christopher perry Yes , Absolutely ! I've been a Dead Head since the early 70's Seen them live sooo many times... And today almost 50 yrs. later this version still brings tears to my eyes...... God Bless Jerry... I miss you!!
JUST READING MY PAST COMMENT, AND CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S BEEN A YEAR ? ................ WHAT A LONG STRANGE TRIP IT'S BEEN!!! GONNA BE 60 IN DEC.?????????????
You're not alone with the tears, dawg. The ending of this PERFECTION of funk, jazz and rock is simply TRANSCENDANT. Period. End of story. Whoever saw this live, saw the Grateful Dead in one of their finest moments, without question.
My 80 year old dad was an old school engineer. The clean cut, no nonsense suit and tie guy. Had this on in my car. He said "I really like this." I remained quiet and he two minutes later he said it again. "John, who is this?" "It's the Grateful Dead" I said calmly. "I like it!" he said back. Guess he mellowed with age.
Had a similar experience with my mom once. Came into my room, and asked what I was listening to. Told her (I think it was Dead Set), and she said "THIS is the Grateful Dead?" I''m not sure what she expected, but I'm sure it was much scarier in her head than what she heard that day.
I’m nearly 50yrs old. I’ve been on almost 40 commercial flights. UI have never left the ground without this song playing in my headphones. I hit play when the jets fire up. And the silly wheels start rolling. O I can feel it now just typeing this. Up up and away. The way take off puts you back in your seat. Beautiful.
Imagine this...I was at my sister's cabin on Lake Winnipesakee in the spring,(off season, place to ourselves) crystal water, White Mountains view across the lake. We partied all night, slept late and the cool folks next door were outside all night and into the morning..around an outdoor fire... I woke up to this song playing on their stereo....I wanted that moment to last forever, the whole scene was so great. I have not remembered the title since....thanks for posting!
Went to summer camp at Camp Belknap 73, 74, and then High School at Brewster Academy, both in Wolfeboro.Gorgeous area, always love Winnipesaukee and hiking, skiing up in the Presidential Range. First Dead show 9/2/78, last 6/19/95 with many in between. Forever love the Grateful Dead...
My buddies and I discovered this song in high school, early 2000’s. One of my friends found this album in a stack of his dads old cds and we went to this camp site we used to party at. Once we found this jam I feel like we listened to it on repeat all night. To this day when I hear the opening riff my memory brings me back to that party at the camp site and the good times we had.
was at the Nassau Coliseum that night. a most incredible night. this is the song i want played at my memorial service, it best describes what i believe, down to my very soul.
Then it will be the song that the morning brings for you when you cross into that new different day. Lady Deadhead, I will see you at the end of the path, in the sunlit clearing, with this song being played
I was there that night and realizing in the moment that I was watching something really special.Loved it when I finally scored a bootleg of the entire second set , which is when Branford joined him. I also remember when Branford was on Johnny Carson relatively soon after the show. Johnny asked him how this unusual pairing occurred and what it was like . Branford had replied he was really impressed with the band and thankful of how they just sat back and let him shine. So, impressed was he by their playing he said afterwards he went out and bought all their albums in one shot.
My cousin gave me this record in the early '90s, I love every second of it, is a fantastic experience to listen to it, sometimes when I am at the beach and the mood is right, this song plays on my head without a warning, what a great feeling, it brings back so many great memories, enough said!. Music to lift your spirit.
Made these shows at the Greek... The band was extraordinarily tight and this version reflects it - it was perfect ... "high" doesn't quite cover it - it was totally surreal, the music, the atmosphere, the best of friends, the shrooms... everything. was. just. perfect.
Saw this jam live in so many shows.. Best memory was Denver CO... ~ 9pm and the full moon rising over the stands at MILE HIGH.. that is what I'm talking 'bout!!! :)
A very good friend of mine past away a couple of years ago. This was probably his favorite song.... EVER. Every month or so I listen to it and remember the good times we spent listening to this, dancing, celebrating life. Good times, indeed!!
My dad was an old school engineer. Everything by the book per se. This was playing in my car. He said "I really like this. Who is this John?" I said "it's really nice, isn't it?" "No doubt" he said back. "Dad, it's the Grateful Dead." What??!!" He said back. Great moment.
