When their career is finally over, U2 will not only leave behind one of the biggest footprints in the history of rock, they'll leave behind one of the biggest footprints in the history of music. Their 'competition' isn't just rock legends like The Beatles, Elvis, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, and The Rolling Stones-- it's people like Mozart, Beethoven, Duke Ellington, and George Gershwin. Anyone who doesn't understand this needs to listen to U2's ENTIRE catalog, which rivals anyone's-- EVER.
This is one of those songs, (and there is at least one or two on every U2 album), that sneak up on you, and despite not getting a ton of airplay, grows into your soul til the point that it may be one day put on the mount rushmore of U2s best work. Like a previous poster said, this song is a great on cd or youtube, but after being lucky enough to see it live, it was more like a religious experience. Even seeing it on youtube still brings chills. How do these guys continue to have that effect?
this song , i heard it a couple of times when the album came out but wasn't paying attention. Its BY FAR their best song since 2005. (atomic had great songs)
its a tragedy bono is pushing fauci, war in ukraine, hes unfortunately either blinded, threatened or in bed with the globalists. Best songwriter of last 45 years.
The last part of the lyrics: Life is short It’s the longest thing you’ll ever do The worst of the curse Was that your dreams came true God is a mirror in which each man sees himself God is a place where you don’t need any help When I first met you, your face was like snow What about wherever you wanted to go Your face, your grace, your lipstick trace Your case as you put it down 8.17 on the ground Your faith in a clown Don’t leave me now Don’t leave me now Alone in the sun Don’t leave me now Alone in the sun
Andrea Maria Szenti Wonderful, thank You, one little remark, verse 6, I guess, is "hell is the place where you don't need any help." Which make sense, he'll is a selfish, "me" place. Others - major U2 websites had that part wrong as well- no biggie. Just wanted corrected, because it is the unbelievable poem, I cry each time I see it- and have seen it probably 100 of times by now. Each time! God Bless ❤️🍀🎶✌️
This is prime U2 era. Im 25 years old. This is my favorite all time band. I dont recall exactly how, I wish I could, but my dad would listen to them all the time on drives and what not. Didnt take long for me to latch on to their unique sound. I was perhaps in the first or second grade. Finally got to take the trip to TO from Buffalo, NY and saw them live on my 18th birthday -- a night forever engrained in my memory. This song in specific would soothe me as a continuously anxious younger kid. The tranquil vibe. Thank you U2. Thank you so much. I will die on the hill that U2 is the best band of ALL time. Longevity, all 4 are masters at their individual crafts/instruments -- scandal free (dont even bring up the ITunes thing), drug free, all original members. Cant say enough.
The iTunes wasn't a scandal. It brought them a new generation of fans. How comes Beyonce did it before them but she never got grief? Grief from dumb people who are too lazy to switch off automatic downloads as soon as they got a new phone. They are also too lazy to lock their doors before they go out and wonder why they have been burgled. Nowadays people who don't switch it off receive a new album every week
This song is like a fine wine. For me it has gotten and continues to get better with time. The ending with Edge playing those beautifully solemn notes and Bono's added verse is the best part of this song. Goosebumps. And I love the fact that Larry contributes on vocals...
What a beautifully deep song. The struggle to be open, begging to be real, begging to get past ourselves and see ourselves in connection to everyone around us, the vision over visibility, seeing past everyone's external skin "bodies" and seeing what unites us all, our loves our fears. We have far more in common with each other than we allow ourselves to feel because we love our separateness. It's gives us a sense of control, of security, even though it's a false sense because ultimately it's lonely in the end to be a soul who keeps their heart guarded, to keep a certain distance, to never let a person fully in. And we hate it in ourselves but too afraid to relinquish it.
AdventuresOfTheKanFam so true, so beautiful and sad when you realize it. Every failure to connect becomes a hidden intention. It's dangerous to live a life like that.
