    Verse : 5:02 C - G/B - Am7 - G/B - C
    Chorus 6:58 D/F# - G - D/F# - Em(x2) - C - sets you up for verse and then back into chorus
low e low e low e low e a - can substitute high e for b for G and Em if you want

I have been playing guitar for 6 years now, and at this point I rarely have to look up how to play songs, being able to decipher most tunes by ear. I got into a fingerpicking phase recently and finally learned Travis picking, and it was from your videos again! I cannot even begin to explain how instrumental, (pun intended), you were to my development as a guitar player in the beginning. Here I am back where I started. I can't thank you enough Marty, keep up the great work.

@@denaaryeh9503 Everytime you learn a song actually learn the chords. If you only learn the patterns and forget about the names of the chords and the notes in them, you will hit a roadblock in the future when you want to make your own things but dont have the music theory knowledge. You mechanics will be way ahead of you actual music knowledge that way. This happened to me where I could play really anything and solo just fine but if someone told me to play like a Dminor7 I wouldnt be able to whip it up. Its gets embarrassing eventually hahhaa but seriously learn the theory it will go so far in your development.

I've been playing for almost 20 years, and I don't usually have to look something up unless it's a complicated metal lick. Most of the time I can just put the song on and grab the guitar. Sometimes I'll break it into sections, depending on how many changes the song has.

You are an EXCELLENT teacher. I bought a guitar like 22 years ago because I fell in love with this song and pledged to one day learn it. A few lessons and kids and a lot of life later I am finally picking it back up with a firm resolve to learn this. The first couple tutorials I watched weren't very helpful and slightly overwhelming (for this 22 year beginner), but YOU are a real teacher who knows what it was like before you were a talented player. Some players are excellent musicians but not good teachers. You are BOTH, which is rare. I appreciate it so much! I'm already practicing this and can't wait to learn more from you. I just subscribed. 🙏🏻🙌🏻🎶

I was hoping in vain to remember the name when it came up and I knew I'd come back whenever I got the Dunlop capo. But this song works so thanks for the lesson.

Ive been playing off and on for almost 30 years. I'm not great but definitely not a beginner guitarist. I don't like to practice much but every 5 years or so ill go on a tear and pick up something new. Ive always admired guys who could fingerpick, but I've always shied away because I knew my right hand would be starting from zero, or close to it. I love Landslide and Leader of the Band though and always wanted to play those songs and maybe some Jim Croce eventually. Using this video and a few others, I've made some good progress in a few weeks. Right now i'm at the stage where I can play at normal speed with some mistakes until I think about what im doing and flub it up. 😀 From previous experience in guitar, in another couple of weeks i'll feel pretty good and try to sing along, which will immediately screw me up. In the end im guessing ill probably master this song in 3-4 months playing every day for 30 min. Definitely worth the time, but it goes to show even somewhat experienced players have to learn something that brings us back to the very beginning of learning to play, and how hard it is to stay motivated when your hands dont do what you want them to. Don't quit beginners! If you get bored, find new songs that are in your skill level to keep you interested.

Through thick and thin we were always together. It's just a GREAT song musically that captures my feelings, or vice versa I feel a lot whenever I hear it. Marty... Thanks for always being there buddy... I'm the one teaching kids now, like you did for me. I'm having to show them that it's people like you that they're looking for. Anyway, I couldn't express how glad I am to see you're still around, and more, your old vids are just as useful as they ever were. Keep kicking brother... and we'll keep pressing the distance between noise and music, smiles and cringe, in your honer and work. You're life and time have rippled an opus that only the nubees know by heart and the greats know by ear. All I can say is a meager, "Thank you, from us all, and most sincerely from me". A hat tipped and a moment shared. You've been proven invaluable by the most chaotic of courts. I am humbled once again. The chords are calling, so I must go, but hug your family extra tight tonight. You've made it, whatever 'it' is... I'm sure they know albeit my intention is to encourage you to celebrate it in the best of moments; You're own. Thanks Marty... I'll see you around if you don't turn square. ✌

Hey, Marty, you are the greatest! And this lesson is not “old,” folks, it is an evergreen classic, and I’m sure lots of people like me are using it right now, in 2025.

Finger picking is amazing, especially when you get a couple of patterns down and you walk into a music shop and look at guitars and you dont even need to ask the salesman can you borrow a pick for a few minutes =P Nah thanks i'll use the picks that god gave me =P

THANK YOU!!! I tried using tabs and by ear and never thought I'd be able to play this unless I strummed it, which doesn't quite sound as good IMHO. This is priceless!! :)

Idk why ur suck good teacher lol. Sometimes mess chords up. Mean that respectfully because u are phenomenal teacher. I'm 37. 3 yrs ago nephew got guitar. I always wanted to learn but got scared couple time I did. But he was watching one of your beginner tutorials and thought oh I could do that. Started with the basics. Still learning but no longer a beginner. You have literally taught me everything I know. Not trying be pro or anything past ny prime in that respect. But have played at some get togethers. Played with some very exp family members. Was them that always made me want to learn. Long story short ur the best. Tried other RUclips tutorials but always check if you covered the song first. Anyone has the passion and patience to learn. Stick with Marty. He will show you the way. This one being one of my favorites next to nutshell. Thanks man

Trying to learn this on my first ever instrument Baritone ukelele. No experience in music what so ever. Love the learning progress.
