The first half of this video is an image review and discussion of the photographs I took on my most recent trip to Paris and London. The second half is a story about the worst 24 hours of my life, which involved an 11-hour flight and multiple destroyed bathrooms. Good times.
I originally planned to exclusively shoot analog film on my Europe trip. I was going to bring my Fujifilm GA645Zi medium format rangefinder camera and a big ol' bag of color negative film. It was going to be romantic, nostalgic, unique. But then I didn't do it. As I got closer to the trip, I realized how impractical it would be.
Now don't get me wrong, if practicality was my primary motivation in life, I wouldn't be a photographer - and I especially wouldn't be one who shoots film. But everyone has a threshold. Five x-ray machine security checkpoints and dim winter light were going to be more than I wanted to deal with while also carting around too much luggage in frigid temps.
So I traded my Fujifilm for a Fujifilm. That is, I traded my GA645Zi for an X-Pro2.
Generally speaking, I don't get excited about digital cameras. All cameras are good now. They're all basically the same. And most of them are boring as hell. But the X-Pro2 touches me in a special way (not that way). For some reason, the X-Pro2 gets me excited to take pictures. Maybe it's the external control dials or the vintage-camera aesthetics or the film simulation modes, but whatever it is, I just dig it.
I've been drooling over the graphite X-Pro2 for a couple years now but never had a good enough reason to spring for it. So I took this trip as the golden opportunity to justify dropping the dough. Along with it I bought the matching 23mm f/2 lens and an 18-55mm f/2.8-4 zoom. I love that 23mm. It's compact, fast, and most importantly it matches the graphite camera body!
The X-Pro2 was the perfect tool for this job and I'm happy to say that I'm very pleased with my purchase. But this trip wasn't all about this new mirrorless digital camera craze everyone's talking about. I did actually shoot some film on this trip. I brought my Mint SLR 670-S Polaroid camera and a few packs of film to capture those analog VIBES I'm always chasing.
These two compact cameras were packed in my Tenba DNA Messenger 15 Slim bag which, I must say, I am absolutely smitten with. It's my new favorite bag. Silent velcro, top zipper access, tons of pockets, and damn-good waterproofing...yeah it's a good product.
Enjoy the images, enjoy the story, and thanks for watching!

Nick Carver; fine art photographer and fine art storyteller.
lol
Man, those dress/window shots. So good.
Agree. Would love to see that in plexiglass as said.
I thought for a while you were the same person
Matt Day and Nick Carver two of my favorite RUclipsrs/Photographers!
They may have been separated at birth.
Thanks, Matt. Means a lot coming from you.
This went from being a good photo blog to a GREAT comedy performance in a flash.Marvellous .
Those dress shots are incredible! I love those moments when just by chance, you happen to be at the right place, at the right time, with a camera in hand. You just know before you've even snapped, that your walking away with some incredible images. All I can do is smile in moments like that.
Those are memories that can’t be made up. The details made me feel like I was there. Thanks for sharing. Love the videos, and photos. Keep up the great work 🙏.
Great video Nick! Love the story telling and the images as well! 👌 Can’t wait for the next one!
I don't know how I missed this video! What a tale of air travel gone bad. I was dying during the telling, having been there and experience a similar 24 hours of hell. Those images of the shattered glass are brilliant and I would love to see them hanging on a wall as described. Great half hour Nick!
That was a damned amazing and miserable story. I'm sorry you and your fiances suffered so, but it sure as hell made for a great, if not, gross story. Having made that long trip several times, this will always provide me a perspective that regardless of how long or uncomfortable it may feel, it could be a hell of a lot worse. Thanks for sharing. PS, love the pictures behind the broken glass. Worth the whole trip.
Nick, I loved your shattered glass Paris shots. They are amazing.
So glad I found your channel today, these photos and the stories behind them are so interesting that it reminds me of some of my travelling and makes me looking forward to summer even more, I just don't take many photos in the winter.
Love all the images, especially the "window" images. They are truly unique. Would love to see one framed up the way you mentioned. Nothing worse than getting sick on a trip, sorry to hear how bad it was.
Thank you very much!
Nick, The shots of the dresses through the shattered glass are spectacular. I love the results and the statements they make. Very inspiring.
