Being a Russian person, I don't even feel surprised. Hollywood is the same, common Russian people from normal families do not exist there . We're all either prostitutes or mafia. Or drunks, how could I forget. I'm honestly afraid to even visit SK 'cause I heard when you're asked the "Are you Russian" question (especially by older people) it's time to get away fast.

I'm also well aware of the fact that everyone who speaks Russian is a Russian for foreigners when in reality it's not the case at all. I wrote that I'm not surprised, nor angry or anything. The only thing I'm not ok with is random people assuming a tourist is a prostitute when there are NO signs for that, neither in their clothes nor in behaviour. And I've seen videos where western (not even Russian, but white and blond ofc) girls tell how older Korean people (even women sometimes) come to them asking if they are Russian and asking about their... hm... price probably. Honestly, I wouldn't even know how to react.

It used to be the same in Japan.. around 2010 I was asked the „Russian“ question two or three times - I’m not even Russian, just a blond European girl. But it got much better in recent years. I hope it will be the same in Korea. What makes me angry is that this American actress is ok with playing these roles and even plays into the stereotype by having a „Russian picture folder“ : /
It's definitely an annoying problem: I've lived in Korea for a year and a half and I get asked this sometimes. It's mostly drunk, older men who ask so I usually stare them down until they leave me alone or walk away. There's a Russian bar in the building next to my job so I guess it's not surprising that I'd get approached as a white woman, but it's really stupid that the stereotype persists that any younger white woman is probably a Russian, with the implication that they're a hostess or prostitute. Especially since Russia is a massive, ethnically diverse country.

asian boss needs someone like hiroko for korea. this interviewer doesn't feel genuine, inviting, or even very professional. she has a tabloid journalist vibe.
I feel that although some of the stories are disheartening, the situations from which they come from are not exclusive to the Korean movie industry or the Korean beauty standard. Being an actor is the same anywhere you go, regardless of how good of an actor you are, if you do not fit the "look" that they are going for with a certain role, chances are you will not get it. Why do you think there's always debate when it comes down to 'Big Name' actors being cast to play an iconic comic book character, it's all about fitting the look and feel of the character.

Bingo. Because as an Asian foreigner who came to Korea for acting, its even harder because foreigner = white or black, etc. So as people who did study acting it’s just a visual game. It is hard because most post are looking for white. I even talked to white actors who said they only look for white it’s never able skills. Which is sad but I think things will change

Asian boss interviews usually provide a more insightful and detailed perspective, but this one felt pretty superficial imo. Also, it might be a preference thing but I really didn’t like the interviewer’s style here, her reactions were too over the top and kinda made me cringe.
The interviewer was talking about that both actors were told that they need to lose weight. The problem was that the segments were placed differently as the guy was interviewed first, then the girl.

She was raised in Korea from when she was young and did a lot of her schooling in Korean so it's nearly a native language for her. Hence why even her English sounds like it has a Korean accent.
I'm interested, what dramas has she been in? The only drama I can remember where I really liked the foreign actor was Michael Blunck, in Assorted Gems. I haven't seen him in anything since. I was really sad as I really wanted his character to end up with So Yi-hyun's character as their chemistry was really good. In fact, if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have been able to finish the drama.
i remember studying some media class in university, isn't people watching movies and dramas tend to visualize themselves as one of the casts? when you look too different from your targeted viewer, it is nearly impossible to make an impact
7:05 - 7:41 the reactions and follow up questions of the interviewer are just bad, I feel like Asian Boss could’ve done a better job. They should’ve at least done some research on who the actors are and what films they played in prior to doing this interview. The message of this video is not very clear and it someone gives off a bad image of foreign actors in Korea. Especially the part were Carson is being interviewed. I’m sure there’s more to tell about being a foreign actor in Korea. I don’t like that they focused on why Carson is mainly getting roles of russian girls. I don’t know... some AB videos are just really good and some are very disappointing...

