Starting artists: I'm gona put their arm behind their backs or in pockets, so I don't have to draw hands... Jack: You know what this fish thing needs?? MORE HANDS!
I tend to flip flop between wanting to draw hands and not. But generally I have been doing art since 1999 and am still a mid artist, so at least that explains my complications with hands.
Originally thought that Phytide would be a regional Mantyke, but this is so cool! I also loved the Cuttlefish design, it screams eldritch/ angelic being!
God, I love how well you're able to portray that sense of unknowableness from eldrich horror in your designs. And phytide is so cute! Can't wait to see its evolution
I'm mostly there for the Fakemons. But i certainly cannot ignore the amount of beautiful art you put in your other works. Such vivid lore in each drawings, it's mesmerizing. The horror, the fascination, the esthetic, the gloom. You've manage to blend it all so well.
bro let me tell you- I've always loved your art but today's cluster of artwork is just so stunningly well done that I had to stop and comment on how beautifully rendered each piece was. Well done 👏
Argyle HAD BOYFRIEND AND THE EVIL KILLED THEM OH MY GOD. Argyle is such a tragic figure to me, so kind and full of curiosity and willpower. Slowly sanded down by horrors he's seen. I hope he has a peaceful ending, or at least one where he doesnt become the monsters he fights. I've loved his story for a long time and enjoy every time you extend his mythos!
You are incredibly talented! I could totally see all these designs in a dark souls-like game! Also Phytide is great! A mix of cute and also kinda creepy!
I know this is about mermaids, but the Frogfish Merman is an example that this Mermay is less about mermaids and more directed to the body horror aspect, while the Cuttlefish Mermaid is more for fantasy. Beautiful illustrations though.
I am so in love with this and finches entries, the art, the narrative, the world building its all so disturbing but gets you hooked up quick Also as far as i am aware all this happens in the same universe as the apoctover challenges, i would love to get a full timeline on this thing
Been a while since I’ve commented but I just am absolutely blown away by both Jack and Clair’s rendering styles, they’re seriously so good and I really need to do some studies on them sometime in the future!
Love all the art this week. I wanna say that I really love how you draw hands and feet on these characters, they look very fitting with the design which I think is very impressive.
Fantastic work Jack! Phytide looks amazing and I look forward to its evolution. The new MerMay entries look amazing. I particularly love the Arapaima, the Cuttlefish and the Thresher Shark and the Horseshoe Crab. Well done and I look forward to seeing the remaining entries!
Argyle: "Don't trust crabs!" Also Argyle: Hey, this crazy crab is pretty entertaining. Maybe try to riddle with it if you're stuck. These are all super great. I like that some are more akin to the traditional merfolk plan; fish bottom, human top. But, others are more a proper blend of the two, and others still (usually the crown's minions) are twisted grotesques of man and sea creature. But, they all feel like they're from the same universe. So, are we getting a super big final episode this year with 10 entries!? Liking where this little Pokemon is going. Fingers crossed for a Poison/Ghost type.
I love Phytide! He’s a cute little poison type. Also love the evolution gimmick, encountering a certain number of a pokémon, (while Phytide is in your party, I assume), is a very unique idea. Bravo!
I get good vibes from cuttlefish, so for some foolish reason I expected the cuttlefish mermaid to be on the more cheery side; more of a "good guy." You'll have to imagine my "Aww yay cuttlefish! ... Oh. ... Oh lord." (I've been holding back from watching Jack's streams until after the week's art has been revealed, because I don't want it spoiled).
I'm behind on your Mermay videos, so I only just met Horseshoe today, and I think you did good on the story with him! It was a simple and effective log that made him come across really charming, keep it up
I love all your work but I really like the asymmetric designs. I think the more symmetrical ones are great too. They’ve definitely got a more powerful, eldritch vibe to them.
