  • Alicia Fletcher, curator of the TIFF Cinematheque's "Make It Fashion" programme looks into the wardrobes of four 1980s fashion favourites: The Hunger (1983), Liquid Sky (1982), The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989), and American Gigolo (1980).
Drawn from the catwalks of fashion’s most lauded houses as well as the independent designers who defined DIY aesthetics, Make It Fashion celebrates nearly a century of fashion history through film. From Audrey Hepburn’s iconic collaborations with Givenchy, to Prada channelled through Baz Luhrmann, to Manolo Blahnik’s interpretations of Le Grand Siècle footwear in Marie Antoinette, the fashion runway and cinema co-exist as one of the visual arts’ most mutually beneficial relationships.
    Make it Fashion features:
Marie Antoinette (2006), Prix de beauté with Live Accompaniment (1930), Les Dames du Bois de Boulogne (1945), The Hunger (1983), Liquid Sky (1982), L'inhumaine (1924), Mahogany (1975), The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989), American Gigolo (1980), Stage Fright (1950), Charade (1963), Cabaret (1962), Romeo + Juliet (1996), and Personal Shopper (2016).
The series is curated by Alicia Fletcher.
The 47th Toronto International Film Festival runs September 8 to 18, 2022. For more, visit tiff.net.

The iconic "American Gigolo" elevated GQ magazine, Giorgio Armani and Richard Gere to legendary status. Kudos to TIFF & Alicia Fletcher.

David Bowie (born David Jones) was so bad@ss when it came to fashion. Him and Robert Palmer (RIP), were amazing. David could wear a yellow suit and look fantastic, but someone else it would look ridiculous. Did you ever think of doing a profile on African American Fashion or Soaps, or even Mad Men.
