This was a major thing in this era, you took a children's book with a relatively simple setup and threw the characters into a plot about diamond smuggling or kidnappers.

It sadly failed at the box office.
Great movies like this always fail at the box office, but I literally laughed the entire time. It should have, but nah we gotta give awards to the tear jerkers... I guess

I still watch this movie I consider it a classic.
I just spent an hour and a half trying to find this movie after seeing it on TV in the early to mid 2000s. All I could remember was "return to sender" and the family being stupid. I didn't think the name would really be the stupids.
Things that didn't happen. This. I literally typed in 'I'm my own grandpa' and found it within 3 seconds of thinking about it. If it really took you 90 minutes to find this movie, you should probably contemplate what you offer this world. And your place in it.

I'm from Russia. I love this kind, warm, family comedy. We in Russia saw it via VHS. Of course it was widely spread pirate era, no Internet hense the film was (and is) third-rate one-voice over translated. ))

One of the best Canadian comedies. I kind of see this classic comedy as an anti-Simpsons Movie.

The original wasn't a work of genius to begin with, but at least it has a 90s charm and Tom Arnold in a setting he works well in. I can't imagine a remake being better.

I know this was based on a series of books about a dimwitted family but when I saw the trailer I though. wow, take about trying too hard and the execution looks dreadfully poor. this kind of comedy doesn't always work so well if you're not doing it right. the slapstick, the inept antics, the physical comedy routine, and the absurdity of all is not an easy to pull off. I also felt John Landis think he was making a cheap ass knock off the pink panther movies.