Wonderful window shots Nick and a great narrative. The storytelling was brill, anyone jumping this bit is missing out!
This has to be the best image/camera/barfing video out there.
So awesome.
That's some steep competition. Thank you!
Nick, this was a great video. Loved the first part, but the delivery and story telling in the second part was just fabulous! Recent subscriber. Love your content and presentation. Thx for the hard work.
Love in the background of the unboxing a green bottle of golden goodness!! Laga is amazing!!
Absolutely gorgeous photos through the glass. Exquisitely done. Bravo! Fashion and politics beautifully and perfectly documented through your art.
Hi Nick, really great image review thank you ! Your story, you are the most awesome story teller ever!
Thank you again, Don
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!
I really love your passion and your style! ❤️Scattered windows and beautiful dresses blew my mind. Being a fujilover from the first time I held one in my mind 📷This cam also triggered and still triggers my "shoot more because it feels so good" gene. Thx for your vids!
Nick your video's are brilliant. Thats story, deserves to be told in a pub with a couple of nice beers, glad your feeling better. All the best from Ireland.
I feel the same way about mine! I love the Graphite model! Aside from the way it looks (which is non-essential), I love everything about it. I brought it to Japan with me on two trips and didn't regret not bringing my larger work DSLRs. Welcome to the "club"! Thanks for the video. Great photos :)
Damn that was a fine story. I was in tears when you acted out puking in the airport. Great story telling. As a Londoner you're welcome back anytime... oh and great pics too. I'm sub'ing and ring that bell. ding ding.
I don’t know how I missed this video man great pictures as usual with a standup comedy style story nice twist sir! Traveling is where it’s at. Glad you both made it home ok
Wow Nick! So happy you finally pulled the trigger and went to London and Paris (my favorite city). The photos are mind blowing (especially the dresses through shattered glass). I’ve always said you make magic with a camera. Also, was cringing the whole time you described being ill 😷 at the end. OMG!!! Nothing worse.
HOLY COW! Those window shots are amazing!
Greetings from London! Nick, you are a great storyteller. I’m glad I watched this video till the very end:)
Awesome plexiglass pics and so nice seeing Yoshino’s off Piccadilly....love that restaurant.
You're right, those shattered glass shots are awesome! And they come with an interesting story to back them up.
Yes another Nick Carver Video! Awesome Polaroids!
Thank you!
I injured my ankle - badly - in a small French village back in 2015. Seemingly, the whole town came together to help us get the care I needed -- quickly and for free -- and catch the late train back to Paris. The cab driver stopped the fare and helped me into the pharmacy to explain what I needed, and we had to beg him to take a tip. Two days later (on crutches), the folks at the airport were also super helpful getting us and our luggage to our gate.
When we landed in the US...we were on our own.
I'm really enjoying your channel even though I don't shoot film and only shoot landscapes. Good stuff. The shattered glass photos in this one are excellent.
brilliant video Nick! can't wait to see those prints
Outstanding video Nick. Sorry it ended that way. Glad you enjoyed London, and the British nosh. Haste ye back, mate!
Another great episode from the awesome nick carver. Thanks
Nick, great photos in France of the glass etc. I actually enjoyed the second half as I have been there plus all things scatological are funny, great job.
Phenomenal story!!!!! IMDB 11/10. :))) Thank you man!!
I really enjoy your story in Paris. Make me laugh a lot during this difficult time. Thank you
thank you for sharing, great images as usual. I have been looking for a new messenger bag for 8 months now...that Tenba recommendation was really helpful :)
Great images man, love those dress shots, and the story was a trip down memory lane for me, did the same sort of thing in Egypt. So I feel for ya.
Nick... seriously dude... this is one hell of a video. 1) Amazing pictures. 2) Good gear review. 3) That story... and your way of telling it... kept me laughing out loud non stop. I'm so sorry for your plight. But damn, you're just as great a storyteller as you are a photographer. Bravo sir.
Love the dress pics. Liked the window/rain pics in London even better. AS always, fun to watch too!
im glad you enjoyed London so much Nick.....i love you video's ,,from London
Nick those cracked glass images are so special, very nice work.