This is a question that Asian Boss could go to the streets and ask the people of Korea, How do you like foreign actors in your movies, kdramas or TV shows. I'm surprised you haven't done this to expand on this video. I loved Mr. Sunshine because of the acting, story line and the many languages that were specifically spoken within the story plot.
No offence, the lady speaks the truth. From my experienced I know that Korean in general looks only for handsome guys and beautiful girls, they don't care about your smartness, how much experiences you got and how much skillful your are. They don't care about the quality and skills that you have that can be very effective in job but their priority is only appearance. Maybe that's the reason why Korean has a lot of surgeries. This has to be stopped.

Appearance has always been important, but if you didn't have natural beauty before, you could supplement it with fashion, style, money, or intelligence. Getting a job in Korea is insanely competitive and beauty is very important. Getting your foot in the door is difficult. If your resume isn't outstanding, you rely on appearance. Multiple studies around the world have shown that pretty people get more benefits and promotions so it is definitely a factor. Promotions in Korea are often about networking and seniority rather than job performance. Now when it comes to dating and social status... Money and appearance reign supreme. Add in the availability and relative safety of plastic surgery, it is damn near an epidemic. Everything you mentioned are industries that do value intelligence and innovation (technology) but that is one small slice of the Korean pie.

As a Korean-Canadian actor based in Vancouver, I found this report extremely interesting both as a working actor and as a student of sociology (Thank you @Asian Boss for the report and to Joey (Daniel) and Carson for your candid insights!). It has been argued that mass media maintains the privileges of certain groups (e.g. In North America: male, white and wealthy) by creating and perpetuating stereotypes of subordinate groups like women, visible minorities, visibly obese, LGBTQ+, working-class, the aged, etc. in dramas and other types of media. Assuming that Joey (Daniel) and Carson are considered members of a subordinate group in South Korea, I wonder how they are being used by the K-drama machine to perpetuate stereotypes in South Korea?
idk why they want to be foreign actors/tress in the first place. seriously, netflix, iflix, all those american,british dramas are getting better every year. whilst korean showbiz is just about mukbang or boy/girlband.
I've lived in Korea for 10 years and have known a few famous foreign actors in Korea and many trying to become popular. A lot of them are one-trick ponies, just fall into it, or just decide to try to make it in Korea for whatever reason but aren't really talented. Most give up after a few years. Due to visa issues, they CAN'T be exclusively performers and have to have a an actual paying job and visa sponsorship, making availability an issue. Many of the super serious and ambitious people I have known left to pursue their careers in their home countries after just a few years of dealing with the 'industry' here. Everything these actors said, I have heard from multiple other people. My husband asked if I wanted to try to get on TV here. I've been in a few things to help support some friends, but have zero desire after hearing and seeing how their life went, even the successful ones. I have been recognized a few times over the years but I don't think they actually recognized me, they more likely mistook me for another foreign personality that was popular.

So as an inspiring. Actress myself in Korea (I’m Asian), I can tell you this- there is a difference between those who want to be actors ( who did go to school, studies it or is self studying) vs people who are “models” extra who are doing it for fun or extra cash or where scouted on the street. You will see a massive difference in delivery and depth of a character ( even if it’s a extra role,,there’s a reason why certain people stand out) . If we do compare say Hollywood vs Korea..in Korea a lot of people are scouted on the spot which is why the acting is beyond cringe. In Hollywood there is scouting but even for small parts the audition process is not easy. And those that are really successful, they weren’t scouted and really wanted to acting since they were born. So that passion and drive can really be seen in bringing characters to life, not you as a person reciting memorized lines. And which is why the best actors in the world disappear when they become that character. In short, real acting = it’s not about you, it’s about the story and you’re just a little piece to help tell it:) So I do hope people will be casted for skills and passion over looks. In kdrama there’s a lot of good looking korean actors but a lot of horrible acting ..horrible horrible acting too. So it isn’t fair to be so harsh to these two peeps in the video... So when I see the supporting small actors slowly start getting recognition(aka the character that we’re casted to be ugly etc)...it give hope that things are turning around-looks are still important but it’s slowly changing... for the better I hope:) And also would be nice to be able to buy food lol
popcorn pop unfortunately, looks is a large part of it. “Crazy rich Asian” the main character isn’t even an actor. And he did fine. He did a better job in my opinion than the lead female character who is an actor.
but in terms of casting people as actors who are not trained actors, its the same with "teachers". every foreigner can be english teacher without being trained as a teacher. so there is a problem with how foreigners are seen regarding their education in general!
Ugh, I ask when I go on interviews if they want a teacher or babysitter. They always say teacher, then get mad when I set basic rules and enforce them as a teacher NEEDS to do. Then they visit a month or two after I start and are shocked at how amazing my students are. Amazing what happens when you aren't a drill master but give expectations, help them teach those expectations, and watch them exceed. I have yet to receive any helpful "training" or teaching tips other than "give them candy" as well 🙄
I also find it ironic that Koreans seem to think that foreigners can't act like... have you seen kdramas? The acting in 99% of them is unbelievably bad, Korean actors included 😂😂😂

