Very very good videos these right here! All hail to Mike and other guys over at M&M Motors for taking the time to make these videos. They helped me out a great deal today changing the rollers and pads on my 2003 A6.
Thanks for FCP Euro & Mike from M&M Motors. I found out the trick to hammer out the old rotor is amazing without removing the caliper bracket, that saved me so much time and make it simple. The rear brake on Audi is so compact with the lower suspension arms together. Thanks for sharing the tips. This also works for the A4 B7 chassis. One extra note on A4 B7, you have to remove the parking cable to access the lower caliper bolt.
This is the most informative video on RUclips about the rear brakes and I thank you because I did the brakes so much faster and confident after I watched this!!! Btw u can rewind calliper so much faster than I did it
@arcbky The bolts used in the video are the same on a 2002 S4. They're part #: WHT 002 437, give us a call if you're interested (877) 634-0063
It looks like there's two options for the rear rotors, 245mm and 255mm. If you know the size is 255mm you can check out the link I've just added to the description of this video to check out the 255mm rotors we offer at FCP Euro. Give us a call if you have any other questions 1-877-634-0063
That is a great point, we actually addressed it in our Volvo S60 Rear Brake Replacement Video, but you're absolutely right to point it out here. Thanks for commenting!
I'm sorry, no videos on that one yet, one of our technical sales guys may be able to give you a hand answering that question if you give us a call at 1-877-634-0063. Hope that helps.
I successfully changed the brakes. I had to remove the caliber brackets as you told, but it was such an easy job. Thanks to you and this video I managed well!
Thanks. I actually did search a little more on the internet and found them. Great videos! My husband successfully changed the rear rotors, rear brakes and front brakes. Your videos were very helpful.
Thanks for the update Peter, some models are a little more difficult to compress than others & renting the tool was certainly the way to go. Let us know how you fare otherwise.
You are absolutely the best. You are responsible for keeping my A6 happily rolling along.
Thank you so much for posting this you saved me hundreds of dollars that the dealer was going to charge. I have always changed my own brakes but something about working on my audi makes me nervous but you made it very simple. Thanks
That's actually a great idea, thanks for sharing!
Mike - Thanks for the excellent video. I used this as a guide to successfully do the rear brakes on my 2002 A6 this week.
You are the BEST video content creator I seen on break replacement. You are skillful. Many thumbs ups. I will subscribe.
We appreciate the kind words!
That's great advice for everyone, even a simple bungee cord can go a long way. Thanks!
Very thorough. I watched your front brake video to do my Brother-In-Law's (front) brakes and this looks 20x simpler.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
If not taken off the bracket bolts works . Then your the man . Can’t thank you enough your the best you know your stuff thanks again much appreciate 😊
Yes, Mike is awesome. Glad we could help!
wow pretty outstanding . I thought i was going to have to undo the ebrake cable to wind it in , so glad I watched this ..
It's very similar. If you're unable to remove the disc without removing the caliper bracket it's only an extra 2 bolts behind the hub. Give us a ring at 1-877-634-0063 if you've got any questions.
hi - tryed mounting the caliper , without the disc - secured it with strips - and the job turning the piston back was much easier , even with at manufactured socket to the job -
Remember to renew the caliber if the seals are damaged .
Fantastic video
I did this repair today. I used a large C clamp to put force on the piston and then used an angle grinder key to turn the piston. Managed to push the piston in with only 3 full rotations.
@fidiusjwhoopie You're right to suggest it, this customer of Mike's is going to do it soon, it might be another video.
I actually don't know what they are off hand but I'm sure a quick Google search would turn them up!
You're right to notice we didn't take the cap off, you don't have to but it's certainly a good idea to make sure compressing the piston is not going to overflow anything.
thanks FCPgroton. I hammer the old rotor more heavily and I can tell the rotor was moving, then I carefully use a flat screwdriver head to pry the plastic ring out. the rotor comes out without problem. The plastic part is Gorilla Automotive 60-5710 Wheel Hub Centric Rings! (I google it)
another tips: I bought a can of penetrating oil from homedepot, sprayed the caliper bolts and rotor hub, then leave it overnight.