Back in the 90s my daily driver was a Mazda miata with Bose surround sound. Many long top down drives on twisty country roads with this tape in the deck and the system on full blast.
Sublime version. If you are an Eyes fan, the epitome for me is the magical Boston Garden 9/25/91 with Hornsby. Hands down the stand out of that show. They were inspired!!!
The first time I heard LLR I loved it but I never put a thought of a face I love to go with it until April 3, 2017. My elderly companion Mister a dark brown with greying hair toy poodle wandered from our home he and I share. Lost, deaf, blind weighing only 6lbs is alone, out there without me, and me alone without him. I thought of this song as I wandered amilisly looking for my loyal companion for 76 hours going in only to use the restroom and cry more. I still replace the fliers through the neighborhood hoping that some kind soul took him in and hasn't seen he is missed and loved. I lay in bed and I go to pull him near realizing he's not there and the rain comes rolling down my cheeks. I wish he were in the lines I had drawn, I'd gotten used to having him around. Mister, forever in my dream, love Mama.
I missed this night, I saw them at Nassau Coliseum in NY on one of the three nights they played. I remember it bc I was on the floor and they were pure Magic. I miss their run at MSG in the Fall and saw the 2nd to last show before Bret Mydland overdosed at Foxboro, Mass. THAT was one of the all time strangest trips I've ever had. I miss them terribly, their music has been their through the good, bad and the ugly for me and healed my soul. I used to put this song on as well as Jack Straw when on night watch sailing across the Atlantic on a 62 monohull. Jamming the dead with my foulies on sailing in a squall hand steering 4-5m waves in the middle of the Ocean. Other worldly man, seeing pods of dolphins swimming with the boat at first light, my best memories are of listening to the dead in the middle of the ocean, shit crew? Boat sinking? Captain is an asshole? Fuckit man, I got my tunes, I'm good.
DeadHead4458 Im no authority, but its one of the tightest tracks Ive heard the dead do live. Marsalis plays pretty much the entire 16 minutes, hearing him solo over Jerry's solo is mindblowing.
Thanks for posting. My first version of 'Eyes' I remember paying attention to. As such my favorite. Although I had friends who introduced me to the Dead I was at an African American College, Morgan State University, Baltimore USA when I discovered this and other Dead I would come to love. My white friend Bobby Merkley who was going to the school on minority scholarship (gotta love it) became a total dead head and since we hung out after English lit. class smoking and sharing about life I learned his music and he mine. Love this song. I guess it was all the Coltrane and sax I was listening to that inspired him to put me down with this song. I followed the dead on and off up to Gerry's last show. Still love the music. I am a stagehand now and did Ratdog in Washington DC February 2014. Yes I hung out on Shakedown Street but I couldn't party as..... well I was working. Ok maybe one balloon...
A simple Thank You. Those days are sadly long gone. No matter how we try, everyone missed the message. I’m old, despondent and still 15:29 wishing for the future we all strived for.
I was 15 years old and after seeing the boys play in Oakland Coliseum and Cal expo a few times this was the album my brothers and myself played over and over on the road and In between. This version really blew my whole universe open to what live music as Art and Entity really is and right there I was on the bus and Dead forever. Love and miss you jerry😘 Uncle Billy, I will catch as many Dead and Co. Shows as can. Aloha pu mehana
So, true. The LLR is pure excellance. My gf and I shared it together back in the 90s when this came out and although not together now we still share it with each other.
One of the best eyes of the world in the later years. Thanks for posting. I guess I need to get this on cd. My old copy was on cassette. I like anything Branford did with them.
Adding to my earlier comment since I cannot edit, or don't know how....I got in the car to drive back from our vacation after thinking of the line "wake up to find out you are the morning song"...and on the XM radio (which we only subscribed to for month on this trip) had the song and exact lyrics IN TIME and IN PLACE...talk about SYNCHRONICITY! Don't ask questions or search...just experience!
My Dad loves this but I don't understand it yet or how easy it is for Daddy to get into my phone and post comments and likes so that the Grateful Dead keep coming up in my suggestions. 😂love you Kassidy!