I'm ridiculously excited when I'm watching a drama and see a foreign actor with more than a single, mumbled line or the "We are a group of foreign businesspeople. We will laugh and nod and smile while we're talked to until we're in the background. Then we will murmur amongst ourselves so we look like we're talking even though you'll hear no audio from us." I especially love when they have speaking lines in Korean. IDK why but the English lines always sound really unnatural and strained?
Hollywood is acknowledging South Korean acting with SAG awards. Would be nice if the same thing could be mirrored in South Korea for American actors there. I think of my favorite American TV actors and most are not handsome. Hollywood actresses experience a whole range of conceived or preconceived bias, from being too pretty to too middle-aged or older. Aging actors generally are more accepted in movies.

What I'm disappointed about with Asian {& Bollywood} movies is *ALLOT* of the time they're not scripted in English and the subtitles are left not long enough on the screen to properly read. *SAD* as the movies from Korea/China & India are better in plot idea than most Hollywood movies. 😒
username1nmillion if you want to watch Korean dramas with English subtitles, you can easily find them on the internet, try kissasian or dramacool. Or just search the drama you want to watch and write English subtitles next to it
I hope they make more dramas like So not worth it and include foreign actors more, maybe as transfer students aka no whitewashing but realistic representation of foreigners in Korea. After So not worth it I became a fan of Carson and also the others merged into the Korean environment so well. Especially since nowadays a lot of foreigners move to South Korea.
i find it funny that the actor guy is exactly the type of guy i usually see as the boyfriend of asian girls here in germany. every guy in my korean classes (and previously in my japanese classes) was this type of guy. also asian girls i know all have boyfriends who look like him, too.
Beauty standards in the industry is really high but there are actors like Song Gang Ho, Choi Min Sik, Lee Soon Jae(eldest actor in Korea who's still working and most of Korean knows him no matter their age). And there are actresses like Go Hyun Jung, Kim Sumi. These actors/and actresses are really famous and successful but most of them isn't good looking. Especially Kim Sumi and Lee Soon Jae is a living legend in Korea's movie industry. Most of Korean people knows them even if they're not interested in movies and dramas. I hope there will be more people like them in the Korea's movie industry in the future.

Bingo. Because as an Asian foreigner who came to Korea for acting, its even harder because foreigner = white or black, etc. So as people who did study acting it’s just a visual game. It is hard because most post are looking for white. I even talked to white actors who said they only look for white it’s never able skills. Which is sad but I think things will change

@@Yellow-Rose it's a kdrama. She plays someone who works in one of the restaurants in the neighborhood. She has a small role but I've seen her twice so far. Not a lot of lines but she has lines and in Korean.