It helps bolts removing and cleans the rust.
Awesome videos, thank you. I just replaced the front and rear pads and rotors on my 2002 A6 Avant and it was very straightforward.
You're welcome!
Great video thank you!! Helped on my Quattro. Thanks again for taking the time to show us DIY's
Excellent video, Mike. Good to know I'm not the only guy out there who has to make a silk purse out of a Sow's ear. I'd make the car owner own up on a new dust boot though, that thing was fugly for sure. Took note of cleaning up the mating surfaces to quiet noise. Will be revisiting some key points on the Passsat and my domestic Ram truck on this side of the pond. Thanks!
There is just one thing worth mentioning; When you press the caliper pistons back, take notice of the break fluid reservoir level, both before and during the operation. Pushing the pistons back will push fluid back into the reservoir and thereby fill it up. Just siphon off fluid as it fills up when you push the pistons. Had a scratch my head moment cause of this. Couldn't get the pistons back far enough, though with the cap of it was a whole lot easier.
Should work fine on your car, providing it's from the same year range. If you're just doing the pads and rotors no reason to worry about the fluid, just make sure it doesn't overflow your reservoir under the hood when you compress the pistons. Hope that helps!
Nice, Simple, easy to follow instructions. Thank you!
They will be a little more snug, as no parts have been worn down but it EDIT: shouldn't be a "tight" fit per se. Compare them to your original pads, make sure they're identical except for the ware. If you jam them in there there's a high possibility they'll seize, if you decide they're proper make sure to put some grease around where the caliper contacts the pad. It'll help make sure they move freely.
Excellent! Glad we could help.
It could be that your pads have stuck, or it could be that the caliper locked, that's really the only thing that could make the calipers stick closed or tight. It also depends on your model and if you have a mechanical emergency brake, if you do, your cables can stick also causing the same problem. Give us a ring if you would like some more help 1-860-388-9001
Try taking a file to clean the rust off of the caliper, it sounds like you might have some buildup keeping the pad from moving freely.
Are all A6 Quattro rear rotors mounted on the hub assembly like in the video? I have a 2006 A6 Quattro, and the rotor is solidly frozen onto the hub, trying to tap the rotor with a hammer didn't break it loose. I didn't want to pound on it too hard just in case it's captive and part of the hub assembly like on some cars; since I wasn't sure, I thought I'd do some research first.
Guess a large puller is the way to go. Didn't want to hammer on it to avoid possible damage to the hub bearings.
Grease Monkey...Thanks for your email. Did exactly that kind of D&C, even cleaned slide rust off with a flat file. Replaced old calipers, near 100K, with remanufacturer. Decent prices on the web after core return. Found some very old Lubriplate left behind by an Army Vet., and ensured it was well used on slides and carrier pins. Peace of mind knowing that all caliper components are new. Rebuilt them myself in the past, but an oldgoat now, so don't have all that ambition with other things piling up in queue.
Thanks again for your heads up, follow up.
It's called a caliper piston rotating tool, most local stores, even Wal-Mart might carry them.
Very good video why didn't you replace the rubber boot around the calliper piston looks torn and what torque specs for the calliper pins and do you put silicone on them as well. specs
Excellent video by the way! When you rewound the caliper piston did you take off the cap for the master cylinder? Or is it not necessary to do that?
Do you have any videos on how to change rear pads on a 2004 Audi A8 my concern is with hurting the electronic ebrake when collapse the caliper as i have read is a no no. I watched you video on the front brakes that you did and was able to change my front pads with ease. Now I would like to do the rear. Great video!! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in Advance .. T
this is great. just used this video to fix my rear brakes. thanks!!
I'm terribly sorry for the trouble, it's hard to say what went wrong without knowing more information about your car/order, give our team a call at 1-877-634-0063 and we'll be sure to get everything righted ASAP.