this particular recording of this song, has healed my soul time and time again
Could not agree more with this comment....

Brah this sequence was a hundred channels in 44khz that spent a month of Sundays in post production. Nothing less than a sonic Mona Lisa.
I had the same experience with my father-in-law coming down from a hike listening to JGB How Sweet It Is. I was speechless!
A perfect memory of you and your pops

Branford's mournful sax. Sheer bliss!

The greatest song ever written and this is absolutely the best version ever played. 20 minutes of goosebumps.

Saw this show too!!
i also was there a night i will never forget
Then it will be the song that the morning brings for you when you cross into that new different day.
Lady Deadhead, I will see you at the end of the path, in the sunlit clearing, with this song being played
This was branford 's best day.
Branford's sax blends perfectly with Jerry's guitar!
Cruising along on my bicycle with this on my headphones... March first 2024... Life is Golden with the Grateful Dead
Been to a bunch of shows. Owned 300+ boots back in the day. And this is still my favorite version!!
I love this version with Branford Marsalis!!!!!!!
This Eyes is purely magical. It takes me to a certain place in my mind, hard to put into words.
saxophone, keys, bass, guitar, vocals, drums - all perfect
No matter the time of year, this song is always nice to hear.
Jerry is 💯% magical and 100% real. This era can never be forgotten. Too good to be true at moments
So many layers
This jam could play for hours and it'll still be awesome.

this song is the only reason to keep on living. when confused find as many 'eyes' as you can, at once, and listen.....

10:46 Having listened to this version countless times, I still have to stop and listen to this riff over and over. Wow, just wow!
Absolutely and around 3:10 when Jerry bends that note always sticks out for me
This is one the most stirring songs of the entire Dead repituore. Simply beautiful, and magnificent. It gives me hope.
Made these shows at the Greek... The band was extraordinarily tight and this version reflects it - it was perfect ... "high" doesn't quite cover it - it was totally surreal, the music, the atmosphere, the best of friends, the shrooms... everything. was. just. perfect.
Brent added so much depth and soul to already great vocals. Missed just as much as Jerry.

I was there that night at Mile High.....such a beautiful night! :)
Excellent eyes. Even the album cover art is sensational.
Just beautiful...and beautiful sentiment.
Sometimes we live, no particular way, but our own. . . . What an amazing thing. The best after-work having a doobie song of a lifetime
Absolutely brilliant.
Sunlight reflected off a headstone. Unquenchable joy. Something irretrievable, and slipping further away with every heartbeat. . .
Exquisite. F**king exquisite.
My heart hurts it’s so good !
My daughter came into this world to this song , as I like to say, Without A Net, I love you Stephanie,
Wake up to find that WE ALL are THE EYES of THE WORLD!

Branford Marsalis's mother just passed away. Listen to this for her...
Beautiful song the Dead did.
Love the saxophone mixed and combined with Jerry's guitar work.

3:22 Hawaiian twang. Beautiful. Jerry was on another level for this jam.

Jerry where art thou??The only man besides Dad I love.

One of the best eyes of the world in the later years. Thanks for posting. I guess I need to get this on cd. My old copy was on cassette. I like anything Branford did with them.
Sir Branford took the Dead to a heretofore unrealized next level that puts the apple in my throat to this day.,.

The Dead are definitely one of the greatest rock bands ever.
Bill Graham's quote about the Dead: "they are not the best at what they do, they're the only ones that do what they do".
My favorite grateful dead song ever right here

No I don't like this, I LOVE THIS!
Right outside this lazy summer home
you ain't got time to call your soul a critic no.
Right outside the lazy gate of winter's summer home,
wond'rin' where the nut-thatch winters,
wings a mile long just carried the bird away.
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world,
the heart has its beaches, its homeland and thoughts of its own.
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the mornin' brings,
But the heart has its seasons, its evenin's and songs of its own.
There comes a redeemer, and he slowly too fades away,
And there follows his wagon behind him that's loaded with clay.
And the seeds that were silent all burst into bloom, and decay,
and night comes so quiet, it's close on the heels of the day.
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world,
the heart has its beaches, its homeland and thoughts of its own.
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the mornin' brings,
But the heart has its seasons, its evenin's and songs of its own.
Sometimes we live no particular way but our own,
And sometimes we visit your country and live in your home,
sometimes we ride on your horses, sometimes we walk alone,
sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own.
Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world,
the heart has its beaches, its homeland and thoughts of its own.
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the mornin' brings,
But the heart has its seasons, its evenin's and songs of its own.
With Wynton Marsalis! Terrific, best ever version.
It's his brother Branford. Wynton plays trumpet.
