For $200 it's actually not a terrible buy if you have access to fast enough wifi and are a big PS5 gamer. My biggest complaint, and the one that will keep me from buying one, is the lack of Bluetooth. Not cool trying to force us to buy your headphones Sony....and possibly a violation of antitrust laws in the USA as well.
Bluetooth has so much lag that all of the streamed audio to the portal would be delayed beyond just the streaming part of it. Most people asking for Bluetooth on the portal would probably say Sony shouldn't have included it, if they had included it. I feel that is something all the reviewers keep saying but don't understand the reason they didn't include it.
True, but how they made it $200 is because they skimped out on battery life and storage. The G Cloud does way more and has 12 hours.
Nah. Pass. I’ll stick with my 12.9 inch iPad with cellular/wifi and Bluetooth.
😂
Do those alternative streaming devices have haptics and adaptive triggers ? If not sure it can do more but it’s not the same experience
I've had a portal since launch and it's a game changer. There's almost no perceptible lag for me and it allows me to play some games while watching something else on the tv. It works everywhere you have a good wifi signal. The best part is it is literally the most comfortable hand held I've ever used. Splitting up an actual controller is the most simple and best idea. Other handhelds tend to try to cram all the controls into the smallest amount of real estate. Highly recommend if you want to remote play and are a playstation user.
The psp played ps3 with the same tech 15 years ago. Feel good?
@@NPC123UH
PsP doesn't have dualsense support. And 15 years ago it didn't play games at 60fps
@@NPC123UHOr you can not troll someone who is actually enjoying the device. Not sure why some of y'all are not satisfied with simply not buying the Portal. Y'all gotta make sure everyone hates it as much as you.
@@enlightenedone1633it's almost like they are paid to said something bad about this device 🤔
Yep, been playing Lies of P/ SF6 etc and it feels like I'm playing locally even away from my,house. It just recieved an update recently not sure for what. But the portal has been pretty flawless for me.
Please stop treating the PS Portal like a dedicated handheld gaming system. Its a PS5 accessory. An accessory! It does not try to be a dedicated handheld gaming system nor was it advertised as a dedicated handheld gaming system. Hell, if you ordered it through PS direct (how I got mine) you will find the Portal under accessories not console.
Yes if i wanted a dedicated handheld gaming system i wouldn't get a portal, but unlike so many reviewers, I didn't buy a PS portal because I really wanted a dedicated handheld gaming system... I brought it so that I can play my PS5 games anywhere in my house or using my mobile hotspot with all the features of my PS5 controller. The way I see it, if a Backbone is 100.00 with no screen and i have to use my phone (which requires that i take it out of the case and burn through my battery to game and use my phone for all the things i use my phone for) then at 200.00 for a beautiful 8 inch display, all my dualsense features, and I don't have to use my phone if I am just chilling at home, this device was a no brainer for me. It may not be for everyone....i think Sony understands its audience here...they were never trying to appeal to people who want a dedicated handheld gaming system, but for someone who was using remote play on a Backbone and my phone before i got the Portal .... this device does exactly what I want it to do...play my PS5 .
Boy do I regret reading all that
Kid... have you considered that the Backbone is also overpriced for what it is? Lol. You dont need to be this fanatical about this pretty just ok device. If you love it, more power to you, just relax
That awkward moment when sony is counting the portal as a console sale and your entire agreement falls apart but okay bro. 😂
@@chance0marasso
Sony is not counting Portal as a console sale ....Circana (formerly NPD) is tracking Portal as a standalone console (seperate of PS5 sales)....Sony considers Portal an accessory. Nice try though!
@@corey_massey wrong it was requested by Sony, that they count it as a console sale.
@@chance0marasso
Yup a deleted tweet is way more accurate than Sony, Sony's direct to consumer website, and Sony's advertising for the Portal since it was announced! Sony asked Circana to classify the device that Sony classifies as an accessory to be considered a console even though its a 200.00 paperweight unless you already own a PS5. Gotcha! Cool story bro!
Most reviewers or Portal bashers have not clear idea what Portal target audience is.. or they clearly have a preferences for other devices.
on ground review by purchasers have been fantastic so far.. the big screen and controllers.. network latency is the same across ALL kind of remote play devices.. not even sure why this issue is consistently brought up..
You lost me when you compared it to a $600 Kishi and stated that the loss of Dualsense controllers on a remote play device is a small matter... Also, why would anyone want to stream netflix or youtube on a remote play device when there are phones or ipads?! Flexibility at greater price point is clearly preferred rather than a full blown PS5 gaming experience on the go 😒
Ask any reviewer who want to experience PS5 gaming on the go.. the review will be like day and night...
I hope people research and get the G Cloud instead. It has storage, can stream movies, 12 hours battery life. Stream every platform.
You can buy a Switch and Portal for less than the price of Kishi at $600.
@@onmywayto974haptics and adaptive triggers ?
