rubber is the only way to go for me as I read a lot about common plastics leaching chemicals.

All good points, but most if not all them can be done in a barefoot style shoe like the Lems except for the leaves and dirt on your feet. One must account the healthyness of their feet. If someone has severely weak feet or a permanent foot defect they need to address it first or beware of minimal footwear. I’ve been selling running shoes for over 25 years and one of the rare ones that strongly like barefoot style I still know when to caution it. Thanks for the video.

They could just buy altras instead of throwing out minimal outright - it has a cushioned sole but still is zero drop and has a natural toebox shape

Jesus. Sounds like mad-man talk, but what would I know? I'm a shoe-wearing cultist. I might just have to try this out.