Love your street photography shots Nick. Some really creative stuff!
Agree. Your shattered window photos are wonderful!
Thank you!
Another great entertaining video! I had a Canon setup for many years but found myself less and less motivated to shoot with it. As you say the bag you use makes a big difference so I sold my backpack and entire setup and bought an x-t20 and have never looked back. I much prefer the physical mechanical nature of the Fuji. No more endless sifting through menus and it doesn't feel so clinical and soulless as the canon ecosystem and has me enjoying my photography more than ever
Great video. Stuck around for the whole thing. Glad I did. I feel your pain, I don't take being sick well either. On the other hand those were some fantastic photos. I shoot Fuji as well and love it.
Nick, incredible work! Absolutely love those dress shots. Sorry that you got sick! The river is called "La Seine". Glad you got a great time in Paris!
Wow! Great!!! Wonderful images of broken glass. Def. def print them!!!
Oh man, i'm feeling sorry for you! But that second part of the video was probably one of the funniest stories i've heard in a long time. You're a hell of a storyteller by the way!
I'm sorry for that miserable 24 hours of sickness and flight BUT... That's was the funniest travel story I've heard in a long time and I can laugh about it now because something similar happened to me a long time ago. On another note... I loved those cracked window photos, too! Freaking amazing!
Great photo's, and a great story Nick!
Those shattered glass images are beautiful! Wow. Great work.
Man Nick, that was quite a story. I’ve been through something like that as well but on a long road trip from LA to SF. I think we stopped every 20 miles for most of the way.
Love your window shots, those will make for an awesome series of prints.
Great story teller. Very amusing. Great photos but the story made this video for me.
Loved the photo's in Paris of the stores with shattered glass...an artistic photographers dream .Well done!
Oh man, that story.... some humor mixed in with the tragedy...so sorry to hear and felt really bad for you guys. The way you told the story and with the violent puking I can totally relate to unfortunately as I have the same problem when I fall ill. Loved the photos though.
Nick, great video. I too have a Canon 6D, which I loved, but also have the Xpro2, and everything you said about it is true. The images through the windows are really a great portfolio. Wish I knew you had come to NY, would have loved to meet you and say hi. Very entertaining video, keep it going. And oh, that story, had me glued to the tube.
Hi, first time I've seen one of your videos and I've got to say I loved it. Great shots and as a Londoner not a bad accent. Can't wait for your next one.👍
Wow man..Great great story..you have a gifted talent of storytelling..thanks for sharing
... and man, that story was hilarious! Thanks for such a great post!
Really like your videos I always get so inspired by your work
Best channel ever. Inspires my photography and triggers my sympathy puking. Most excellent.
Thank you, sir! And hey, if I can get just one viewer to sympathy puke, I feel I've done my job.
I have always enjoyed your stories. Thank you!
Loved the Image of those Phone booths and the Image of the Dinner wagon. But the overall gorgeous shots, was those with the broken windows....wow, that was not ordinary Images. So damn beautiful.
Hi Nick - great story. Loving your work.
Man, did you make me laugh with your puking story! Best photo RUclips video I’ve watched this year! Never mind photography, you should do Stand-Up! Oh and your broken window pics weren’t bad either!
Glued to my chair, listening breathlessly; what a terrible experience, man.
I got a little nauseous myself...
The dresses shots?
Sincerely one of the most beautiful things in photography I've ever seen!
it's really great to see this dude again .. especially with the fujifilm Xpro 2
A Nick Carver video - aka stop what you're doing and watch now. Entertaining and inspiring as always!
I think I found my next status update. Haha - thanks man!
That was an epic unboxing. Well done sir.
A nice opportunity that presented itself... good job. Yes, go Big!
Nick, love the shattered glass photos they looked exquisite. Your telling of the story about the trip home was brilliant. Many thanks for sharing. Try Rome next time round, you'll love that as well.
They don't come every week, but when they do, all stops and I watch the Nick Carver video. This is the good stuff.
Sorry about the sickness but glad you both had a wonderful trip. London is our favorite city and so easy to get around. We can spend days in the National Gallery. Hope you can make it back soon. I'm thankful that you introduced me to Alabama Hills. Since then I've had several great trips there. Take care and congratulations on your wedding. John
Thank you! Hope to make it back there someday.