Oooooooo …. I need it!!! 🔥🔥
Thanks you saved I'm going with the Razor.
Hi, what's the point of the ps portal ? if you have disk games on your ps5 you can only play the one game to play another game you have to change disk and if your out somewhere else how can you do that.
This is true that would be limiting in that youd have to change your disk to play a different game, which you couldn't if you weren't at home. This isnt a problem for me as i have mostly digital purchased games.
No offense I am happy with my odin 2. It does everything it can stream the ps5 by using remote play app and emulate games from old playstation consoles however I am pretty sure they will come up with upgrade the PS3 and PS4 is in the works. But as all people reviews from you tubers it is just an accessory. But my question is this how long will it last???
Old Captain America: No, no I don't think I will.
Lol. It's not Loo-mines, it's Loo-min-ess.
Tomorrow (sunday) will be 1 week since I've had my portal and I absolutely love it its so dope 😊😊😊
do u need a ps5 to get that
@@rugby959 yes it only works with ps5
If no one brought this/ boycotted and all of you banded together protested and demanded a proper PlayStation portable we wouldn’t be here
Digital Trends. So clever.
2nd one to comment , who ever is reading this . Have a great day today!
You too!
Thank you, you as well!
It’s not a terrible buy but no Bluetooth and no browser WiFi login is an issue. When it works it’s awesome but if you do more than just PlayStation then tablet w/controller or Logitech G Cloud are better. Backbone like the devices are not ideal IMO.
The razer kishi isnt even using up the full screen while using remote play, most reviewers don't seem to understand this product.
you speed bro?
Only thing I see wrong is why isn’t this in 4K instead 1080P
4K streaming to a small tablet screen doesn't really makes sense, its a waste of bandwidth. When you stream Netflix to your phone, its only 1080p max for similar reasons
Not that this device couldn't use more upgrades for $200, its definitely not perfect, but 4k isnt something that makes sense in this case. OLED shouldve been used though, Sony really cheaped out in several ways for this device
@@PantsaBear I didn’t know that on the first part👍🏽 But yes OLED screen or Quantum Dot enhancement, new 3D tech, something😅
You saved some poor grandparents from disappointing the kids this Christmas!
I'd like to get a PS 5 portal it looks cool
Bro, it’s freaking amazing! I’ve played my ps5 while at my in-laws and at work. It’s a win-win regardless of what the ignorant haters preach.
This is a great idea, until Sony deletes all your digital content for no reason, and no way of getting compensation of any of it. Then this is a much bigger waste of money, than it already is.
Lol fear mongering. WARNER BROTHERS DISCOVERY doesn't renew a license, it MUST mean Sony is going to take away all your games. Obviously lol. You do understand that IF they REALLY wanted to? They can block your access to physical games too. Also, what you said? You might as well say that about the console itself as well. Your console would be useless if they blocked all of your access and profiles and force your console to update, so that you'd have to get back online, even when offline.
@@rocky047586 Do you even remember games back in the early 2000s? None of them required you to be online like they do now. That's why Physical Media is STILL important to old school gamers. If the game doesn't require you to be online to play the game, the developers can't do shit to your game. Look at what Larian Studios are doing with the Physical Media for Baulders Gate 3. None of this "Box with a QR code shit" to download the game. Publishers don't care about gamers. Otherwise they wouldn't be adopting practices that would nickel and dime us, just to play the game. That includes accessories. This is a Company...who announced that they would be devoting their entire business model to developing Games-as-a-Service type games going forward. WTF?!?! NO ONE WANTS THIS!!! Anyway...I understand that this accessory is a niche product, and it will appeal to a very specific audience. It's just not for everyone, that's all I'm saying about it. For the vast majority, people would much rather get the ROG Ally, Switch, or the Steam Deck. Now, include the Lenovo Legion Go.
I don’t get why anyone would think its a problem that you can’t use bluetooth headphone on PS portal when PS5 does NOT support bluetooth audio in the first place….
Yes, no PS5 has bluetooth audio. You’ve never been able to connect your bluetooth headphone directly to a PS5. You can connect it to your TV or you need to use a USB dongle.
You DO realize that's a problem for the PS5 too.
It's okay to call out bad decisions by companies you like OR about some thing you personally don't care about.
For Example, I don't care about multiplayer, but I will side with the people calling out companies for putting multiplayer behind a paywall.
@@AntonioCunningham No, you can just connect it to you TV if needed to.
You shouldn’t be using bluetooth for gaming anyways due to lag.
The “bluetooth” technology is a problem for gaming in general.
@@tonamg53 How are you to decide what someone can use for audio? Also the consoles do more than just game these days so having Bluetooth in them *is* valuable. Especially for people who don't want to be locked to Sony proprietary Hardware.
Who the hell calls it Lu mines?
Here is Why not togo the digital future.