8:46 “oh my god, you and Joey” - what does she mean by that?? I didn’t get that statement at all.. I think this topic is really interesting but it felt pretty rushed and too short?! Asian boss interviews usually provide a more insightful and detailed perspective, but this one felt pretty superficial imo. Also, it might be a preference thing but I really didn’t like the interviewer’s style here, her reactions were too over the top and kinda made me cringe.
The interviewer was talking about that both actors were told that they need to lose weight. The problem was that the segments were placed differently as the guy was interviewed first, then the girl.
It’s so interesting that Carson has a slight Korean accent when she speaks English (nothing wrong with that). I wonder how long she has been in Korea.

She was raised in Korea from when she was young and did a lot of her schooling in Korean so it's nearly a native language for her. Hence why even her English sounds like it has a Korean accent.

I'm interested, what dramas has she been in? The only drama I can remember where I really liked the foreign actor was Michael Blunck, in Assorted Gems. I haven't seen him in anything since. I was really sad as I really wanted his character to end up with So Yi-hyun's character as their chemistry was really good. In fact, if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have been able to finish the drama.

7:05 - 7:41 the reactions and follow up questions of the interviewer are just bad, I feel like Asian Boss could’ve done a better job. They should’ve at least done some research on who the actors are and what films they played in prior to doing this interview. The message of this video is not very clear and it someone gives off a bad image of foreign actors in Korea. Especially the part were Carson is being interviewed. I’m sure there’s more to tell about being a foreign actor in Korea. I don’t like that they focused on why Carson is mainly getting roles of russian girls. I don’t know... some AB videos are just really good and some are very disappointing...

No offence, the lady speaks the truth. From my experienced I know that Korean in general looks only for handsome guys and beautiful girls, they don't care about your smartness, how much experiences you got and how much skillful your are. They don't care about the quality and skills that you have that can be very effective in job but their priority is only appearance. Maybe that's the reason why Korean has a lot of surgeries. This has to be stopped.

Appearance has always been important, but if you didn't have natural beauty before, you could supplement it with fashion, style, money, or intelligence.
Getting a job in Korea is insanely competitive and beauty is very important. Getting your foot in the door is difficult. If your resume isn't outstanding, you rely on appearance. Multiple studies around the world have shown that pretty people get more benefits and promotions so it is definitely a factor. Promotions in Korea are often about networking and seniority rather than job performance.
Now when it comes to dating and social status... Money and appearance reign supreme. Add in the availability and relative safety of plastic surgery, it is damn near an epidemic. Everything you mentioned are industries that do value intelligence and innovation (technology) but that is one small slice of the Korean pie.

As a Korean-Canadian actor based in Vancouver, I found this report extremely interesting both as a working actor and as a student of sociology (Thank you @Asian Boss for the report and to Joey (Daniel) and Carson for your candid insights!). It has been argued that mass media maintains the privileges of certain groups (e.g. In North America: male, white and wealthy) by creating and perpetuating stereotypes of subordinate groups like women, visible minorities, visibly obese, LGBTQ+, working-class, the aged, etc. in dramas and other types of media. Assuming that Joey (Daniel) and Carson are considered members of a subordinate group in South Korea, I wonder how they are being used by the K-drama machine to perpetuate stereotypes in South Korea?

I've lived in Korea for 10 years and have known a few famous foreign actors in Korea and many trying to become popular. A lot of them are one-trick ponies, just fall into it, or just decide to try to make it in Korea for whatever reason but aren't really talented. Most give up after a few years. Due to visa issues, they CAN'T be exclusively performers and have to have a an actual paying job and visa sponsorship, making availability an issue. Many of the super serious and ambitious people I have known left to pursue their careers in their home countries after just a few years of dealing with the 'industry' here.
Everything these actors said, I have heard from multiple other people. My husband asked if I wanted to try to get on TV here. I've been in a few things to help support some friends, but have zero desire after hearing and seeing how their life went, even the successful ones. I have been recognized a few times over the years but I don't think they actually recognized me, they more likely mistook me for another foreign personality that was popular.