I tied myself with wire To let the horses run free Playing with the fire Until the fire played with me The stone was semi-precious We were barely conscious Two souls too smart to be In the realm of certainty Even on our wedding day We set ourselves on fire Oh God, do not deny her It's not if I believe in love If love believes in me Oh, believe in me At the moment of surrender I folded to my knees I did not notice the passers-by And they did not notice me I've been in every black hole At the altar of the dark star My body's now a begging bowl That's begging to get back, begging to get back To my heart And to the rhythm of my soul And to the rhythm of my unconsciousness To the rhythm that yearns To be released from control I was punching in the numbers at the ATM machine I could see in the reflection A face staring back at me At the moment of surrender Of vision over visibility I did not notice the passers-by And they did not notice me I was speeding on the subway Through the stations of the cross Every eye looking every other way Counting down 'til the pentecost At the moment of surrender Of vision of over visibility I did not notice the passers-by And they did not notice me
Saw them in Philly this summer. This was the last song of the show. To say the show completely altered my state of mind would be an understatement. It was hands down the greatest experience of my life. Dont go through life without seeing them live, folks. You can watch all the youtube videos you want but there nothing like hearing 100,000 people singing and chaninting together.
When I first heard this, I thought, wow, this is really good, then I realized it is very deep. It's about a heroin addiction and crashing. It's about loosing everything you have, including loved ones and yourself. Having been there, not heroin, but alcohol, I fell in love with this song. I am a huge U2 fan, maybe the biggest, many of their lyrics are spiritual, but also deal with life and it's struggles. Having been the A17 on the ground a few times, I love this song because of the deepness
yes ,you are so clever, i have a addict on diazepam or valium i'ts susch a struggle to get rid of ,i am from Holland so my englisch is not do good but everything is wright, i am very sick i have tininitus and this is making it imposseblem to get rid of, everynight,i am in hel al the words he is saying, oh my god i'ts makes me screaming, i am thinking about ending my live because i have a voice who is saying terrible things i would never do that but i can't see a soloution anymore, iets about an addictian of gambebeling i have other things,i feel the same as you thanks for youre message i am so lost and alone u2 is for me God
10 years later and the ending rap still moves me. This band is very courageous sometimes. "This song is near to our hearts so we'll play it as the closer instead of a warhorse rocker song like Vertigo. Damned if it's a slow moving ballad that's quite unknown and this is a stadium of 50,000 people. We know it's a great song so we'll play it!"
I have been a fan of these, four gentlemen form Ireland, for many years. I've been recently going through older songs or songs that i never really payed attention to. This is now one of my favorite songs, actually there's a couple of them. My only wish, is to see them live, once! U2 The greatest band in the world. The greatest live band in the world...enough said
I absolutely love this song as well as u2 entire carreer . I had the chance to attend at U2 360 twice and went crazy when listening to this one and other masterpieces. Now i've gone through a tough moment in my life , been fighting more than hard for over 3 years but i think i've finally reached the moment of surrender 😢
Bono singing with an attitude! Love it. And edge this is up there with love is blindness.. watching Larry sing is great too!!!god how many people can relate to this song..yes! Love the scream at the end!
Thanks for sharing this. Fantastic song. Still love watching this on DVD. I went to one of the Toronto shows in 2011. Best concert I have ever saw. Truly a magical night. Please come back to Canada soon. We miss you all and really could use some good news to talk about amongst all the uncertainty in this country. 😎👍🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 U2 Forever.
Please never seperate or leave this world! It would be a such an empty place wíthout you here! Everyone of you is so amazing on stage! Thank you, thank you, thank you for the best live performances in my life!
Words cannot express what its like to see this band live, in person, when they play their back catalogue along with future classics like this song. The raw emotion and passion drips and pours with every lick and verse. I get chills listening to moment of surrender, especially when performed live. Of the newer material its the one i keep going back to. You cannot replace God or love with songs & verse, but you can replace everything else. I would imagine this is what that sounds like.
This is unreal live, up there with the greatest U2 songs. Wish they played this on tours post 360. The passionate fury in Bono’s voice on the entrance - “Tied myself with wire” - gives me chills
This live performance is better than on the album. You know it's a special band. But Bono's voice is beyond special, otherworldly, a gift to this world.
Watching this performance and listening to this song in the darkest hours of night makes me feel like everything is going to be alright. U2 are special and this is such a special song. 💗
When you see a performance like this you are really able to connect emotionally to the music, something all musicians should strive to do in my opinion
JEEEZ how do they come up with songs like this 30 years after starting out. most bands 10 years in would struggle to come up with anything new yet thease guys keep bringing it to the table
This is a great masterpiece! This song, already beautiful even on the album, reaches here very high peaks of pathos and poignant meaning. There is no equal, this is truly unattainable
This song is amazing and at the same time very spooky...its hard not to be moved when watching this video or listening to this especially in a live setting. The spoken word at the end that begins "life is short but it's the longest thing you'll ever do...." is very haunting. We are merely human, flesh & blood with some bones in the mix, this song reminds us of the soul. WIthout it we all melt away eventually...the spirit remains....give into the spirit. This is U2 at or very near their best.