During apoctober, I clicked on those videos for the pokemon. However your story and designs sucked me in to the point where I groaned when the pokemon came up, as I wanted more Apoctober! At the beginning of mermay, I was thinking if the same thing would happen. I'm glad to say that the answer is yes, I adore these videos and your mermay designs. Keep up the good work!
Your kind of art is just the kind of scary I like. Not so much "Eek! It's gonna get me!" but more "Holy @#% what the %$#@ is THAT?!?!" Cosmic unknowable uncanny-valley ick.
i never thought i'd see a eutrophication/algae bloom themed fakemon but the side of my brain reserved for biology revision is going nuts over it, Phytide you little ecosystem wrecker i love you and fear you also
Counter point, let's make a Dark/Electric bioluminescent jellyfish that roams the night sky, looking like moving stars or galaxies (or maybe even a UFO to have more pokemon that play into that). Sky jellies as a concept came to mind for me from an article on the SCP wiki.
What about a Turritopsis inspired jellyfish pokemon Where the jellyfish life stage works like seasons The final adult stage would be winter themed shaped like a snowflake The ephyra stage or baby stage would be autumn themed shaped like maple leaves The budding polyp stage would be summer themed, would be beach umbrella themed And the polyp stage would be spring themed, looking like a blooming flower It's gimmick would be that when it recieves significant damage instead of fainting it would revive, but only to the previous stage with the hp halved
Phytide reminds me of dinoflagellates, which cause harmful algae blooms called "red tides". I think its evolution may play homage to the Phantamanta boss from Super Mario Sunshine.
The real question we have to ask is: Does the Arapaima-Merfolk (looking amazing btw.) link this universe with Mermay 2021 (my favourite Mermay to date)?
Love a little transparency in creature design. When I was redesigning my own Starter trio at the start of this year, it was a through line I had for all the final stages.
Im still kinda jealous that alot of my drawings dont seem as creative as your mermaid monsters. Also please make a kraken for mermay, I'm so excited for the teenage kraken movie
I gotta say, Gens 8 and 9 have been kind of misses as far as poison type designs go (other than Clodsire and Grafaiai). It’s refreshing to see some really great poison-type designs from your region (it’s my favorite type). Especially since I work with a lot of the elemental cycles in nature that determine brown/red tides. This is probably my favorite mon in the region :)
Love the series as usual. I think after Mermay you should do Megas for the starters since when Megas were introduced 6 starters got them but not the starters of the generation they were introduced. Besides they could be a good replacement for the scrapped Gmax forms for the starters you did, at least I think they're scrapped.
The comment on 'kill or be killed' not being the only options really resonated with me, especially given the highly polarized political climate we have today. Mad props to Argyle Finch for recognizing that not everything has to be solved with aggression.
Starting artists: I'm gona put their arm behind their backs or in pockets, so I don't have to draw hands...
Jack: You know what this fish thing needs?? MORE HANDS!
I used to hide hands and just draw from the collar bone up
But when I started to know how to do hands
I made every excuse to draw it in frame
I tend to flip flop between wanting to draw hands and not. But generally I have been doing art since 1999 and am still a mid artist, so at least that explains my complications with hands.
"...Ever see a man shredded to ribbons?" may be the singular most sudden and haunting line ever uttered in this series.
Which part does he say that
Nvm found it.
drax and mantis and reed in Dr. Strange M of M
Then eevees gather the ribbons, becoming mazian sylveon❤❤❤
@@kennanady2678 That's quite morbid considering the quote

Same
its so cool. and some great lore too
speaking of which, I’d really love a cuttlefish in the mazah region

the many-hands enigmorph conscripts are definitely the creepiest to me.
the coloring on the thresher is stunningly gorgeous
Man the crown of thornes does not mess around. Also I love that new pokemon, it looks both cute and cool.
Always excited to watch the Mermay videos. Fakemon + Mermay, 2 of my favorite series by Subjectively. Can't wait to watch it^.^

With Jack's current artistic background, a redesign of the legendary mermaid quartet wouldn't hurt.