True Professional - Thanks for a perfect video, second time I've done these but still referred back ! Why...? Because of 3:07 -3:10 -Make certain the sliders on the Caliber bracket are free moving ( Just as free as your pads at 6:09 - 6:10 ) Mine were SEIZED on the left side and not discovered by the last "professional" shop that let me have pre-failed brake job !! Thanks for all your Vids I haven't a local Professional I can currently trust !!
We're really glad you find our videos helpful!
As long as you're matching your current size I can't imagine you would need any other info, but give us a ring at 1-877-634-0063 and our technical guys can tell you for sure.
I try to to regrease the slide pins on B5 A4 for added insurance. Great video.
Starting 7:50 I see that the piston rubber collar is completely torn and MUST be replaced.
In many states it's illegal to install the caliper back with this defect.
I would replace the caliper, because it may seaze any time because of sand and dust already collected through the torn collar.
That's a hub centric spacer for the wheels, it should not be in your way. If you have no rotor retianing screw going through your rotor, then you just need a bigger hammer!
Excellent video--one huge problem: The brake piston on my '96 A4 just spins and does not retract. How can I get it to retract so I can finish the job? I'm using a socket with the square adapter and have the caliper c-clamped to the axle for support.
Nope, we didn't have to because we never disconnected the brake lines. Hope that helps.
@PAWLEE71 Luckily Mike does much more than brake jobs. .
thank you this is so clean and nice work
I love your videos, but why you didn't use some anti-noise paste (sorry didn't now the right word for it, i'm german)
Great video! Do you know the torque values that Audi recommends?
Thank you so much!! The part when you take the disc off....Genius!! Lol
You're welcome, Christian!
From Portugal, thanks.
I would need to do that job for my audi a6 c4 -95. Do you have experience of that? Is the rear brake disc as easy to remove as audi a6 c5 -00?
second vid on audi brakes ive watched this guy do ,,, not replacing the dust seal ruined the job ,,, but the rest of the vid is very good
tom thompson I thought the gloves ruined it, lol
Great video.
would you by chance know if the bolt sizes and whatnot are the same as a 2002 S4? I know there are a lot of similarities between the A6 and the S4.
Thank you! Had the e-brake piston almost all the way out. Piston is a moth... to get back in, even with a special "pro" brake tool kit. Why is the right rear shown so different from the left rear? Left rear wore to zero while the right still has a decent amount of pad. No, didn't leave the e-brake on.
One of your slides, pads, or piston got stuck. Just make sure you disassemble and clean everything up really well.
Where to get the bracket for turn back the pistons? Really smart item :-)
We have a basic one here: www.fcpeuro.com/products/brake-caliper-retractor-tool-cta-1465
And another here: www.fcpeuro.com/products/dual-piston-brake-caliper-compressor-25750
did you need to do any bleeding?
there is a plastic wheel hub ring on my audi. I am not sure if the rotor stuck or because of the plastic ring clip on the rim of the rotor. I cannot remove the rotor, any suggestion?
Can you remove the rear rotor on the B6 S4 the same way, without unbolting the carrier?
Unfortunately not, the carrier would have to come out to get to the rotor. Only way to go.
What tool are you plugging into the computer that allows you to turn off the electric parking brake, and where can i find it? I've visited OBD II websites but they seem to have 30 or more different types. Thanks
I have an Audi A6 quattro 99 I changed the brakes getting new rotors and calipers as well. The top side of my caliper bracket is so tight against the rotor the wheel won't move how do I fix it
Greets from dublinCheers for great video on front and back job on a6 c5.Is there any adjustment of handbrake/park brake needed after install of discs and new pads?
Thanks
No adjustment needed.
I'm in the process of doing this on a 1998 A6. I stopped when I went to put in the new pads, and they are a tight fit. The old pads slide in freely, but the new ones are much tighter. Is this normal?
