My Father would blow smoke in my face and laugh when I would cough until I threw up. The only sympathy I got from him was "Oh suffer, thy wicked soul. An invalid lives forever." I told him he would pay someday. Later, he got a sore on his lip and a sore throat he couldn't get well. He went to Dr - who said it looked like throat and lip cancer and got him an appointment with a specialist. The specialist took a biopsy and the results came back pre-cancer. He wanted my sympathy so I told him I would give him the sane sympathy he gave me whenever I was sick "Oh suffer thy wicked soul - an invalid lives forever".

@@cesaravegah3787 My father was a evil, mean S.O.B. He had planned on killing my Mother, brother and his wife and two children (his grandsons) and me. He told my cousin he was planning on getting rid of his second wire in front of his second wife. A few hours later, he was fried by an electric fan he plugged in. Never did get to thank her.

All my aunts and uncles on my mother's side, including my mother. All 10 siblings. I hated visiting that side of the family. 10 people in an apartment or small house smoking with only 15 minutes between cigarettes was horrible. Life was made better after I could go outside by myself.

My parents both smoked like chimneys. My allergist told me they most likely had been a partial cause of my allergies. Nearly every adult I came in contact with smoked. Then, slowly, the places a person smoke began to contract. I was a teacher when smoking in the workplace was made illegal. A few of the older teachers retired rather than giving up smoking.
I recall going to a party (thrown by my g/f) where the hostess of the party put “don’t smoke signs). Some chain smokers refused to stop. Angry words were exchanged over that topic. Some chose to leave the party.

Glad she stood up for you unlike op's wife. It's her fault that her marriage failed because she refused to stand up for her child and her husband. That's good and sure way to get divorced is not standing up to their parent that is causing harm to their own child and disrespecting their partner. No self respecting nor loving partner should be acting like that and should be standing up for their family whether it's their parent or not.

To the last story it could be considered self defense (by legal terms). Since self defense is defined by defending yourself or another from bodily harm. He was preventing the damage second hand smoking would cause his daughter. And since it was an immediate concern the force would be considered justifiably legal in court.

Last story: Smokers can be insane about the "right" to poison others. My father had a longtime colleague who chain smoked from waking to bedtime and insisted it was his "right" to do so. The last time I saw old Jonesey was under the ER porch at the hospital I worked at, smoking through his tracheotomy tube and insisting that his cigarettes had nothing to do with his cancer!
He was a fine journalist, a devoted father and a generally good guy with a great sense of humour. When his face was mashed in an automobile accident and he needed reconstructive surgery, the last thing he said to the surgeon as the anasthesia took hold was, "Make me look like Bogart!" A genuinelyy good person with an addiction he could neither accept nor control.

My grandpa was the same way though he only ever smoked outside which wasn’t hard as he owned a farm and could easy walk out onto his back patio to smoke at any time. When he had to be on this breather thing that killed him since do to his worsening health condition he needed help getting around and my grandma and aunt took hit cigarettes away from him in hope of at least stopping his condition from worsening. Now if only they would of taken that pocket knife from him so we didn’t need to constantly bandage his hands when he messed up trimming his nails or wielding

About that smoking story--BOTH of my parents smoked for years & finally quit. I NEVER did as I found out that I have adult apnea. It's the same affliction that kills babies sometimes when they're only a few months old. As a child, I had severe bronchitis/asthma which dr said I would grow out of (I did at 12). However, the dr NEVER told my parents I must NEVER catch a cold as that would go to my lungs & I could die. Needless to say, I DID get the flu the winter after I grew out of it, & I ALMOST died because I couldn't breathe! Furious, my parents took me back to the dr, bawled the daylights out of the dr for not telling them! Even today I have to get flu shots to be safe.😊

Story 1 - It's amazing how damaged people will nominate themselves to police things unasked for, unwanted, and definitely untrained for in order to feel important. I work in a hospital by a notoriously rough road and have people in all the time that think they can order employees, including doctors, around...which is why we have a 24/7 police presence now.

I've a friend, who doesnt like people smoking in her house. She has a problematic relationship with booze, and doesn't like people drinking there, so I don't.
I was taught by my mother, how politeness and kindness cost me nothing but treating people well. It always amazes me how few people treat shop staff and food service people well. They always look surprised when you acknowledge them, pleasantly. People, go figure, which I have problems with on my best days. I'm on the spectrum, and don't read people well.

I have a life-threatening allergy to tobacco smoke. I never even knew it was •possible• until it happened to me. Tobacco smoke had always aggravated my asthma, but one day, my body had a full-on reaction, including asthma attack, swollen throat, unable to speak, etc. I now have to carry EpiPens with me everywhere and a miniature pharmscy of other medications. It’s insane.

Smoking Story: I can almost understand Ex-MiL risking her relationship over smokes...I don't condone or forgive her behaviour, but I can understand it...
Addiction can be impossible for some people to fight and Nicotine is MASSIVELY addicting...if Ex-MiL was a heavy smoker (1 or more packs per day), she might LITERALLY have not been able to go more than 15 minutes without a Nicotine Hit without suffering severe discomfort (Mental as well as Physical) from the beginning of withdrawal...
That doesn't mean however, she can just blatantly ignore OP's No Smoking In His House Rule...it just means every 15 minutes or so, she has to go outside to smoke...