Sony to revoke access to paid digital video content from Discovery on their PlayStation Store on 12/31/23 and no mention of refunds
Why are you not mad at Discovery for not allowing you to transfer that content to other devices? Sony only got 30% of that money and Discovery got 70%
I love Digital Trends but I believe this review is a bit too critical. It costs only 200 dollars and does very well what is meant to do. Bluetooth is a poor technology for gaming given latency and cloud streaming will be added in the future. If it is so bad, why it sold out and when a new stock come in, it sells fully within minutes?
The PS5 doesn't have native Bluetooth headset support but people expect a PS5 accessory to have Bluetooth headsets support.
Bluetooth works great on Xbox and PS5 via a dongle. No noticeable latency whatsoever. What are you talking about?
Nah He telling the truth, this thing is bonk.
@@Reginald_Harrison
The PS5 and Xbox consoles are also processing games natively. They are not remotely playing a game from a server via the internet. Because the game is run on the internal hardware of the PS5 which is being remotely accessed by the Portal, a Bluetooth signal from the Portal would acts as a thin latency barrier between the PS5 (which is playing the game) and the Portal (which is where you see what is being played.) PS link technology bypasses the Bluetooth signal protocol and allows audio to be directly connected to the device instead of remotely connected via Bluetooth.
@@corey_massey I was responding to the OP’s claim that “Bluetooth is a poor technology for gaming”. It may be a poor technology for Remote Play, but not gaming in general.
I don't understand why they didn't offer a SIM card for this. Add data, and it would be perfect. There is no point in owning this. It will never work properly outside the home unless you're on a really good network. Maybe great for kids when they go to their grandparents' house or at the airport for long periods of time. I would wait for the second generation.
Mad you can use your phone as a hot spot where ever you are, simple as that.
@crashn2me105 I don't play games, so I don't care. Grow up.
I've used it at home and away from home on other networks equally and it works just as good in both scenarios.
pointless device if you already have a mid range or high end tablet and can use remote play app!
this is better than those
Its like saying ipad or tablet is a pointless device when you can do almoatcsame thing on laptop on the first place
Third
Plz bring back the vita with 4k no more old ass hd…and don’t tell me you can’t because I know you can
4k seems like it would be a huge waste of power on a screen that size, I’d say at most make it 1440 but even that seems a bit overkill, plus it would destroy the battery
@@RyanZirnheld11 I feel like it's almost 2024 with all this crazy tec they should be able to figure all that out lol
@@MatthewMat993 I’d rather have a 720p Red Dead Redemption 2 than a 4k Minecraft, there are a lot of things that go into making games look good and resolution is just one of them, but by far the most taxing on the processor and battery
An 8” 1080p screen has a much higher pixel density than a 4k 27” monitor.
4k on a tiny screen is a bit of a waste. Either an HDR OLED screen or 120hz would be a lot cooler than 4k for
Nope the vita was a failure that forced Sony to split resources with another platform. This plays all your ps5 library without the need for any further investments besides ql improvements and software updates to improve/enhance its functionality. Even a native device would end up costing way more and that type of tech is expensive.
first
I got 3 minutes through the video before I decided it was garbage
Can we stop with this thing already...
Shhhhhhh be quiet
Nope don’t buy it’s took me 4 hours too log on not worth it… its trash
L for sony
Sales say otherwise
It’s sold out everywhere, it’s a massive W for Sony. I want one myself.
A million times better than trashbox series x 😂😂😂
That’s don’t make sense it is just a console like the ps5
The only difference is what games you want to play
Typically phony statement 😂😂😂
typical sony fanboy response, well heres another fanboy response PC IS BETTER!
@@jumper55ful yup he's a sony pony 🤣🤣
Easy pass. Not even giving it a second thought. I can't be filling my place with useless tech whose ONLY claim to my hard-earned cash is chiefly because they have a Playstation logo. YES, I get the defence that it's an ACCESSORY for the PS5...but THAT'S precisely why it has no reason or right to exist. When they revisit the Playstation portable - I'm in.
We, including DT, knows this product is useless. Sony is begging everyone to give it a chance, thus these "please watch this videos because Sony money is involved".
Yea, yeah.
It's a pretty great product. Love mine. Sold out everywhere.
i feel bad for you@@Jumpman67
Different people, different opinions, different needs. Not useless to people who shares the TV with others and wants to play anywhere in the house with the same feel and experience as the dual sense. It's nice to have options and nobody is forcing people to buy it. It's a niche product with specific target customers with specific needs and at the end of the day, it's the sales that matters. So far, based on reported sales, it appears to be doing pretty well so I don't see Sony desperately begging people to buy it.
@@Jumpman67yep its a great device, has attracted alot of hate from obsessed weirdos. If you dont want it then you can treat it like it doesn't exist.
FYI, all these "sales" you mentioned are not from users.
Sony sales are from all these Hypermarkets and distributors, they bought the product and keep them in stock. In short, Sony got its money (if not its profits); ask any of these hypermarkets and distributors on what their sales figures are. @@einsamherz2762 My problem with Portal is that it is half baked, and is following apple's business strategy