Entertaining story Nick, I chuckled plenty, I've been there, on the way back from Thailand a long time ago, I feel your pain! If you make it back to the UK come and visit Bristol, just a couple of hours from London and full of life, history and culture. Those shots of Paris are fantastic, the dresses behind shattered glass beautiful. I'd buy one for my wall if you ever decide to put prints up for sale. The London shots were great too, the colours absolutely nailed what it's like to be there. You pick up the atmosphere of a place, that's art.
Hi Nick, Greetings from London, I just discovered your channel through Thomas Heaton's interview. I Love it.
That story was worth the journey. I like it, the part about "the other end" was a surprise as I was trying to imaging all the possible solution I didn't think about that one :)
Hilarious !!!
I’m planning a trip to Europe and I’ve been eying the X Pro 2 for my travel camera as well. Great minds think alike! Horrible story of your flight home...absolute nightmare...but the pictures you got are seriously stunning. Glad it was a good trip overall!
Fresh air in Paris traffic, good one. Great advert for European tourism though and I really enjoyed your images, I'm going to grab my camera and go smash a few windows in the local shops.
LOL oh man!!! what a marathon that was pretty funny!
Love the Polaroid and the night shots, but the broken windows with the clothes behind them are terrific. It's a great idea to print them behind an acrylic glass.
Great storytelling!
The Photographs trough the windows are incredible.
Your skill on calibrating the colors it's just insane even in digital. Hope you will do a video on that too! Could be super helpful.
HAHA!! Dude, you remind me so much of some of my friends.. that’s story and the way you told it was like I was listening to a buddy of mine!! Love your videos man
Great photos. Great story. Another great video!
Thank you!
excellent blog! Loved those broken window pics.
You are a good story teller, both with your images and your words!!. :)
Hey Nick, I like the window pictures. Real Art !
Those dress shop images are just beautiful Nick.
Welcome to the Fujifilm Fan Club !!
This video started out nice and then went off on a tangent into depths of nastiness that I hitherto didn't expect to find in Nick Carver's repertoire.
Brilliant video, Nick. Those broken window shots are total magic. Shame you couldn’t do the on location stuff, I think the clip of you passing round a mint to sniff would have been golden.🙌
Now *this* is fantastic photography content.
My first comment since finding your channel, Nick; another film shooter (+ digital). I've caught up on a few videos, appreciate the terrific humour but was not prepared for the final Paris saga - I was in stitches, greatly sympathising of course and knowing I'd have died on the spot, but it was hilarious. Kudos to the folk who saw you through the various stages from Paris to LA, too. I make the flight from here in the Antipodes to London etc quite frequently (23 hours) and hope E.coli etc will not be my travelling companion. Late to the party but you may read this by some small chance.
Thank you for the kind words! It was no fun dealing with whatever stomach bug I had, but hey, at least it made for a good story 👍🏼
Brillaint photographs!!!
Those images through the shattered glass are simply stunning.
Ohhhh man! I know was 24 h of nightmare, but, too fun! Really 15 min of laughing! Anyway... really love the photo of the broken shop window. Thanks for sharing!!!
Oh man! Reminds me of the time I was in Hawaii and had some sorta sushi that did me in. I was up sick all night purging, and had to get up to do a submarine thing in the morning. No bathroom, no moving. THE WORST. Glad you’re home safe and feeling better.
Haha - oh, God. I'm pretty sure if you forced someone to get into a submarine with food poisoning, you'd be violating the Geneva Convention. That sounds brutal.
Nick Carver it was possibly the worst experience of my life. The only thing that kept it together is the knowledge that if I let anything out, pretty much the entire submarine would have followed. Kind of a nightmare scenario. Lol
I hung in there for the story and I’m glad I did. I hate to laugh at another’s misery but dude you had me rollin’. Thanks, I think. Anyway, good video all around. Peace.
A brilliant video and photography. Love the glass photographs. Sorry to hear you had food poisoning on the way back home. I also live Fuji digital cameras because of the colours and they feel like film cameras. I also love English breakfast but would be biased living in London:)