So as an inspiring. Actress myself in Korea (I’m Asian), I can tell you this- there is a difference between those who want to be actors ( who did go to school, studies it or is self studying) vs people who are “models” extra who are doing it for fun or extra cash or where scouted on the street. You will see a massive difference in delivery and depth of a character ( even if it’s a extra role,,there’s a reason why certain people stand out) . If we do compare say Hollywood vs Korea..in Korea a lot of people are scouted on the spot which is why the acting is beyond cringe. In Hollywood there is scouting but even for small parts the audition process is not easy. And those that are really successful, they weren’t scouted and really wanted to acting since they were born. So that passion and drive can really be seen in bringing characters to life, not you as a person reciting memorized lines. And which is why the best actors in the world disappear when they become that character. In short, real acting = it’s not about you, it’s about the story and you’re just a little piece to help tell it:)
So I do hope people will be casted for skills and passion over looks. In kdrama there’s a lot of good looking korean actors but a lot of horrible acting ..horrible horrible acting too. So it isn’t fair to be so harsh to these two peeps in the video...
So when I see the supporting small actors slowly start getting recognition(aka the character that we’re casted to be ugly etc)...it give hope that things are turning around-looks are still important but it’s slowly changing... for the better I hope:)

but in terms of casting people as actors who are not trained actors, its the same with "teachers". every foreigner can be english teacher without being trained as a teacher.
so there is a problem with how foreigners are seen regarding their education in general!
Ugh, I ask when I go on interviews if they want a teacher or babysitter. They always say teacher, then get mad when I set basic rules and enforce them as a teacher NEEDS to do. Then they visit a month or two after I start and are shocked at how amazing my students are. Amazing what happens when you aren't a drill master but give expectations, help them teach those expectations, and watch them exceed.
I have yet to receive any helpful "training" or teaching tips other than "give them candy" as well 🙄

I'm ridiculously excited when I'm watching a drama and see a foreign actor with more than a single, mumbled line or the "We are a group of foreign businesspeople. We will laugh and nod and smile while we're talked to until we're in the background. Then we will murmur amongst ourselves so we look like we're talking even though you'll hear no audio from us." I especially love when they have speaking lines in Korean. IDK why but the English lines always sound really unnatural and strained?

Hollywood is acknowledging South Korean acting with SAG awards. Would be nice if the same thing could be mirrored in South Korea for American actors there. I think of my favorite American TV actors and most are not handsome. Hollywood actresses experience a whole range of conceived or preconceived bias, from being too pretty to too middle-aged or older. Aging actors generally are more accepted in movies.

What I'm disappointed about with Asian {& Bollywood} movies is *ALLOT* of the time they're not scripted in English and the subtitles are left not long enough on the screen to properly read. *SAD* as the movies from Korea/China & India are better in plot idea than most Hollywood movies. 😒
username1nmillion if you want to watch Korean dramas with English subtitles, you can easily find them on the internet, try kissasian or dramacool. Or just search the drama you want to watch and write English subtitles next to it

I hope they make more dramas like So not worth it and include foreign actors more, maybe as transfer students aka no whitewashing but realistic representation of foreigners in Korea. After So not worth it I became a fan of Carson and also the others merged into the Korean environment so well. Especially since nowadays a lot of foreigners move to South Korea.
i find it funny that the actor guy is exactly the type of guy i usually see as the boyfriend of asian girls here in germany. every guy in my korean classes (and previously in my japanese classes) was this type of guy. also asian girls i know all have boyfriends who look like him, too.

Beauty standards in the industry is really high but there are actors like Song Gang Ho, Choi Min Sik, Lee Soon Jae(eldest actor in Korea who's still working and most of Korean knows him no matter their age). And there are actresses like Go Hyun Jung, Kim Sumi. These actors/and actresses are really famous and successful but most of them isn't good looking. Especially Kim Sumi and Lee Soon Jae is a living legend in Korea's movie industry. Most of Korean people knows them even if they're not interested in movies and dramas. I hope there will be more people like them in the Korea's movie industry in the future.
Race is a factor in Korean society and the entertainment industry. I don't need to elaborate much on the greater context of this video because screening process to "'Foreign Actor In Korea'" are so transparent.