Wow. Ranks up there, U2. Almost as great as the David Letterman rendition. Now that one... brought tears to my eyes. I know it was for their friend from INXS, but absolutely could've been for me. Thank God, I saw the Light. Love U2.
By far one of their greatest songs, studio version is fantastic but it’s live when it really comes to life! I used to think that this song would have fitted nicely with their Zooropa album.
Oscar Wilde, William Blake who wrote Songs Of Innocence and Experience. Two of U2 best albums.
I absolutely love them and I am a hood black women from the projects. There move me with there music. So beautiful
Word.
1st they'll do a bluegrass album. A new challenge 👍
agree
This is a masterpiece. This song is beyond feeling. U2 is on another level.
Do you like the version from Nick Mulvey?
@@Jinjukei not much
Quem não gosta de U2 e de animais é ruim frio e psicopata
Yet people say No Line was a bad album... this is brilliance. I hear classic U2 in that album.
Rez sheer beauty. Only for very selective souls
zooropa and pop are criminally underrated too
NLOTH is top 3 favorite U2 albums , this song is top 10. It’s amazing especially love ❤️
I loved that album
No line is a class album
✨If you *FEEL* this masterpiece as deeply as I do then you’ll agree with me that this is possibly one of U2’s finest ✨
Epically haunting. Love this version.
This is one of those songs, (and there is at least one or two on every U2 album), that sneak up on you, and despite not getting a ton of airplay, grows into your soul til the point that it may be one day put on the mount rushmore of U2s best work. its a rare gift. theyve done it to me since 81/2 when i saw Gloria on MTV.
this song , i heard it a couple of times when the album came out but wasn't paying attention. Its BY FAR their best song since 2005. (atomic had great songs)
its a tragedy bono is pushing fauci, war in ukraine, hes unfortunately either blinded, threatened or in bed with the globalists. Best songwriter of last 45 years.
I totally agree with that
The last part of the lyrics:
Life is short
It’s the longest thing you’ll ever do
The worst of the curse
Was that your dreams came true
God is a mirror in which each man sees himself
God is a place where you don’t need any help
When I first met you, your face was like snow
What about wherever you wanted to go
Your face, your grace, your lipstick trace
Your case as you put it down
8.17 on the ground
Your faith in a clown
Don’t leave me now
Don’t leave me now
Alone in the sun
Don’t leave me now
Alone in the sun
Andrea Maria Szenti Wonderful, thank You, one little remark, verse 6, I guess, is "hell is the place where you don't need any help." Which make sense, he'll is a selfish, "me" place. You know it’s a good song when you see Larry sing his heart out!

Love this song. One of their best.
I really love this song too. Bono is just so much on top of bringing the emotion to songs.
What a beautifully deep song.

Life is short but it's the longest thing you'll ever do...
*Michael Scott voice* "That's what she said!"
The worse, the curse was that your dreams came true.....
Arguably U2's greatest song.........
This is such an amazing song, it brings tears to my eyes.
Probably one of my favorite songs ever.
Simply amazing, what a poet Bono is,and Edge is gifted musically
I tied myself with wire
To let the horses run free
Playing with the fire
Until the fire played with me
The stone was semi-precious
We were barely conscious
Two souls too smart to be
In the realm of certainty
Even on our wedding day
We set ourselves on fire
Oh God, do not deny her
It's not if I believe in love
If love believes in me
Oh, believe in me
At the moment of surrender
I folded to my knees
I did not notice the passers-by
And they did not notice me
I've been in every black hole
At the altar of the dark star
My body's now a begging bowl
That's begging to get back, begging to get back
To my heart
And to the rhythm of my soul
And to the rhythm of my unconsciousness
To the rhythm that yearns
To be released from control
I was punching in the numbers at the ATM machine
I could see in the reflection
A face staring back at me
At the moment of surrender
Of vision over visibility
I did not notice the passers-by
And they did not notice me
I was speeding on the subway
Through the stations of the cross
Every eye looking every other way
Counting down 'til the pentecost
At the moment of surrender
Of vision of over visibility
I did not notice the passers-by
And they did not notice me