Will do. Thank you very much.
yo i found that cube tool. but its too small for this size. guessing its a metric and not a us standard?
hey whats the name of the tool you Used to push the caliber back with ?
i have an audi a6 station wagon. Would it also work on my car? also do i need to bleed my brake?
Thanks Dude. Well Done
Just did this on my 01 a6 2.7t. Went to drive it and they are stuck. What could this be, I dont think the calipers are bad yet.
I have a 2002 A6 Quattro 4.2 that has a 269mm rotor disc. It is too big to remove without taking off the caliper mounting bracket. Any suggestions on how to remove those pesky caliper mounting bolts? Can't get them to budge with my electric impact wrench.
why didn't you replace the rubber that was chewed up on the piston???
if you buy the generic tool you might have to grind it a little , mine wasnt from Audi so didnt quite fit, a few seconds on the grinder and it fit like a glove :)
What is the name of the square tool that you used to push and turn on the caliper??
Does this work for a 2003 Audi A6 Quattro 3.0?
why did you not replace that damaged, torn seal on the caliper piston?
great video thanks
Hi is it expensive fixing a 2001 audi A6 2.7
They're tight when I put them in before the calipers. Like at 6:00 in the video.
You know before you push back the puck, should you put lube on it... the rubber gasket behind the piston? You didn't do it, does it make a difference or not...
Rented a spiral piston tool to compress the piston. Don't see how anyone can compress the piston without one, at least on my A4.
im assuming it be same thing for an audi a4 2003
Thanks very good!!!
Do I need to replace the slider bolts that hold the caliber each time I do the rear brakes? I noticed that some brake pads come with the bolts and some do not.
Hello Garry, you can reuse the caliper slider bolts. It's recommend to apply a thin coat of brake lubricant during assembly.
Thanks this worked perfectly! I had some issues - I had a seized slider bolt on one side so I replaced the bracket and on the other side I had a stuck parking brake, but penetrating oil solved that. Now I know why my parking brake lever was loose!
You should have taken the sliding pins out and check the condition of the pins and the grease. Also, as someone else pointed out, with the rubber seal busted like that, the piston will rust shut in no time. It's all about making the people coming back to the shop as often as possible, isn't it?
hey im having a problem with my 2001 audi a6 2.8l only got 94k on it. im getting code po300 po304 po305 po306 po345 po156 i change the spark plugs and wires but still having the same problem any ideas also i only get misfires when the rpm is lower then 1 if its 1 or higher everything runs fine
Countless things can be causing a random misfire on this application. Would lean towards the ignition coil on this motor, more often then not the culprit. Would guess that's likely causing a random cylinder problem like this.
We did, just not in the video.
So we dont have to bleed the brakes?
Hi Desi, if you are not opening the hydraulic system, then you are able to just swap out rotors and pads.
@@fcpeuro ok good to know because Audi tells me i need the vag in order to do the brakes thank you i appreciate it.
Do you need to bleed the brakes in an 01 Audi A6?
Hello, it's a good idea to bleed the brakes to remove air from the line and to firm up the pedal feel.
FCP Euro Thanks.
I have a special tool to turn the piston in, its turning but it's not going in and I'm doing exactly what you said, any other ideas please, thank you.
Frozen caliper, if it does not retract then it is likely that you have a frozen piston and as such a defective caliper.
FCP Euro Wow, thank you for such quick response. But with much effort I was able to get the piston in. It was extremely difficult though. But now that everything is back together, my rear breaks are still dragging to the point where it stops my car on a flat surface while in drive with no break or gas on.... any ideas on this please???? Thank you so much....
Unfortunately, your caliper is most likely the culprit. Even though you were able to get the piston to go back in, it is most likely stuck again and will need to be replaced. It will just eat away at your pads until it is flat with the surface of the rotor. Do your brakes smell really bad when you drive down the street?
FCP Euro Yes they do smell. I thought it might be the caliper also 😕
FCP Euro Thank you for all the help good sir. GOD BLESS you.
this "mechanic" even forgot to do the most basic yet important task.
You must never let caliper hang on brake hose.
Sound
